* 글 내용에서 언급한 영화 내용은, 대부분 이미 숱한 인터넷상의 말들이나 일부 언론으로 공개된 내용들이기는 하지만 영화의 내용을 약간 담고 있는지라 [약 스포]를 붙였습니다. 한글 창제의 역사(?)를 조명했으나, 역사 자체를 왜곡하여 오만 가지 욕을 다 먹고 있는 영화 '나랏말싸미'. 손익분기점이 무려 350만 관객이니 얼마나 많은 비용이 들어갔을지 짐작할 만 하지만 미래는 어둡습니다. 스스로 자초한 논란으로 '나랏말싸미'는 개봉 1주일도 되지 않아 각종 언론과 관객들로부터 그야말로 난도질당하고 말았습니다. 아니. '나랏말싸미'의 흥행 참패 흐름을 다루고 역사 왜곡을 비판하는 기사들을 보면 HP는 이미 0이 된 것 같아 보입니다. 감독이 장문의 글을 올려 관객에 대한 존중을 표하고 불교계에서 관람 응원에 나서는 등 영화를 살리기 위한 노력을 하고 있으나 지금의 추세로 보면 기적의 역주행이라도 일어나지 않는 한 때는 늦었다고 생각됩니다. 아니, 설령 그렇게 해서 100만 관객이라도 넘고 며칠이라도 더 은막에 걸린다 한들 과연 그것이 영화를 살리기 위한 노력인지부터가 의아해질 정도입니다. 그렇게 보이는 것은, 그들의 해명과 노력에 서린 것이 진심이 아니라 욕심이기 때문이라고 저는 생각합니다. 먼저 조철현 감독이 영화 개봉 이후 태세 전환을 하여 관객에 대한 존중을 표했음에도 관객의 냉담한 마음을 돌리지 못한 데에는 세 가지 원인이 있습니다. 하나. 그 이전에 했던 감독 자신의 언행과 모순된 행동이기 때문입니다. '나랏말싸미'의 촬영을 마치고 조철현 감독은 불교 방송에 출연해 신미라는 인물의 위대함을 칭송하면서 신미를 세종대왕과 나란히 세워도 될 인물이고 단순히 영화적 인물이 아니라 우리 사회가 오랫동안 기억해야 할 위인이라는 식으로 이야기했으며, 개봉 보름쯤 전에는 영화에서 담은 한글 창제의 내용이 역사적 가설이라는 자막을 넣고 싶지 않았다고 말하며 자신의 역사에 대한 깊이를 자랑했습니다. 그런 행동을 하며 자신이 역사적 사실을 다뤘다고 자부하던 사람이 이제 와서 관객을 존중한다 한들 과연 누가 진심으로 들을지 의문입니다. 둘. 관객을 존중한다고 한 장문의 글에서도 자신의 역사 왜곡에 대해서는 일언반구의 사과를 찾아볼 수 없었습니다. 감독은 '소통'의 문제를 이야기했지만, 사실 '나랏말싸미'의 문제는 소통이 아니라 영화에서 다룬 사실 자체가 다른 것이었기 때문이지요. 불교계 언론을 필두로, '나랏말싸미'에 담은 역사(?)가 옳고 신미가 한글창제에 공헌을 했다는 목소리가 일부 있지만 그들은 세종대왕이 신미의 이름을 들은 시점이 실록에 이미 훈민정음의 제작이 끝난 1446년이고 만난 건 1450년으로 기록된 점을 뒤집을 직접적 증거를 내놓지 못했고, 고작해야 각종 정황증거를 들어 '실록보다 먼저 알았을 정황이 있다' 수준에 지나지 않는, 흔한 유사역사학에 대한 변호 수준의 옹호를 하고 있습니다. 이런 역사 왜곡을 조철현 감독은 명확하게 인정하지 않고 있습니다. 셋. 세종대왕을 폄하할 의도가 없었다는 말도 비겁한 변명에 불과합니다. 사료에 기록된 바에 의하면 세종대왕은 신하들이 훈민정음 반포를 막으려 하자 "네가 운서(韻書)를 아느냐. 사성칠음(四聲七音)에 자모(字母)가 몇이나 있느냐. 만일 내가 그 운서를 바로잡지 아니하면 누가 이를 바로잡을 것이냐"라고 말하고 투옥시키기도 했습니다. 요즘 말대로라면, 신하들에게 '언어에 대해 알지도 못하는 것들아. 내가 바로잡지 않으면 누가 바로잡으란 말이냐'라고 일갈한 셈입니다. 또한 백성들에게 훈민정음으로 삼강행실도를 번역시켜 봐야 아무 의미 없다고 말하던 정창손에 대해서는 선비의 이치도 모르는 용속한 자라고 말하며 파직시켜 버렸지요. (유교의 근본도 모르는 헛소리였으니 당연한 일입니다.) 그런데 '나랏말싸미'에서는 신하들이 세종대왕에게 "주상은 왕의 탈을 쓴 거지요!"라고 말하고, 세종대왕은 신하들에게 "너희가 도와주지 않으면 무엇도 될 수 없는 늙고 병든 임금일 뿐이다."라는 소리를 합니다. 심지어 스님들에게는 왕 노릇 똑바로 하라는 소리를 듣습니다. 조선이라는 나라의 국왕에게, 더욱이 태종이 아들의 외척까지 멸문한 피의 숙청을 저지르며, 강력한 권력기반을 물려준 세종대왕에게 그런 소리를 했다면 그 사람은 그 날 바로 거적때기에 실린 주검이 되었어도 주위에서 아무 말도 못 했을 것입니다. 조선 초기에, 가장 강력한 권력을 자랑하던 제왕을, 누군가의 허접한 역사적 주장을 부각시키기 위해 비루한 늙은이로 만들어 버린 셈입니다. 무엇보다 왕 앞에서 기본적인 예의범절도 모르는 행동들만으로도, 그것부터가 폄하가 아니면 과연 무엇이 폄하인가 싶습니다. 다음으로 불교계의 행동에 대해 이야기를 해 보겠습니다. 저는 불자는 아니지만, 그렇다 해도 부처님의 자비에 대한 이야기는 꽤 많이 들었고, 친척 중에도 불자가 많은지라 불교에 대해 나름 좋은 인상도 가지고 있는 상태입니다. 그러나 불교계 언론을 중심으로 '나랏말싸미'의 역사왜곡에 대해 변호 또는 옹호하는 기사와 칼럼 등이 게재되고, 나아가 이미 생명이 꺼져가고 있는 영화 보러가기 운동을 하는 요즘의 상황은, 저에게 참으로 암담한 기분이 들게 만듭니다. 종교가 세상에 빛이 되는 게 아니라 욕을 먹는 이유는 여러 가지가 있지만 가장 대표적인 것은 세상과 유리된 아집과 독선의 모습일진대, 이번엔 슬프게도 불교계가 그런 모습을 보여주고 있기 때문입니다. 우선 앞서 말한 것처럼 세종대왕이 신미라는 스님을 알게 된 것은 조선왕조실록에 병인년(1446년)부터라고 명확하게 기록이 되어 있고, 또한 실제로 만난 것은 1450년입니다. 그러니 신미라는 스님이 훈민정음 제작에 관여했다는 것은 세종대왕이 실록의 기록보다 먼저 신미를 만난 근거를 보여주지 못하는 시점에서 이미 말도 안 되는 소리입니다. 예전에도 신미 훈민정음 창제설, <원각선종석보>등을 근거로 한 주장 등이 돌았지만 관련 서적이 위서이거나 주장 자체가 근거가 없다고 결론이 나고 말았지요. 하지만 불교계는 '나랏말싸미'의 촬영 전후에 오히려 속리산에 신미 한글 공원을 조성하는 등 영화의 완성과 개봉을 전후하여 불교계의 위상을 높이려는 언플을 했습니다. 그렇잖아도 조철현 감독은 시사회장에서 실제로 영화 제작에 불교계의 지원이 물심양면으로 있었다고 스스로 밝혔기 때문에 의도가 있든 아니든 '나랏말싸미'에 대해 불교 프로파간다 영화가 아닌가 하는 의심이 들고 있는 상황이었는데, 이러한 불교계의 움직임들은 그 의심이 합리적이라는 생각이 들게끔 하는 원인이 되었지요. 심지어, 역사왜곡 논란이 거세지자 불교계 언론들이 벌인 행동은 더욱 얼척없는 일들이었습니다. 승가대학교의 교수는 물론 언론사 편집국장이나 소설가의 기고 등을 통해 '나랏말싸미'를 옹호하며 개신교계 언론들이 문제를 제기한다고 폄훼하거나, 역사왜곡이 아니라는 식으로 억지를 부리는가 하면, 어떤 승려는 우리 힘으로 '나랏말싸미' 천만명 기록을 세울 수 있다고 말하기까지 합니다. 마치 정치와 문화계에 헛된 짓을 하고 있는, 세상 욕심에 타락한 개신교 지도자들의 발언을 다시 돌려 보는 듯한 기시감입니다. 이들이 '나랏말싸미'또는 '신미 창제설'을 옹호하면서 던진 말들은 역사를 전공하지 않은 제 눈으로 봐도 참으로 얼척없는 소리입니다. '역사적 진실은 다양한 각도에서 접근해야 된다고 본다. 특히 상상력의 예술이 역사적 진실의 지평을 더욱 넓히는 순기능이 있다는 것을 이해했으면 좋겠다.' '예술가의 상상력이 때로 정설만을 신봉하는 학자들에게 영감을 줄 수도 있는 것이다.' '신미가 한글의 창제자인지는 단언할 수 없지만, 한글 창제에 승려가 관여했다는 점만은 충분한 타당성을 가진다.' '아이폰을 만든 것은 스티브 잡스지만, 이의 완성에는 의당 잡스를 도와준 집단지성이 존재하게 마련이다.' '픽션인 영화를 통한 상상력과 가설을 얹고 철학과 종교 그리고 역사를 이해하려는 시도가 이런 봉변을 당하다니.' '신미 스님이 한글 창제에 협력했다는 직접적인 증거는 없다. 그렇더라도 한글의 모양과 음운학, 또 훈민정음 창제 후 곧바로 실시된 불경간행에서 훈민정음에 대한 신미 스님의 깊은 이해를 엿볼 수 있다.' '그 시대에는 성리학이라는 틀에서 벗어나는 것을 허용하지 않았다면, 지금은 기존의 통념과 이미지에서 벗어난 것에 대한 혹독한 비난과 멸시가 뒤따른다. 그것이 예나 지금이나 신미 스님과 이 땅의 불교가 겪어야 숙명인 걸까.' 빈약하거나, 존재하지도 않는 근거를 몇 마디 요사스러운 언어로 대신하려는 이런 말들을 세종대왕께서 현세에 강림해 보셨다면 드라마 <뿌리깊은 나무>의 '명대사'를 읊고도 남았을 소리입니다. (무슨 대사인지는, 말하지 않겠습니다.) 정리하며, 저는 감독과 불교계가 역사왜곡으로 인한 반작용이 발생할 위험을 몰랐을 리 만무하다고 생각합니다. 여러 기사로 보건대, 조철현 감독은 '나랏말싸미'를 제작하며 공부했던 자신의 역사적 지식에 자부심을 가졌고 신미라는 인물을 재조명하고 싶던 욕심이 있었습니다. 불교계는 이 영화로 훈민정음의 창제과정에 불교의 위상이 재조명되기를 바라는 욕심이 있었고, 자신들이 역사학계에 내놓았던 폐기된 학설이 되살아나면 더 좋은 게 아니었을까 싶습니다. 그래서 저는, 이들이 시쳇말로 '선을 넘는'순간, '역사왜곡'이라는 굴레가 모두를 덮치게 될 것이라고 생각했다 해도 이를 애써 외면한 게 아닐까 추측해 봅니다. '욕심' 때문에 말입니다. 그리고 '그 욕심'들은, 좋은 배우들의 연기 속에 허구가 담겨 있는 판타지 역사 영화로 기억될 수도 있었던 영화를 망치고 말았습니다. 대한민국과 대한민국 사람들은 숱한 역사왜곡을 겪었고, 그래서 역사왜곡에 대한 아픔과 분노가 매우 강한 편에 속합니다. 근현대 일제 강점기의 역사왜곡은 말할 것도 없고, 환단고기 같은 위서나 노론 음모론 등을 비롯한 유사역사학자들의 역사왜곡은 터지기만 하면 엄청난 논쟁거리가 되고 있고 사람들에게 상처를 주고 있으며, 가장 가깝게는 잊을 만 하면 터지는 일본 또는 일본에 동조하는 한일 역사관계에 대한 망언이나, 5.18같은 대한민국 역사 속 부당한 국가 권력에 의한 범죄로 규정된 것에 대한 망언들, 박근혜씨가 박근혜 정부 때에 벌인 국정교과서 역사왜곡까지. 이렇듯 대한민국은 역사왜곡에 대한 상처가 많습니다.
