케빈 가넷이 미네소타에서 가지는 의미를 아는 사람일수록 애틋하게 느껴지죠. '적'에게는 과격하고 때로 몰지각하기까지 한 거친 선수였고 그 때문에 논란도 많았지만 적어도 농구를 전쟁마냥 이입하면서 보는 로컬 팬들에게는 믿음직한 리더였거든요. 그런 지위를 유지한 채 미네소타에서 고졸 시점부터 서른줄에 접어들 때까지 12년을 보냈으니.. 말하자면 지역의 자존심이죠. 소위 '늑대 대장'. 옛날 한국축구 팬들이 홍명보나 박지성 생각할 때나 소녀시대 팬들이 태연 생각하는 그 느낌이랄까요. 그래서 우승하겠다고 미네소타를 떠나 보스턴으로 이적했을 때도 밉다기보다는 아픈 손가락이었고. 그런 맥락에서 보면 저런 공중도덕 없는 응원의 12년 만의 회수야말로 가넷과 미네소타 팬덤이 가지는 관계를 집약적으로 보여주는 단면이 아닌가 싶네요.
