데미얀스크가 뭔가 결정적으로 중요한 지점이라고 하기에는 애매한 점이 많죠. 모스크바는 동남쪽 방향으로 가면 되기는 하는데 어차피 전선이 이 일대에 형성된 이상 차후 동진을 노리려면 차라리 스타라야 루사(Staraya Russa)를 주요 거점으로 하여 철길을 따라 동진을 노리는 편이 낫고, 남쪽의 토로페츠(Toropets) 방면으로 도로망이 나 있는 것도 아니라서 굳이 전략적으로 중요한 거점이라고까지 표현하기는 어렵습니다. 더구나 지속적인 전투원 손실 및 보급의 부족으로 인해 방어적인 상황을 강요당하고 있던 독일군으로서는 사실 데미얀스크보다는 스타라야 루사가 방어가 훨씬 용이했죠. 당연히 그건 스타라야 루사 북쪽의 호수 때문이었고... 한 마디로, 굳이 나서서 포위망을 자처할 만큼 독일군의 상황이 좋은 것도 아닌데 불필요하게 포위당했다는 이야기가 됩니다. 이유야 뭐 짐작하시겠지만 히틀러 이놈 때문이었죠. 보헤미아의 상병이었던 히틀러에게는 후퇴 자체가 겁쟁이들이 싸우기 싫어서 하는 헛소리로 들렸는지도 모릅니다. 아니면 후퇴를 하는 것 자체로 자신의 정치적인 위신이 깎인다고 생각했거나요. 그럴 만도 한 게 히틀러의 성공과 높은 지지율은 라인란트 합병 이래로 넓어져만 가는 독일의 영토가 뒷받침하고 있던 터라서, 이런 식으로 영토를 잃는 것 자체가 그 스스로에게서는 체면과 지지기반이 깎이는 일이라서 후퇴불가 현지사수를 남발했을지도 모릅니다. 아무튼 정치적으로는 그렇다쳐도, 군사적으로는 참으로 어리석은 일이었죠. 독일의 동맹국인 일제의 치하에서 신음하던 우리로서야 이런 히틀러의 삽질이 대단히 고마운 일이지만. 지도를 하나 더 볼게요. 이전에 모델의 9군이 르제프에서 방어하고 있을 때의 지도입니다. 1월 9일에 모델의 9군을 박살내기 위해 토로페츠 방면으로 후방에서 날뛰던 군대라고 설명드린 바 있었죠. 그것도 맞는데, 덤으로 딸린 목표가 있었습니다. 바로 북부 집단군 휘하의 제16군을 포위 섬멸해버리자는 심산이었던 거죠. 그러니까 토로페츠-홀름 방면으로의 공세를 퉁해서 독일군 제9군과 제16군을 갈라치기하고, 르제프에서는 제9군을, 그리고 바로 이 데미얀스크에서는 제16군을 섬멸하자는 계획이었던 겁니다. 깡도 좋게 여기저기에서 전방위적인 공세를 취한 거죠. 레닌그라드, 모스크바, 그리고 그 사이의 데미얀스크에. 집중해서 셋 중 하나만 할 것이지... 아무튼 이 토로페츠-홀름 공세는 꽤나 성공적이었고 그래서 제16군과 제9군이 갈라집니다. 이 상황에서 당연히 스타브카는 돌출되기 시작한 제16군을 손쉬운 먹잇감으로 보고 어떻게 돌출부를 잘라먹을지 작전을 수립합니다. 당연히 이런 꼴을 눈 뜨고 볼 리가 없는 북부 집단군의 사령관 빌헬름 폰 레프가 1월 중순에 데미얀스크의 독일군에게 퇴각명령을 내리는데, 이걸 히틀러가 번복해 버립니다. 그리고 전기간 내내 죽어라 부딪혔던 폰 레프의 사직서를 마침내 히틀러가 수리하면서 1월 18일에 게오르그 폰 퀴흘러가 북부 집단군의 사령관으로 부임하게 되는 것이죠. 이것은 지난 글에서도 이야기한 바 있습니다. 한편으로 소련군은 이 1월 막바지에 전열을 가다듬고 공세를 위하여 일부 병력을 재배치했죠. 그래서 1월 하반기는 양군이 서로 잠잠하게 넘어갔습니다. 데미얀스크 포위전은 문자 그대로 포위망 형성의 정석이었습니다. 돌출된 부분의 남북에서 마치 음식을 깨물듯이 공격한다. 이런 장면은 독일군이 하도 많이 보여줬고 앞으로 소련군도 많이 보여줄 것이며 고대로부터 내려오던 포위섬멸전의 전형적인 패턴이기 때문에 이제는 설명할 필요조차 없겠군요. 다만 지도를 보시면 서쪽으로 화살표가 좀 나 있는 것을 보실 수 있는데 포위망이 만들어지면 일부는 포위망의 독일군을 녹여버리고 일부는 서진하여 포위망의 갭을 넓히는 동시에 북쪽의 류반에서 한창 서쪽으로 진격할 아군의 조공 역할을 한다 - 이런 계획을 세웠던 모양입니다. 아 예, 어련하시겠어요... 중부 집단군도 제대로 소화 못 할 거면서, 그리고 보급 문제도 제대로 해결 못 할 거면서 대책없는 낙관론이라니요. 그나마 이쪽은 도로와 철도가 그런대로 여기저기 깔려서 전번에 연재했던 류반 공세보다는 덜하지만 그렇다고 근본적인 지형 문제가 해결되는 건 아니었습니다. 숲과 늪지대라는 악몽은 여전했죠. 그나마 겨울철이라 늪이 다 얼어붙어서 공세가 가능했죠. 아무튼 스타라야 루사가 이 때 같이 공격을 받았는데 독일군이 사수에 성공하면서 뭔가 분위기가 묘해졌습니다만, 어쨌든 주 목표는 데미얀스크 포위망 제작 및 섬멸이었으니 굳이 스타라야 루사를 못 탈환했다고 작전 전체가 망가지지는 않았습니다. 하여간 포위망은 어찌저찌 완성되었고, 이렇게 되자 골치가 아파 오는 쪽은 독일군이었습니다. 뭐 포위망 및 그 안에 갇힌 병력의 규모가 작아서 별 손실 없었다 하고 퉁치면 모르겠는데 포위망에 걸려든 독일군은 무려 10만, 이 정도 병력에 대한 정보를 숨기는 건 문자 그대로 불가능이었죠. 무조건 구해내야 하는 입장이었습니다. 여기에 히틀러의 망상이 또다시 발목을 잡았는데, 아 글쎄 이 히틀러가 차후에 모스크바를 공격할 교두보로 활용해야 한답시고(...) 후퇴불가 현지사수를 줄창 주장했던 탓에 국방군의 장군들만 양쪽에 끼어서 이러지도 저러지도 못하는 상황이 된 겁니다. 이거는 여담인데 진중근 중령님이 국내에 번역해 놓은(번역 당시 대위) 칼 하인츠 프리저의 명저 《전격전의 전설》에 보면 히틀러의 스당에 대한 집착이 순전히 아마추어적이었으며 우연에 의한 것이었다고 독하게 까는 장면이 꽤 나오거든요. 히틀러가 데미얀스크에 집착했던 것도 같은 맥락이라 볼 수도 있겠습니다. 그러니까 이게 히틀러가 무슨 천재적인 발생을 바탕으로 해서 여기에 병력이 있어야 차후 모스크바가 어쩌고저쩌고(공략을 할 수 있는 능력이 되는지는 차치하고서라도 공략이 개시된다는 전제 하에 말입니다) 한 것이 아니라, 그냥 자기 생각에 따라 데미얀스크를 지키라고 한 것 같다는 말이죠. 병사들의 싸울 의지도 지키고, 차후 교두보도 확보하고 뭐 그런 느낌? 문제는 병사들의 싸울 의지가 퇴로가 없다고 어디서 생겨나는 것도 아니고, 교두보로 적합한 위치는 더더욱 아니었다는 거죠(위에서 언급한 바 있습니다). 배수진의 고사가 있기는 합니다만 그것도 정도껏이지... 아무튼 일이 이렇게 되자 탈출도 안되겠다, 내부 병력은 자꾸 위험해져만 가고 뭔가 방법을 찾아야 했는데, 뜻밖에도 영국 항공전 내내 털려대서 체면을 와장창 구겼던 독일 공군이 대활약을 했습니다. 지금의 라트비아와 러시아의 경계선에 있는 프스코프(Pskov)에서 발진한 항공기가 수송물자를 들고 데미얀스크에 착륙해서 부상병을 실어 다시 프스코프로 귀환하는, 바로 공중수송이었죠. 이게 정말 뜻밖에도 초대박을 친 겁니다. 물론 여기에는 상당한 운이 따랐습니다. 일단 이에 대응해야 할 소련군 공군이 지리멸렬 상태였고, 날씨도 무진장 좋았으며, 결정적으로 포위망 내에 제대로 된 비행장이 있엇습니다. 셋 중 하나라도 없었으면 실패하고도 남았겠죠. 이러고도 독일군은 사용 가능한 제1공군대(Luftflotte 1, 야전군급 스케일) 거의 전부를 탈탈탈탈 털어넣어야 했고, 손실도 상당히 컸습니다. 252대의 수송기가 날아갔다고 하는데, 차후에 독일군이 스탈린그라드에서 손실을 인정했던 수송기가 266대였다고 하니(소련측 주장은 600대 이상 격추) 하여간 손해가 막심한 건 확실했습니다. 하긴 멀쩡히 소련군이 눈 시퍼렇게 뜨고 감시하는 지역 위로 적의 수송기가 날아간다는데 그럼 그걸 보고 어디 손수건 흔들며 환영하겠습니까? 대공포로 환영하지... 그리고 소련군이라고 데미얀스크 포위망을 눈 뜨고 녹기만 기다리고 있던 것도 아니라서, 공수부대를 투입해 가면서 점령하려 애를 썼습니다. 이게 2월 15일 ~ 25일 사이의 일. 그런데 공수부대는 별반 뭘 하지도 못하고 엄청난 피해만 본 채 그대로 녹아버렸고, 이건 이후 스탈린이 공수부대에 별로 신경을 안 쓰는 - 정확히 말하면 공수부대의 사용 자체를 꺼리는 - 원인이 되죠. 양군을 괴롭혔던 것은 2월이 되면서 점차적으로 풀려 가는 날씨였습니다. 날씨가 좋고 기온이 올라가서 눈이 녹으면 뭐가 나오냐... 라스푸티차죠. 그리고 어디까지나 공수작전도 하루 이틀이지 천년만년 비행기를 띄울 수는 없는 노릇이었기 때문에 안쪽과 바깥쪽 양쪽에서 포위망을 찢어버리는 전략을 세우게 되고, 이게 먹힙니다. 물론 여기에도 공군의 역할이 컸습니다. 가용 근접항공지원기와 폭격기가 죄다 이 전역으로 몰려들어갔거든요. 이렇게 될 때까지 포위망을 좁히지 못하고 소련군의 진격과 공세가 더뎠던 것은 근본적으로 지형상의 문제와 보급 문제가 같이 터져버렸기 때문입니다. 아무리 인구가 많은 소련이라지만 병력이 뭐 실시간으로 충원됩니까? 아니죠. 병력과 물자의 손실과 보충 사이에는 항상 텀이 있게 마련입니다. 그런데 이번 소련군에게 있어서 되도 않는 전 전선에서의 무리한 공세로 인해 이러한 보급 문제가 소련군의 큰 골칫덩이가 되었고, 결과적으로 어쩌면 손쉽게 섬멸했어야 할 데미얀스크 포위망조차도 섬멸하지 못하고 실패로 돌아간 것입니다. 그렇게 이 데미얀스크 포위전은 독일군, 정확히는 독일 공군의 승리로 갈무리됩니다. 물론 그렇다고 히틀러가 데미얀스크에 병력을 박아두라는 명령이 철회된 건 아니라서 이들은 1943년 2월까지 이런 좁은 틈을 바탕으로 보급을 주고받으며 뻗대고 있었습니다. 가뜩이나 늘어진 전선으로 인해 가용 병력이 줄어서 고심하던 독일군에게 결코 좋은 소리가 나올 리 없는 구상이었죠. 게다가 이 과정에서 입은 독일 공군의 손실이 커서 리처드 오버리의 경우 아예 피로스의 승리로 규정해버리더군요. 그리고 이 데미얀스크에서의 공방전은 히틀러에게 있어서 엄청나게 잘못된 교훈을 하나도 아니고 둘씩이나 남겼는데, 하나는 다들 짐작하셨다시피 후퇴불가 현지사수 명령으로 전선이 유지되었다는 강력한 믿음이었고(더구나 르제프에서도 비슷한 일이 벌어져서 이제 이에 대한 히틀러의 확신은 아예 맹종 수준이 되었습니다), 또 하나는 설령 이러한 포위망이 생겨도 충분히 독일 공군이 보급할 수 있다는 믿음이었습니다. 물론 스탈린그라드에서 문자 그대로 박살이 났던 것은 괴링의 되도 않는 호언장담이 큰 영향을 끼친 결과이기도 했습니다만, 근본적으로 그게 가능하다고 믿었으니까 히틀러도 작전을 실행했던 거죠. 일종의 의도하지 않은 큰 그림이 된 셈인데... 소련군으로서는 전화위복이라고 해야 할지도 모르겠습니다. 이 데미얀스크 포위전을 위해 잃어버린 병사의 수(부상자 포함)가 독일군 5만, 소련군 25만이라 소련군의 입장에서도 재앙 맞기는 합니다만. 결국 소련군은 되도 않는 일에 매달린 덕분에 무모하게 여러 전선에서 지나치게 낙관론적인 작전을 펴다가 전쟁을 조금이라도 빨리 종결할 수 있는 기회를 놓치고 일을 제대로 그르쳤고, 이걸 보고 또 자기 능력에 확신을 가진 히틀러는 얼마 안 가서 되도 않는 일에 매달리게 되는 것이죠. 참으로 아이러니한 장면입니다. 데미얀스크 포켓은 이렇게 마무리되었습니다. 이제 두 군데 남았군요. 세바스토폴과 하리코프. 제2차 하리코프 전투가 분량이 진짜 애매해서 아마 두 차례 정도 글을 더 쓰고 연재가 마무리될 듯 합니다. 마감날에 쫓기는 기분이 드니 확실히 키보드에 손이 가긴 가는군요. 어떻게든 7월 5일 전에는 끝내야 75주년을 맞으니...
