 스트라다 비앙케(직역하면 '흰 길')는 이탈리아의 토스카나 지방에서 열리는 원데이 클래식 대회입니다. 2007년부터 개최된 대회라 다른 원데이 대회에 비하면 아직 걸음마 수준의 역사죠. 하지만 엄청난 인기를 타고 순식간에 5대 모뉴먼트의 아성을 위협하는 대회로 자리잡았습니다. 인기도 그렇고, 5대 모뉴먼트에 들기 위해서 반드시 필요한 '변별력 높은 구간', '이 코스만의 특징' 등을 전부 갖춘 대회입니다. 위 사진은 이 대회 명칭이 왜 '흰 길'인지를 보여주면서, 이 코스의 특징을 잘 담고 있는 사진입니다. 이 동네의 그래블 코스들을 두루두루 지나가죠. 이 그래블이 흰 색이라 저런 명칭이 붙었습니다. 토스카나 특유의 끝없는 구릉지대와 그래블 코스가 합쳐져서, 선수들에게 끊임없는 체력과 파워를 요구하는 코스로, 경기 내내 고도의 집중력을 요구합니다. 코블처럼 코스 자체가 엄청나게 거칠진 않지만 경기 내내 자욱한 흙먼지로 상당히 고생하며, 펑크도 꽤나 나옵니다. 경기 극후반부 체력이 다 떨어질때쯤 나오는 그래블+ 15% 이상의 경사구간 3연타는 가장 강한 선수를 가려내는 게이트 역할을 합니다. 사진작가들의 고화질 사진과 제가 전체 중계에서 캡쳐한 이미지(Tiz Cycling이 올려놓는 화질 열화버전 전체중계)를 혼용할 텐데, 화질 차이가 많이 나는 점 양해바랍니다... 다른 사람들과는 달리 공식 계정 하이라이트만으로는 전 리뷰 못하겠어요. 유로스포츠나 inCycle 애들이나 솔직하게 이야기해서 사이클 저보다 훨씬 잘 아는 사람들 천지일텐데 어떻게 저따구로밖에 못 만드는지..  시에나에서 출발하여 토스카나 일대를 쭉 돌고, 시에나 시내로 들어와서 내성의 좁은 업힐을 넘어 광장에서 피니시하는 구조입니다. 184km로 원데이 클래식 중에선 짧습니다만, 정말로 정복하기 힘든 대회입니다.  중계는 50km 좀 앞부터 1시간 반정도 틀어주더군요. 이 정도 대회면 더 일찍 틀어줄 법도 한데, 유로스포츠는 이 경기 앞에 여자 알파인스키 챔프 결승을 편성했더군요. 잠깐 봤는데 앞의 선수들 아등바등하더니 2등이 거의 1초차이로 압도해버리고 그 2등을 1초차이로 발라먹는 쉬프린의 클래스... 각설하고 현재 팀 스카이의 디에고 로자가 단독 BA로 남아있네요. 이런 고된 코스에선 혼자 BA라면 오래 버티기 정말 힘든데 잘 달리고 있습니다.  뒤를 맹렬히 쫓고 있는 펠로톤입니다. 중간에 BA나 카운터어택 같은 것들은 막 다 흡수한 상태입니다.    본격적인 경기 리뷰에 앞선 토스카나의 풍경 리뷰... 되겠습니다. 정말 특유의 구릉, 그 사이로 뻗어있는 그래블(고운 모래+흙) 로드, 사방팔방이 밭과 과수원(토스카나는 알아주는 와인 생산지 중 하나죠)... 제가 이탈리아의 대회들을 특히 좋아하는 이유가 여기에 있습니다.  이런 가혹한 환경에서는 선수들도 낙차, 펑쳐로 엄청 고생합니다. 경기 후반부에는 속도가 죽죽 올라갈 때라 펠로톤이 기다려주지도 않습니다. 투어 경기면 동료들이 도와줄 수라도 있지 이런 경기에선 도와준다고 합류할 수 있는게 아닙니다. 팀 썬웹의 이번 대회 리더(팀에서 뒷자리에 1번 달고 있는 선수가 그 대회 리더죠) 니콜라스 로체가 하필 이 시점에서 펑쳐가 났군요. 아쉽지만 이번 대회 입상은 이걸로 날아갑니다. 원데이는 운도 따라줘야 합니다.  잠시 로체에게 카메라가 돌아간 사이 펠로톤에서 강력한 선수들이 단체로 튀어나와 펠로톤을 깨버립니다. 원데이 클래식 후반부에서 이런 움직임은 굉장히 중요합니다. 제가 원데이 클래식 경기를 이야기하면서 "원데이는 용자가 승리한다"라는 말을 항상 하는데, 경기 후반부로 갈수록 강력한 사람들만이 더욱 속도를 올려서 이렇게 펠로톤을 깨버리고 튀어나올 수 있고, 여기에 따라가지 못하면 '그 뒤'라는게 놀랍게도 없습니다. 기회를 봐서 나중에 어떻게 해야지...이런게 없는 겁니다. 이 시점에서 사실상 화면의 2그룹에 따라가지 못한 선수들은 우승확률이 심하게 희박해졌습니다.  급하게 남은 펠로톤에서도 이번 대회 우승을 노리는 선수들이 튀어나와 3그룹을 형성해서 어떻게든 추격의 불씨를 살려봅니다. 여기에는 GC라이더지만 클래식에서도 강한 모습을 보이는 빈첸조 니발리, 게런트 토마스 등도 포함되어 있기 때문에, 2그룹에 우승후보를 보낸 팀들은 이 그룹에 어떻게든 자 팀 선수들을 집어넣어 이들의 조직적인 추격을 방해하려 들 겁니다. 이래서 원데이는 한번 뒤쳐지면 추격이 어렵습니다.    현 2그룹 선수들의 명단이 주르륵 나옵니다. 작년 비앙케 우승자인 베눗과 동료선수 팀 벨렌스, 요즘 극강의 컨디션을 보여주고 있는 아스타나의 루첸코와 리더인 푸글상, 언제나 클래식 대회 우승후보인 GVA, 현재 클래식 최강팀인 퀵스텝의 울프팩(3명), CX에서 로드로 전향한 첫해인 작년에 바로 이 대회 3위를 했던 윰보의 반 아트 등이 우승후보로 꼽힙니다. 한마디로 최정예 그룹이라는 거죠.  위 짤에도 이름이 나와있던 2그룹의 베티올이 그래블 코스에서 낙차로 나가리됩니다. 안타깝네요.  어어 하는 사이에 2그룹은 3그룹과 30초 차이, 구불구불한 코스에서 코너 2개의 거리차이를 내버립니다. 사이클은 지루해 보이다가도 앗 하는 사이에 이렇게 치명적인 차이가 나버립니다. 클래식에서 이 차이는 좀처럼 좁히기 힘듭니다.  3그룹은 설상가상으로 강력한 선수를 잃어버립니다. 팀 스카이의 작년 TDF 우승자 게런트 토마스가 펑쳐로 뒤쳐집니다. 즉시 조치를 했다지만 쫓아가는 데 엄청난 힘을 허비해야겠죠.  디에고 로자는 피니시까지 40km를 남겨둔 지점에서 페이스가 극도로 저하되더니 금방 2그룹에 흡수됩니다. 그래도 생각보다 굉장히 오래 버틴 겁니다. 사실 25km까지 BA로 남았으면 정말 꿀잼이었을텐데...   유로스포츠의 장기인 헬기 뷰 전환입니다. 치열한 경기 중계중에도 언제나 한눈을 팔 준비가 되어있죠ㅋㅋ 정말 끝도 없이 각 유럽 마을들의 정보를 쏟아내고, 선출 해설자들은 저기에 '나 저 지역에서 뭐 먹었는데 맛있더라' 이런 드립도 치고 뭐 그렇습니다. 유로스포츠 시청료의 5할은 아마 저런 데 들어가지 않을까 싶... 정말 고퀄이긴 합니다.  3그룹에서 보다 못한 슈쳐만과 쿠즈네초프가 탈출을 시도합니다. 3그룹에선 이 둘을 놔줍니다(팀이 약해서). 이들은 어떻게든 최후 격전지에 도달하기 전에 2그룹을 따라잡고 숨 돌릴 시간을 확보해야 하는, 굉장히 어려운 미션을 해내야 합니다.   이 둘은 거의 7~8km를 풀 가스로 달려서, 결국은 2그룹을 따라잡는데는 성공합니다. 허나...  9번 그래블 섹터입니다. 이 섹터를 설명해주는 자막이 나오는 짤 하나를 캡쳐못했군요. 800m로 길이는 길지 않지만, 모두에서 말한 그래블+업힐 3연타의 첫번째입니다. 이 섹터 전후로 어택이 난무하는 곳이고, 수많은 우승자들을 가려낸 곳이기도 합니다. 슈처만과 쿠즈네초프는 따라잡는 게 너무 늦었네요.    카메라 앵글이 1그룹을 다 잡아주기 바쁘게 어택이 시작됩니다. 먼저 치고나가는 아스타나(하늘색)의 야콥 푸글상, 즉시 붙어서 업힐을 타고 도망가는 윰보-비스마의 와웃 반 아트(노란색), 그리고 마지막에 죽자살자 치고나가서 이 대열에 합류하는 데커닝크-퀵스텝의 줄리앙 알랑필립(파란색). 셋 다 강력한 우승후보들입니다. 결과적으로 이 어택이 이날의 승부를 가르는 가장 중요한 움직임이 되었습니다.  이 셋은 죽어라 뒷그룹에서 도망치기 시작합니다. 아트는 혼자지만 아스타나와 퀵스텝은 후위그룹에 선수가 남아있기 때문에, 뒷그룹의 모든 어택을 흡수할 여력이 있습니다. 개인적으로는 로토 수달이 상당히 아쉬운데, 작년 우승자인 베눗이 지난 주 경기에서의 낙차로 정상 컨디션이 아니었다면, 적어도 벨렌스라도 이 세명에 합류시켜야 하지 않았을까 싶습니다. 벨렌스가 최정상권과 거리가 살짝 있는 선수긴 합니다만 움룹에서 3위한 거 보면 그렇게 약한 선수도 아니거든요. 적어도 확률이 0.1인 것과 0인 것과는 천지차이죠. 결과적으로 베눗이 5위한 거 보면 그냥 전략 미스입니다. 본인도 팀도 아차 싶었을듯..  오늘 본인의 임무를 다한 디에고 로자는 결국 지쳐서 장렬히 산화합니다. 앞은 슈처만인데 오르막에서 처지는거 보면 역시 선두그룹 쫓는데 힘을 다 써서 엥꼬가 난 듯하네요.  4km도 안 갔는데 25초 가까이 차이를 내버립니다. 이 시간대에서의 25초는 정말 큰 시간차이입니다. 2-3그룹 찢어질 때도 설명드렸습니다만 이렇게 격차 나면 아예 따라잡질 못합니다. 3그룹은 중계에도 안 잡힌지 좀 됐죠.  10번 그래블섹터입니다. 자막에도 나와있듯이 최대 15%의 경사도의 업힐을 포함한 구간입니다. 몸무게가 좀 나가는 반 아트가 불리할 거 같습니다. 푸글상이야 1주일짜리 투어 리더도 할 정도로 산을 잘 타고(도피네 우승 경력도 있습니다), 알랑필립은 TDF 산악왕, 아르덴 클래식 우승 등 화려합니다. 폭발력으로는 푸글상보다도 위에 있는 선수죠. 푸글상도 장기전으로 가면 불리합니다.  역시나 업힐에서 반 아트가 퍼지고 이제 푸글상과 알랑필립의 1:1이 됩니다.   선두 둘과 이들을 홀로 추격하는 반 아트. 앗 하는 사이에 25초 차이가 나버립니다. 아트도 사실상 포디엄 마지막 자리를 노려야 할 처지가 됐네요. 작년에도 결국 베눗을 못 잡아서 3위로 마감했는데ㅠ  마지막 그래블 섹터에 진입하는 푸글상과 알랑필립. 반 아트와는 약 30초 차이, 추격그룹과는 이제 1분 30초까지 차이가 나버립니다. 3그룹은 아예 지워졌죠. 찰나의 선택이 여기까지 스노우볼을 굴립니다.  그래블과 토스카나의 끝없는 구릉, 구불부불한 시골길을 지나치는데도 평균 속도가 38.6km/h... 프로사이클 선수들은 인간이 아닙니다.  마지막 그래블 코스까지 왔는데도 서로 힘이 넘칩니다. 서로가 서로를 누를 정도의 힘은 없으니 협력해서 그냥 달려나갑니다.  추격그룹이 카메라에 잡힌 마지막 모습입니다. 거의 전의를 상실한 상태죠. 이래서 원데이는 치고나갈 수 있을 때 무조건 나가야 합니다. 그렇지 못한 자들은 이렇게 솎여지는 거죠. 이러한 변별요소를 다수 가지고 있는 코스들이 바로 5대 모뉴먼트고, 그래서 용자가 항상 승리하는 것입니다.  시에나 시내로 진입하는 둘. 저 위에 보이는 곳까지 올라가야 합니다.  누가 봐도 1:1 승부로 끝날 상황. 서로 엄살을 부립니다. 힘든 척하는거죠. 난 힘들어 죽겠으니 니가 끌어라. 아니면 여기에서 상대의 어택을 유도해서 힘을 미리 빼버리는 거죠. 알랑필립은 자꾸 어디가 아프다고 엄살을 피우고, 이에 질세라 푸글상은 피 빨때 대놓고 서서 휴식을 취합니다. 그러는 사이 잠시 속도가 죽습니다.  ...반 아트는 포기하지 않고 죽어라 쫓아온 끝에, 피니시 1.2km를 남기고 이 둘에 주차하는 데 성공합니다. 괴력의 반 아트. 정말 소름돋는 순간입니다.  여기가 시에나 시내 광장으로 올라가는 마지막 업힐입니다. 왼쪽 코너로 꺾으면 돌로 포장된 좁은 길이 나오고, 엄청난 갤러리가 보는 가운데 진짜 마지막 승부처가 나옵니다.  사실 반 아트의 추격을 허용한 데는 이유가 있습니다. 전술했다시피 반 아트는 셋 중에 가장 산을 못 탑니다. 장애물이 가득한 사이클로크로스 출신이라 파워가 많이 필요해서 몸이 좀 무겁죠. 거친 지형에서 탈출능력은 발군이지만, 폭발적인 업힐스피드는 없습니다. 사실 이 시점까지 왔으면 사실상 승부는 알랑필립으로 결정난 상태입니다. 푸글상이 좀 더 앞에서 적극적으로 어택을 쳤으면 모르겠습니다만, 여기까지 따라붙고도 힘이 남은 걸 보면 설령 그랬다 하더라도 금방 따라붙고 푸글상 힘만 빠졌을 거 같습니다. 그냥 알랑필립이 너무 강한 탓으로 봐야...   업힐의 가장 끝까지 왔는데도 알랑필립이 다 따라붙어 버리고, 스프린트 능력도 있는 알랑필립이 평지로 오자마자 남은 힘으로 간단하게 푸글상을 제쳐버립니다.  엄청난 갤러리들의 환호를 받으며 피니시라인으로 가는 내리막길을 질주하는 줄리앙 알랑필립. 90년생 프랑스 선수입니다.  알랑필립은 작년 아르덴 클래식 중 La Fleche Wallonne의 우승에 이어 또 한번 클래식 대회에서 귀중한 승리를 가져갑니다.  데커닝크-퀵스텝은 지금까지 열린 봄철 클래식 대회 4개를 모조리 휩쓸어가는 괴력을 선보입니다. 더 경악스러운 것은, 네 대회 다 우승자가 다르다는 점입니다. 퀵스텝의 'Wolfpack'이 얼마나 강한지 다시금 체감하게 합니다. 심지어 이것도 작년에 슈처만, 니키 테릅스트라 등이 빠졌는데도 이렇습니다. 누가 나가든 퀵스텝은 항상 유망주를 잘 채워넣고, 이들은 어느 대회에서나 2~3명씩 최선두에 집어넣을 수 있는 능력을 키우고, 이러한 수적 우위를 바탕으로 일관된 움직임을 보입니다. 이 울프팩 전술에 수십 년 째 수많은 팀들이 나가떨어져 왔고, 올해도 80%의 클래식 대회를 이 전술로 휩쓸고 있습니다. 앞으로도 그럴 거구요.  아쉽게 2위를 한 푸글상. 하지만 알랑필립이 너무 강했던 거지, 푸글상이 약해서는 아닙니다. 오늘 경기를 결정지은 것은 푸글상의 어택이었죠. 애초에 투어 리더가 클래식에 와서 포디엄에 서는 거 자체가 대단한 일인 겁니다.  2년 연속 3위를 기록한 와웃 반 아트. 아직 윰보의
