물론 전 전선에서의 반격이었던지라 소련군의 역량을 넘어섰고 결국은 실패했던 - 으로 이야기를 잠깐 돌려야 할 것 같습니다. 1942년 5월, 길게 잡으면 청색 작전까지의 남부에서의 전투는 모든 발단이 이 1월의 공격으로 인해 발생한 나비효과라고 봐도 과언이 아닙니다. 우선 지도를 보시면, 척 봐도 벌써 북쪽이나 중부에서의 철도망보다 훨씬 오밀조밀함을 볼 수 있습니다. 물론 이 노선들 중에는 대조국전쟁 이후에 소련이 건설한 노선도 끼어 있습니다만, 큰 틀, 큰 맥락에서의 철도망은 거의 다르지 않습니다. 지도 가장 북쪽이 하리코프(Kharkov, 우크라이나 어로는 Kharkiv - 하르키우), 지도 남동쪽의 지저분해 보일 정도인 곳이 도네츠크(Donetsk)입니다. 유로마이단 사태 및 러시아군의 개입으로 엄청 시끌시끌한 바로 그 도네츠크죠. 그리고 서쪽에 글씨도 크게 드니프로(Dnipro)라고 쓰여 있는데, 여기가 바로 드네프로페트로프스크(Dnepropetrovsk)입니다. 우크라이나의 정치인이었던 그리고리 페트로프스키(Grigory Petrovsky)의 이름을 따서 드네프르 강의 페트로프의 도시, 그래서 드네프로페트로프스크라는 긴 이름이 된 것인데 2016년에 우크라이나가 소련이라는 과거를 아예 청산하겠다고 나서면서 페트로프라는 이름을 쏙 빼 버리고 드니프로만 남았죠. 아, 러시아에서는 드니프로를 드네프르라고 합니다. 하여간 철도망 = 보급망이었던 이 시기에 이런 철도지대가 얼마나 중요한지는 말할 필요가 없을 정도였죠. 더구나 도네츠크의 당시 이름은 스탈리노(Stalino)였는데, 이름에서 보다시피 스탈린이 자기 이름을 걸고 육성한 도시였습니다. 바로 이 일대를 놓고 양군의 치열한 전투가 벌어집니다. 북쪽에서의 치열한 사투에 비해 남쪽은 지난 바르바로사 작전 끝물에 소련군이 독일군을 미우스 강(Mius, 로스토프나도누의 서쪽에 있는 강) 너머로 밀어버린 이후 상대적으로 잠잠했는데, 1월 18일에 드디어 큰 변곡점이 나타납니다. 하리코프와 스탈리노 사이에 이쥼(Izyum)이라는 작은 도시가 있는데, 이 이쥼을 관통하는 도네츠 강(Donets) 너머 소련군이 약간의 교두보를 확보해 두고 있었거든요. 지난 청색 작전 연재에서 천왕성 작전 실행 당시 이야기했던 작은 교두보처럼 강 건너편에 소련군이 있었습니다. 그 교두보를 발판삼아서 삽시간에 밀고들어갔습니다. 소련군이 노린 지역은 발라클레야(Balakleya)와 슬라뱐스크(Slavyansk, 우크라이나 어로는 슬로뱐스크 : Slovyansk). 지도를 한 번 보시죠. 전투는 대략 이 측선을 바탕으로 진행되었다고 생각하시면 됩니다. 발라클레야는 북쪽으로 하리코프와 통하고, 슬라뱐스크는 서쪽으로 로조바(Lozova, 지도 남서쪽)와 통합니다. 이 로조바가 또 교통의 요지인 것이 남으로는 크림 반도의 세바스토폴이요 북으로는 하리코프에 서쪽으로는 드네프로페트로프스크와 폴타바(Poltava)인지라, 중~대규모의 도시로 다 통할 수 있어 훌륭한 전략적 교두보가 될 수 있는 곳이었거든요. 그래서 소련군도 1차 목표를 여기로 두고, 최종 목표를 드네프로페트로프스크로 두며 서진했습니다. 이 지역에서의 소련군의 공세는 상당히 빠른 편이었는데, 일 주일 만에 목표치의 절반 가량을 돌파해 버리고 하리코프의 남쪽이 소련군에게 노출되었습니다. 이렇게 되자 중부 집단군의 페도어 폰 보크는 아예 돌파지점 남쪽의 제17군과 제1기갑집단을 묶어서 클라이스트 집단군(Armeegruppe Kleist)로 편성해 버렸죠. 쉽게 말하면 작전의 효율성을 위해 제17군의 지휘권을 에발트 폰 클라이스트에게 넘긴 것입니다. 여기까진 좋았어요. 하리코프 코 앞에 굉장한 크기의 돌출부를 만들고 로조바까지 점령했습니다. 그런데 여기에서 소련군의 진격이 둔화되는데, 우선 연재 초에 말씀드렸던 지독한 강추위가 제대로 발목을 잡았습니다. 가뜩이나 공격 자체가 전 전선에서 이루어졌던 터라 소련군의 물자도 만만치 않게 딸리는 상황이었고(렌드리스가 효과를 보는 시기도 아니었습니다), 작전에 다수 투입된 기병군단은 병력이 충분하지 못했으며, 지속적인 전투를 벌일 상황이 아니었던 것이죠. 그래서 어째 기병의 투입 자체가 뭔가 제대로 계획된, 종심작전이론에 기반한 제파전술(소위 말하는 파상공세)이 아니라 축차투입이 되어 버렸습니다만... 뭐 그래도 성공은 성공이었죠. 로조바가 날아간 게 컸습니다. 중요 철도 결절점이라 하면 보급물자를 쌓아놓는 곳이라는 의미 아닙니까? 사통팔달(四通八達)의 물자 집적소가 넘어갔으니 그 철도망에 영향을 받는 다른 모든 철도망이 위태롭게 된 거죠. 그나마 슬라뱐스크에서 거의 200번의 공격을 1 : 5의 교환비로 싸우면서(독일군 전사 652명 + 부상병 1,663명, 소련군 손실 12,500명) 끝끝내 막아낸 덕에 우크라이나 동남부가 통째로 무너지는 사태는 막았습니다. 독일군도 반격을 시도했지만 지독한 추위 등으로 인해 공세는 영 신통치 않았고 여기에 라스푸티차가 끼얹어지면서 전선이 이대로 굳어집니다. 그렇게 5월까지 온 거죠. 이렇게 하리코프가 노출되자 소련군은 이 하리코프를 탈환하기 위한 작전을 구상하기 시작했습니다. 돌출부를 발판 삼아서 남쪽에서 공격해 올라가고, 북쪽에서 하리코프 방향으로 치고 내려와서 포위망을 만들면 하리코프는 간단히 함락시킬 수 있을 것이라 본 거죠. 이를 위해서 스타브카는 무려 64만 명의 병력을 준비합니다. 전차만 1,200대에 달했고, 야포 등 화력보조수단은 13,000개에 달했으며 비행기도 926대나 준비하는 등 최대한의 공세를 위해 있는 재산 없는 재산을 탈탈 털어모았습니다. 하리코프를 점령하면 도네츠크 일대의 독일군은 물론이고 하리코프 - 세브스토폴 측선에 있는 중요 공업도시인 자포로제(Zaporozhe, 현 자포리지아, Zaporizhia)까지 위험해집니다. 오늘날 우크라이나 제6의 도시인 자포로제는 로조바로부터 남쪽으로 180 km 떨어져 있었거든요. 그런데 여기에는 치명적인 문제가 있었는데, 우선 소련군이 독일군의 주공을 잘못 파악하고 있었습니다. 이미 4월경에 히틀러의 지령으로 청색 작전이 지시된 상황이었는데 소련군은 독일군이 모스크바를 노릴 것이라 판단하고 있었죠. 여기에 적의 발을 붙잡기 위한 가짜 공세에 필요한 병력의 수를 너무 적게 산출했고, 게다가 하필이면 질척거리는 라스푸티차가 이 해 유독 길었던 탓에 공세를 시작하기로 예정되었던 순간에 제대로 된 병력과 물자 집결이 이뤄지지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 공세는 개시되었고, 의외로 북쪽은 공세의 극초반 동안 굉장히 잘 풀려나갔습니다. 독일군 1개 보병사단을 포위망에 가둬버렸고, 상당히 빠른 속도로 진격해 나아갔죠. 그런데 여기서 티모셴코의 큰 실수가 터집니다. 공세 3일째 되는 날에 투입하기로 되어 있던 기병부대를 투입하지 않았는데요, 날씨가 영 아니었고 여기에 더해서 준비가 안 되었다는 이유였습니다. 그런데 바로 이 며칠 사이에 제6군을 지휘하고 있던 파울루스는(폰 라이헤나우는 1월 말에 심장마비로 사망) 몇 개 사단을 빼돌려서 북쪽을 틀어막아버렸고 남부 집단군 차원에서도 몇 개의 쌩쌩한 사단 - 특히 2개의 기갑사단 - 을 동원하여 진격해 오는 소련군을 카운터칠 준비를 마쳤습니다. 누가 봐도 하리코프가 위험한 상황이었던지라 히틀러도 즉시 (청색 작전에 동원할 병력을 제외하고) 남은 모든 병력을 끌어다가 하리코프에 지원했죠. 심지어 한창 남부에서 싸우던 폰 만슈타인의 항공부대도 차출했습니다. 북쪽에서 빼돌린 사단이 소련군의 오른쪽 측면을 공격하고 남쪽에서는 기갑 사단이 왼쪽 측면을 공략하자 졸지에 소련군은 양쪽에서 공격받는 처지가 되었고 그래서 중요한 순간에 에이스로 써먹어야 할 제3기병근위군단을 방어선 틀어막는데 사용하는 상황이 벌어지고 말았습니다. 결국 북쪽에서의 공격은 무위로 돌아갔고 상황은 오히려 공격 전보다 더 나빠져 버렸죠. 그런데 북쪽은 그나마 운이 좋은 편이었습니다. 다시 5월 12일의 지도를 보시면, 남쪽에서의 소련군의 공세 화살표 중 하나가 서쪽 방향으로 나선 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 하리코프와 드네프로페트로프스크를 잇는 중요 철도 결절점인 크라스노그라드(Krasnograd, 현 우크라이나의 크라스노흐라드 : Krasnohrad)를 향해 진격한 것인데, 북진할 소련군 제6군의 공격을 사전에 방어하기 위해서였죠. 헝가리의 제108사단도 뒤로 밀려나서 독일군 제6군과 하리코프, 그리고 발라클레야가 위험해졌는데, 여기에서 히틀러와 폰 보크가 대담한 결정을 내립니다. 사실 저 돌출부를 신경쓰고 있었던 것은 독일군도 마찬가지였던지라 장비와 물자와 병력을 남쪽에 집결시켜 두고 돌출부를 없애버리겠다는 작전을 구상하고 있었는데, 이게 바로 프레데리쿠스(Fredericus) 작전입니다. 그런데 작전 개시일이 5월 18일이었는데 갑자기 소련군이 5월 12일에 선제공격을 가한 셈이었던 거죠. 그 상황에서 파울루스가 북쪽에 손이 묶여버렸으니 보통 때라면 작전을 개시할 생각을 안 하는 게 정상인데, 아예 남쪽의 클라이스트 군집단에게 단독으로 프레데리쿠스 작전을 하루 당겨서 개시하라고 명령을 내린 것입니다. 그래서 5월 17일의 지도가 이렇게 난잡한 거에요. 하리코프 북쪽 - 돌출부 중앙 - 돌출부 남부에서 서로 다른 생각으로 움직이고 있었던 것이거든요. 이 카운터는 독일군이 제대로 한방 먹인 결과가 되었습니다. 여기에 결정타가 터지는데 프랑스에서 긴급하게 차출되어 온 제305보병사단이 완전 쌩쌩한 병력으로 방어선 틀어막는데 활용되면서 소련군의 진격이 둔화되었습니다. 거 왜 옛날 속담에 매미 잡는 사마귀 뒤를 참새가 노린다는 고사가 있는데 딱 그렇게 된 거죠. 그나마도 매미는 잡히지도 않았고. 이게 지금 지도가 좀 덜 나온 건데 남쪽에서 폰 클라이스트의 카운터 펀치가 제대로 먹혀들어가면서 드디어 포위망이 완성되었고, 포위망 내에 갇힌 소련군은 무려 4개 군이었습니다. 소련군 제6군, 제9군, 제38군 그리고 제57군. 물론 전부 다 포위된 건 아니긴 합니다만 이 포위망 안에 들어 있던 병력이 무려 20만 명이 넘었으니 가히 바르바로사 작전 초기에 입은 손실만큼이나 컸던 재앙이라 할 수 있습니다. 독일군의 손실은 고작 2만 명. 소련군은 역사가들에 따라서 좀 엇갈리긴 하는데 최소 24만 명이었으니 완벽한 독일군의 승리였던 셈입니다. 이 전투의 결과...가 좀 여럿 있습니다. 되짚지 않을 수 없네요. 우선 소련군은 비록 어마어마한 재앙으로 끝나버렸지만 계획된 공세가 가능함을 입증해 보였습니다. 전 전선에서 공격을 가하고 기회를 봐서 고속기동부대(기병, 전차부대 등)를 투입하여 전과를 확대한다는 종심작전이론으로의 완벽한 회귀를 보여주는 전투였죠. 여기서 얻은 교훈은 훗날 천왕성 작전에서의 엄청난 자산과 밑거름이 됩니다. 바꿔 말하면 여기에서 그렇게 말아먹은 덕에 천왕성 작전에서 대성공을 거두었으니 여기서의 공세가 없었다면...이라는 말이 나오는 건데... 역사에 만약이란 없죠. 확실한 것은 이 전투로 소련군은 엄청난 희생을 치르면서 값비싼 교훈을 손에 넣었다는 것입니다. 그리고 스탈린이 드디어 입을 다물었습니다. 주코프를 위시한 휘하 장성들의 의견을 들은 체도 않고 후퇴를 할 수 없다느니 적은 약해졌다느니 전 전선에서 반격을 해야 한다느니 하며 떠들었던 이 아마추어가 드디어 장성들의 의견을 수렴하고 귀를 기울이기 시작한 것이죠. 반면 독일군으로서도 대승을 손에 넣었습니다만... 이 결과가 독일군으로서는 자신의 능력을 심하게 믿게 되는 계기가 되었습니다. 무슨 소리냐면 적이 어떻게 공격을 해 와도 다 막아낼 수 있다는 생각에 무리한 작전을 입안하게 되는 한 원인이 되었다는 건데요, 이 때문에 안 그래도 빡셌던 청색 작전에서 집단군이 둘로 갈라져서 하나는 유전으로, 남은 하나는 스탈린그라드로 가는... 그런 나비효과가 된 거죠. 그리고 정말 중요한 것이, 청색 작전을 개시할 귀중한 시간과 물자와 병력을 잃었다는 것은 독일군으로서도 만만치 않은 손해였습니다. 이 모든 게 나중에 재앙이 되어 독일군으로 돌아가게 되죠. 작전과 작전 사이 7개월간 있었던 일에 대한 연재는 여기에서 끝납니다. 솔직히 이번 연재는 제가 지금까지 해 왔던 모든 연재 중 가장 힘들었던 연재였던 것 같습니다. 자기 스스로와의 싸움이 너무 고달팠어요. 변명의 여지 없는 게으름도 컸죠. 그래서 어째 1월에 연재를 시작하고 반 년이 걸려서야 간신히 마무리를 지었습니다. 공교롭게도 3~4월간 연재를 중단했는데 어째 딱 라스푸티차 기간이네요... 이대로 그냥 묻어버릴까 다시 시작할까를 꽤 고민했는데 그래도 다시 시작해 보자고 펜대를 들었고 결국 완결을 지어내니 최소한의 약속은 지킨 것 같아 다행입니다. 연재하면서 늘 들었던 생각은, 과연 내가 이 사실들을 제대로 이해하고 올바르게 설명하고 있는가에 대한 의문이었습니다. 참고하고 있는 전문서적의 수도 적은 편이고, 인터넷과 번역기에 의존해 가면서 자료를 찾고... 원래 이런 역사적 사실에 대한 해석글은 많은 수의 자료를 보고 서로 교차검증하면서 이것은 옳고 이것은 그르고 하는 식으로 옥석을 가리는 과정이 꼭 필요합니다. 솔직히 그 정도까지 했나...는 약간 의문이긴 합니다. 이건 중간에 연재를 중단하면서 들었던 두 가지 회의감 중 하나를 차지하고 있었습니다. 나머지 하나야 당연히 필력의 문제였고... 그래도 일단 내가 최대한 이해하고 상황에 맞게 설명하면서 곁가지를 붙이는 식으로, 내가 옳건 그르건, 비록 군사학도 전공하지 않은 아마추어라고 해도 해 보자는 식으로 다시 밀어붙였고 결국 종결까지 지었네요. 솔직히 독소전쟁의 경우 그 참상이 너무 잔혹하고, 상상할 수조차 없는 수많은 사람들이 죽고 다치고 사로잡혔던지라 함부로 드립을 쳐 가면서 글을 쓰기가 좀 부담스러웠거든요. 글이 전체적으로 무거웠던 이유가 그겁니다. 다음에는 꼭 독소전이 아니더라도 더 재미있는 글감을 찾아서 쓸 수 있도록 해 보겠습니다. 요즘 월드컵 기간인데 제가 또 지리덕후가 아닙니까. 어떤 글로든, 이번에는 즐거운 마음으로 각종 드립을 쳐 가며 글을 써 보고 싶네요. 아, 그리고 앞으로 글 제목에 적당한 사자성어를 찾는 것은 당분간 피하려고 합니다. 농담 안 하고 글 쓰는 시간이 4시간이면 그 중 사자성어 찾는 시간이 2시간이었습니다. 옆 동네에 제가 바르바로사 작전 연재를 시작한 것이 2년 전 여름이었습니다. 지금 보니 이미지 링크가 죄다 깨져 있어서 다시 수정할 생각을 하니 헛웃음만 나오는데(...) 그때 많은 분들이 추천해 주시고 했던 게 좋았던 것 같습니다. 그게 제가 두 달간의 침묵과 게으름 등을 이겨내고 다시 펜대를 잡은 또 하나의 중요한 원인이 되었습니다. 읽어 주시고 추천해 주시고 피드백과 의견을 주셨던 모든 분들께 깊은 감사를 드립니다.
