퍼스트맨 짧은 생각들 아마 위플래시와 라라랜드를 좋아했던 사람들은 '셔젤감독 다음 작품은 무적권 챙겨봐야지' 같은 생각을 했을 것 같아요. 두 작품일 뿐이지만 강렬한 작가주의가 저변에 있다는 걸 느낄 수 있는데, 이런 작품들은 감독의 전작에서 받은 느낌을 연장시켜주는 경험을 할 수 있으니까요. 표현하고 보니까 무슨 약쟁이같음 ㅋㅋ 퍼스트맨은 소재가 별로 끌리는 영화는 아니었어요. 아마 제가 셔젤 감독을 한 10년 쯤 뒤에 접하고 7개쯤 되는 그의 필모를 원하는 대로 하나씩 보는 상황이었다면 퍼스트맨은 걸렀을듯.. 작년에 라라랜드를 봤기 때문에 보기로 결정한 영화에요. 그리고 다행이라고 생각하는 게 소재에 대한 제 편견이나 호불호 때문에 이 영화를 늦게 접했다면 아마 후회했을꺼에요. 소재가 끌리지 않았던 이유는 '닐 암스트롱'이 제게는 매력적인 인물이 아니기 때문이에요. 달탐사란 이벤트는 한 번도 재밌다고 생각한 적이 없었어요. 인류사적 의의 보다도, 전 그 사건이 기본적으로 역동적이지 않다고 느껴요. 역사적 사건이 진정으로 흥미로울 때는 당대의 주류가치와 부딪치면서 승자와 패자를 가릴 때라고 생각하는 데.. 저는 달탐사에서 그런 걸 느끼지 못했거든요. 그 저변에 깔린 국가주의적 가치나 냉전시대의 갈등도 지루하고요. 여기에 대해서는 북미나 우리나라에서도 많은 얘기가 나왔는 데, 아폴로 달착륙이 힘 있는 소재가 아니라는 건 저만 가진 생각은 아닌 거 같다는 결론을 내림.. 물론 거기서 거기인 싶은 자료들만 봐서 내린 편향된 결론임을 인정하는 바입니다. 영화 얘기보다 서론이 더 길어졌는데 ㅋㅋ 영화는 다행히도 제가 기대한 것과는 다르게 정치와 같은 암스트롱을 둘러싼 환경에 시간을 할애하지 않아요. 달탐사 과정에서 암스트롱이 잃는 것들, 달탐사 후에 암스트롱이 겪어야 하는 것들을 보여주죠. 소음과 색없는 금속덩어리에 갇혀서 우주로 나가는 장면에서, 우주공간의 스펙터클과 지구의 장관은 그렇게 감동적이지도 가슴벅차오르지도 않아요. 가시적으로 나타난 암스트롱의 꿈 보다 그 앞의 현실들이 너무 고통스러워서.. 이건 우주비행 과정에 대한 고증이 잘 되었다 이런 문제라기 보다는, 영화의 주제의식과 우주비행이라는 사건이이 잘 맞아떨어졌다 이렇게 표현하고 싶어요. 결론은 셔젤 감독은 셔젤 감독이었다는 거에요. 그 꿈이 음악이든 달착륙이든 그 과정에서 사람이 겪어야 하는 것은 본질적으로 같다는 게.. 감독이 가진 그 명쾌한 통찰에 공감할 수 밖에 없었어요. 영화에서 그리는 꿈을 향한 여정과 그 여정속에서 잃어야 하는 것들, 감수해야하는 고통들과 꿈을 이룬 후에 견뎌야하는 세상이.. 실제 현실을 정확하게 모사한 게 아니더라도 별 상관없다는 것. 오히려 현실이 그것과 정반대라 하더라도 전 셔젤의 작품세계속 현실을 납득할 수 있을 것 같아요. 영화의 논리로 설득당했으니까요. 정지해 있는 물체와 운동하는 물체의 본질이 다르다는 게 물리적으로 사실이 아닌 게 무슨 상관이겠어요? 그 철학을 구성하는 논리가 탄탄하다면 충분히 사람을 설득할 힘을 가지고 있는걸요. 그런 의미에서 딴 소리를 좀 하면.. 이 영화를 둘러싼 정치적 갈등.. 성조기 장면을 삭제했다는 등의 이유로 불만을 터트리는 보수적 의견은.. 셔젤에게서 셔젤을 기대하지 않았기 때문에 나왔다는 생각이 들어요. 달착륙이라는 위대한 역사적 순간에서 카타르시스를 거세해서 내놓았으니 '이 색히 반미반동분자아냐?'라는 소리가 나올 수 밖에 ㅋㅋ.. 이 감독이 전작의 성공 덕분에 인정받고, 좀 더 마음껏 찍을 수 있어서 이런 신선한 관점의 - 초반 화려한 발사장면이 없는, 히어로와는 거리가 먼 답답한 주인공 등 - 달착륙영화가 나오지 않았나 싶습니다. 우주개발사를 좋아하는 편이라 관련 히스토리를 어느 정도 알고 달착륙 관련 영화, 영상도 안 본게 없는 상태였는데도 퍼스트맨은 참 재밌게 봤습니다. 오히려 그냥 '운 좋게 처음 달에 내린 사람'으로만 생각했던 닐 암스트롱을 완전히 다시 보는 계기가 되었습니다. 길게 감동이 남는 영화였습니다.
