영화 인랑을 봤습니다. 원래 보자마자 바로 감상평을 써볼까 했는데 어떻게 써야 할까 고민하다가 막상 하루가 지나서야 올리네요. 원작이 있는 영화니까 글을 쓰기 전에 원작을 봤는가에 대해서 언급하자면 전 봤습니다. 영화 개봉에 맞춰서 챙겨본 건 아니고, 예전에 본 적이 있었습니다. 다만 꽤 오래 전에 나온 애니메이션이고, 막상 영화를 보기 전까지 자세한 내용이 기억 안 나더군요. 일단 원작과 비교할 수밖에 없을텐데, 영화는 대대적인 각색을 거쳐 완성되었습니다. 원작은 시간대부터 다르고 일본을 배경으로 하여 일본사에 기반을 두고 비튼 디스토피아를 꾸며낸 애니메이션이였습니다. 그래서 영화의 장소도 일본이었다면 문제될 게 없었겠지만, 영화는 한국이 배경이었으니 이런 선택은 지극히 옳았다고 생각합니다. 그러나 각색을 통해서 문제를 해결했는가 따진다면 전 아니라고 봐요. 디스토피아를 구축하기 위한 재료가 남북통일 문제인데 이건 그 자체로는 의미가 없어요. 영화의 핵심은 권력기관 간의 충돌이고, 남북통일 문제는 그러한 설정을 납득시킬 수 있는 불안한 시대상을 구축하기 위한 장치일 뿐이니까요. 그런데 그 이야기부터가 한국을 배경으로 한 영화에서 이질적일 수밖에 없어요. 왜냐하면 그것도 일본사에서 가져왔니까요. 제가 볼 땐 영화보다 더 과격한 설정으로 각색되었어야만 납득할 수 있는 소재였다고 봐요. 그럼 영화가 만족할만한 각색을 보여주는 데에는 실패했다고 친다면, 그래도 김지운 감독의 영화라면 화끈한 액션과 디스토피아에 어울리는 암울한 세상사만 보여주어도 충분했을거라고 봐요. 막상 그것도 애매해요. 총격전 위주의 액션은 만족스러워요. 김지운 감독이 한국 감독 중에서 총격전이 많이 나오고 잘 만든다고 생각하는데 왜 인랑을 영화화하고 싶었는지 알 것 같은 만족감이었습니다. 다만 액션을 뺴고 바라보면 나쁘진 않았지만, 좋지도 않았어요. 굳이 말하자면 아예 결말에 이르면 말하고자 하는 바가 확 달라지는데 제가 기대했던 건 달콤한 인생이었는데 막상 영화는 유머가 없는 반칙왕을 보고 나온 느낌이었네요. 그리고 소품에 대해서 간단히 논하자면 프로텍트 기어라는 강화복은 영화에서 매력적으로 연출되긴 합니다. 그것과 별개로 워낙 디자인이 고풍스럽고, 특히 머리만 보면 나치 독일을 안 떠올릴 수가 없어서 좀 그렇더군요. 톰 크루즈가 주연으로 나왔던 오블리비언을 보면 비행선부터 직접 들고 다니는 소총 한 자루까지 영화에 맞게 곡선적인 디자인으로 잘 꾸며져서 그것만으로 보는 맛이 있었는데 인랑은 프로텍트 기어가 워낙 중요한 소재라서 함부로 바꾸지 못하고 그냥 집어넣은 느낌이 납니다. 그런데 이건 영화의 완성도를 해칠 정도의 문제라곤 생각되지 않아요. 배우들의 연기에 대해서도 이야기해보면 밋밋해요. 영화에서 등장 인물 모두 하나 같이 메마르고 피폐해져야 할 것 같은데, 막상 다 촉촉하다고 해야 할까요? 배우보단 연출 문제에 가깝지 않나 싶어요. 정리하자면 김지운 감독 정도 되는 분이라면 관객 입장에서 기대치가 높을 수밖에 없고, 전 감독의 전작이 밀정이기까지 해서 단순히 액션보다도 심하게 말해서 비극적인 결말 빼곤 남는 게 없었던 원작보다 더 나은 영화가 되었으면 했는데 기대치를 충족시킬 정도는 아닌 것 같아요.
