http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=105&oid=028&aid=0002357375 화제의 주인공은 미 샌프란시스코의 신생기신생기업 멤피스 미트(MemphisMeats)다. 이 회사는 지난 14일 맛 감별사들을 초청해 배양육 치킨 시식회를 가졌으며, 시식에 참가한 이들이 실제 치킨과 같은 맛을 느꼈다는 소감을 전했다고 밝혔다. 이 회사 대표 우마 발레티는 보도자료를 통해 “사육할 필요가 없는 닭과 오리 고기를 처음으로 선보이게 돼 전율을 느낀다”며 “이는 '청정 고기 운동'의 역사적인 순간”이라고 말했다. 이 회사는 이날 치킨과 함께 배양육 오리고기도 내놨다. 멤피스 미트는 앞서 지난해 2월엔 암소의 근육세포를 실험실에서 배양해 만든 미트볼을 선보인 바 있다. 배양육의 취지는 좋지만 가야 할 길은 아직 멀다. 가장 큰 문제는 가격이다. 2013년 배양육 햄버거를 만드는 데 든 비용은 37만5천달러(약 4억 2400만원)나 됐다. 배양육 치킨의 가격은 1파운드(453g)에 9000달러(약 1000만원)다. 이는 1년 전 이 회사가 미트볼을 만들 때 들었던 비용에 비하면 절반이나 떨어진 것이지만 아직도 지나치게 비싼 수준이다. 미국의 경우 뼈없는 치킨 가슴살 가격은 1파운드당 3.22달러라고 한다. 단순 비교하면 2800배나 높은 가격이다. 이 회사는 앞으로 몇년에 걸쳐 생산비용을 낮춰, 2021년에는 일반에 시판할 수 있을 것으로 기대했다. 배양육이 완전히 친환경적인 방법인 것만도 아니다. 동물세포를 재료로 쓰기 때문이다. 멤피스 미트가 배양육 출시에 성공한다면 그 다음과제는 이 문제를 해결하는 것이다. 엥? 이거 완전 신성모독 아닌가요?
