[본문은 현재 연재중인 일본 만화 다이아몬드 에이스의 내용을 담고 있습니다. 초반부 내용 뿐만 아니라 후반 연재분에 대한 얘기도 있으니 스포일러에 주의하시기 바랍니다.] 테라지마 유지가 2006년부터 연재하고 있는 만화 다이아몬드 에이스(원제 다이아의 A)는 일본 야구 만화 역사상 가장 리얼한 작품으로 꼽히고 있습니다. 필살기 난무로 적을 쓰러뜨리는 일본 스포츠만화의 주류와는 매우 거리가 있고, 아다치 미츠루의 작품들처럼 야구라는 소재를 빌려 다른 이야기를 하고 있는 것도 아닙니다. 물론 비현실적인 요소가 아예 없는 건 아니고 잘못된 이론도 많긴 하지만, 일본의 고등학교 야구부를 가장 잘 표현한 만화라는 게 중론입니다. 이는 고등학교에서 고시엔에 도전했던 작가의 경험에 기반하고 있고요. 여기서 '야구부를 잘 표현했다'가 중요한 포인트인데, 주인공이 약체팀을 이끌고 파란을 일으키는 일반적인 스포츠만화와 달리 주인공이 소속된 세이도는 경기 전 구호에서 '왕자(王者) 세이도'를 외치는 서도쿄의 명문팀입니다. 5년인가 6년 동안 고시엔을 못 나가고 있어서 압박이 있다는 설정인지라 무슨 명문이 이래? 라고 생각할 수 있지만, 다른 곳도 아니고 격전구 도쿄라면 명문교라고 한들 충분히 있을 수 있는 일입니다. 가령 봄여름 합쳐 고시엔 우승 3회, 준우승 2회인 동도쿄 최고의 명문, '왕자'라고 불리던 테이쿄는 올해까지 7년 연속 고시엔에 못 나가고 있는 상황이고, 작가가 연재를 시작한 00년대 중반으로 돌아가보면 카나가와의 양대 명문 중 하나인 도카이사가미가 2000년 센바츠 우승 이후 줄곧 고배를 마시다가 2005년 센바츠가 되어서야 고시엔에 돌아올 수 있었습니다. 현재 일본의 고교야구는 명문 사립학교가 전국 각지의 유망주들을 긁어모으는 야구사관학교가 되어 우승 경쟁을 하는 경우가 대부분이고, 부원이 100명이 넘는 학교도 존재합니다. 주인공네 세이도 역시 그런 명문교인지라 부원의 숫자가 90명이 넘고, 이 만화는 수많은 엑스트라급 캐릭터들까지도 조명하면서 '세이도 야구부'를 그려내고 있습니다. 하지만 무엇보다 인상적인 건 주인공의 라이벌일 겁니다. 스포츠 만화에서 라이벌은 대결을 위해서 다른 팀인 경우가 많고, 같은 팀의 라이벌은 결국 라이벌 의식이 희미해지기 마련이죠. 야구 만화는 주인공이 투수라면 라이벌은 타자인 경우가 많고, 투수라고 하더라도 다른 학교 선수입니다. 사실 이게 당연한 게 직접적으로 주인공과 대결하기 위해선 투수vs타자의 대결이 그리기 좋고, 투수를 라이벌로 내세우는 경우에는 상대로 만나 치열한 투수전을 벌인다든지 이런 구도로 만드니까요. 그런데 다이아몬드 에이스에서 주인공 사와무라 에이준의 최대 라이벌은 라이벌 학교의 에이스 나루미야 메이도 아니고, 괴물 타자 토도로키 라이치도 아니고, 최종보스로 보이는 혼고 마사무네도 아니라 같은 학교 동갑내기 투수 후루야 사토루입니다. 1명 뿐인 '에이스 투수'의 자리를 경쟁하는 주인공과 라이벌이 동시에 뛴다는 건 있을 수 없습니다. 결국 한 명은 져야해요. 이 점에서 슬램덩크의 강백호-서태웅과도 다른 기묘한 관계죠. 이런 차별성 덕분에 다이아몬드 에이스는 기존의 야구 만화와는 다른 점에서 호평을 받고 꽤나 순항할 수 있었습니다. 그런데 문제는 이 작품의 장점이 역으로 단점으로도 작용하고 있다는 겁니다. 캐릭터 하나하나를 다 다루자니 필연적으로 연습 등의 성장 과정에 많은 시간을 투자할 수밖에 없고, 다른 학교도 소개해야 하니까 역시 진행이 느려질 수밖에 없는 거죠. 점점 스토리는 늘어지고 지루해져갑니다. 주인공의 1학년 여름이 끝나고 3학년에서 2학년으로 중심축이 이동할 때 한 번 이랬고, 해가 바뀌어서 여름대회를 준비하는 과정에서 또 이렇습니다. 그래도 이런 진행 문제야 장기연재하는 만화의 특성상 어쩔 수 없다고 이해해볼 수 있는데 이것과는 궤가 다른 문제가 하나 더 남아있습니다. 바로 라이벌 후루야 사토루라는 캐릭터를 어떻게 '정리'할 것이냐는 문제죠. 일본 고교야구의 혹사 문제는 꾸준히 지적받아왔고, 여전히 혹사 문제가 있긴 하지만 그렇다고 예전만큼 선수를 막 갈아대지는 않습니다(개인적으로는 미국에서까지 까였던 안라쿠 토모히로 케이스가 큰 느낌입니다). 물론 올해 카나아시노의 요시다 코세이는 말도 안되는 혹사를 당하긴 했습니다만 이쪽은 시골학교의 절대적 에이스 + 모두의 예상을 뛰어넘은 호성적 + 도호쿠 지역의 대표라는 특수성 등 여러가지가 맞물려 이례적인 혹사가 된 것이고 모두가 이 정도로 갈아넣어지진 않습니다. 어느 신문은 '헤이세이 시대의 끝에 쇼와 시대의 에이스가 나타났다'라고 평하기도 했었죠. 오늘날 전력이 두터운 명문교는 투수를 여럿 보유하기 때문에 한 명에게 몰빵하는 쪽이 오히려 보기 드뭅니다. 올해 고시엔 8강에 진출한 오미 고교는 1회전에서 4명의 계투를 투입했고 이후 치른 3경기에서 모두 2명의 투수를 사용했습니다. 최강 오사카토인이나 도쿄의 왕자 니치다이산은 3명의 투수를 번갈아 썼고, 이제 에이스 1명에 의존하는 팀은 우승 못 한다는 인식까지 자리잡은 상태입니다. 사실 작중에서도 최신 연재분도 아니고 초반부에 이미 이미 '투수를 여럿 쓰는 게 대세 아니냐, 감독은 너무 에이스에 집착한다'는 대사가 나오기도 했죠. 그런데도 '여전히 혹사 문제가 있긴 하다'라고 쓴 건, 투수를 여럿 쓰는 게 보편화됐어도 어쨌든 중요한 순간에는 에이스에게 몰빵하기 때문입니다. 남들이 대회 중간부터 요시다 코세이의 혹사를 깔 때 저는 오사카토인의 카키기 렌 기용을 까고 있었는데, 이쪽은 3명의 투수가 전부 타 학교의 에이스급인데도 불구하고 결국 막판에 카키기 몰빵을 시켜버렸거든요. 투수를 여럿 쓰더라도 에이스라는 개념은 여전히 존재하며, 특히 에이스에게 주어지는 등번호 1번의 상징성은 고등학교 투수들에게 그 무엇보다 중요합니다(흔히 일본야구의 에이스는 18번이라는 얘기가 있지만 그건 대학이나 프로 얘기이고, 고교야구만큼은 1번이 에이스입니다). 사정이 이러하니 제목에 '에이스'를 달아놓고 주인공이 '나는 에이스가 될 거야!'를 외치는 투수인 만화에서 주인공과 라이벌이 하하호호하면서 양립하는 건 불가능한 일인 거죠. 결국 라이벌이 패배자가 되어야만 합니다. 그럼 왜 특색이던 라이벌의 존재가 문제가 되느냐, 그건 라이벌을 너무 강력하게 만들었기 때문입니다. 주인공 사와무라 에이준은 구속은 느리지만 투수로서 필요한 멘탈을 타고났고, 뛰어난 제구와 공의 변화를 지녔습니다. 후루야 사토루는 이에 대한 안티테제로 모든 걸 무시할 수 있는 괴물 같은 강속구 투수로 등장합니다. 물론 고교야구에서도 강속구 투수가 구속만 앞세우다 무너지는 경우는 종종 있긴 합니다만 스펙을 비정상적으로 강력하게 만들다보니 에이준이 사토루를 꺾고 에이스를 차지하는 과정을 납득 가능하게 그리는 게 너무나도 어려워진 상황입니다. 사토루는 입학하자마자 춘계 관동대회에서 이미 150km/h를 기록하는데 일반적으로 고1이 140km/h만 넘겨도 화제가 되는 걸 고려했을 때 황당할 정도로 엄청난 스펙이죠(심지어 스포츠 추천입학도 아니고 일반입학으로 들어온 무명이라는 설정). 당시 기준으로 1학년의 고시엔 최고구속 기록은 147km/h이고 지금도 148km/h입니다. 뭐 지방대회나 연습경기에서는 뻥튀기되는 경우도 많고, 강속구 투수라고 하더니 고시엔 와서 140대 초반 찍는 케이스가 심심찮게 있으니까 여기까지는 그럴 수도 있다 싶은데... 문제는 이듬해 센바츠에서 154km/h를 기록해버립니다. 고2가 문제가 아니라 센바츠 전체 역대 1위 기록입니다. 고시엔에서 155km/h로 역대 공동 1위, 개인기록은 157km/h으로 고2 역대 1위인 안라쿠 토모히로나 며칠 전 157km/h를 기록한 사사키 로키보다 빠른 페이스이며, 심지어 160km/h를 찍은 오타니 쇼헤이도 앞지르는 수준이죠. 즉 라이벌이 역대 최고 수준의 강속구를 보유한 슈퍼 유망주인지라 주인공이 이길 각이 안 보이는 겁니다. 사토루가 등장한 이후 에이준은 줄곧 '너는 저녀석의 백업이다'라는 얘기를 듣게 됩니다만 어쨌든 만화를 보는 독자 입장에선 순순히 그걸 인정할 수가 없죠. 그렇다고 사토루를 넘고 에이준이 에이스가 된다? 그것도 이상합니다. 둘의 재능은 비교 불가능할 정도로 후루야 쪽이 압도적이거든요. 그래도 주인공 보정을 엄청나게 먹여서 꾸역꾸역 주인공에게 출장기회 주고 경험치 먹이면서 성장도 시켜주고, 주인공의 스탯은 엄청 훌륭하게, 후루야에게는 멘탈과 제구, 잔부상 문제를 줘서 실제 스터프보다 훨씬 나쁜 스탯을 줍니다만 이걸로 근본적인 문제가 해결되지는 않습니다. 프로도 아니고 아마추어 레벨에서 저 정도의 강속구 투수가 털려나간다는 건 있을 수 없는 일이거든요(물론 오타니라는 반례가 있긴 합니다만 오타니는 정말 공만 빠르지 투수로서 필요한 역량이 형편없는 미완의 대기였습니다. 근데 작중의 사토루는 이 정도로 형편없는 수준이 결코 아니고 오히려 센바츠에서 괴물 같은 퍼포먼스를 남겨버립니다). 설사 털려나간다고 하더라도 결국 에이스는 스터프 좋은 파이어볼러에게 밀어주는 경우가 대부분입니다. 단적으로 올해 서도쿄 준우승팀인 니치다이츠루가오카가 그랬고요. 사토루가 경쟁에서 밀려나려면 오타니처럼 제대로 던지지 못하게 만들던가(사실 타자로만 활약했던 오타니도 결국 고3 센바츠와 고시엔예선 후반부엔 선발로 던졌습니다) 사토루를 장기부상으로 만들어서 강제로 경쟁에서 탈락시키거나 아니면 에이준이 역시 비현실적인 캐릭터로 레벨업을 하는 수밖에 없습니다. 지금까지는 마지막 루트로 가려고 하는 거 같은데 사실 마지막 루트로 간다고 해도 사토루를 완전히 배제할 수는 없을테니 2015년의 도카이사가미가 오가사와라-요시다 원투펀치를 굴린 것처럼 원투펀치 구도로 가야겠죠. 근데 마운드를 내주기 미친듯이 싫어하는 주인공과 라이벌이 사이좋게 역할을 나눈다? 과연 이게 자연스러운 전개로 갈 수 있을지 현 시점에서는 꽤나 회의적입니다. 으르렁대던 라이벌이 주인공을 인정하고 2인자로 물러나게 연출하는 게 얼마나 어려운데요. 그래서 저는 이 만화가 2학년이 아니라 3학년까지, 3부로 이어지지 않을까 생각하고 있습니다. 차라리 라이벌이 다른 학교 선수였다면 딱 한 판, 그 순간만 악재가 터진다는 식으로 어찌 메워볼 수도 있을텐데 같은 팀이다보니 어떻게든 주인공이 라이벌을 상회하는 능력의 소유자가 되어야 하고, 여기서 무리수가 무리수를 낳고, 악순환이 이어지는 그림입니다. 조금만 라이벌을 약하게 만들었어도 훨씬 무난한 길이 있었을텐데 아쉽습니다. 그래도 사토루의 인기가 그렇게 많지 않기 떄문에 작품으로서의 사실성이 훼손되더라도 다수의 팬들은 그럭저럭 납득하고 주인공 에이준을 응원할지도 모르겠네요. 국내에서는 나무위키의 영향으로 에이준을 터무니없이 고평가하는 경우도 제법 있는 편이고요. 현 시점에서는 여름대회 에이스를 에이준이 먹는 걸로 갈지도 모르겠다 싶을 정도로 에이준을 밀어주는 편인데 팬들은 그걸 즐기는 거 같기도... 여담. 도쿄의 왕자 니치다이산은 올해 여름 전부터 3명의 출중한 2학년이 있는 걸로 유명했고, 실제로 2명이 고시엔 본선에서 던졌습니다. 당초 이노우에 히로키는 3학년을 제끼고 에이스로 활약하고 있었습니다만 봄에 부상을 당해 고시엔 본선이 되어서야 복귀했고, 결국 이번 가을 1번은 2학년 2순위였던 히로사와 유우가 차지했습니다. 하지만 이런 내용을 만화로 그리면 욕 무진장 먹겠죠.
