소설이 아닌 에세이를 먼저 읽게 되었던 작가이다. ‘읽는 인간’ 에세이를 재미있게 봤기 때문에 작품도 기대감을 가지고 봤는데... 결론부터 말하면 조금 아쉬웠다. 줄거리 자체는 어렵지 않고 분량도 짧은데 중간 인물들 간의 대화가 중구난방이고 한 단락에서 A와 B가 말하다 갑자기 C와 말한다던지, 한 문장에서 과거와 현재를 왔다 갔다 한다던지 등의 이유로 문장 문장에 집중해서 읽을 수가 없었다. 그리고 작가가 생애 전체에 걸쳐 영문 시에 많은 영향을 받았기 때문인지 영문 시와 일본어 간의 번역, 그것이 다시 한국어로 번역되었을 때 느껴지는 괴리감이 집중력을 흩트렸다. 일본 역사 내의 사건, 일본 전통 연극에 대한 서술 등 외국인 입장에서 이해하기 어려운 부분들은 집중력을 약하게 만드는데 더욱 일조했다. 실제 작가 본인을 소설 속 인물로 등장시켜 이야기를 진행한다. 어디까지가 허구이고 어디까지가 실제 자신의 생각과 행동인지 읽을수록 알기 어렵다. 자신이 알고 있는 작품을 다시 자기 작품 안에 일본 역사와 함께 녹여내는 방식은 타고난 그의 소설가로서의 재능을 느낄 수 있는 부분이었다. 이 작품이 겐자부로의 50년 기념작이라는 것을 다 보고 나서야 알게 되었다. 평생을 문학에 바친 사람으로서 새로운 형식으로의 문학에 대한 갈증, 작가로의 재능을 다 소모해버린 것 같은 무력감과 권태로움에서 현재 자신을 존재하게 하는 문학에 대한 헌정작을 쓰기 위해 왜 세 가지 작품을 선택했는지(폰 클라이스트의 ‘미하엘 콜하스의 운명’과 나보코프의 ‘롤리타’ 그리고 ‘에드거 엘런 포’의 애너벨 리)에 대한 뒷 이야기도 조금 궁금해졌다. 패전 이후 일본 역시 젊은 소녀들이 미군들에게 상처를 입은 역사가 있으면서 스스로 똑같은 범죄를 저지른 일에 대해서는 함구하고 오히려 적반하장의 태도를 취하고 있다는 것이 참으로 놀라웠다.(물론 겐자부로는 일본 우익과 정반대 의견을 가진 몇 안 되는 일본의 지식인이다.) 노년의 남자에 의해 표현되는 여성의 상처와 그것을 극복해 나가는 과정, 즉 현대에 들어 다양한 방식으로 표현되는 페미니즘적 요소가 없다고는 말 못 하겠다. 본래의 의미를 잃은, 한국에서 변질되다 못해 뒤틀린 페미니즘이라는 단어 때문인지, 나에게는 역사적 맥락에 비해 그다지 크게 와 닿지 못하는 부분이었지만, 작가가 이야기하고자 하는 ‘인간’으로서 겪은 평생의 상처를 문학을 통해 치유하는 것, 그것에 대한 찬가로 작은 울림을 느낄 수 있었다.
