우리나라 사람들은 참 해외에서 우리를 어떻게 보는 지에 대한 의식을 많이 하는 것 같습니다. 그게 어떠한 사회, 심리학적 배경을 통해서 발현이 되는지는 모르겠지만 아무튼 외부의 시선을 지나치게 의식하는 태도가 아직까지도 많이 남아있는 것 같습니다. 그리고 이러한 외부의 시선을 의식하는 태도를 가장 잘 보여주는 질문이 아마도 "두 유 노우 강남스타일?"이 아닌가 합니다. 요즘은 이에 대한 지적들도 많이 나와서 반성하고 자제하는 분위기가 형성이 된 것 같은데 몇 년 전만 하더라도 해외에서 누가 방한을 하면 그가 가순지 배운지를 가리지 않고 항상 "두 유 노우 싸이?", "두 유 노우 강남스타일?"을 부르짖었던 거사 같습니다. 이러한 질문들의 자매품으로 "두 유 노의 킴치?"와 이제는 한 풀 꺾였지만 "두 유 노우 지성팍?"과 "두 유 노우 유나킴?"도 있었지요. 그런데 80년대 중반 이러한 모든 것의 원조 격이라고 할 만한 한 사건이 있었습니다. 80년대는 지금과는 달리 가요보다 팝송이 더 인기가 많았던 시절이었습니다. 라디오에서도 팝송을 많이 틀어주던 시대였지요. 그런데 그런 해외 팝스타들 가운데 캥거루를 아주 싫어하는 나라인 오스트리아 출신의 3인조 밴드 Joy가 있었습니다. 이들은 경쾌한 댄스곡인 [Touch By Touch]라는 곡으로 그야말로 혜성과 같이 등장해서 큰 인기를 얻었습니다.  Joy... 기실 Joy라는 밴드는 전 세계적으로 큰 인기를 얻었던 밴드는 결코 아니었고 유럽에서도 겨우 이름이나 좀 알린 정도의 밴드였습니다. 요즘 같았으면 아마 국내에서 그만한 인기를 얻을 정도의 밴드는 아니었을 겁니다. 그래도 그땐 한국에서 Joy의 인기는 남부럽지 않을 정도였지요. 이들이 한국으로 프로모션을 올 즈음해서 [Touch By Touch]가 수록된 앨범의 후속 앨범을 발표하게 되는데 이때 이 새로운 앨범에 놀란 만한(?) 곡이 하나 수록이 됩니다. 그 노래의 제목은 다름 아닌 [Korean Girls]였습니다. 제목 그대로 [한국 소녀들]이었지요. 지금처럼 K-팝이 나름 큰 인기를 끌던 시기도 아니고 한국이라고 하면 외국 사람들이 잘 알지 못하던 시기에 그래도 (우리가 보기에는) 제법 인기가 있는 해외 밴드가 한국이라는 단어가 들어가는 노래를 만들어서 자신들의 앨범에 실었다?...큰 사건이었습니다. 한국 팬들의 큰 사랑에 보답하고자 Joy가 한국 팬들을 위해 특별히 만든 노래라는 것이 당시에 알려진 이 노래의 배경이었습니다. 노래 하나에 괜히 대한민국의 국력이 인정을 받은 것 같은 기분이었다고 하면 지나친 상상이었을까요? 저 역시 왠지 모르게 뿌듯해 했던 사람들 가운데 하나였음을 굳이 부인하지는 않겠습니다...--;;; [Korean Girls]는 국내에 전파를 타기 시작하자마자 큰 인기를 얻기 시작했고 라디오를 틀면 나오는 노래가 되었습니다. 그런데 그것도 잠시...노래가 나온 지 채 한 달도 안됐나 싶은 시점에서 갑자기 한국에서 이 노래가 흔적도 없이 자취를 감추게 됩니다. 하루아침에 라디오에서 더 이상 이 노래를 들을 수 없게 된 것이었습니다. 사연인즉슨, 원래 Joy가 후속 앨범에 실었던 원곡은 [Japanese Girls]라는 노래였습니다. 그런데 한국에서 인기를 얻으면서 한국으로 프로모션 투어를 오려다 보니 급하게 제목과 가사에서 "Japanese"라는 부분을 "Korean"으로 바꾸고 다시 녹음한 노래가 바로 문제의 [Korean Girls]라는 노래였던 것이었습니다. 이러한 사실이 알려지고 나자 더 이상 이 노래는 우리나라에서 전파를 탈 수 없었습니다. 많고 많은 나라들 가운데 하필이면 일본이라니. 2010년대도 아니고 80년대에 말입니다. 우리의 자존심에 커다란 상처를 안기는 사건이었습니다. 처음부터 아예 노래를 안 만들었으면 모를까 원래 일본을 대상으로 만든 노래를 가사와 제목만 바꿔서 한국 팬들을 위한 노래인 것처럼 소개를 했으니 뒤통수를 제대로 맞은 기분이었지요. 이 일 때문이었는지 Joy의 인기도 이후 곧 시들해져 버렸던 것으로 기억이 됩니다... 해외에서 우리를 어떻게 평가하는지 민감하게 반응하는 감정과 해외 밴드가 한국을 소재로 하는 노래를 불렀다는 그 뿌듯함이 불러온 한편의 희비극이자 해프닝이었습니다. 그래도 노래 자체는 그렇게 나쁘진 않은데...이제는 아무리 [배철수의 음악캠프]에 신청을 해도 들을 수 없는 노래가 되고 말았습니다...--;;; 문제의 노래...[Korean Girls]... 어호 80년대 노래에 조예가 깊으신걸 보니 아재시군요.
엠비씨였나 케비씨였나 여튼, 조이의 내한콘서트를 녹화방송으로 본기억이 나네요.
처음부터 끝까지 립씽크 공연이었습니\'다. 가끔 \'컴온~!!\' \'와우~!!\' 하는 소리만 자기 목소리였구요.
뭐 실력이 없어서일수도 라이브를 할 수 없을만한 상황이었을수도 있겠지만 붕어처럼 뻥끗뻥끗하는 걸 보려고 돈내고 가셨을 분들이 참 안됬다 싶은 공연이었지요.
그러고보니 런던보이스도 내한했던거 같기도 한데....
