 갑인환국. 1674년 2차 예송논쟁 직후 현종이 죽고 숙종이 즉위합니다. 1차가 서인의 판정승이었다면 2차는 현종이 송시열을 비롯한 서인들을 압박했죠. 숙종은 그 뒤를 이어 송시열 등 서인들을 내쫓습니다. 환국이라 하지만 이후에 비하면 별 거 아니었죠. +) 더 들어가기 전에 잠깐. 남인은 이 때 청남과 탁남으로 나뉩니다. 청남은 예송논쟁을 주도하고 서인과 맞서 싸운 이들로 윤휴, 허목 등입니다. 반면 탁남은 서인 정권에서도 비교적 잘 살았던 이들로 허적 등이죠. 서인은 인조 대에 산당과 한당으로 나뉘는데, 오랑캐에게 치욕을 당했으니 벼슬살이 안 하겠다고 나선 쪽이 산당이고 송시열 등이 있습니다. 김육 등 그런 가운데서도 조정에 있던 자들이 한당이죠. 동인과 서인으로 분당이 시작되고 동인이 남북으로 나뉘고 서인이 나뉘고 남인이 나뉘고... 이런 것들이 다 어떤 사안에 대해서 온건이냐 강경이냐가 주된 이유입니다. 아무래도 강경 쪽이 온건 쪽을 우리는 깨끗하고 너네는 더럽다 이런 느낌이 좀 컸죠. -_-; 아무튼 이런 건 노론과 소론, 시파와 벽파로 대립하는 것까지 이어집니다. 경신환국. 1680년 남인을 몰아내고 서인을 등용한 사건입니다. 흔히 알려진 것은 허적의 유악(천막의 일종입니다) 사건이죠. 영의정이었던 허적이 왕이 직접 하사해야 하는 유악을 자기 멋대로 가져갔다는 겁니다. 하지만 실록에는 이렇다 할 기록이 없고, 실제 사건이라 해도 그냥 건수를 잡은 거였을 겁니다. 서인이 밀려난 상태, 정권을 잡은 남인은 군권도 장악하고 있었습니다. 그리고 북벌론을 밀어붙이고 있었죠. (마침 삼번의 난이라 청이 어지럽다는 것인데... 강희제는 그걸 다 막아냈죠) 이런 상황에서 갑자기 적으로 등장한 것이 김석주였습니다. 김육의 손자로 송시열 쪽과는 거리가 있었고 외척이었던만큼 예송논쟁 때도 현종 편을 들었습니다. 남인은 도체찰사를 부활시켰고 그 권한은 영의정인 허적에게 있었죠. 숙종은 그걸 견제하기 위해 부체찰사로 김석주를 앉힙니다. 청남이야 반대했지만 허적 등 탁남은 김석주와 친했고, 김석주 역시 처음에는 이들의 북벌론을 지지했죠. 그러다가 김석주가 남인의 역모를 고변합니다. 송시열의 제자 김익훈과 손을 잡고 허적의 서자 허견이 숙종을 몰아내고 다른 왕족을 앉히려 했다는 혐의였죠. 여기에 연루된 게 복창군과 복선군, 복평군, 왕족 팔자가 그렇듯이 다 죽었고 -_-; 때문에 삼복의 난으로도 부릅니다. "유학자를 쓰기 싫으면 안 쓰면 그만이지 죽일 것은 무엇인가?" - 윤휴 이 때 문제는 표적이 된 허적 뿐만 아니라 강경파인 윤휴까지 죽였다는 점입니다. 청남이든 탁남이든 싹 밀어버렸다는 것이죠. 정여립의 난으로 생각해보면 동인을 쓸면서 류성룡, 이산해를 죽인 겪입니다. 붕당들이 자초한 면도 있긴 합니다. 인조반정 이후 소극적인 야당에만 머물던 남인이 윤선도, 윤휴, 허목 등을 필두로 강경하게 나갔고, 서인도 이에 강하게 맞서면서 싸움이 본격적으로 시작됩니다. 1차 예송논쟁에서 서인들은 윤선도를 죽이라고까지 했고, 경신환국 전까지만 해도 허목 등 강경파가 송시열을 죽이라고 나섰습니다. (허목은 늙어서인지 이 때 죽진 않고 환국 2년 후에 죽습니다) 그렇게 강경화된 남인에 대한 답이 이 경신환국일 겁니다. 서인들도 이 점에선 다른 게 없었습니다. 예송을 거쳐 남인에 대한 건 증오 수준으로 바뀌었고, 남인에 우호적이었던 윤선거까지도 적대합니다. 그의 아들 윤증과의 갈등(회니시비)은 결국 노소론 분당의 원인이 됐고, 경신환국을 주도한 김석주를 옹호한 것 역시 원인이 됐습니다. 하지만 그런 갈등을 조정해야 하는 게 왕입니다. 숙종은 그러지 않았죠. 오히려 정반대의 길을 갑니다. 기사환국. 1689년에 장희빈이 낳은 아들을 원자로 책봉하느냐의 문제에서 나옵니다. (일단 태어난 애를 원자(맏이)로 올리고 더 크면 세자로 책봉합니다) 아직 백일도 안 된 애였지만 장희빈에 대한 애정과 아직까지 아들이 없어서 그랬던 게 크겠죠. 이걸 송시열 등 서인들이 반대한 겁니다. 기본적으로 너무 어리니 당연한 거였고, 숙종의 나이가 그리 많은 것도 아니고 (아직 30이 안 됐죠) 인현왕후가 멀쩡히 있는 상태였으니까요. 인현왕후가 서인 쪽인 것도 있구요. 숙종은 송시열 등 서인들을 다 내쫓고 남인들을 앉힙니다. 그리고 이들에게 사약을 내리죠. 네, 그 송시열에게 말입니다. 그리고 인현왕후를 폐합니다. 경신환국 후, 김석주는 남인들을 아예 다 쓸어버리려고 역모를 조작합니다. '허새의 옥사'입니다. 하지만 이게 무고로 밝혀졌죠. 남인은 반격의 실마리를 잡았고, 서인에서도 김석주를 탄핵하는 움직임이 일어납니다. 그에게 직접 맞서는 것보단 그와 손 잡은 김익훈을 주로 깠지만요. 김석주는 이 때까지 자기 정적들의 유배지를 숙종을 압박해서 정할 정도의 권력을 보여줍니다만, 얼마 후 낙향해서 84년에 죽습니다. 병이 이유인데 진짜 병 때문인지 도저히 못 봐주겠던 숙종이 숙청한 건지는 모르겠군요. 문제는 이 때 송시열의 행동입니다. 나름 정적이었던 적도 있었고, 무엇보다 외척으로 권신이었던 김석주였습니다. 그런데 남인과 싸운다는 이유로 그의 편을 든 것이죠. 그와 사이 안 좋았던 윤증은 물론 이에 실망한 소장파들이 대거 이탈하니 이게 노소론 분당입니다. 물론 윤증 등이 남인에 우호적이어서 강경/온건으로 나뉜 것도 있지만요. 당연히 이 때 죽어나간 것도 남인에 강경한 노론 쪽이었습니다. 남인들부터가 송시열을 이미 원수로 여기고 있었구요. 하지만 송시열이라는 이름값은 너무나도 컸죠. 그 남인들도 송시열을 죽음을 강하게 밀지는 못합니다. 하지만 숙종은 그보다 더 멀리 나갔죠. "학문은 마땅히 주자를 바탕으로 삼고, 사업은 효종께서 하고자 하시던 뜻(북벌)을 주로 삼으라." - 송시열 마지막까지도 참 의연하게 갔네요. 그러면서도 명분은 다 손에 들고 갔죠. 남인은 이 때 강경이고 온건이고 다 죽어나간 상태였고, 이전에 집권했을 때처럼 막 나가진 못 합니다. 오히려 예스맨들이 주류였죠. 그렇다고 서인에 대한 증오가 풀린 것도 아니었습니다. 갑술환국. 1694년의 일입니다. 환국 중에 도무지 갈피를 잡을 수 없는 환국이죠. 시작은 장희빈의 오라비 장희재였습니다. 남인을 이끌던 우의정 민암에게 서인 함이완의 밀고가 들어옵니다. 소론들이 장희재와 연결하려고 한다는 거였고, 이는 숙종의 보호와 국문에서 무고로 밝혀지면서 무마됩니다. 이 과정에서 노소론을 가리지 않고 다 엮여 나옵니다. 남인들을 몰아내기 위해 반역죄를 조작했다는 거였죠. 여기에는 숙종의 친척들(그러니까 왕족들)도 줄줄이 얽혔고, 심지어 숙종의 여동생 명안공주까지 얽힙니다. 남인들은 이를 엄히 다스려야 된다고 주장했죠. 그런데 3일 후인 3월 29일, 유생 김인이 상소를 올립니다. 민암 등이 장희재와 손을 잡고 반역을 계획하고 있었고, 한편으로 영조를 임신하고 있던 숙빈 최씨까지 죽이려 하는 걸 목격했다는 거였죠. 민암, 장희재 등은 억울하다고 했고 숙종은 이들을 위로합니다. 하지만... 다음 날인 4월 1일, 숙종은 말을 바꿔서 남인들을 다 내쫓고 서인들로 교체하니 이게 갑술환국입니다. 지 자신도 '어제 적을 취조하던 자가 오늘은 취조를 받으니' 이런 말을 했습니다만... 이런 걸 보면 애초에 자기가 계획했다는 걸 생각해볼 수 있죠. 이렇게 신하들을 갈면서도 폐비 민씨(인현왕후)의 복위를 말하고 세자에게 위협되는 말을 하는 자는 대역죄로 묻겠다 합니다만... 4월 11일, 장희재를 쫓아내고는 인현왕후를 복위시켜 버립니다. 당연히 왕비가 둘일 수 없으니 이때까지 왕비였던 장씨는 빈으로 강등되죠. 이 '희빈 장씨'를 장희빈이라 부르는 겁니다. 명성황후를 민비라 부르는 것처럼요. 그로부터 7년 후인 1701년, 인현왕후가 죽습니다. 이걸로 상황은 또 요동치게 되죠. 장희빈이 인현왕후에게 저주를 걸었다는 겁니다. 분노한 숙종은 귀양 보낸 장희재는 물론, 세자의 어미인 장희빈을 죽입니다. 이 때 남인들이 장희빈의 아버지 묘를 훼손한 후 서인이 한 것처럼 무고한 일이 있었는데 이걸로 남인들이 또 여럿 죽게 되구요. 이것이 무고의 옥, 혹은 신사옥사입니다. 이렇게 남인들은 계속된 야당 생활 끝에 숙종 때 약간씩의 집권을 하다가 싹 갈려나갑니다. 이제 남은 건 노론과 소론이었죠. 갑술환국 당시엔 소론이 정권을 잡습니다. 죽인 송시열이 다시 복권돼 가긴 했습니다만, 그래도 소론 쪽이 나았겠죠. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 상황아 바뀌어 갑니다. 특히 문제가 된 것은 장희빈과 세자에 대한 태도였습니다. 소론은 그래도 세자의 어미이니 희빈 강등을 반대합니다. (이래서 실제 왕비 복위는 6월에 이뤄집니다) 그 후에도 장희빈을 직접 희빈이라 부르지는 않았죠. 반면 인현왕후 쪽이었던 숙빈 최씨(영조의 어머니)와 노론은 그 반대였구요. 어찌됐건 이 문제는 장희빈을 죽이고 인현왕후를 복위시킨 걸로 끝났습니다. 하지만 문제가 남아 있었죠. 세자가 크고 있었습니다. 장희빈의 아들이 말이죠. 그리고 숙종의 마음은 인현왕후와 숙종의 사랑을 받던 숙빈 최씨의 아들 연잉군에게로 가고 있었습니다. 병신처분. 1716년의 일입니다. 당시 노소론을 가른 이유 중 하나는 송시열과 윤증의 회니시비였습니다. 윤증의 아버지 윤선거의 비문을 안 좋게 쓰자 (위에 썼듯 남인에 대한 태도 때문에 그랬던 걸로 추정되죠) 윤증이 바꿔달라 했지만 거부했고, 이렇게 골이 쌓여서 사문난적까지 가게 된 거였죠. 이 때까지 숙종은 윤증의 편을 들어줬습니다. 하지만 이 때 태도를 바꿔서 송시열의 편을 들게 됩니다. 이걸로 최종 승자는 노론이 되었습니다. 소론이 환국 때처럼 쓸려나간 건 아니었지만, 노론에게 밀리게 되죠. +) 이 때쯤에는 소론도 충분히 대신들이 많아지면서 젊은 소론, 늙은 노론 이런 의미가 사라지다시피 합니다. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 환국의 원인에 대해서는 크게 둘로 나뉩니다. 특히 장희빈과 인현왕후에 대한 거야 장희빈이 좋아서 서인 죽이고 인현왕후가 다시 좋아져서 남인 죽이고 그랬다는 식이죠. 다른 하나는 그 때 주류였던 당파들이 자기에게 위협이 되자 핑계를 대고 쓸어버렸다는 것이요. 두 개가 어느 정도 섞였겠죠. 당파가 서로를 증오한 것도 컸구요. 그래도 갑술환국은 장희빈이 그렇게 싫었다는 게 더 설득력 있을 정도로 엉망진창입니다만 -_-; 결론은 언제나 하나였을 겁니다. 자기에게 기어올라올만한 것들을 쓸어버리는 것이요. 조선왕조 최고의 정통성을 가지고 불 같은 성미를 가진 그였기에 가능했을 겁니다. 송시열씩이나 되는 사람을 죽인 걸 보면 말이죠. 병자호란의 치욕으로 사대부들은 '더러워진' 조정과 거리를 두려 했습니다. 이런 상황에서 여론을 지배하는 (송시열을 비롯한) 산당을 끌어들일 필요가 있었고, 효종은 그걸 위해 노력했죠. 이 때문에 신권이 너무 강해진 상황이 돼 버렸고, 현종은 슬슬 왕권을 강화해 갔습니다. 숙종의 행동도 여기서 이어진 것이긴 했죠. 하지만 그 방법이 너무 극단적이었습니다. 서인이라고 다 그렇게 남인을 다 죽이길 바란 게 아니었고, 남인 역시 그런 건 아니었습니다. 이들의 대립이 심해져 가긴 했지만, 충분히 왕이 막을 수 있는 거였습니다. 하지만 숙종은 아예 한 쪽을 쓸어버리는 방식을 택합니다. 정여립의 난 때 선조가 류성룡 이산해까지 다 죽여버리고, 동인이 역습을 가하니 정철과 윤두수 등을 다 죽여버리는 식으로 나왔다는 겁니다. 죽인 거야 왕이었지만 왕을 탓할 수 있겠습니까. 오히려 신하들은 왕바라기가 되고 증오는 상대 당파에게로 쏟아집니다. 덕분에 숙종의 왕권은 조선시대 최고 수준이었죠. 하지만, 그 부작용은 너무나도 컸습니다. 왕의 한마디에 당파 하나가 다 쓸려갑니다. 이렇게 왕에게 벌벌 떨게 되었죠. 하지만 왕이 늙어갈수록 그 다음을 보게 됩니다. 자신들의 편이 될 왕이 필요했습니다. 숙종이 어느 한 명에게 힘을 온전히 쏟아줬다면 그러지도 않았을 겁니다. 하지만 세자를 놔두고 다른 왕자에게 맘이 가 버렸죠. 이렇게 신하들은 지지하는 왕이 나뉘어집니다. '택군', 신하가 왕을 선택하는 최악의 상황이 펼쳐진 것이죠. 전에도 이런 일이야 있었습니다. 인종과 명종은 대윤과 소윤으로 나뉘어서 싸웠죠. 하지만 이건 외척 위주였고, 인종의 정통성이 확고했습니다. 인종이 왕이 된 후에도 문정왕후를 비롯한 소윤의 압박이 거셌지만, 인종이 일찍 죽으면서 -_-; 오히려 별 일 없었습니다. 그 소윤도 외척답게 문정왕후가 죽고 윤원형이 죽으면서 힘을 잃고 사라졌구요. 그 다음은 광해군과 영창대군의 경우가 있겠습니다. 광해군은 선조의 바보짓으로 충분히 힘이 부족했지만, 임란을 통한 지지와 영창대군이 너무도 어렸기에 쉽게 끝납니다. 영창대군을 편든 유영경의 소북은 강경파는 당연히 죽고 비교적 소극적이었던 나머지 소북은 그럭저럭 광해군과 잘 살았죠. 하지만 이 때의 기억 때문에 광해군이 형제들도 죽이고 양엄마도 죽이려 드는 막장 상황이 벌어지고 반정까지 당했죠. 그리고 이 때, 소론은 세자의 편을 들었고, 노론은 연잉군의 편을 듭니다. 그리고 숙종이 노론의 편을 들어주면서 세자는 적대 당파의 거대한 도전을 맞게 되죠. 1717년 7월 19일 낮, 숙종은 노론인 좌의정 이이명을 들입니다. 이 때 그만 들어오게 하면서 사관들은 혼란에 빠집니다. 사상 초유의 사태였죠. 사관의 입실 없이 왕이 대신과 만난 겁니다. 이 1~2시간 동안 이어진 알 수 없는 사건을 정유독대라고 합니다. 이후 이이명은 세자의 대리청정을 청하고, 숙종은 받아들입니다. 그 때부터 지금까지, 일반적인 평은 세자에게 대리를 시킨 후 꼬투리를 잡아서 폐세자시킨다는 것입니다. 왕이 연잉군을 맘에 들어하고 노론이 연잉군을 지지하는 상황입니다. 이렇게 제 2의 연산군이 될지도 모르는 거고 말입니다. 노론이 장희빈을 확실히 반대한만큼 노론에겐 이게 가장 컸겠죠. 반면 소론은 정말 몸을 던져가며 세자를 보호합니다. 그들에게는 세자만이 마지막 희망이었죠. 그리고 세자도 최대한 몸을 사렸구요. 숙종 자신의 몸도 그리 좋지 않았습니다. 3년 후인 1720년, 그가 죽게 되면서 세자는 왕이 됩니다. 그때까지도 결코 쉬운 세월은 아니었겠지만, 앞으로 더욱 힘든 일이 닥치죠. 그건 그의 동생 연잉군 역시 마찬가지였습니다. 그들의 아버지가 그들에게 남긴 것은 너무나도 컸습니다. 그리고 연잉군, 영조의 아들이 당한 일 역시 이런 일들과 무관하진 않을 겁니다. 아버지의 아버지가 남긴 것 말이죠. ------------------------------------------------------- 분명히 사도세자 얘기 다시 시작하려고 한 건데 왜 여기까지 왔을까요 -.-; 에효 숙종의 마음은 정말 알다가도 모르겠습니다. 저기서 나온 역모 사건들이 다 어디까지가 사실이고 어디까지가 무고 내지 숙종의 계획일지도 알 수 없구요. 뭐 어느 쪽이든 왕권 강화를 위한 거였다는 것만은 확실하겠습니다만.
