SKT 팀 동료들은 페이커를 실망시켰다는 비난을 받았다. 위대함을 비교할 사람이 없을 때, 위대함을 감사하는 것이 더 쉽다. 르브론, 메시, 호날두는 그들 세대에서 가장 훌륭한 팀 스포츠 선수일 수도 있다. 다른 누군가가 그들보다 좋은 선수일지라도 그들이 어떤 기분인지를 진정으로 이해하지 못할 것이다. 그들이 처한 상황은 그들이 원한 게 아니며 역대 최고 선수의 스토리를 보고 싶어하는 우리들이 만들어낸 것이다. 마지막으로 내 생각은, 만약 당신이 GOATs가 누군지 논쟁하고 싶다면, 이 글에 있는 세 선수가 은퇴할 때까지 기다리라는 것이다. 그리고 누가 더 못하는지를 가리는 것이 아닌, 누가 더 빛나는지를 생각해고 따져보아라. 디테일하게 따지면 동의하지 않는 부분도 있지만, 전체적인 논지가 마음에 들어서 가지고 와봤습니다. 챔스 3연패 이전 호날두의 대한 평가가 생각나기도 하고.. 르브론의 플레이 스타일에 대한 이야기도 흥미로운 이야기죠. 언더독 이야기는 좀 우습긴하지만... 사실 현대에는 미디어 자체가 원초적이고 자체적인 권력을 가지고 있다기보다는, 팬들의 목소리를 미디어가 더 많이 반영하고 그것을 기반으로 힘을 가지고 있다는 개인적인 생각을 하고 있기는 합니다. 미디어도 팬들의 입맛에 맞지 않는 이야기를 하면 쉽게 무시되는게 일상이죠. 반대로 별다른 근거나 정당한 논리가 없어도 팬들의 입맛에 맛는 이야기를 내세우면 미디어의 타이틀만을 가지고도 권위를 갖게 됩니다. 머리 속에 이러한 예시로 생각나는게 ESPN의 NBA 올타임 랭킹. 10여년 전쯤에는 전문 칼럼리스트 10명 남짓한 사람들이 자기 이름도 까고 평가 점수도 공개하면서 세세하게 포지션별 랭킹을 메기곤 했는데, 1-2년 전에는 거의 아무런 설명없이 ESPN 타이틀만 내걸고 Top 100 이야기를 내걸었죠. 80년대 이전 선수들이 엄청나게 저평가되고 커리어가 끝나지도 않은 현 세대 선수들이 필요 이상의 고평가를 받았는데 팬들한테는 현재 선수들의 후한 평 덕인지 그 이전보다도 크게 지지를 받던 이상한 랭킹. 본론으로 돌아와서 팀 스포츠에서 개인의 역량을 과하게 보고 있다는 전체적인 견지에는 매우 동의하는 바입니다. 그것이 비록 NBA라도 말이죠. 이 칼럼에서는 그것을 피할 수 없는 숙명 정도로 보고 있지만, 저는 슈퍼스타에게 책임을 씌우는 그러한 관점들이 분명하게 틀렸다고 봅니다. 물론 그것은 역설적으로 대중스포츠가 성장하는 매우 좋은 기반이기도 하지만... 한 경기 한 경기보면서 펠마메호크베디나 조던릅3센터매버던샼코 같은 줄 세우기 하는게 얼마나 재미있습니까. 이런게 있기에 스포츠가 더 크게 흥행할 수 있는 거겠죠. 그리고 그러기 위해서는 결국 팀 스포츠의 업적을 개인에게 귀속시키는 것이 필연적인 일. '메시, 호날두, 르브론 같은 슈퍼스타가 아무리 잘해도 사실 팀에 승패에 그렇게까지 큰 영향을 미치지는 못한다.'라는 주장은 로망을 가지고 있는 스포츠 팬들에게는 받아들이기 힘든 가설일테니까요. 특히나 한 스포츠 선수를 응원하는 팬이라면 더더욱. 다 쓰고 보니까 정작 제 입맛대로 글을 읽고 이야기하다보니 제목이 붕뜨는 느낌이 드네요.
