파 크라이 5는 주인공이 미국 시골 동네를 장악한 과격 종교 집단과 마을 주민들로 구성된 저항군 간의 전쟁에 끼어든다는 내용의 FPS 게임입니다. 개발사가 크라이텍인 1편을 제외하곤, 파 크라이 시리즈는 싸움을 벌어지는 지옥 같은 장소에서 활약하는 구성을 가지고 있죠. 그리고 이러한 내용을 기반으로 유비소프트가 제작하기 시작한 2편부터 확립된 정체성인 지역 점령, 전초기지 탈환 등의 샌드박스 컨텐츠는 여전히 유지되고 있습니다. 문제는 5편에선 이러한 컨텐츠를 코옵으로 즐길 수 있게 되었단 점과 비행기나 헬기가 추가되어서 공중전을 즐길 수 있게 되었다는 점 말고는 바뀐 건 없습니다. 특히 코옵은 모두가 즐기는 것이 아니니 만일 혼자서 플레이한다면, 거기에 비행기나 헬기도 몰지 않는다면 뭐가 바뀐건가 싶으실 겁니다. 제가 그랬거든요. 그나마 코옵에 기반을 둔 레벨 디자인 덕분에 다양한 개성을 가진 NPC를 동료로 삼아서 게임을 진행하는 건 그 중에서도 체감할만한 변화긴 합니다. 그러나 후속작이라면 더 알차게 채워넣었어야 했을 것들은 전작보다 퇴보했는데요. 예를 들어서 다양한 메커니즘을 가진 총기를 추가해서 종류를 늘리는 건 슈터 게임의 모범적인 개선책인데 오히려 그 수를 줄이는 것으로 퇴보해버렸습니다. 그나마도 등장하는 총기는 전작에서 보던 것들로 모델링 우려먹기인 게 뻔히 보여서 양심 없는 결과물로 보이기까지 합니다. 또 3편에서 성공적으로 들어갔던 수렵 같은 컨텐츠는 게임에 잘 어울리지 못합니다. 마치 내가 이걸 왜 하고 있어야 했나 싶었던 어쌔신 크리드 3를 또 플레이하는 느낌이에요. 게임의 배경에도 문제가 있습니다. 아시아나 아프리카의 최빈국에서 전쟁이 벌어진다고 해서 위화감을 느낄 이유는 없습니다. 현실이 그러니까요. 그러나 5편은 작위적인 전개만으로 퉁치고 넘어가려 하는데, 덕분에 미국에서 광신도 집단이 무장 봉기를 일으킨다는 전개가 핍진성을 상실해버립니다. 억지로라도 정치적 메세지를 넣어서 미국 정부를 비판하고자 한 게 아닌가 망상을 해봐야 할 정도로요. 마치 한국 영화에서 적당한 배경 설정 없이 총기를 무턱대고 집어넣으면 위화감을 크게 느낄 때가 많은데 딱 그 느낌이었습니다. 그런데 핍진성을 게임을 시작하자마자 상실해버린 5편은 스토리텔링에 있어서도 형편 없습니다. 3편이나 4편과 비교하면 명백히 퇴보라고 할만합니다. 광신도 집단의 행동은 단순하고 식상하며, 오로지 잔인함과 과격함만이 강조됩니다. 악역 조셉 시드는 인상적인 연출로 사이비 종교 지도자의 정체성은 강조할지 몰라도, 3편의 바스나 4편의 페이건 민에 비하면 비교도 민망할 정도로 매력이 없습니다. 그 외의 조연도 몽땅 마찬가지고요. 샌드박스 컨텐츠야 그렇다 쳐도, 메인 시나리오조차 적당히 괜찮아보이는 네러티브를 건지기 힘듭니다. 개연성은 찾아볼 수도 없고, 레벨 디자인에 맞춰서 억지로 끼워넣은 수준에 불과합니다. 유비소프트의 다른 작품인 고스트 리콘: 와일드랜드나 디비전에서도 느꼈던 점인데 게임 컨셉에서 핍진성과 개연성을 지나치게 무시하는 게 아닌가 싶을 정도에요. 어쌔신 크리드 오리진만 해도 이런 점을 절묘하게 비켜나가서 괜찮았었는데 저에겐 꽤 큰 단점이었습니다. 무엇보다 큰 단점은 엔딩으로, 엔딩만으로 파 크라이 5는 졸작이 되어버렸습니다. 불쾌할 정도로 작위적인 엔딩은 많은 시간을 투자해서 광신도로부터 마을을 지켜낸 플레이어를 우롱하고 있어요. 파격적이라고 말하기에는 막무가내일 뿐이고, 안에 담긴 주제 의식도 찾아볼 수 없어요. 제 기준으로 단순히 샌드박스 컨텐츠만을 생각해서 액션 게임을 즐기려는 분이라면 그래도 파 크라이 5는 변화는 없어도 퇴보까진 하지 않았으니 추천할만하지만, 모든 면을 중시하는 분이라면 파 크라이 5는 혐오스러운 실패작입니다. 차라리 3나 4가 더 좋은 선택지일 겁니다. 아니면 더 예전에 나온 2를 하는 게 나을지도 모르겠네요.
