사실 이 영화의 장르는 히어로 무비입니다. 인셉션이나 인터스텔라 같은 SF가 아니죠. 그렇기 때문에 세세한 설정에 필요 이상의 의문점을 표하는 것은 "님들 왜 세일러문 빌런들은 변신할 때 공격 안하는거죠? 바보들인가?" 라는 질문과 별반 다르지 않게 됩니다. 하지만 마블 시네마틱 유니버스(이하 MCU)에서는 히어로들의 능력을 코믹스에 비해 대폭 너프시키는 등 어느정도의 현실성을 담보하기 위해 노력했고, 이러한 점이 아니더라도 영화 내에서 가져야할 일관성과 개연성 등을 관객들이 요구하는 것은 전혀 이상한 것이 아니기 때문에... 제가 엔드게임을 다시 관람하면서 느껴졌던 점들을 몇가지 써보려고 합니다. 1. 인트로 오리지날 트랙이 나오던 지금까지의 마블 영화와 달리 오프닝에서 노래를 틀어줬죠. 찾아보니 Traffic의 Dear Mr. Fantasy라는 노래였네요. 노래의 제목을 알고보니 이 노래가 삽입된 이유가 더 이해가 가긴 합니다. 이후에 토니 스타크와 네뷸라와의 씬과도 어느정도 어울렸고... 그런데 바로 직전 장면이 호크 아이가 가족들을 핑거 스냅에 잃고 당황해하던 장면이었죠. 처음 관람했을 때 좀 뜬금없다고 생각했었고, 다시 볼 때도 그 어색함은 지울 수 없었습니다. 영화의 의미를 생각해보면 선곡 자체는 나이스하다고 보는데 이럴거면 왜 호크 아이 씬을 맨 처음에 넣은건지.. 2. 캡틴 마블의 토니 스타크 구조  물론 전작 캡틴 마블의 쿠키 영상에서 캡틴 마블이 지구로 호출되어 정황을 파악한다는 내용은 보여줬습니다. 그런데 이 구조 씬은 정말 뜬금없었습니다. 절박한 상황에서 온갖 분위기 다 잡고 생을 마감하는 수준으로 눈을 감았는데 갑자기 캡틴 마블이 딱! 그리고 심지어 손으로 들어서 지구로 운반 딱! 너무 뜬금없었습니다. 러닝 타임은 제한되어 있고 할 이야기는 많다지만 이 씬을 개연성있게 진행하는 데에는 그렇게 많은 시간이 필요하지도 않았습니다. 하다못해 토니 스타크가 계속해서 구조 신호를 사방으로 보내고 있었고 그 구역을 지나가던 캡틴 마블이 우연히 발견해 데리고 왔다고해도 이것보단 나았을 겁니다. 생각해보면 지구에서는 토니 스타크는 블랙 오더 에보니 모의 우주선을 탄 이후부터 단순 실종이었던 것 같은데... 핑거 스냅에 죽었는지 아닌지도 모르는 상황인데 캡틴 마블이 지구에서 토니 스타크의 실종 소식을 듣고 우주로 날아가 구석구석 찾다가 발견해서 우주선을 통째로 들고 왔다? 개연성이 너무 떨어지는 연출이 아닌가 합니다. 이럴거면 초반 그 분위기는 왜 잡은거고... 결과적으로 이 장면에서 건질 수 있는게 캡틴 마블 짱짱이네 정도 말고 뭐 있나요? 티저로도 수차례 보여줬던 토니 스타크의 독백은 거의 낚시 수준으로 전락해버렸습니다. 3. 뉴 헐크  물론 헐크 시리즈는 인크레더블 헐크 이후로 나온적이 없지만 MCU에서 헐크를 묘사할 때 핵심적으로 보여주던 것 중 하나는 브루스 배너와 헐크 사이에서의 내면적 갈등. 당장 전작 인피니티 워에서는 그것이 헐크의 메인 이슈였습니다. 그래서 인피니티 워 이후에는 헐크가 나오지 않은 이유가 무어냐, 배너가 헐크를 필요할 때만 부르는 것에 대해 갈등을 느꼈던거냐 혹은 정말 타노스한테 복날 개쳐맞듯이 두들겨 맞고 무서워서 안나오는거냐 등등 여러가지 이야기 거리도 많았습니다. 그런데 엔드게임에서 첫 등장하자마자 이 이야기는 깔끔하게 끝났죠. "감마선 안에서 나랑 걔랑 오랫동안 잘 이야기해서 화해했음 흐흐 이제 우리 하나임" 아 이건 좀... 빠른 이야기 전개를 위해 마지막에 포기한 영역이라고 믿고 싶습니다. 이거 수습하려면 추후에 이 이야기를 다루는 하나의 독립적인 헐크 시리즈가 나와야 될 수준 아닌지. 4. 캡틴 마블의 파워 밸런스  확실히 캡틴 마블의 파워 밸런스는 아무리봐도 어색합니다. 뜬금없이 등장한 건방진 막차 히어로인데다가 현실에서도 별로 맘에 안드는 행동을 하는 배우라 비호감인데 쓰잘데기없이 너무 쎄네? 이런걸 떠나서 캡틴 마블 내적으로도 파워 밸런스가 안맞는다는 느낌이 강하게 들죠. 전작에서 블랙 오더 에보니 모도 우주공간에 노출되자마자 얼어 죽었어요. 그 이전으로 넘어가면 약 캐릭터는 커녕 오히려 강캐에 들어가는 욘두도 피터 퀼 살리려다가 우주공간에서 숨 못쉬어서 죽었습니다. 그것도 정말 애달프게... 근데 이 친구는 무려 인간 베이스인데도 그딴거 없습니다. 숨만 잘 쉬는 것도 아니라 우주선 옆에 나란히 서서 돌아다닐 수 있을 정도의 이동성도 가지고 있어요. 이동성 뿐입니까? 그냥 몸체로 돌진해서 적군 우주선 통째로 부셔먹는게 특기입니다. 그것도 조그만 우주선이 아니라 타노스 전함도 통째로 부셔먹을 수준. 아이언맨이든 스칼렛 워치든 닥터 스트레인지까지도 그 전함을 단신으로 가볍게 제압할 수 있는 히어로가 없었습니다. 타노스보고 하라고 해도 못할걸요. MCU를 통틀어서 이러한 연출이 가능한 히어로는 캡틴 마블을 제외하면 스톰 브레이커를 얻은 직후의 토르 정도 밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 어마어마하게 쌘 것도 알았습니다. 근데 정작 타노스와의 육탄전은 굉장히 평범합니다. 노템 타노스를 살짝 앞서는 수준이고 그마저도 타노스는 캡틴 아메리카, 아이어맨, 뚱르와 3 대 1로 싸우다가 온 타노스입니다. 우주 전함을 손바닥 뒤집듯 가볍게 제압하는 히어로가 인피니티 스톤을 전부 획득한 풀템 타노스도 아니고 노템 타노스한테 건틀릿 뺏는게 어려워서 쩔쩔매고 있으니 이걸 어떻게 받아들여야할지 난감할 수 밖에요. 토르의 퇴장이 유력하던 시기, 그리고 아이언맨을 이을 차세대 마블의 아이콘으로 선정된 캡틴 마블의 파워를 상상 이상으로 세게 잡아 놓은 것은 이상한 것이 아닙니다. 하지만 캡틴 마블 영화에서도 볼 수 있듯이 파워 획득 시나리오는 다른 히어로들보다 정교하지 않았고 그에 비해 얻은 힘은 지나치게 강합니다. 그러면서도 그 힘을 보여주는 연출은 불균형적이고요. 그러니 이 히어로를 보고 관객들이 의아함을 계속해서 느끼는 것은 단순한 캐릭터에 대한 불호감 뿐만은 아닐겁니다. 5. 스티브 로저스를 선택한 캡틴 아메리카  그리고 논란의 마지막 장면 연출. 노인이 되어서 나타난 캡틴 아메리카. 아마 이번 엔드게임 최고의 논란거리. 물론 나중에 케빈 파이기든 누구든 이것에 대해 설정을 설명(에 가까운 해명)할 것이라 생각합니다. 극적인 장면을 위해서 그러한 연출을 사용할 수도 있어요. 하지만 너무 장면 욕심을 부린게 아닌가 조금 아쉽습니다. 영화를 보는 사람들이 그래서 저 캡틴이 양자 터널을 타고 돌아온거야? 계속 살다가 나타난거야? 라는 것부터 헷갈리기 시작했습니다. 물론 연출이 멋있긴 헀어요. 그러니까 그 의문을 가지기 전에 일단 '끝내주게 멋있고 분위기 있네~' 하고 넘어가주는거지... 저도 이 쪽 입장에 가깝긴 하지만, 그래도 엄밀하게 따지면 이건 영화적 연출의 허용 선을 넘었다고 봅니다. 조금만 더 타협했으면 관객들을 납득시키면서도 장면을 멋있게 연출할 수 있었어요 충분히. 노인이 되어 벤치에 앉아있는 스티브 로저스, 이 장면 하나를 멋있게 만들기 위해 2시간 전에 열심히 숨도 못쉬며 설명하던 스콧 랭만 불쌍하게 되었죠. 게다가 이 이슈는 인피니티 사가 자체를 끝내는 마지막 해결책과 관련있는 주제였는데...  그리고 미국 솔지 돌려내라 이 나쁜 블루 스컬 놈아 이외 짜잘한 의문들 6. 모건 스타크  MCU는 좀 과하다 싶을 정도로 가족의 의미를 강조합니다. 히어로로써의 동기 부여와 삶의 이유도 그들의 가족들과 밀접하게 연관이 되고요. 직접적으로 혈연관계가 없는 인물들이라도 가족으로 연결고리가 이어지면서 강조되는 인물들도 많았습니다. 욘두라던가, 그루트, 나타샤의 죽음 때도 처음 나온 대사가 '그녀에게 가족은 있었어?' 였으니. 그런 측면에서 토니 스타크와 페퍼 포츠의 딸 모건 스타크가 좀 붕 떠보였습니다. 시간 강탈 프로젝트를 한사코 거부하던 가장 중요한 이유는 바로 자신이 딸 모건 스타크였습니다. 프로젝트에 참여할 때도 그것에 대해서 스티브 로저스에게 재차 확인시켰던걸로 기억을 합니다. 그럼에도 토니 스타크가 죽음에 이르기까지 한 순간도 언급되지 않는 본인 딸. 유사 부자관계 느낌을 주는 피터 파커가 살아 돌아왔을 때에 아들을 찾은 것 마냥 포옹을 했는데, 정작 본인 딸 이야기는 없이 죽어버렸습니다. 물론 그것을 포기하면서 세상을 구했으니 그가 어벤져스 최고의 히어로로 남을 수 있었겠지만... 이러한 점들 때문에 종종 여기저기서 '토니 스타크가 피터 파커를 그렇게까지 애지중지하는 이유가 뭔가요?'란 질문이 나왔던거라 생각합니다. 7. 인피니티 스톤을 쥔 아이언맨  인피니티 스톤의 파워는 어마어마해서 그 힘을 사용하는 것을 떠나 스톤을 소화하는 것만으로도 어지간한 존재들은 목숨을 담보하지 못합니다. 가디언즈 오브 갤럭시 1에서 클라이맥스 때 연출되었던 핵심적인 장면이기도 하고... 스타로드는 반신반인이었는데도 죽음의 문턱까지 다녀왔었죠. 헐크가 건틀릿을 끼고 6개의 스톤 힘을 모두 버텨내면서 그 힘을 사용하는데 성공한 연출까지는 괜찮았습니다. 헐크는 세계관 최고의 종족이라던 아스가르드인들마저도 인정하는 육체니까... 근데 100% 인간 밖에 안되는 토니 스타크는 핑거 스냅 이전까지 나름 멀쩡하게 대사도 쳤습니다. 물론 그 대사가 인피니티 사가 역대 최고의 간지 대사라서 이 장면에 불편함 따위는 없었습니다.... 가슴이 머리를 굴복시킨 예. 뭐 그냥 그렇다고요. 불쌍한건 워머신한테 '저런 등신이었어?'란 소리까지 들었던 스타로드 뿐... 아 한 명 더 있네요. 그래도 우주에서 평범하게 천재라고 불리는 몇 명이 뚝딱 만들어 낼 수 있는 인피니티 건틀릿 때문에 한쪽 팔에다가 동족을 전부 잃은 에이트리.... 이외 거슬리지 않았지만 그냥 말하고 싶은 주제들 8. 페미씬  인피니티 건틀릿을 옮기는 과정에서 연출된 소위 '페미씬' 때문에 분위기를 깨신 분들이 꽤 있던 것 같더라구요. 저도 1회차 때부터 보자마자 그 생각이 들긴 했는데 그 사상을 드러내는 것보다 소위 땡처리에 가까운 수준이라... 제가 그 사상 신봉자였으면 오히려 화가 났을 것 같습니다. 그 장면을 연출한 사람이 그런 의도를 가지고 있었는지 아닌지는 이제 그루트의 영역이지만 크게 문제 잡을 거리는 못된다고 생각합니다. 2회차 때 느낀 점인데 전투 씬이 정말 어마어마하게 짧아요. 이번 엔드게임 평을 좋게 주지 않는 사람들의 주장이기도 하고... 그 와중에 거의 모든 배우들의 전투 장면을 자연스럽게 집어넣는 것부터가 참 고역이었겠다는 생각이 2회차 때 들었습니다. 실제로 라그나로크를 제외한 발키리의 유일한 전투씬이 이 장면에서 나오죠. 따지고보면 인피니티 워 때도 여성 히어로 위주의 전투씬이 있었습니다. 그 때는 블랙오더 프록시마 미드나이트와 싸우는 히어로들이 전부 여자 히어로들이었죠. 그러고보니 죽어버린 블랙 위도우를 빼면 그 멤버가 그멤버... 거기에 마블 코믹스의 에이포스 오마쥬도 있고... 그 사상을 가지고 그 장면을 넣었다하더라도 거의 의미가 없는 수준이라 생각합니다. 저는 그보다 불편했던 점이 있다면 굳이 따질 때 비전투인원에 포함되는 슈리가 그 장면까지 포함해서 계속해서 전투씬에 포함이 되었어야 했나... 정도? 그리고 아이언맨 3에서의 능력 자체는 지워버렸음에도 수트를 사용해 어벤져스 10년차마냥 능숙한 전투 스킬을 보여줬던 페퍼 포츠의 레스큐 슈트에서 이질감이 들었습니다. 제가 보는 눈이 좋지 못해서 처음에는 페퍼인지도 몰랐어요. 9. 너프된 뚱르  사실상 세계관 최강자, 토르가 드라마틱하게 너프되어 뚱르가 된 것에 아쉬워하는 의견도 많더군요. 토르 3부작을 통해서 완벽한 리더로 거듭난 토르가 다시 퇴보한 것에 대한 아쉬움도 있고... 생각해보면 인피니티 워 때 토르는 인피니티 스톤 6개를 다 모은 타노스와 맞짱떠서 죽이기 직전까지 갔으니, 너프시키지 않았더라면 기본적인 밸런스도 안맞았을 거라 생각이 들긴 합니다. 그리고 토르가 아스가르디언 오브 갤럭시에 합류한 것으로 보아 토르의 개인 서사도 더 진행되어야 하니까요. 이미 완벽해졌는데 다시 이야기를 쓰는 것보다 퇴보시켜놓는게 이후 이야기를 쓰는게 훨씬 편할테니... 강력했던 토르의 모습을 보지 못한 아쉬움보다 차기작에서 토르의 모습을 볼 수 있다는 반가움이 개인적으로 앞서는 것 같네요. 실현 가능성은 적지만 과거 로키도 테서렉트를 들고 튀었고, 제인 포스터도 다시 등장했으니 기왕이면 토르 4를 기대해 봅니다. 10. 그럼에도 불구하고 그래도 이 모든걸 염두해도고 이 영화는 좋은 영화였다고 결론지을 수 있는게 엔드게임의 특징이 아닐지. 전작을 전부 챙겨봤던 MCU 팬들에게는 크게 부족함이 없었고, 메인 히어로들의 마무리는 깔끔하게 매듭지으면서도 감동적이게 연출한 영화라는 생각이 2번째 영화를 보고 나오던 와중에 떠올랐습니다. 모든 장면을 알고 있어도 몇몇 장면에서는 또 소름이 돋더군요. 5, 7은 영화적 허용이라고 해주고싶은 마음이고
1, 6, 8, 9는 그런대로 납득은 됩니다
근데 2, 3, 4는 좀 그랬어요. 특히 2는 영화가 인피니티워보다 30분 더 긴데 이렇게밖에 못하나 싶었고...
차라리 인피니티워가 이 영화에서 30분을 떼서 가져갔으면 윈윈이 아니었을까 하는게 제 생각압니다.
이정도면 선방으로 마무리한건 맞지만 영화로서는 인피니티워가 훨씬 나았다고 생각합니다. 2시간 30분에 우겨넣는 영화공학이란게 있어서 그걸 배우고왔나 싶은 전개배분과 분량배분을 생각하면...
그래도 시리즈를 조져무쳐먹... 더 보기
