미국에서 자동차의 역사를 바꾼 차로 자주 소개되는 차가 하나 있습니다. 바로 포드사에서 만든 모델 T라는 차이지요. 이 차는 포드사에서 1908년에 처음으로 선 보였고 이후 1927년 생산이 중단될 때까지 포드사를 대표하는 차종으로서 엄청나게 많은 대수가 팔린 베스트셀러 카였습니다.  포드사의 모델 T... 이 모델 T는 이전의 차량들과는 좀 다른 철학에서 만들어진 차였습니다. 물론 모델 T가 생산되기 전에도 자동차는 생산되고 팔리고 있었습니다. 하지만 그때까지 자동차라고 하는 물건은 대중들이 보편적으로 접근할 수 있는 상품은 아니었다고 합니다. 모델 T가 출시되기 전까지만 해도 일단 차종을 떠나서 절대적인 자동차의 생산 대수가 많지가 않아서 자동차라는 물건 자체가 시장에 많이 풀리지가 않았고 그나마 가격도 비쌌기 때문에 중산층이 쉽사리 구입할 수 있는 상품이 아니었습니다. 하지만 포드의 모델 T는 포드사의 창업자 헨리 포드가 “웬만큼 급여를 받는 사람이라면 누구나 살 수 있는 차를 만들겠다.”는 신념하에 상당히 저렴한 가격에 출시가 되었기 때문에 자동차에 대한 접근성을 일반인들에게까지 크게 높여서 그 동안은 소수의 사람들에게만 열려 있었던 자동차라는 상품을 대중적인 상품으로 만드는 시초가 되었던 의미 있는 차이지요. 그리고 이렇게 비교적 저렴한 가격에 차가 팔릴 수 있었던 것은 최초로 “조립 라인”이라는 공정을 통해서 대량 생산이 가능해진 차였기 때문이었습니다. 이 모델 T의 출시로 공장에서 일하는 노동자도 시골에서 농사를 짓는 농부도 자동차라는 것을 소유할 수 있게 되었고 진정한 미국의 자동차 문화는 결국 이 모델 T로부터 시작되었다고 봐도 과언이 아니라고 합니다. 한 마디로 포드의 모델 T는 실용성과 대중성을 극대화해서 자동차 문화의 지평을 넓힌 차라는 것입니다. 그런데 이런 모델 T와는 철학이 아주 다른 차종이 하나 있습니다. 바로 제너럴 모터스에서 출시한 라살(LaSalle)이라는 차입니다. 이 차는 포드의 모델 T가 단종 되었던 1927년에 처음으로 시장에 선 보였던 차인데 여러모로 포드의 모델 T와는 대척점에 섰던 차종입니다.  제너럴 모터스 캐딜락 라살...(웬지 고급져(?) 보인다...) 우선 이 차는 최초로 한 사람이 설계를 해서 만들어진 차량입니다. 그러니까 태생부터가 일단 고급지다고(?) 볼 수 있겠습니다. 이 차를 설계했던 사람은 할리 얼(Harley Earl)이었는데 얼은 "하나로 모든 사람들에게 다 맞는" 차가 아니라 그 사람이 신분에 걸맞고 과시욕을 충족시켜줄 수 있는 남들과 차별화 된 "멋"이 있는 차를 만들고자 했습니다. 얼은 자동차라는 게 단순히 나를 목적지로 이동시키고 시장에 가서 장본 거 싣고 오는 용도로서가 아니라 차를 보면 그 차의 소유주를 특정 짓게 할 수 있는 무언가가 있어야 한다고 믿었습니다. 그런 그의 철학을 바탕으로 해서 만들어진 차가 바로 GM에서 GM의 여러 차종 가운데 하나가 아니라 독자적으로 브랜드화해서 생산한 라살이었던 것이지요. 실용성이나 멋이냐 하는 것은 지금도 자동차를 구매할 때 사람들이 고려하는 중요한 고려 요소들 가운데 하나라고 볼 수 있겠습니다. 물론 요즘에 나오는 차들은 적어도 겉으로는 이 둘을 다 충족시킨다고 광고들을 하지 어느 한쪽을 극단적으로 추구한다고 하지는 않지요. "우리 차는 멋대가리는 하나도 없지만 연비만큼은 끝내준다!"거나 "휘발유는 미친 듯이 먹어대지만 길거리에 끌고 나가면 눈길 하나는 확실히 붙잡는다!"는 식으로 광고를 하는 차는 없잖습니까?...--;;; 하지만 20세기 초반의 미국에서는 그런 극단성이 통용이 되던 시기였던 것 같습니다. 한쪽은 철저한 실용성을 바탕으로 누구나 살 수 있는 차를 만들었고 다른 한쪽은 차를 통해서 "정체성"을 보여줄 수 있는, "누구나" 타는 차가 아니라 바로 "내가" 타는 차를 선보였다는 점이 참 흥미롭습니다.
