* 본문 중에는 <머니볼>을 비롯하여 읽는 데에 주의를 요합니다. 특히 0번 항목은 결말까지의 플롯을 써놓은 것이니 스포일러를 피하시려는 분들은 필히 피해가시기 바랍니다.  0. <머니볼>의 줄거리는 다음과 같습니다. 1) 02시즌, 이전 시즌 전력의 핵심들이 대거 빅마켓 팀으로 이탈하면서 스몰마켓 팀인 오클랜드는 위기에 봉착하게 됩니다. 그러나 구단주는 야망이 없고 스카우트진을 비롯한 스태프들은 인습적이고 전통적입니다. 2) 오클랜드의 단장인 빌리 빈은 전력 공백을 커버하기 위해 애틀랜타 브레이브스로 가서 트레이드 협상을 진행하던 도중, 피터 브랜드라는 경제학을 전공한 야구 통계 덕후와 만나게 되고, 그의 선수 평가 기법에 강한 인상을 받고 오클랜드 팀 개혁의 실마리를 얻게 됩니다. 이에 빌리 빈은 피터 브랜드의 세이버 매트릭스에 의거하여 팀을 리빌딩하는데, 그로부터 기존의 스태프들과 갈등과 마찰이 발생합니다. 3) 진통과 난산 끝에 빌리 빈은 자신의 구상대로 팀을 만들어냅니다만, 생각과는 달리 연패의 늪에 빠지며 극도의 부진을 보입니다. 이에 빌리 빈은 트레이드 및 선수 구조조정을 통해 팀을 재건합니다. 이 조치는 결실을 거둬, 오클랜드의 성적은 평균회귀하여 급기야는 아메리칸리그 최다 연승 기록인 20연승을 작성하게 됩니다. 4) 모든 것이 장밋빛으로 끝나지는 않습니다. 오클랜드는 플레이오프 진출에는 성공하지만 다시금 패배를 당하며 월드시리즈 진출에 실패하지요. 자신이 한 바에 대해 회의하는 빌리 빈에게 피터 브랜드가 진루에 트라우마가 있는 발 느린 포수가 홈런을 친 영상을 보여주며 그가 엄청난 성공을 거두었음을 암시합니다. 1. 일단 <머니볼>은 픽션입니다. 리얼이 아니죠. 먼저, 작중에서는 02시즌에 제이슨 지암비, 자니 데이먼, 이슬링하우젠이 빠져나가면서 오클랜드가 엄청난 위기를 맞은 것처럼 표현하지만, 사실 그 정도는 아니었지요. 팀 허드슨, 배리 지토, 마크 멀더 3인을 중심으로 하는 투수진은 단단했으며, 차베스나 다이, 테하다 등이 잔류해있던 타선 역시 경시할 수준은 아니었습니다. 애초에 두 시즌 연속 플레이오프에 올라갔던 팀이면 약팀일 리가 없니다. 또한, 작중에서는 빌리 빈이 우연히 피터 브랜드라는 세이버 매트리션을 만나서 머니볼의 아이디어를 얻은 것처럼 묘사했지만, 이미 오클랜드는 페이롤을 감당할 수 없게 된 90년 초반부터 스몰마켓에 위치한 자신들의 실정에 맞게 저평가된 스텟과 선수들을 기반으로 이득을 차리는 야구를 해왔지요. 그밖에, 아트 하우 감독이나 그래디 퓨슨은 세이버 매트릭스를 이해하지 못하고 빌리 빈의 개혁에 반발하는 무지한 꼰대들로 그려지지만, 실제로는 전혀 그렇지 않았다고 하지요. 이외에도 디테일한 부분에서 사실과 다른 사항들은 여럿 있습니다. 이 모두는 영화 상의 흥미를 위해 각색된 것입니다. 그렇다고 해서 이것이 비판거리가 되지는 않습니다. 물론 현실은 픽션을 초월한다든가 각본 없는 드라마와 같은 식으로 현실 그 자체가 더 큰 설득력을 줄 때도 있지만, 대개의 경우 현실은 누군가의 목적에 의해 진행되는 것이 아니기에 모호하고 일관적이지 않으며 우연의 다발로 결합되어 있습니다. 그러니 창작자의 명확한 의도 하에 직조되고 창조되는 모순없는 픽션이 때로는 더 많은 것을 말해줄 수 있는 것입니다. 진수의 정사삼국지보다 나관중의 삼국지연의가 예술로서는 비교할 가치도 없이 훨씬 훌륭하듯이 말이지요. 배넷 밀러의 연출과 애런 소킨의 각본 하에서는 말할 나위도 없는 것이고요. 2. 많은 이들이 <머니볼>을 탁월한 스포츠물, 야구 영화로 꼽곤 합니다. 하지만 생각해보면 <머니볼>은 야구 영화치고는 상당히 이질적입니다. 우리가 알고 있는 야구 드라마를 떠올려봅시다. 터치, H2, 크로스 게임 같은 아다치 미츠루의 작품들이나 까치 시리즈 같은 것 말이죠. 주인공은 히어로고 강타자 혹은 에이스고, 팀은 가족적이지만 주인공이 없으면 안 돌아가는 <혈맹적인 오합지졸>이고, 주인공이 부재한 상황에서 핀치에 몰리고, 히어로로서 주인공이 귀환하여 경기를 전복하죠. 실상 주인공이 다 한 셈이지만 모두가 위 아 더 월드를 이루며 하나 되어 승리를 만끽하고 해피엔딩으로 끝나면서 휴먼 드라마를 연출합니다. 물론 거인의 별 같은 괴작도 있기는 하지만 일반적으로는 그렇죠.  * 이런 것만 생각해보더라도 그렇지요. 그러나 <머니볼>은 이러한 기존의 스포츠 드라마의 패턴을 따라가지 않습니다. 일단 빌리 빈부터가 그렇습니다. 빌리 빈은 보통은 악당으로 등장해야 정상인 캐릭터이지요. 중심인물들의 순정과 낭만을 짓밟는, 몰인정하고 탐욕스러운 최종보스가, 목가적인 세계를 짓밟으려는 음모를 획책하고 갑질을 하다가 궁극적으로는 주인공에 의해 관광 당하는 식의 패턴은 클리셰 축에도 끼치 않는 진부한 것입니다. 예컨대 개구리 왕눈이의 투투나 심슨 가족의 번즈 같이 말입니다. 야구물에서는 H2의 시로야마 감독이 대표적이겠지요. 이런 인물들은 주동인물들이 결말에 가서 위 아 더 월드를 외치게 해줄 안티테제에 불과한 것이 보통입니다. 그런데 <머니볼>의 경우, 보통은 악당이어야 할 빌리 빈이라는 인물이 주인공이고, 주인공이어야할 인물들은 이 악당의 장기말일 뿐입니다. 위 아 더 월드를 함께 외쳐야할 동료들에 해당하는 감독과 스카우트들은 빌리 빈의 구조조정 대상에 불과하며, 선수들은 언제든지 교환 가능한 상품일 따름이지요. 이 사이에서 플레이어들의 유대나 협력, 단결 등의 공동체적 가치, 야구의 낭만과 같은 로맨틱, 휴머니즘 등은 상실됩니다. 그저 과학과 수학과 계량과 경영 효율성에 의한 구조개혁과 대수술이 강조됩니다.   * 따지고 보면 이 인물들이나 빌리 빈이나 하는 짓은 거기서 거기입니다? 따라서 <머니볼>은 단순히 기존의 야구 드라마의 공식을 전복시키는 선에서 그치지 않습니다. 나아가 야구 그 자체와 인간에 대한 부정으로까지 이어지지요. 단적인 예로, 작중의 빌리 빈은 야구를 보지 않습니다. 경기를 직접 보고 얻은 자신의 인식과 경험과 판단은 오류로 가득찬 것이기에 객관적인 평가를 흐릴 수 있기 때문입니다. 빌리 빈의 입장에서 볼 때, 야구는 자신의 관찰을 통해 이해할 수 있는 것이 아니며, 오로지 통계와 수치만이 진실에 접근할 수 있는 수단이므로, 스카우트들이나 감독들처럼 야구를 수십 년 동안 보고 고민하고 탐구해온 현장 전문가들의 경험과 직관은 그저 객관성이 결여된 억견일 뿐입니다. 이러한 현장 전문가들의 판단을 부정한다는 것은 곧 야구에 대한 인간의 자율적인 판단과 인지와 경험 자체를 부정한다는 것이고, 이것은 기실 인간 자체를 부정하는 것과 다를 것이 없습니다. 빌리 빈의 관점에서 인간은 스스로의 힘으로는 아무 것도 인지할 수 없는 무력한 존재인 것입니다. "넌 항상 말하지. '아드님은 재질이 있어요. 전 보면 압니다' 그러고서는 모르잖아."라는 대사에서 집약적으로 드러나 있지요. 빌리 빈의 이러한 현실 인식은 자기 자신에게도 적용됩니다. 경영자나 관리자, 감독, 코치 등이 주인공인 작품들을 떠올려봅시다. 현역 시절에 자신이 이루지 못한 것이 있는 인물이 등장한 다음, 자신과 지극히 닮은 선수를 만나게 되고, 선수의 성취 및 그와의 인간적인 결속을 통해서 대리만족하고 영생하게 되거나, 혹은 이를 성취하지 못하는 비극을 맞닥뜨리거나 하는 것이 일반적인 패턴입니다. 결말이 해피하든 배드하든, 핵심은 과거의 실패에 대한 미련과 이로부터 나오는 대리만족 및 인간적인 교감에 있지요. <밀리언 달러 베이비>와 같은 것이 대표적이죠. 그에 반해 빌리 빈은 과거에 대해 미련을 가지지 않습니다. 대리만족을 꾀하지도 않지요. 빌리 빈은 깔끔하게 자기 부정하고 가면서 감상에 빠질 여지를 제거해버립니다. 젊은 시절의 자신은 성공할 싹수가 없었다고 말이지요. 모호하게나마 엿보였던 빌리 빈의 내적 갈등은 피터 브랜드와의 통화 한 통으로 정리되어 버립니다. 자신의 꿈을 대신 실현시켜줄 유망주에 대한 열망은 찾아볼 수 없으며, 자신의 젊은 날은 그저 헛짓거리 한 셈으로 치부되지요. 이는 상당히 극기적이고 자기부정적입니다. 야구를 부정하고 야구인들을 부정하고 인간을 부정한 데에 이어, 나아가 과거의 자신도, 현재의 감정도, 모조리 부정하는 것이지요. 너무나도 거침이 없는 터라 마치 터미네이터2의 T-800만큼이나 단호하게 느껴지죠. 이 점에서 빌리 빈은 일반적인 스포츠 드라마의 히어로형 주인공들과는 궤를 달리한다고 할 수 있겠습니다. 굳이 말하자면 다크 히어로라고 할 수 있지요. <다크 나이트>의 배트맨처럼 말입니다. 실제로 <다크나이트>의 배트맨이나 <머니볼>의 빌리 빈이나 결말에 가서는 박해받는 처지이기는 매한가지죠. 이렇듯, <머니볼>은 야구를 부정하고 나아가 인간 그 자체를 부정하는 것을 소재로 다루고 있는 셈이지요. 기존의 야구 드라마가 휴머니즘을 통속적으로 소비하면서 우리 모두 인간임을 과시한다면, <머니볼>은 우리 모두 기계가 되어야 한다고 역설하는 주인공에 초점을 맞춥니다. 따라서 <머니볼>은 야구 영화라기보다는 오히려 사회과학적인 SF 영화라고 할 수 있습니다. "과학이 미래에 우리에게 무엇이 될 것인가?", "경영학이 과학이 된다는 것은 어떤 의미인가?", "야구가 학으로 정립될 경우 어떤 결과를 낳을 것인가?"라는 화두를 던져주고 있는 것이죠. 마치 <가타카>나 <마이너리티 리포트> 같은 작품이 그렇듯 말입니다. 물론 딸의 노래나 선수들을 케어하는 빌리 빈의 모습 등의 드라마적 요소, 오클랜드의 20연승이라는 실화의 힘이 관객들을 감동시키지만, 그것은 관객들을 현혹시키기 위한 낭만성일 뿐, 곁가지를 쳐내고 핵심만을 추려보면 지극히 냉정하고 차가운 영화입니다. 지극히 비인非人적이고 몰가치적이죠. 이렇게 메시지만을 하드보일드하게 서술하면 잔혹하고 살벌한 비극적인 현실이 드러날 테고, 관객들은 이를 감내하기 어렵기 때문에, 드라마적인 요소를 중간중간 넣어 영화의 섬뜩한 뒷맛을 느끼지 못하도록 희석시킨 것입니다. 흥미로운 것은, 애런 소킨의 각본에 의해 윤색된 빌리 빈의 포장을 벗겨내면 빌리 빈의 세계관이 내포하고 있는 폭력성이 명백하게 드러납니다만, 그럼에도 불구하고 이 영화를 본 사람 중 아무도 빌리 빈을 비난하지 않는다는 것입니다. 만약 일반 기업체가 배경이고 빌리 빈 같은 사장이 나오고 기존의 노동자들을 나태하고 타성에 젖었으며 비합리적인 방식을 답습하는 개혁의 대상으로 묘사하고, 경영 효율성을 역설했다면, 이 영화는 큰 비난을 받았을 것입니다. 경영 효율과 구조조정과 고용 유연화라는 이름으로 스포츠 노동자의 삶을 위협하는 더러운 자본가 신자유주의자라는 이야기가 나왔어야 정상일 지도 모릅니다. 그리하여 다르덴 형제의 <내일을 위한 시간>이나 <로제타> 같은 영화와 크게 비교되었겠지요. 하지만 실제로는 그렇지 않았습니다. 영화 상에 브래드 피트가 분한 빌리 빈은 매력적인 인물로 평가받았고, 이것이 실제의 빌리 빈에 대한 호평으로도 이어졌지요. 매우 기묘한 일이지요.  * 뭐, 인물 자체가 좋기는 한데; 여기서 스포츠의 특성을 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 꽤나 진보적이고 반체제적이라고 하는 인물들도 스포츠 판에 대해서는 다른 접근법을 쓰곤 하죠. 훨씬 관대해집니다. 여러 가지 이유가 있겠지만 스포츠의 목적은 승리입니다. 이윤이라는 기업체의 목적에 비해 훨씬 간단명료하고 직관적이고 원초적이며 본능적입니다. 게다가 자극에 따른 반응은 즉각적이고요. 승패가 즉각적으로 매일 매주 결정이 됩니다. 모두가 방침에 따른 결실을 즉물적으로 인지할 수 있지요. 어항 같이 투명합니다. 이렇게 흑백이 분명한 세계에서는 냉혹하고 인정사정없는 칼질이 지극히 당연한 합리적인 조치로 보이는 것이지요. 마치 군을 운용하는 사령관의 용병술과 같이 말입니다. 인간이 장기말이 되고 결정권자가 부하를 수족처럼 부리는 것이 도덕적으로 당연해보이도록 포장하기가 용이하다는 것이지요. 웹툰 <송곳>의 사장이 마트 직원들을 유물론적으로 다루는 것은 혐오스러운 일이지만, 브래드 피트가 스카우트에게 망신을 주고 감독의 수족을 잘라버리는 것은 간지나는 일인 것입니다. 3. 그러나 <머니볼>은 보다 더 매력적일 수 있었습니다. 위에서 언급했듯이, 빌리 빈은 초반부에 이미 자기부정을 끝낸 상태로 산뜻하게 머니볼 시스템을 흔들림 없이 우직하게 밀고 나가기 때문에, 빌리 빈의 내적 갈등은 거의 없다시피 합니다. 고작해야 세이버 매트릭스를 기반으로 하는 단장으로서, 혈기왕성한 자신의 본성을 억제한 채 결과에 초연한 자세를 유지하고 현장과 거리를 둔 채 통계와 수치에 근거하여 경영에 최선을 다하는 것에 불과하지요. 하지만 빌리 빈이라고 또 하나의 자신을 성공시키고 싶은 욕망이 아예 없었을까요? 사람은 그렇게 자신의 인생을 간단하게 부정할 수 없습니다. 때로는 자신이 오판하고 있는 줄 알면서도 관성과 습관과 아집 때문에 돌이킬 수 없는 선까지 밀어붙이다가 네거티브의 쳇바퀴를 벗어나지 못하고 자기파멸의 길로 빠져들기도 하고, 이보다는 온건하더라도 모순된 양가감정 속에서 번민하며 갈팡질팡하기 마련이지요. 그것이 픽션으로 묘사되면 우리에게 울림을 가져다주고요. 최고의 유전자를 타고 났지만 불의의 사고로 재능을 모두 잃고 자신의 유전자를 물려받은 타인의 성공에 기생하고 대리만족할 수밖에 없는 <가타카>의 제롬이 DNA의 모양새를 한 나선형의 계단을 온몸으로 기어오르는 처절한 분투가 강한 인상을 주는 것처럼 말입니다. 만약 빌리 빈이 그렇게 간단하게 자신의 인생과 회한을 부정하고 넘어가는 것이 아니라, 이성적으로는 세이버 매트릭스의 우월함과 효율성을 깨닫고 이를 실행하면서도, 마음 한편으로는 씁쓸함을 가지고 있는 복잡한 심사를 가지고 있는 인물로 그려졌다면, 영화가 줄 수 있는 인상은 한층 깊어졌을 것입니다. 마치 <우리들의 일그러진 영웅>의 한병태가 엄석대를 경멸하면서도 추억하듯 말입니다. 만약 그러했다면, 오클랜드가 머니볼 시스템에 의해 20연승을 했을 때, 그것은 빌리 빈에게 있어서 모두를 상대로 한 자신의 개혁이 드라마틱한 성공을 거두는 환희의 순간이기도 했겠지만, 정확히 그만치로 야구와 인간과 자기자신이 온전히 부정당하는 비탄의 순간이기도 했겠지요. 이 아이러니 가운데에서 모나리자처럼 웃는 듯 우는 듯 모호한 표정을 짓는 브래드 피트의 페이스가 카메라에 잡혔다면 꽤나 근사하지 않았을까요. 선수들을 관리하는 것도, 그렇게 단차원적으로 장기말처럼 다루는 것이 아니라, 과거의 자신을 연상케하는 그들의 실패에 대해 연민을 느끼기는 하지만, 이성적으로는 그들에게 냉혹해질 수밖에 없는 것에 담담하게나마 비애감을 느끼는 식이었다면 보다 곱씹을 여지가 많지 않을까요. 이런 식이었다면, 야구가 과학화 되었을 때, 나아가 세계가 온통 경영학의 실험장이 되었을 때, 우리는 어떠한 심리적/윤리적 문제를 맞닥 뜨리게 될 수 있는지에 대해 고민의 여지가 더 많아질 수 있었겠지요. 하지만 작품의 소재와 주제와 구성이 내포하고 있는 모든 가능성을 성취하는 것은 드물게 몇몇 명작들이나 성공해내는, 지극히 어려운 일입니다. 창작자가 자신의 분수에 맞지 않게 과욕을 부리다가 서사가 산으로 가고 감상은 유치해지는 일은 드물지 않지요. 이 점에서 <머니볼>은 비록 놓친 부분이 있을지언정 속빈 강정이라고 말할 수는 없을 것입니다. <다크나이트>가 그것이 가진 모든 잠재력에 도달하지는 못했더라도 히어로 영화의 새로운 영역을 개척하여 정점에 도달한 것처럼, <머니볼> 역시도 스포츠-과학 영화의 새로운 지평을 연 작품으로서 이후로도 두고두고 거론할만 하겠지요. 이후로 나오는 스포츠 드라마들은 태작이나 범작이 되지 않기 위해서는 <머니볼>이 도달한 경지를 외면할 수 없을 것이고, 그것이 <머니볼>이라는 영화의 의의일 것입니다. ★★★★ 4/5 통속적인 휴머니즘 드라마를 벗어나 스포츠-과학 영화의 새 지평을 썼다. * 지난 7월 29일, 제가 패널로 참여하는 팟캐스트 영화계 31화에서 <머니볼>을 리뷰한 바 있습니다. 본문에 나온 내용과 같은 맥락에서 영화에 대한 이야기를 나누어봤습니다. http://www.podbbang.com/ch/8720?e=21752520 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 0 이 게시판에 등록된 구밀복검님의 최근 게시물
