 제주도에는 자동차박물관이라는 곳이 있습니다. 혹시 제주도에 놀러 오셨다가 가 보신 분들도 계실 겁니다만 관광객이 아닌 제주 토박이인 저는 그 동안은 굳이 찾아갈 필요성을 별로 못 느끼고 있었습니다. 그런데 이번에 수원에 사는 처남 가족이 여름휴가차 제주도를 내려왔는데 처남네 맏이(초3)가 차에 관심이 아주 많아서 폭염에도 불구하고 자동차 박물관을 가게 되었습니다. 가 봤더니 예상했던 것과는 달리 클래식 올드카들이 많이 전시되어 있어서 저 처럼 차에 큰 관심이 없는 사람도 한 번 정도는 흥미롭게 볼 수 있었습니다. 그런데 거기 전시물 가운데 흥미로운 내용이 있더군요. 자동차 좋아하시는 분들은 다 아실 내용이라 생각되지만 슈퍼카 메이커들인 람보르기나와 페라리가 묘한 라이벌 관계가 참 재미있는 일화 때문에 생겼더군요. 원래 람보르기니의 창업주 페루치오 람보르기니는 트랙터를 만드는 회사의 사장이었는데 본인이 자동차에도 관심이 많았다더군요. 돈도 남부럽지 않을 만큼 있는 그는 고가의 자동차들을 많이 구입했는데 그 가운데 페라리도 있었다고 합니다. 그런데 그가 페라리를 몰아보니 맘에 들지 않는 데가 좀 있었다고 합니다. 일단 소음도 크고 클러치도 좀 고장이 많이 나고... 그래서 그는 이런 불만 사항들을 페라리의 회장이었던 엔초 페라리에게 전달을 했는데 엔초 페라리가 페루치오 람보르기니에게 망신을 주었다고 합니다. 한 마디로 "어이구~! 그쪽 트랙터나 잘 만드세요!" 했다는 겁니다. 그래서 꼭지가 돈 페루치오 람보르기니가 직접 자동차 회사를 세우고 람보르기니를 만들기 시작했다고 하네요. 페루치오 람보르기니가 엔지니어들에게 주문한 사항은 단 하나뿐이었다고 합니다.
