 1. 땅파서 장사합니다. 뭔 개소리냐고 할텐데 실제로 그렇습니다. 코스트코의 당기순이익을 보면 놀랍게도 연간 회원권 수입과 거의 일치합니다. 즉, 물건 팔아서 생긴 마진은 모조리 직원월급, 임대료, 각종비용, 마케팅비용 등등으로 상쇄되어 실제 남는 이득은 거의 없고 연간 회원권 수입만 순이익으로 남는 구조입니다. 즉, 상품가 설정 자체를 '손해는 안볼 정도'로 설정하죠. 이러니 항상 저렴한 가격구성이 가능해지는겁니다. 국내 유통대기업이 알면서도 코스트코처럼 못하는덴 이유가 있는거죠. 2. 카테고리별 상품의 종류가 제한돼있습니다. 코스트코는 다품종을 택하기보단 소품종을 택했습니다. 코스트코 같은 유통 대기업에 납품하는 것 자체로 제조사 입장에선 상당부분 시장점유율과 매출을 보장받는 셈이죠. 그래서 코스트코는 제조사에 제안합니다. '우리가 너희제품만 매장에 깔아줄테니 대신 그 어떤 곳보다도 싸게 납품하시오'. 당신이 제조사라면 어떻게 나오겠습니까? 당장 수락하지요. 이건 제조사 입장에서 엄청나게 파격적인 조건입니다. 그러니 응당 파격적인 납품가로 보내주는거죠. 여기서 또 한번 가격경쟁력이 생깁니다. 3. 각종 비용을 최소화합니다. 매장에 인테리어도 최소화합니다. 별도의 물류창고도 필요 없습니다. 매장 자체가 물류창고고 직원들도 캐셔부터 사무까지 돌아가며 봅니다. 심지어 추차비용 청구 장비도 없습니다. 어떤 방식으로든 인력과 자원의 배치를 최소화합니다. 4. 수수료 최저화 전략 코스트코의 악명높은 불편함... 바로 삼성카드만 된다는 사실이지요. 근데 소비자들은 크게 잘못 생각하고 있는겁니다. 이게 싫으면 그냥 코스트코를 이용하지 않으면 됩니다. 왜 싫은데 자꾸 가지요? 코스트코가 특정 카드사하고만 계약하는건 그만한 이유가 있습니다. 바로 카드 수수료를 최소화하기 위한거죠. 위의 2번과 똑같은 겁니다. 독점권을 주는대신 파격적인 할인을 이끌어내는거죠. 5. 전혀 예상치 못한 대한민국 국민들의 소비성향. 처음 코스트코가 들어올 때까지만 해도 창고형 마트는 존재하지도 않았고 많은 전문가들도 그런 유통업은 미국같이 이동거리가 긴 국가에서나 필요한 것으로 생각했습니다. 이때 코스트코가 국내에 들어오죠. 사실 코스트코도 뭘 노리고 들어온건 아니었습니다. 거의 10년을 간신히 버티며 죽쑤다가 어느순간 폭발하게 됩니다. 전혀 의외인 점은 한국 소비자들같이 인구 대부분이 도시에 거주하고 걸어서 몇분거리마다 대형마트가 있음에도 미국 소비자 이상으로 대량구매에 열을 올린다는 점이었습니다. 가장 큰 이유는 바로... '전 세계에서 가장 높은 자영업 비중' 때문이었죠. 코스트코 이전에 특히 심햇지만 자영업하시는분들은 싼 도매선이나 중간유통선을 찾기가 좀 힘들었습니다. 영세 자영업자가 물건을 구매하려면 유통단계를 이미 많이 거쳐 물건값이 비싸진 제품을 구매할 수 밖에 없었는데 이런 영세 자영업자들에게 코스트코가 최적의 대안이 된겁니다. 6. 코스트코가 외제라서 좋아하는게 절대 아닙니다. 최소한의 반대추론도 안되는 멍청하신 분들이 이런 말을 하는데요.. 이런 말을 하기 이전에 코스트코보다 몇십배 규모 큰 월마트나 까르푸가 왜 국내에서 개털리고 철수했는지 생각해보시기 바랍니다. 7. 국내 PB상품의 개척자 코스트코 하면 생각나는 자체상품. 바로 컬크랜드죠. 품질은 좋고 가격은 싼 컬크랜드는 브랜딩 비용이나 여타 비용을 최소화 할 수 잇는 이유로 가격이 싸서 엄청난 인기를 끌게 됩니다. 이후 국내 유통대기업들도 따라서 PB제품을 만들기 시작합니다. 8. 코스트코 하면 생각나는 대표상품들 자... 이마트하면 무엇이 떠오르십니까? 롯데마트는요??? 아마 둘을 합해도 통큰치킨정도만 생각날 겁니다. 소비자들은 의외로 복잡한 선택을 하기 싫어합니다. 수없이 많은 다양한 제품을 제시하고 소비자가 그중 딱 원하는 제품을 찾을거라 생각한 패러다임을 깬겁니다. 전문성을 가진 MD들이 소비자들의 입맛에 딱 맞고 품질 좋은 한두종류의 상품만을 카테고리별로 제시하니 소비자들은 그저 주워담기만 하면 됩니다. 시간아깝게 가격을 따지고 품질을 따질 필요가 없죠. 코스트코를 가면 무엇이든 다 싼 물건이고, 이것저것 생각할 것도 없이 카테고리별로 두어개의 제품밖에 없으니 그냥 박스채로 주워담으면 됩니다. 이렇다보니 유통업임에도 '대표상품'이란 개념이 생겨나게 됩니다. 코스트코하면 떠오르는게 많죠. 소고기, 돼지고기, 머핀, 연어, 견과류, 와인, 치즈볼, 생수 등등등... 아니 유통업은 그저 납품받아서 물건만 깔아주는 역할을 하는데 왜 대표상품이 생겨버린거죠??ㅋㅋㅋ 이게 국내 유통사화 극명하게 다른 점입니다. 자. 다시 생각해보세요 이마트나 롯데마트하면 뭐가 생각나시죠? 9. 창업주가 마트 캐셔 출신 현장감각을 중요시 여기는 창업주는 놀랍게도 마트에서 캐셔를 보던 사람이었습니다. 그래서 본사 직원도 매장 캐셔에서 충원합니다. 캐셔 출신이다보니 매장 영업직에 대한 대우도 괜찮은 편입니다. 10. 즉석식품의 차별화. 여러분 늦은 시간에 국내 마트 가보시면 30% 혹은 50% 태그가 붙은 즉석식품류 많이 보실겁니다. 유통기한이 임박했거나 상품성이 좀 떨어졌거나... 휴일때문에 팔아서 없애야 하는경우 이렇게 붙여서 내놓죠. 코스트코에선 없습니다. 시간대별로 소비자를 차별하지도 않고 상품성이 떨어진건 아예 팔지 않아요. 상품성이 떨어진걸 싸게 파는 회사가 뒤에가서 어떤짓을 할지는??? 사람은 상상력을 발휘할때 겁이 많아집니다. 코스트코도 동일한 방식입니다. 매장직원들은 잡일 부터 시작해서 관리자까지 가는 방식이고,
각 매장에 가서 보면 10년 넘게 근속한 직원들은 사진도 붙여 놓기도 합니다.
단 장기근속한다고 해서 급여의 차이가 많지는 않다고 합니다.
6. 직원들의 시급이 8000원대로 알고 있는데, 시급이 적지 않은 만큼 노동강도도 쌥니다.
이마트에 가면 계산대에 직원이 두명씩 붙어 있는 경우가 많지만, 코스트코는 한명입니다.
상품을 설명하는 직원이나 상품이 어디 있는지 알려주는 직원도 없습니다.
(심지어는 직원이 고객보다 상품이 어디에 있는지 잘 모르는 경우도 허다합니다.)
다른 마트와 달리 시식코너 직원도 파견직이 아닌 매장직원입니다만,
최근에는 업체 판촉사원들도 파견되어서 판촉활동을 하고 있습니다.
7. 즉석식품 할인 하지 않는 것은 좀 아쉽기는 합니다.
하지만, 즉석식품을 할인한다고 하면 할인시간에 몰릴 인파 때문에 사고가 날지도....
8. 한국은 신세계와 합작으로 시작한 프라이스 클럽으로 시작을 해서 일부 매장의 소유자가 신세계입니다.
그래서 신세계 소유인 매장은 좀 이전해 줬으면 하는 마음이 있는데,
그럴 의사는 아직 없는 모양이더군요.
뭐 이전하면 더 외곽으로 매장을 이전하겠지만....
9. 사실 물건은 그리 저렴하지 않습니다.
코스트코에서만 구일할 수 있는 5l짜리 식초, 10l짜리 락스, 10l짜리 주방세제 같은 녀석들은 저렴하기는 합니다.
베이커리가 저렴하다고 하지만 자영업자에게는 더 저럼하고 배달까지 해주는 업체들도 있으니까요.
하지만 유기농 제품으로 가면 아직까지는 저렴하고 다양하게 구입가능합니다.
(이마트가 이부분도 많이 따라잡았습니다.)

아무도 살 것 같지 않은 2억짜리 다이아, 물놀이용 보트, 몇백평하는 집이나 별장이 있는 사람이 구입할 것 같은
정원용품. 실제로 설치하려면 지반공사부터 해야할 것 같은 백만원이 넘는 창고에...
미국사람이나 살 것 같은 휘발유 사용하는 잔디깍이까지...
심지어 온라인 쇼핑몰에서는 3D프린터도 팔고 있습니다.
백화점과는 다른 방식으로 환상을 팔고 있지요. .....
