 시작부터 끝까지 일반인에다 기술 꼬꼬마의 사견입니다... 근래에 HMD 하나를 장만해서 좀 기대를 갖고 방문했습니다. 2만원의 입장료를 꾸역꾸역 미련하게 내고 들어갔습니다. 실망도 한참 실망했습니다. VR은 말 그대로 가상 '현실'인데 이 가상 '현실'을 얼마만큼이나 '현실적'으로 구현해낼 수 있느냐가 이 기술의 가장 중요한 점이라 생각하거든요. 시청각 출력과 컨텐츠, 네 정말 중요합니다. 하지만 진짜 같다는 느낌은 아주 다양한 방면에서 접근해야 합니다. 최우선적으로 3D 멀미를 어떻게 잘 해결해야 하는지가 가장 중요하고(이거 아예 없는 사람은 한명도 못봤고, 있는 사람은 정말 5초만 써도 토할 것 같다 합니다.), 나의 움직임이 얼마나 사실적으로 가상공간에 구현되는지도 매우! 중요하고(실제로 화면 움직임에 따라 제 자리에서 걷기만 해도 3D 멀미가 꽤나 개선되거든요), 진짜 같다는 느낌을 주는 촉각,온감,후각,중력이 주는 느낌,피부로 느끼는 공간감 등등을 어떻게 창의적으로 구현해내는지도 중요합니다. 사람의 감각이 복잡해보이지만 사실 속이고자 마음 먹으면 구멍이 슝슝슝 보일정도로 허술하기에 방향은 무궁무진합니다. 물론 현재 기술상 모든 것을 다 만족시킬 수 없습니다. 하지만 자신만의 기술력을 조금이나마 개발해서 하나에라도 집중한다면 분명 해외 바이어들도 입맛 땡기는 뭔가를 만들어 낼 수 있을더라 확신합니다. 제가 엑스포에 기대했던건 이런 창의적인 실험들이었는데... 뭔 개떡같은.... 해외에서 개발한 HMD를 그대로 쓰는건 뭐 이해합니다. HMD도 어찌보면 안드로이드나 윈도우처럼 플랫폼이니까 파이가 큰 놈을 쓸수록 호환성 문제가 적고 컨텐츠도 풍부하고 단가도 내려가니 일반 소비자의 접근성도 좋아지니까요. 근데 무슨 몇년도부터 시작했는지 모를 롤러코스터와 4DX의자에 사람 태우는 짓이나, X같은 거북선 갖다 놓고 위에서 활질하라 하지 않나, 자전거 패달 같은거 갖다 놓고 사이버트래드밀이라 하질 않나(시현을 기다리는 중, 한참 고장나서 낑낑대도 고치고 있는걸 봤는데, 허접하기 이루 말할 수 없는 구조여서 혀를 찼습니다.), 실망감만 가득 주는 부스들만 눈에 밟혔고 이것들이 대부분이었습니다. 이게 아니면 이미 만들어져있는 기술이나 아이디어로 "우리는 꿀만 빨겠셔유" 느낌의 이미테이션 컨텐츠를 생산하는 부스도 대다수였고요. 현장에서 일하는 직원들이나 설명해주는 사람들도 생판 초보인 저도 알만한 기술적인 용어들도 하나도 모르고, 물건 판다는 사람이 이 물건이 호환성이 어떤지 사양이 어떤지도 모른다는 것도 한참 마이너스 요인이었습니다. 진짜 어디 '돈줄해주실 아무것도 모르는 쩐주 구합니다' 느낌의 설명만 가능해보여서 안타깝기 그지 없었습니다. 엑스포를 떠나면서 느낀건 '전혀 성장하지 않았어..' 와 외국 각종 킥스타터 사이트에 올라오는 신박한 기술들을 정말 우리나라는 하나도 만들 기술력이 없어서 안하는건지 의구심만 들고, 이미 중국한테 다 따라잡히다 못해 이미 한참 전에 추월당했구나 라는 생각도 들었습니다.(제 HMD는 중국제 Pimax 8K고 시야각 뽕이 죽여줍니다. 무려 시야각 200도의 영상을 보고 있으면 "햐.. 셰샹조아져따" 소리가 절로 나옵니다. 물론 사소하고 중대한 결함들이 많지만 이거 하나 믿고 씁니다.) 앞으로 3년간은 VR 엑스포는 갈 일이 없다 생각합니다. 그때까지 이 판이 살아있을지는 모르겠지만서도요. 킥스터타 사이트 구경이 훨씬 재밌어요. 뭐, (벗어나려는 노력들은 있지만) 현재 HMD로 대변되는 국내 VR 생태계가 어떻게 형성된 것인지를 생각하면 당연한 결과입니다. 아는 업체들이 많아 깊숙한 얘기는 하기 어렵지만 이 엑스포는 특정 업체 몇이 주도하여 개최되는 엑스포이고, 나름 해당 업체들의 라인들도 있어 더욱 그렇습니다. 거북선 VR의 경우 기존과 다른 나름 주목 끌 형태로 나온 어트랙션인데 지인 분이 참여하고 계셔서 형태는 전부터 알고 있었지만 실물을 직접 보니 상당히 실망스러웠습니다.

VR은 일찍부터 소규모 테마파크 성격으로 일찍부터 주목받고 있었습니다. 테마파크를 직접 갖추려면 조성 및 구축에 조 단위 비용이 들어가는데 VR 테마파크는 유사한 체험을 제공하면서 비용은 1%~0.01%면 되니까요. 또, 아직까지 B2C 시장은 사실상 없는 상태라 B2B나 B2G 위주로 흘러가고 있고, 지속적인 수익화까지 기대하다 보니 지나치게 시뮬레이터 위주의 콘텐츠들만 나옵니다. 탑승물 또는 총싸움이 전시물의 대부분을 차지하는 이유죠.
꿀만 빨겠다는 구조는 아닙니다. 개발 업체들은 나름 많은 고민을 해서 제품을 내놓습니다. 그 업체들이 대부분 영세해서 세심한 곳까지 신경을 잘 못 쓰는 게 가장 크죠. 근본적으로는 외국에서 만든 제품, 외국에서 만든 엔진, 외국에서 만든 툴을 갖고 개발을 하니 경쟁력이 없는 거죠. 아무튼 이런 경쟁력 없는 업체들은 조만간 다 정리되겠죠. 진짜 굴 빠는 건 대기업입니다. 아젠다 제시도 못하면서 수익에 목마른 영세 업체들 등쳐먹는 짓부터 하거든요.
킥스타터와 직접 비교는 어렵지요. 킥스타터를 대중성 있는 곳이라 말할 수는 없고, 국내 투자 환경을 고려하면 더욱 그렇습니다.
