정신병동. 폐쇄된 곳에 갇혀 있으면서 많은 생각을 했습니다. 머릿속에 영구히 박혀 있는 장치가 떼어지는 기분 속에서 그 전까지 걸렸던 병들을 다시 생각하고, 전부터 느껴왔던 절망감을 다시 생각하고, 그때까지 봤던 사람들의 말들을 다시 생각하게 되었습니다. 저는 그곳에서 때때로 신을 생각하였습니다. 이것은 그 결과물입니다. 너무 생각이 많습니다. 흐름이 원활치 않더라 하더라도 봐 주시길 부탁드립니다. 진부한 일화 한 가지를 소개하겠습니다. 알래스카의 외딴 황무지에 있는 한 술집에서 두 사나이가 술을 마시고 있습니다. 한 사람은 유신론자이고 다른 한 사람은 무신론자입니다. 무신론자가 말합니다. "여보게, 내가 딱히 이유도 없이 신을 믿지 않는 게 아니란 말일세. 나라고 하느님이라든가 기도라든가 하는 것을 한 번도 안 해본 줄 아나? 바로 지난달에 있었던 일만 해도 그래. 고약한 폭설이 있던 날인데, 캠프 근처에서 그만 길을 잃고 말았어. 눈앞에 보이는 건 아무것도 없지. 도대체 여기가 어딘지도 모르겠지, 날씨는 영하 50도였고 말이야. 그래서 했지. 기도를 했단 말이야. 눈 위에 무릎을 꿇고 소리쳤어. '하느님, 만약 하느님이 계시다면 말이예요, 이 폭설에 길 잃은 저를 보십시오, 당신이 안 도와주시면 저는 죽는 수밖에 없습니다!'" 그러자 곁에 있는 유신론자가 무척 의아하다는 얼굴로 무신론자를 바라봅니다. 그가 말합니다. "음, 그러면 이제는 신을 믿겠구먼. 결국 이렇게 멀쩡히 살아 있으니까 말이야." 유신론자의 말에 무신론자는 눈알을 굴리면서 이런 바보는 처음 봤다는 듯한 표정을 짓습니다. "그게 아니라고, 이 사람아. 때마침 에스키모인 몇 명이 근처를 지나가다가 나를 본 것뿐이었어. 그 사람들이 길을 가르쳐준 덕분에 캠프로 돌아올 수 있었던 거지." 갇혀 있는 저에게 키르케고르는 큰 도움이 되어 주었습니다. 자신을 다른 사람으로 보게 만들었습니다. 자기 자신을 규정하는 방식이 타인을 규정하는 방식과 같기 때문입니다. 정신은 자기 자신을 바라보는 것이었습니다. 이 옆에 있는 모든 현실들에서 신을 앞에 두고 한 걸음씩 걷는 저를 생각하였습니다. 저가 무엇인지 의미를 얻고, 현실에 집착하지 않은 채 자신을 저 멀리서 바라보며 다른 인생들을 보는 것은 키르케고르가 말한 신의 정의였습니다. 저는 무가 될 수 없음에서 절망하고 있었습니다. "인간이 서야 할 자리를 찾아 주려는 안간힘"이 신앙이었습니다. 나 자신을 확고한 중심으로 보는 자신의 철학을 접어두어야 했습니다. 깊은 속마음에 박혀 있던 것은 그곳에서 떼어진 것처럼 보았습니다. 타인이 무엇인지에 대해 보아야 했습니다. 나와 타인은 다른 것이 없음을 알게 되었어요. 그 에스키모인들은 눈에 보이는 것 이상의 무언가 다른 게 있는 존재일지도 모릅니다. 이 삶에 붙어 있는 병이 원죄임을 알았고 이것이 축복임을 알아야 함을 깨달았습니다. 하지만 제가 말하고 싶은 것은, 이 주제가 [아닙니다]. 저 위에 있는 이야기들은 아무것도 생각 안하셔도 됩니다. 이제 나오는 글과는 아무 상관 없고, 위에 있는 거 자세히 안 보셔도 다 괜찮습니다. 저는 이렇게 생각하게 되었지만, 복병이 된 곳은 저 아래, 가장 저차원적인 물음이었습니다. 저는 그 후에, 무엇인가 정말 바보같은 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 그 바보같고, 너무나 초보적인 생각이 제 머리를 콱 잡고 있었습니다. 그 생각을 축약을 하면 이렇게 되는 것입니다. "사람들과 더불어 살아가야 해, 따라서 너는 2000여년 전 누군가가 처녀인데 임신했다는 것을 사실이라 받아들여야 해" "너의 절망이라는 삶의 극복을 위해, 너는 2000여년 전 누군가가 죽은지 3일 뒤에 부활했다는 것을 사실이라 받아들여야 해" 이런 이상한 명제를 마주치게 되었습니다. 전에 설명할, 신을 믿을 이유와 비교해 볼 때, 이런 명제는 사소할 대로 사소한 것일 뿐이죠. 질문이 저 아래로 떨어진 듯한, 아주 조그마한 역사를 믿어야 한다는 것 뿐이죠. 하지만, 정작 명제의 해답을 찾으려 들려면 얼마나 복잡하고 어려운지요. 이것은 사소한 것이 아닙니다, 분명 누군가한테는요. 제 고등학교 반 친구가 바로 이 점 때문에, 생명과학을 공부하지 않으려고 문과로 전향을 했었죠. 정말 이런 “사소한 것”에 믿음과의 결별이 일어나면서 더 이상 참을 수 없게 된 경우인 거겠죠. 물론 성경의 많은 부분이 곧이곧대로 믿는, 성서무오설이 아니라고 하더라도, 성서의 많은 부분이 오직 비유라고 하더라도, 이 문제는 계속 남아있습니다. 결국 결정적인 부분은 어떻게든 남을 것입니다. 기독교인들 중에서 그 누가 예수의 부활을 오직 비유로서만 받아들일까요? “그리스도께서 만일 다시 살아나지 못하셨으면 우리가 전파하는 것도 헛것이요 또 너희 믿음도 헛”될텐데 말입니다.(고전 15:14) 신을 믿어야 할까요? 다윈을 믿으면서, 지질학과 생명과학을 믿으면서 동시에 예수를 믿을 수 있을까요? 그리고 많은 것이 생각이 났습니다. 하나의 질문으로는 끝나지 못할 것 같았습니다. 제 말 좀 제발 들어주세요. 정말 무엇인가 이야기할 내용이 있습니다. 도저히 언어로 담아내기가 너무나 힘듭니다. 이 질문들 전체를 뒤엎어버리는 무엇인가가 있어요. 무엇인가가 있습니다. 최대한 그것을 보이려고 질문 7가지를 만들었습니다. 두번째. 신을 어떻게 믿어야 하는 걸까요? 신을 어떤 과정에서 믿어야 하며, 어떻게 해야 신을 제대로 믿는 것일까요.  요즘 유행하는 분인 "트락타투스"도 이렇게 잘못된 판단을 합니다… 여기서 이야기를 좀 할게요. 위에 있는 것을 포함해서, 아래에 있는 질문까지 다 대답해줄 사람. 구석구석에 있는 물음까지 다 대답해줄 사람들이 있을 것입니다. 신학자라고 하죠. 신학에서 어떤 것을 논의하는지에 대해서는 제 능력의 부족으로 이 글에 담아낼 수는 없습니다. 적어도 어떤 오해도 없게는 쓸 수가 없습니다. 하지만 제가 언급하고 싶은 사람은, 바트 어만이라는 사람입니다. 저는 이 사람의 영향을 많이 받았습니다. 그 관점의 변화 전에도 말이예요. 바트 어만은 신학자이자 무신론자인 놀라운 결합을 가지고 있었기 때문에 알고 있었습니다. “성경 왜곡의 역사” 는 제가 읽은 책이고, 여기 있는 여러가지 물음에서 좋은 동반자가 되었습니다. 이 분에게는 각오가 되어 있었습니다. 성서무오설을 주장하는 견실한 기독교도인들을 비판하려고 드는 각오가 있다는 것이예요. 전까지는 신격화되었다고 봤던 성경에 수정된 부분이 있다고 말할 각오가 있다는 것이예요. 저는 이것에서 무엇인가 말할 것이 있다고 봤어요. 세상에 신격화가 사라졌기 때문에 바트 어만 같은 사람이 있었던 것 아니었을까요. 이슬람에서 코란을 연구하는 신학자를 예로 들어봅시다. 조금이라도 그에 대해 소수 의견을 가지면 큰 불이익을 겪습니다. 코란의 본질을 바라보는 데에 신격화라는 어떤 벽이 있어 바트 어만과 달리 더 이상 진행되지 못했던 것이죠. 여기서 말할 점은 이것입니다. 바트 어만과 신을 믿는 사람을 비교해 볼때, 과연 어떤 사람이 더 [잘 믿은] 사람일까요? 따라서, 어떤 것을 믿음이라고 보아야 할까요? 바트 어만은 “믿는” 사람일까요? 한국에 있는 그 어떤 목사들보다도 더 이 분야에서 잘 알고 있는 사람이라고 할 수 있을까요? 성경과 관련한 것에 대해 분석을 하고, 그에 스켑틱이 되는 것도 믿음이라고 할 수 있을까요? 이 이야기가 아니더라도, 어떻게 신을 믿어야 할까요? 세번째. 종교는 무엇이라고 봐야 할까요? 어떤 것이 바로 종교일까요? 종교의 정의는 과연 무엇일까요? 존재하는 것, 지금까지 사실이라고 봐 왔던 것으론 절대 당위를 이끌어낼 수 없다는 흄 같은 사람이 있었음에도 과학을 통해 도덕을 설명할 수 있을 것이라 말하는 사람들. 과학에 있어 모든 보편적인 개념을 표현할 수 있다고 “믿는” 사람을 뭐라고 해야 할까요? 이 분들에게 있어서 이것을 종교라고, 과학을 신격화한, 물신숭배로 받아들인 사람이라 할 수 있지 않을까요? 종교를 어떻게 정의내려야만 할까요? 네번째. 종교는 과연 심판을 하는 것일까요? 천국과 지옥은 정말로 존재하며, 어떤 규칙을 따를까요? 이 세계는 무엇이며, 신은 왜 사람들에게 고통을 부여했을까요? 심판이라는 게 무엇이고, 구원이라는 게 무엇이고, 바라는 것과 믿는 것이 무엇일까요? 삼각형 중에서 "가장 좋은 삼각형" 이라고 할 수 없는 것과 같은 관점으로 신에게는 구원이나 기적을 바랄 수 없다고 본 것에 불과하지 않을까요? 신이 곧 자연이며, 지금까지 신을 기존의 믿는 방법으로 믿던 사람들은 중력 법칙에 기도를 했던 이상한 사람들밖에 되지 않는 것이 아닐까요? 단지 사람에게 내재된 그 모든 명석한 마음으로 이 세상의 문제를 해결해나갈 수 있지 않을까요? 이렇게 생각하는 것도 신을 믿는 것이 아닐까요. 아니라고 역사 속의 사람들은 이야기해왔습니다. 이렇게 생각했던 사람의 이름은 스피노자이긴 합니다. 스피노자를 언급했지만, 스피노자로 끝날 이야기가 아니예요. 스피노자를 넣든 무함마드를 넣든 아인슈타인을 넣든 이런 관점을 가졌던 사람은 스피노자뿐이 아니라고 해야만 합니다. 스피노자와 같은 사람들은 이 세계에 있고, 그 전에도 그 후에도 있습니다. 그 당시의 신은 인간의 모습을 하고 있다는 관점이었습니다. 신이 곧 자연이란 그의 대답은 그 당시 화형을 당하기에도 충분한 발언이었습니다. 지금까지도 누구는 누구의 관점에서 다른 사람을 불지옥에 보내야 한다고 합니다. 다른 사람들과 다른 믿음을 가진 사람들이 있었고, 이들을 지옥에 보내려고 했던 사람들이 곧 참된 종교를 믿는다고 하는 사람이었습니다. 하지만, 스피노자가 과연 지옥에 가야만 하는 사람이었을까요? 그 모든 스피노자들의 신의 관점은 옳은 것일까요? 이 모든 스피노자들은 신의 관점에서 옳은 것일까요? 성경을 해석하는 사람들은, 천차만별로 다릅니다. 자기 뜻으로 해석하는 사람들마다 다르다면 우리 모두가 스피노자가 아닐까요? 정말 사람 중 지옥에 가야 적합한 사람이 있을까요? 다른 사람들이 생각하는 것 중 어떤 것이 심판과 연관이 될까요? 신은 이 분을 지옥으로 보냈을까요? 한국에서 개신교를 믿는 것은 어쩌면 동굴 속의 그림자를 믿는 것이 아닐까요? ( 지금까지 저는 이 물음들에 대응하는 대답들을 찾으려 했습니다. 그리고, 그 신에 대한 이 모든 물음들 중에서 유일하게 성경이 만족스러운 해답을 준 것이 있습니다. “신은 왜 사람들에게 고통을 줬을지”에 대해서 해결이 되었습니다. 이 문제는… 욥기로 답을 얻었습니다. 그 굉장히 깔끔한 대답으로 인해 제가 가장 좋아하는 성경 이야기가 되었지만 … 정말 이것이 답의 방향이라고 할 수 있을까요. ) 다섯번째. 무슨 종교를 믿어야 할까요? 기독교를 믿어야 할까요, 불교를 믿어야 할까요. (네, 이것도 언젠간 말해야 했습니다. 이것에 대해 질문을 가졌습니다.) 기독교와 불교의 차이는 무조건 있겠죠. 그렇다면 그것은 무엇일까요? 별 차이가 없는 것일까요? 저는 여기서 "신격화" 에 대한 내용을 담은 것이 아닙니다. (기독교 목사가 불교에 대해서 표면적으로 믿지 말라는 그 짧은 언어만을 담은 것이 아닙니다.) 제가 말하고 싶은 것은 그 종교, 그 종교에 대한 철학의 개념에 진정 다른 관점이 있는지에 대한 것이예요. "개신교를 왜 믿어? 내 마음이 편할라고! 불교는 왜 믿어? 내 마음이 편할라고!" 라고 단정짓는 사람에게 무슨 말을 해줄 수 있을까요? 개신교와 불교는 대체 어느 정도 차이가 있고, 어느 정도 공통점이 있는 것일까요? 기독교와 불교를 똑같은 마음으로 하여 믿을 수 있을까요? 이것보다 더 사소한 문제를 하나 언급한다면, 기독교, 확장해 아브라함의 종교에서 불교와 비슷한 철학을 가졌던 때가 언제고, 누구였나요? 여섯번째. 위에 있던 이야기들을 알아내기 위해 꼭 유신론자가 되어야만 할까요? 사람들과 더불어 살아간다는 그 개념은 필연적으로 종교를 믿어야 알 수 있는 것일까요? 이렇게 예를 들 수 있을 거예요. 유신론자들이 많은 상황이었기 때문에 신격화와 같은 교회의 패권으로, 교회에 가서 무신론이 안 좋다고 듣기만 한 유신론자들이 있었습니다. 그 유신론자가 무신론자를 만날 때 이런 말을 꺼냅니다.
