이젠 거의 수명이 다했다고들 합니다만 사실 컴까기할 때 갖가지 변수가 창출될 잠재력이 있는 것도 RTS거든요. 그리고 스타크래프트나 워크래프트에 익숙한 플레이어들은 또 그 나름대로의 보는 재미를 찾죠. 오늘은 워크래프트 3에서 말하는 운영이란 것에 대해 논해보고자 합니다. 예시는 워크래프트가 되겠지만 다른 RTS에도 충분히 적용할 수 있을 것이라 봅니다. 저는 워크래프트3를 자주 봅니다. 올해 있었던 AWL 시즌1/2, 로라이엇배 저세상매치 등을 봤죠. 특히 저세상매치는 요즘 밥먹으며 보고 심심하면 보고 자기 전에 보고 등등 하여간 계속해서 반복적으로 틀어놓을 정도로 재미있게 보고 있습니다. 이 저세상매치를 보다가 금일 이야기할 주제가 떠올랐는데요... 로라이엇 선수가 해설하는 걸 가만히 들어보면, '운영'이라는 단어를 대략적으로 이런 용도로 언급합니다. 넉 자로 줄이면 빈집털이. 좀더 상세하게 풀면, 정면 대응이 어렵거나 시간이 필요하거나 힘싸움 자체를 좋아하지 않는 경우 상대 병력이 없는 틈을 타서 찌르는 것 등으로, 즉 상대 병력이 없는 상대에서 본진을 쳐서 이득을 보려고 하는 상황을 운영이라고 줄여서 해설하시더군요. 틀린 말은 아닙니다. 아니 언어의 사회성 등을 고려해 보면, 운영이라는 단어가 이런 용도로 '변질되는' 것 자체가 이상할 게 없죠. 제가 이야기하고 싶은 것은, 이 운영이라는 것을 다소 군사적인 측면에서 바라보았을 때의 이야기입니다. 즉 군사적으로는 무엇을 운영이라 하느냐, 운영의 미덕은 무엇이냐, 운영이 가지고 가야 할 최종 결과는 무엇이냐 하는 것입니다. 솔직히 말씀드리면, 결과는 당연한 이야기일 것입니다. "이걸 이야기하자고 이렇게 글을 길게 썼느냐?"라는 질문을 하실 정도가 될 정도로 결론은 매우 당연한 것입니다. 그렇지만 제가 정말로 이야기하고 싶은 것은 해당 결론이 도출되기까지의 군사적 개념 및 그 과정 정도가 되겠습니다. 우선 군사적인 용어 사용에 익숙하지 않으신 분들을 위해서 잠시 용어를 정리하겠습니다. 전략 / 전술 / 작전(술)에 관한 것입니다. 전술은 유닛 단계에서의 개별적인 움직임이라고 보시면 됩니다. 가장 스케일이 작습니다. 오크를 예로 들면, 레이더가 인스네어로 적 영웅을 묶고, 쭐래쭐래 따라오던 섀도우 헌터가 헥스를 건 다음, 블마가 칼질을 하니까 크리가 뜨면서 데스 나이트가 알타로 돌아가버립니다. 이러한, 교전에서 승리하기 위한 일련의 움직임을 전술이라고 보시면 됩니다. 작전술은 전술보다 약간 더 고차원적인 개념입니다. 약간 어려운 이야기인데, 대략적으로 줄이면 전술의 결과로 뭔가를 얻어내고 그 이후를 준비하고자 하는 구상 정도의 레벨이면 작전술이라고 보시면 될 것 같습니다. 전략은 작전술보다 더욱 스케일이 큽니다. 아예 전 전선에서의 상황을 고려하기 때문에, 정치 / 경제 / 문화 / 사회 등등 갖가지 모든 요소들이 총망라된 레벨로 이해하시면 되겠네요. 예시를 들어 설명드리겠습니다. 스탈린그라드 전투가 유명하니 그것으로 설명드리죠. 스탈린그라드 전투에서 소련군이 독일군을 몰아내기 위해 기획하고 실행하여 성공시킨 것은 천왕성 "작전"(Operation)이었습니다. 천왕성 "전술" 내지는 천왕성 "전략"이 아니라요. 이 작전을 위해 동원된 야전군만 몇 개에 달하고(참고로 우리 나라의 야전군은 딱 3개 있습니다), 각각의 군 및 예하 군단에는 목표가 하달이 되었습니다. 바실리 추이코프의 제64군은 스탈린그라드에서 최대한 뻐길 것, 제5전차군과 제21군은 독일의 좌익인 루마니아군을 박살내고 칼라치 교량을 점거할 것, 제57군은 볼가 강을 건너 독일의 우익을 공격하여 역시 칼라치 교량을 점거하고 스탈린그라드의 독일군 제6군을 포위할 것. 뭐 이런 식이죠. 분명히 전투원 내지는 부대 단위로서의 계획은 아닙니다. 예를 들어 빠른 교량 설치를 위해 다리를 미리 조립해서 들고 간다던가, 전차부대가 움직이는 동안에는 쐐기 대형으로 움직인다던가, 적을 만나면 보병부대가 최대한 발목을 잡는 사이에 전차부대는 드라이브를 크게 꺾어서 우회하여 적의 후방을 친다던가... 이런 레벨은 죄다 전술적인 영역으로 들어갑니다. 작전을 기획할 때 이런 것까지 기획하지는 않습니다. 하지만 작전의 결과로 노리는 것은 제6군의 포위 및 섬멸이죠. 여기에는 이 섬멸을 바탕으로 한 다음 계획 구상이라던가, 혹은 여기에 소모될 병력을 바탕으로 한 다른 전선에서의 공세 및 수비계획이라던가 하는 내용은 없습니다. 물론 그런 걸 생각 안 했을 리는 없겠습니다만 천왕성 "작전"이라 이름이 붙은 이 범주에서는 오직 스탈린그라드 일대만 생각했지 다른 전선에서의 내용은 담지 않았다는 이야기죠. 다른 전선에서의 계획이나 병력 보충 방안 등까지 고려한 레벨은 명백히 천왕성 작전보다 상위 개념입니다. 그래서 천왕성 "전략"이 아니라 천왕성 "작전"인 것이죠. 다시 게임으로 돌아와서 이야기해보겠습니다. 교전에서의 컨트롤이나, 병력 운용의 계획이나, 노리는 적에 대한 구상 등은 모두 전술적인 레벨입니다. 블마가 칼질 시작하면 크리가 뜰 거임. 그거 확률인데요? 아무튼 뜰 거임. 하면서 냅다 데나만 노리건, 데나 니는 어차피 마나도 없고 마침 옵시도 없으니 니는 그냥 응원이나 하며 놀고 있으라고 하고 옆에 있는 리치나 밴시 혹은 어보미를 먼저 때리건, 이런 레벨의 이야기는 모두 전술적인 레벨에서의 이야기라는 거죠. 작전에서의 레벨은 이보다 상위 개념입니다. 그런데, 묘하게도 RTS 게임에서는 작전과 전략의 경계선이 불분명합니다. 왜냐하면 작전을 수립하기 위해서 필연적으로 전략적인 개념이 들어가게 되기 때문이죠. 영문 위키백과에 따르면(Operational level of war 문서) 작전을 구상하기 위해서는 4가지의 요소가 필요합니다. 시간, 공간, 방법, 목적이 그것이죠. 다른 건 별 문제가 안 되는데 문제가 되는 요소가 바로 방법입니다. RTS에서의 방법이 뭡니까? 주어진 병력을 활용하는 게 아니라 병력을 자신의 입맛대로 구성하고 활용하는 게 RTS 아닙니까? 이러려면 주어진 자원이 무한대가 아닌 이상 당연히 주어진 자원을 어떻게 배분하여 원하는 결과를 얻어갈 것인가에 대한 고민이 필요한데, 정치적인 요소가 거의 없는 1대1 RTS의 경우 경제적인 측면이 곧 전략입니다. 바로 이 시점에서 RTS 게임에서의 작전과 전략의 경계는 모호해집니다. 그래도 굳이, 굳ㅡ이 RTS에서 작전과 전략을 구분짓자면... 이렇게 해 봅시다. 전략에 반드시 들어가야 하는 요소는 "상황 분석, 방향 설정, 실행 계획"입니다(영문 위키백과 Strategy 문서). 여기에서 실행 계획을 밑으로 내리고(혹은 여러 개의 작전 레벨에서의 방법을 묶어서 실행 계획으로 뭉뚱그리고), 상황 분석과 방향 설정, 요게 들어가면 전략. 빠져 있으면 작전. 이렇게 구분지어 보도록 하죠. 자, 전술 / 작전 / 전략에 대한 용어 정의는 이 정도로 해 봅시다. 이제 운영에 대해 이야기해 보도록 하죠. 짐작하셨겠지만 운영이라는 용어는 이쯤되면 굉장히 모호한 용어가 됩니다. 그거를 좀 명확히 해 봅시다. 운영이라고 뭉뚱그려서 일컬어지는 용어에는 우선 시간, 공간의 개념이 들어갑니다. 해설에서 말하는 "운영"이라는 개념에서, 시간은 바로 지금 내지는 적이 사냥 등을 나간 타이밍. 공간은 적의 본진이 되겠죠. 그리고 여기에서 첫 번째 운영의 미덕이 등장합니다. 운영을 할 때는, 반드시 그 운영의 목적이 명확해야 합니다. 그것이 멀티를 하기 위함이건, 병력의 추가 생산을 위함이건, 혹은 멀티를 하기 위한 병력 생산을 위함이건. 운영이라고 하는 것은 기본적으로 시간 벌기 내지는 적의 부재 상황에서의 이득 가져가기입니다. 그 목적이 빠지면 그 순간은 그저 헛마우스 클릭질 몇 번에 불과할 뿐입니다. 따라서 운영을 하는 사람은 반드시 그 목적을 명확하게 해야 승리에 한 발짝 더 다가갈 수 있습니다. 목적이 없는 운영은 운영이 아닙니다. 그러면 마지막으로 남은 것은 방법인데, 여기에는 시간 / 공간 / 병력적인 개념이 모두 들어가 있습니다. 대표적인 상황은 적이 없는 순간 / 적 본진에서 / 주력 유닛은 레이더 소수와 블마. 혹은 인비지 모탈 팀. 아니면 6렙 찍고 메텔 배운 아메를 위시한 휴먼 전체. 뭐 이런 식으로의 병력 구성까지가 방법이 되겠죠. 따라서 게임에서 말하는 운영이라고 하는 것은, 다분히 작전적인 개념이 강합니다. 이런 작전끼리의 대치상황을 가리켜서 흔히들 가리켜서 운영 싸움이라 하죠. 서로가 서로의 빈집을 털어대거나 교전을 피하고 게릴라전을 벌이면서 이득을 가져가려는 것. 휴먼이 오크 본진으로 아메가 쏙 들어가서 워젤을 소환하여 신나게 버로우 테러를 하고 본진을 봤더니만 본진은 블마의 게릴라로 피전트가 죄다 시체로 변해 있더라- 이런 게 작전과 작전의 맞부딪힘입니다. 상대가 패턴화된 컴퓨터가 아닌 이상 이런 과정에서는 필연적으로 작전의 틀어짐 내지는 수정을 강요받게 됩니다. 여기에서 한 가지 알아두셔야 할 것은, 이러한 작전끼리의 맞부딪힘으로 인한 작전의 틀어짐은 필연적으로 전략 레벨에서의 수정을 강요합니다. 그렇다면 게임에서의 전략은 무엇인가? 우선 이것에 대해 명확히 알아두어야 하나의 작전이 갖는 의미, 그리고 하나의 작전을 세울 때의 주의사항을 논해볼 수 있을 것 같네요. 앞서서 전략이 갖는 요소는 이렇게 이야기했습니다. 상황 분석, 방향 설정, 실행 계획. 방향 설정은 아주 간단합니다. 이긴다! 아 물론 이 방향 설정을 "내가 이기는 건 상관없고 최대한 상대를 엿먹여보겠다"는 방향으로 설정하는 게이머들도 있습니다만(이를 가리켜 트롤이라 하죠), 일반적인 프로게이머라면 게임을 이긴다는 것이 아젠다가 됩니다. 그렇게 하기 위해서, 즉 이기기 위해서 게이머는 상황을 분석합니다. 대진표를 봤더니 상대가 오크여. 나는 휴먼인데. 그리고 맵이 에코 아일이야. 요즘 블마가 사기야(신준 땜시 너프 많이 먹었다고 들었는데 옛날 한창 야언 소리 듣던 시절 떠올려 봅시다). 함부로 멀티를 했다가는 일꾼이고 뭐고 다 썰릴 것 같고 설령 멀티를 하더라도 원멀티가 끝이라서 성과가 안 나올 것 같아. 그러면 멀티를 하지 말고 초반에 끝내자. 그러려면 역시 타워링이지. 근데 누구를 데리고 가지? 이런 상황에서는 소환수가 있는 애들이 괜찮은데. 파이어로드로 라바 스폰 불려가며 초반에 아예 압도해버리자. 좋아. 결정. 이제 왜 "벙커링도 전략이다"라고 하는지 이해가 가시는지요? 그런데 막상 게임에 들어갔는데... 오크가 선 파 시어네요? 아니 아예 오크가 알타조차 안 올리고 배럭부터 올리고 하는 게 낌새가 어째 파이어로드 타이밍을 예상하고 드물게 중립영웅 빌드를 준비해 온 것 같네요? (물론 오크가 중립영웅을 쓸 가능성은 거의 없습니다만 아무튼 그렇다 칩시다.) 바로 이런 순간 휴먼 게이머는 난감합니다. 자기 구상이 틀어져버렸거든요. 이런 식으로 구상이 틀어진 순간에 게이머는 (비록 절대 긴 시간이 허락되지는 않지만) 다시 이기기 위한 계획을 짜야 합니다. 여기에서 반드시 기억하셔야 할 말이 있어요. 작전 수행이 불가능한 전략은 세우는 의미가 없고, 전술적으로 실행이 불가능한 것을 작전으로 짜면 안 된다. 그리고 이건 운영에서도 마찬가지로 유효하게 적용됩니다. 앞에서도 말씀드렸습니다만 운영 역시 다분히 작전적인 레벨이기 때문입니다. 따라서 여기에서 운영의 두 번째 미덕이 세워집니다. 실행 가능한 계획을 짜라. 이거 생각보다 무진장 어렵습니다. 무리해서 멀티를 먹으려고 한다던가, 오버크리핑을 시도한다던가, 적이 감시 와드를 먹은 것을 알면서도 안 덮칠 것이라 믿으면서 그 근방에서 사냥을 한다던가 했다가 게임 말아먹는 꼴 한두 번 보셨습니까. 작전은 필연적으로 틀어집니다. 원하는 대로 모든 것이 완벽하게 딱딱 맞아떨어져 들어가는 게임은 소위 말하는 원사이드 게임이죠. 그런 압도적인 실력 격차를 전제로 하지 않은 일반적인 게임의 경우에서는 99% 이상 원하는 대로 흘러가지 않는 상황이 반드시 발생합니다. 바로 그런 상황에서 운영의 묘를 발휘하고자 할 때 기억하셔야 할 내용이죠. 그리고 여기에서 한 가지 생각해보실 내용이 있습니다. 소위 말하는 안티-전략인데요... 사실 안티-전략이라기보다는 안티-작전이라 해야 좀더 어울리겠네요. 말하고자 하는 초점은 이것입니다. 바로 상대방이 준비해 온, 혹은 지금 현재 상대방이 떠올린 구상을 역으로 카운터치는 것이죠. 하늘 아래 두 개의 태양이 있을 수 없듯이 1대1 게임에서 무승부는 있을지언정 두 명의 승자는 있을 수 없습니다. 그것이 트롤링이나 져주기 게임 등 의도한 것이 아니라면, 패자는 반드시 어딘가 자신의 계획이 틀어진 것입니다. 승리를 위한 자신의 구상이 어딘가 어긋나 있었다는 것입니다. 이런 케이스는 크게 두 가지 케이스로 나눠볼 수 있습니다. 첫째로 자기가 짠 계획 자체가 엉터리였을 경우. 예를 들면 오크 유저의 경우 무조건 크리티컬 스트라이크가 뜨는 것만 노리고 병력을 운용하는 것은 바보짓입니다. 물론 한 수백 수천 수억 게임쯤 하면 그런 판이 한 판쯤은 나오겠지만 냉정하게 생각해 보면 그걸 바탕으로 계획을 짜면 안 되죠. 그러니까 예컨대 이런 구상입니다. 트메에서 블마 뽑아서 일단 첫 스킬 크리를 찍고(윈웍이 아닙니다!), 크리가 뜰 것을 기대하면서 각 스타팅 포인트의 사냥터에 있는 6렙 몹을 잡으면 레벨도 레벨이고 거기서 나오는 템이 모두 9클러 내지는 쿠엘탈라스일 테니까(주는지 안 주는지 모르겠는데 일단 준다고 칩시다) 성검블마로 상대 병력을 다 때려잡으며 GG를 받아낸다... 누가 이걸 가리켜서 제대로 된 전략이라 합니까? 이런 식으로 "셀프 카운터"가 일어나는 경우가 종종 있는데, 그게 아니라면 백 프로 상대방에게 카운터를 당한 겁니다. 예를 들어 이런 거죠. 원버로우 홀업을 했는데 아메가 찌르고 들어왔어요. 심시티 및 그런트로 막아보려고 했고 실제로 연습에서도 거진 잘 막았는데 상대방이 심시티한 틈에 최대한 딱 달라붙더니 어거지로 워젤을 소환해 들이밀어서 결국 본진 안으로 워젤이 난입했고 버로우가 취소당했습니다. 그래서 버로우 가격 아낀 자원으로 빠르게 테크를 올리려고 했는데 그 구상이 깨지고 테크가 올라가는 게 늦어졌죠. 이런 게 두 번째 케이스. 이제 승자 입장에서 생각해 봅시다. 승자의 비결은 간단합니다. 바로 상대방의 구상이 실현되지 않도록 하면 되는 것입니다. 상대방이 구상을 잘못해도 한참 잘못해서 실행 불가능한 전략을 들고 왔고 덕분에 어부지리로 승리를 가져가는 경우도 있습니다만 그런 케이스는 솔직히 매우 드물고 결국 대부분은 상대방의 구상을 막아버리면서 승리를 가져가게 됩니다. 바로 여기에서 관점의 차이가 발생하게 됩니다. 구상을 함에 있어서 자신의 구상을 우선할 것이냐, 아니면 상대의 구상을 무너뜨리는 것에 초점을 맞출 것이냐. 역사적으로 아주 좋은 예가 있습니다. 바로 제2차 세계대전에서의 이야기인데요, 독일군은 언제나 자신의 구상을 중요하게 여겼습니다. 바르바로사 작전 등에서는 대놓고 소련군을 무시했을 정도로 상대방의 의도나 배치, 규모 등은 싹 무시했고(물론 이는 비수가 되어 독일군에게 되돌아옵니다), 오로지 자신들이 생각한 대로 계획을 밀고나가는 방식을 택했죠. 반면에 소련군은 독일군의 구상을 깨부수는 것에 초점을 두었습니다. 그런데 이건 양날의 검입니다. 자기가 예상한 게 들어맞으면 이보다 더 완벽한 카운터가 없지만, 만에 하나 구상이 틀리기라도 한다면... 그리고 그것이 두 번이나 실제로 일어났던 것이 바르바로사 작전과 청색 작전입니다. 뭐 두 작전 모두 독일군 스스로 말도 안 되는 계획을 짜서 "셀프 카운터"를 해 준 덕에 최종적으로는 소련군이 버틸 수 있었습니다만. 그리고 독일군의 작전을 완벽하게 예측하고 감청하면서 기록적인 대승을 거둔 것이 바로 1943년의 쿠르스크 전역. 이걸 아주 잘 표현한 게 굽시니스트의 본격 제2차 세계대전 만화인데, 2권에서 대놓고 스탈린이 고스트 바둑왕 코스프레하며 이래 말하지 않습니까? "이번에는 쿠르스크다! 아니면 진짜 이 짓 접는다!" 뭐 이런 거죠. 그리고 누차 말씀드리지만 전략이 바뀌지는 않을 수 있어도 대부분의 게임에서는 수시로 작전은 변하게 됩니다. 따라서 그때그때 상황에 맞추어서 작전을 수립하는 것이 일반적입니다. 이것이 소위 말하는 "게이머로서의 판단력"입니다. 이 작전의 수립능력이 바로 "머리 좋은 게이머, 판짜기에 능한 게이머"를 가르는 기준이 됩니다. 어디가 강하고 어디가 약하며 이런 상황에서는 무엇을 노려야 하고 그렇게 하기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 하고. 이 모든 것을 생각하며 정답을 도출하는 데 단 몇 분, 아니 몇십 초의 시간이면 충분한 것이 바로 "프로"죠. 그리고 프로 정도의 레벨이 되면 그런 상대방의 의도를 예측하고 가로막는 것도 필요합니다. 앞서 이야기한 '운영'이라는 개념을 놓고 이야기해 보죠. 여기에서 두 가지가 갈립니다. 불리한 상황에서의 운영과, 유리한 상황에서의 운영. 불리한 상황이라 함은 자신의 구상이 최소 일정 부분 깨어진 상황입니다. 즉 초기에 자신이 생각했던 구상을 실현하기가 어렵거나 때에 따라서는 아예 실현이 불가능한 상태를 가리켜 불리한 상황이라 합니다. 이러한 불리한 상황에서의 운영의 핵심은 바로 변수 창출입니다. 계속해서 여기저기 두들겨 보면서 그 중 상대방의 손바닥 밖에 있는 포인트가 있다면, 그 점을 집요하게 노려서 결국 상대방의 구상도 깨고 상황을 최소 5대 5로 만드는 것. 그것이 불리한 상황에서의 운영입니다. 반대로 유리한 상황에서의 운영은 자신이 생각한 것을 그대로 밀고나갈 수 있도록 하는 운영입니다. 따라서 유리한 상황에서의 운영은 변수를 줄이는 것에 목표를 둡니다. 물론 한 변수를 제거하면 다른 변수가 일어나는 것이 RTS의 숙명이지만, 플레이어는 반드시 이 경중을 따져서 "상대적으로 컨트롤 가능한 변수"가 어느 쪽인가를 판단하여 밀고나가야 합니다. 예를 들면 다음과 같습니다. 유리한 상황에서 (워크래프트 해설이 말하는) "운영"을 하는 게이머는 그 목적에 따라 보통 3가지 유형으로 나눠 볼 수 있습니다. 멀티형, 교전형, 테러형. 물론 최종적인 목적은 승리를 위함이고, 겉보기에는 당장은 교전을 피했다가 최종적으로는 교전을 해서 이기는 게 목표처럼 보입니다. 그러나 그 과정이 서로 다르다는 거죠. 저처럼 손이 매우 느리고 교전 컨트롤이 떨어지는 사람으로서는, 아무래도 교전 그 자체는 좀 부담스러운 면이 있습니다. 그렇다면 상대방의 자원 소모와 나의 자원 소모가 서로 같지 않도록, 다시 말해서 상대방이 갖는 금 1의 가치와 내가 갖는 금 1의 가치가 서로 다르도록 하여 교전에서의 약함을 때우는 방법을 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 따라서 이런 경우는 멀티가 활성화되어 본인이 명백히 상대방보다 더 많은 병력 및 교전능력을 가져갈 때까지 '운영'을 하게 됩니다. 무슨 소리냐면... 본진 자원은 똑같고 나는 멀티를 먹고 상대방은 멀티를 안 먹고, 이런 자원 격차 때문에 굴릴 수 있는 생산 기지가 내가 2개 상대방이 1개면, 어떻게 되겠습니까? 대규모 교전에서 설령 상대방이 두 배로 잘 싸워서 내 유닛 2기가 죽을 동안 상대 유닛이 1개만 죽어도 이쪽이 꿀릴 것은 없고(물론 영웅 경험치라는 변수가 있는데 그건 나중에 반영합시다), 교환비가 1.5대 1이면 불리한 건 상대방입니다. 이런 이야기죠. 따라서 이런 결과를 얻기 위해서 멀티를 먹는 것이 멀티형입니다. 비슷한 방식으로 교전형과 테러형을 생각하시면 됩니다. 교전형은 자기가 교전에 자신이 있긴 한데 뭔가 조합이 좀 안 맞을 때, 예컨대 레이더가 좀 수가 모자란다던가, 혹은 원하는 수준의 업그레이드나 조합 또는 능력 개발(인스네어 개발 등)이 필요할 때, 그래서 시간을 좀 벌 필요가 있을 때 운영을 하는 스타일인 것이고, 테러형은 아예 운영(여기서의 운영은 물론 해설자가 말하는 좁은 의미에서의 운영을 말합니다) 그 자체에 초점을 두어서 상대방의 생산능력을 최대한 떨어뜨려 그쪽으로 자원이 낭비되도록 유도하여 전의를 상실하게 만드는 스타일인 것입니다. 이들은 모두 변수를 줄이고자 함이 목표입니다. 멀티형은 대규모 교전으로 인한 변수를 자원의 힘(즉 "양")으로 줄이고자 하고, 교전형은 교전을 목표로 하되 자신이 원하는 "질"이 갖춰지지 않음으로써 발생할 수 있는 변수를 차단하고자 하며, 테러형은 상대방이 재기하는 데 걸리는 "시간"을 강제로 늘려버림으로써 그로 인해 발생할 수 있는 변수를 차단하고자 하는 것입니다. 유리한 상황에 있는 플레이어, 특히 요즘 건물 방업이 2티어로 내려온 오크나 애초에 타워의 종족인 휴먼이 본진에 방어건물을 떡칠하는 이유도 다 그런 겁니다. 그렇게 함으로써 상대방의 변수를 차단할 수 있는 가치가 있다면 그렇게 하는 것이 옳은 것이죠. 이제 세번째 운영의 미덕을 짐작하시겠지요. 불리할 때는 변수를 만들어라. 유리할 때는 변수를 줄여라. 특히 유리할 때는 내가 가장 컨트롤하기 어려운 변수를 잘 생각해서 그 변수를 줄이는 쪽으로 계획을 세워라. 그래야 그 작전이 성공하기 쉽다. 결론 및 요약합니다. 운영이란 개념은 모호합니다. 군사적인 측면에서 놓고 보았을 때 운영은 거의 작전 정도의 단계입니다. 일종의 판짜기죠. "운영"을 명확히 정의하면 "승리를 얻기 위해 중간 목표를 갖고 시행되는 일련의 움직임"이 됩니다. 그리고 흔히 해설에서 말하는 "좁은 의미에서의 운영"은 "이러한 움직임 중 상대방과의 당장 교전을 피하면서 소기의 중간 목표를 달성하고자 상대방이 없는 틈을 타 이득을 취하려는 행위"로 특정지어집니다. 이 두 개념이 섞여서 "운영"이라 통칭이 되니 처음 운영이라는 개념을 듣고 접하는 초심자들 입장에서는 어려운 이야기가 될 수밖에요. 당장 이 글도 사실 운영이라는 용어가 상당히 혼용이 되어 있습니다. 어떤 때는 광의적으로, 어떤 때는 좁은 의미로. 그걸 구분짓고자 최대한 노력했습니다만, 혹 미진한 부분이 있다면 제 설명 능력이 부족한 탓이니 양해를 부탁드리겠습니다. 여하간, 운영(그것이 좁은 의미건 넓은 의미건)에서 반드시 기억해야 할 사항은 다음과 같습니다. 1. 운영은 그 목적이 명확해야 한다. 2. 실행 가능한 작전을 수립하라. 3. 불리하면 변수를 늘리고, 유리하면 변수를 줄여라. 마지막으로 이 모든 것을 관통하는 사마의의 명언...을 각색한, 드라마 선덕여왕에서 미실이 말한 명언입니다. 이 글을 쓰고 나니 왜 사마의가 명장이었는지 알 것 같습니다. 싸울 수 있는 날엔 싸우면 되고, 싸울 수 없는 날엔 지키면 되고, 지킬 수 없는 날엔 후퇴하면 되고...후퇴할 수 없는 날엔 항복하면 되고, 항복할 수 없는 날엔.. 항복할 수 없는 날엔...그날 죽으면 그만이네. 전 아직까지 워3 전략의 절반 정도는 아직 발견되지 않았다고 생각해요.
그동안 블리자드가 밸런스패치를 영웅 중심으로 했기 때문에 아무리 전략이 병X같아도 영웅빨로 극복하는 게임이 정말 많았거든요. 데몬헌터라든지, 블마라든지, 워든 처럼요. 그런데 최근 패치 경향들은 유닛의 비중을 높이는 방향으로 가고 있어요. 전 이걸 아주 긍정적으로 평가합니다. RTS 게임이 RPG처럼 가는 걸 이제라도 막아내고 있으니까요.
