3) 아스케시스 아스케시스는 “자기가 자기에게 가하는 수련으로서 고행”을 나타내는 단어입니다. 이것은 사유를 체화하는 것입니다. 즉 우리가 사유한 것을 체화하기 위해 훈련이 필요하다는 것이죠. 아스케시스를 통해 덕이 획득된다는 것은 아주 오래된 관념으로서 이것은 피타고라스, 플라톤, 소크라테스, 견유주의자들에게서 발견되는 관념들입니다. 그러나 푸코는 기원후 1~2세기, 헬레니즘·로마 시대의 스토아주의에서 주로 나타나는 자기 실천의 의미로서 아스케시스의 개념에 집중합니다. 파르헤시아가 스토아를 만나 아스케시스와 연결되기 때문입니다. 이것은 타인과의 관계로서 자기 배려가 자신과의 관계로 확대되는 계기이기도 합니다. 나중에 자세히 말하겠지만, 이러한 확대는 헬레니즘 시대에 진리와 주체 사이의 특징에 영향을 미칩니다. 아도에 의하면, 고대의 철학은 개인의 존재 방식의 급진적인 전환과 변형을 요구하는 영적 진보의 방법이었습니다. 그 자체로 삶의 방식이었으며 자아가 그 자체에만 의존하는 독립과 내적 자유를 성취하기 위한 방법이었습니다. 특히 스토아 철학에 있어서 철학 그 자체, 즉 철학적 삶의 방식은 더 이상 분과학문이 아니며 살아있는 논리, 물리학 및 윤리로 구성된 것이었습니다. 철학은 단지 철학적 담론이 아닌 삶의 방식이라는 것이라는 것이죠. 마사 누스바움(Martha Nussbaum)은 스토아학파를 포함한 헬레니즘의 철학 전통에서 철학은 단순히 영리함을 과시하기 위한 독립적 지적 기술이 아니라 인간의 비참한 상황을 다루기 위한 참여적이고 세속적인 기술이었으며, 특히 인생의 매우 고통스러운 문제들과 대결하는 방법으로서 의미 있었다고 주장합니다. 그러한 전통에서는 철학자들은 ‘인생을 위한 의사’로 불리웠습니다. 이러한 스토아 철학자들의 아스케시스에 있어 그 근간이 되는 바는 “경청, 독서, 말하는 사실과 관련된 모든 기술(技術)과 실천”이었습니다. (1) 경청 경청은 고행과 진리의 주체화에서 첫 단계라 할 수 있습니다. 고대 그리스·로마의 문화는 근본적으로 구두 문화였기 때문에 경청은 로고스와 주체를 관계 맺도록 해주는 주요한 방법이었습니다. 경청으로 진리가 주체에게 박히고 각인되어 자기 것이 되기 시작하고, 그러한 과정을 거쳐 주체가 에토스를 구축하기 시작하는 절차의 단계가 시작되는 겁니다. 진리(alêtheia)에서 에토스로의 이행, 다시 말해서 진리에서 행동의 근본적인 규칙으로의 이행은 바로 이 경청과 더불어 시작됩니다. 경청이 중요한 이유는 청각이 신체에서 다른 어떤 감각보다도 가장 수동적이기 때문입니다. “때로는 긍정적이지만 때로는 부정적인 음악의 모든 효과들을 느끼면서이든 간에 그 어떤 감각보다도 영혼을 사로잡을 수 있는 힘이 강합니다.” 그러나 플르타르코스에 의하면 동시에 청각은 가장 합리적(logikos)이기도 합니다. 청각은 다른 어떤 감각보다도 로고스를 잘 받아들이는 감각이기 때문입니다. 그래서 청각이야말로 덕을 배울 수 있는 유일한 감각이라는 겁니다. 덕은 로고스와 분리될 수 없는데, 여기서 로고스는 근본적으로 ‘말’을 의미합니다. 그래서 로고스는 귀와 청각을 통해서만 침투가능한 어떤 것입니다. 영혼이 로고스에 접근할 수 있는 유일한 접근로는 바로 이 청각입니다. 따라서 청각은 수동적(pathêtikos)이면서 합리적(logikos)인, 근본적인 양면성을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 아스케시스에서는 이러한 수동적이지만 합리적인 경청에서 무의지적인 수동성을 제거하고 합리성을 간직할 방법을 강조합니다. 아스케시스에서 강조하는 경청은 타인의 말이 끝날 때까지 끊지 않고 들으며, 그 듣는 태도에 있어서 부동을 유지할 정도로 진지하게 들어야 하며, 더불어 타인의 말을 들음에 있어 가치적인 면에 집중하여 그것을 정신에 각인시켜 잊지 않도록 해야 한다는 것입니다. “경청하는 영혼은 자기 자신을 감시해야 합니다. 자신이 듣는 바에 대해 적절히 주의를 기울이며 영혼은 자신이 듣는 바의 의미에 주의를 기울입니다. … (이것이) 철학적 고행의 궁극적이고 항구적인 목표인 참된 담론(진리)의 주체화의 첫 번째 요점입니다.” (2) 독서 철학적 독서는, 사실 저자가 말하고자 하는 바로서 책의 내용에 의해서 좌우되는 것이 아닙니다. 철학적 독서의 대상이나 목적은 한 저자의 작품에 있어서 그 내용을 아는 데 있는 것이 아닙니다. 또 저자가 말하고자 하는 바를 심화시키는데 있는 것도 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 그 독서가 명상의 계기가 될 수 있는가 입니다. 푸코는 지금은 ‘명상하다’는 의미로 해석되는 고대 그리스어 ‘멜레탄(meletan)’에 주목합니다. 현대에 이것은 명상의 의미를 가지지만 고대에는 ‘연습하다’, ‘훈련하다’의 의미를 지녔습니다. 이 훈련이나 연습은 육체적인 그것을 의미한다기보다 ‘사유상의’ 훈련을 의미하며 그래서 명상의 의미와 연결됩니다. 멜레탄은 사유의 자기화 훈련을 말하는데, 그것은 주어진 텍스트의 의미를 이해하는 게 목적이 아니라 사유를 자기화하고 그것을 깊게 확신하고 진리라고 믿는 것을 목적으로 합니다. “이것은 참된 사물로부터 진실을 사유하는 주체가 되며 진실을 사유하는 주체로부터 적절히 행동하는 주체가 됩니다.” 명상은 사유하기 위해서, 그리고 사유는 행동하기 위해서 필요한 훈련이라는 겁니다. 명상의 두 번째 특징은 사물 자체를 사유하는 것이 아닌 사유하는 사물을 훈련하는 것이라는 점입니다. “이것은 사유와 그 내용에 대한 훈련이 아닙니다. 그것은 주체가 사유를 통해 어떤 상황에 자신을 위치시키는 훈련입니다. 사유의 효과를 통해 현재의 자기와 관련해 주체를 이동시키는 것, 바로 이것이 내가(푸코) 논의하는 고대 그리스·로마 시대에 사람들이 이해하던 철학적 독서가 가져야 하는 명상적 기능입니다.” 이러한 명상이란 사고 실험을 통한 회의주의적 훈련을 말합니다. 철학적 독서는 무언가를 확신하고 규정짓고 이해하기 위한 것이었다기보다는 그것을 통해 의심하고 회의하고 다시 생각해보게 하는 계기로서 사유를 촉발시키는 것이라는 겁니다. 그리고 이를 통한 명상은 “사유를 통해 자기 자신을 체험하는 허구적 상황에 자신을 위치시키는 주체의 훈련”이었다고 합니다. (3) 말하는 사실과 관련된 모든 기술(技術)과 실천 1,2세기에 글쓰기는 자기 수련에 있어 중요한 한 요소였습니다. 특히 독서와 긴밀한 관계를 가지면서 더욱 활성화됐습니다. 다시 말해서 독서와 글쓰기는 상호 순환적으로 서로 영향을 주며 촉발시키는 형태로 수행되었는데, 이런 방식은 자기 수련에 있어 중요한 방법이었습니다. “에픽테토스에 있어서 명상하고 글을 쓰며 자기 수련을 해야 한다는 조언을 발견할 수 있습니다.” 자신이 쓴 것을 다시 읽는 것은 주체가 진리와 로고스를 자기화하는 신체적인 훈련이었습니다. 이렇게 자신이 쓴 것을 읽음과 그것에 대해서 다시 글쓰기를 하는, 서로 순환시키는 훈련은 “인간이 지니고 있던 진실과 로고스를 자기화하는 준 신체적인 훈련이었습니다.” 글쓰기는 자신뿐 아니라 타인와의 관계에서도 의미가 있습니다. “글쓰기는 자기 자신에게 유용한 활용이지만 타자에게도 유용한 활용입니다.” 헬레니즘·로마 시대에 이러한 글쓰기를 통한 서신 교환은 단지 타인에게 충고하고자 하는 것뿐만 아니라 자기 자신의 삶을 위해 필요한 진리를 다시 상기시키는 역할도 수행했습니다. “우리는 타자에게 하는 조언을 우리 자신에게도 합니다,” ‘글쓰기를 포함한 말하기’에서 푸코는 진리와의 관계를 강조합니다. 주체는 진리의 주체가 되어야 하며 그러기 위해서 주체는 진리 담론을 돌봐야 합니다. “주체는 진실의 주체가 되어야 하며 진실된 것을 말할 수 있어야 하고, 자기 자신에게 진실된 바를 말할 수 있어야 합니다.” 그런데 이렇게 주체가 ‘진실 말하기’를 해야 하는 이유는 무엇일까요? 푸코는 그것을 진리의 주체화와 진리를 말할 수 있는 능력상에서 주체가 어떤 지점에 있는 지를 의식할 수 있게 하기 위해 필요한 것이었다고 말합니다. 즉, 진실 말하기를 통해 주체는 자신이 스승의 위치에 있는지, 혹은 피지도자(혹은 제자)의 위치에 있는지를 의식할 수 있게 된다는 것입니다. 파르헤시아는 스승의 입장에서 제자의 정숙의 의무에 대한 화답이기도 합니다. “자신의 담론을 주체화하기 위해 주체가 침묵해야 하는 것과 마찬가지로 스승은 자신이 말하는 진실된 바가 행위와 지도가 끝날 무렵 제자가 주체화시키는 참된 담론이 되기를 원한다면 파르헤시아의 원칙에 따라야 합니다.” 푸코는 ‘철학자들의 영적인 고행에서 언어와 말의 역할’로서 파르헤시아의 도덕적 의미를 다룹니다. “우리가 철학자인 경우 이 요소들(언어적 요소, 영혼에 직접 영향을 주는 요소)을 조절하는 방식은 수사학의 테크네(tekhnê)나 기술이어서는 안 됩니다. 그것은 테크닉이자 윤리이고 기술이자 도덕인 파르헤시아라 불리는 다른 무엇이어야 합니다.” 그에게 철학적 담론은 자신이 뱉은 말에 대한 옳고 그름의 판별을 위한 자기 합리화의 절차가 아니었습니다. 그에게 철학적 담론은 자신의 입을 통해 그 말을 내뱉은 순간, 지키기로 맹세하는 윤리이자 도덕이었던 것입니다. 2) 진리와의 관계로서 아스케시스 지금까지 스토아 철학자들에게 있어서 아스케시스가 어떠한 방식으로 구현되는가를 살펴보았습니다. 이러한 아스케시스의 모습에서 주의하여 살펴보아야 하는 것은 그들이 이것을 진리와 관계 맺는 양상으로 파악했다는 것입니다. 아스케시스는 ‘엄격성, 포기, 금기, 좀스럽고 엄격한 명령’의 형태를 띄고 있습니다. 그러나 이것은 범이나 규범 같은 ‘일차적 심급’이 아니었습니다. “Askêsis는 사실 진실의 실천입니다. 고행은 법에 주체를 예속시키는 방식이 아닙니다.” 헬레니즘·로마 세계에서의 주체와 세계 인식 문제에서, 세계에 대한 지식이 주체의 경험 안에서 구원을 위해 일정한 영적인 형식과 가치를 가질 수 있도록 변형될 필요가 있었습니다. 이러한 고행과 수련은 “주체에게 행위 해야 하는 바대로 행위 하게 해줄 뿐만 아니라 또 존재해야 하는 바대로, 또 존재하기를 원하는 바대로 존재할 수 있게” 해주는 방법이었습니다. 주체의 자유의지에 따라 선택된 것으로서 고행은, 쾌락의 노예가 되지 않으려는 자기 배려의 실천이라 할 수 있습니다. 고대인의 삶에 있어서 자유는 다양한 삶의 실천 속에서 자신의 존재를 아름답게 가꾸는 하나의 실천적 기술이었습니다. 여기서 주목해야 할 점은 왜 그들이 진리와 관계 맺는 방법으로서 ‘고행’, ‘훈련’, ‘수련’을 택했는가 입니다. 그들은 고행을 통해서 무엇을 얻으려 한 것이고 실제로 무엇을 얻었을까요? 푸코는 “충만하고 완수되고 완결되며 자족적이고 자기에게서 취하는 행복에 해당하는 자기 변형을 이루어 내는 자기와의 일정한 관계를 형성하는 경지에 도달하는 것”이 고행의 목적이었다고 말합니다. 이러한 고행으로 장비를 갖추고 소유하게 되는데 이 장비를 파라스케우에(paraskeuê, 준비)라 부릅니다. “고행은 paraskeuê의 구축을 임무, 전술, 도구로 삼습니다.” 이 ‘파라스케우에’는 구체적으로 무엇일까요? 푸코는 그것을 “합리적인 행동의 모태를 구축할 수 있기 위해 진실된 담론이 취해야 하는 형식”이라고 합니다. 그는 스토아 철학자들의 글에 나오는 운동선수의 예를 들어 파라스케우에의 특징을 설명합니다. 첫째로, 이것은 춤보다는 격투기와 비슷하다고 합니다. 어떤 이상적 상태로의 지향이 아니라 ‘경계 태세를 갖추고 평형을 유지하는 채비’라는 면에서, 외부의 사건은 늘 갑자기 엄습할 수 있으며 그것에 대비하여 경계 태세를 유지해야 한다는 측면에서 그렇다는 것입니다. 둘째로, 파라스케우에는 담론(logoi)에 의해 구축됩니다. 이 담론들은 주체에게 주어진 ‘명령’으로 존재하지 않고 신념을 야기하는 식으로 행위를 유발하는 설득의 형태를 지닙니다. 즉, 자발적으로 행위하게끔 하는 행위유도적인 도식들입니다. “합리적인 로고스의 물질적 요소들은 행동의 모태의 자격으로 주체에 실제적으로 각인됩니다. 바로 이것이 paraskeuê입니다. 생의 운동선수에게 필요한 askêsis는 이것을 획득하려고 목표합니다.” 세 번째 특징은 파라스케우에를 구축하는 로고스가 ‘구조(救助)’라는 점입니다. 이 로고스는 주체가 도움을 요청하는 순간 응답해야 하며, 주체에게 해야 할 바를 말한다거나 주체가 해야 할 바를 하게 만든다는 겁니다. 이 말은 그것을 거의 근육 속에 지녀야 함을 의미합니다. 그것을 수중에 넣어 즉각적으로 지체 없이 자동적으로 재가동 시킬 수 있어야 한다는 거죠. “paraskeuê는 로고스를 에토스로 변형시키는 요체입니다.” 이것은 진리의 담론을 도덕적으로 수용 가능한 행동의 원칙으로 변형시키는 구조입니다. 이것을 가능하게 하는 아스케시스는, ‘이성(logos)이 품성(ethos)으로 어떻게 변화할 수 있는가’ 라는 질문에 대한 고대인의 답변이라 할 수 있습니다. 아스케시스를 통해 우리는 철학이 가치의 문제를 어떻게 구체적인 실천으로 가져왔는가에 대한 고대인들의 태도를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 가치를 실천으로 옮기는 윤리적 수행에 있어서, 그것은 단지 이상의 추구가 아닌 실존의 투쟁이어야 한다는 것입니다. 또한 그 행위는 부여된 명령의 이행이 아닌 자발적인 행위이어야 하며, 이성적 판단에 앞서 훈련으로 인해 자동적으로 나타나는 행위이어야 한다는 것입니다. 아스케시스는 이러한 윤리적 수행을 가능하게 하는 것으로서 의미 있습니다. 앞에서 말했듯이, 주체가 절제해야 하는 이유는 그것이 진리와 관계 맺기 위한 조건이기 때문입니다. 주체가 진리에 입각한 삶을 살기 위해서는 절제가 반드시 필요합니다. “철학적 고행은 개인을 진실에 연루시키는 것을 원칙으로 삼습니다. … 철학적 고행은 내가 진실된 담론을 말할 수 있게 만들며, 또 내가 그 진실된 담론의 발화 주체가 되게 합니다.” 이러한 고행은 주체로 하여금 진리를 주체화하는 계기이자, 자기 자신과 만나는 계기를 제공합니다. “진실을 자기 것으로 만드는 것, 참된 담론의 발화 주체가 되는 것, 바로 이것이 철학적 고행의 핵심입니다.” 아스케시스는 이렇게 주체를 진리의 발화 주체, 즉 ‘진실 말하기’가 가능한 주체로 만듭니다. 여기서 아스케시스는 주체가 말하는 것이 ‘진리’라는 것을 보장하는 역할을 합니다. 주체가 진리를 말하고 있다는 것은 어떤 초월적 가치와의 관계로부터가 아니라 바로 이러한 발화 주체의 진실성으로부터 담보된다는 것입니다. 그래서 여기서의 진실성이란, 단순히 그가 진리를 인식하고 있다는 의미에서의 진실성이 아니라, 발화 주체가 지니는 삶의 태도, 그가 자신의 삶을 통해 보여주는 모습에 의해서 진실성이라 할 수 있습니다. 즉 진실성을 드러내는 방법은 인식, 다시 말해서 진리에 대한 앎을 통해서가 아니라 삶을 태하는 태도와 같은 진리의 실천을 통해서라는 것입니다. 여기서 자신과의 관계를 어떻게 가지고 가는지, 그리고 자신과 관계 맺을 때 그것이 진리를 향한 계속된 노정에 있는지와 같은 점이 중요해집니다. 즉 여전히 자신이 주체화 과정 속에 있다는 것을 드러내는 방법이 바로 고행인 것입니다. 아스케시스를 행한다는 것은 자신이 여전히 진리를 찾는, 어쩌면 끝나지 않을 주체화의 과정 중에 있다는 것의 증명이자 다짐이라 할 수 있습니다. 철학적 고행으로서 아스케시스는 자신이 진리의 주체화 과정에 있음을 드러내는 작업입니다. 그 진리는 자신의 에토스로 전향시키기 위한 로고스로서의 진리이며 타인에게 진실을 말하기 위한 보장으로서 진리입니다. 그래서 푸코에게 파르헤시아, 진실 말하기가 의미를 가집니다. 즉, 주체가 고행(아스케시스)을 감수해야 하는 이유는 주체가 말하는 것이 진리(파르헤시아)여야 하기 때문입니다. 또한 진리를 말하기 위해서(파르헤시아) 그 진리대로 살고 있음을 보여줘야 하고 그러기 위해서 고행(아스케시스)을 감수해야 합니다. 발화주체의 에토스가 로고스를 통해 드러나며(파르헤시아), 그것을 위해 다시 로고스를 에토스로 변형시켜야(아스케시스) 하는 것입니다. 그리고 이러한 순환 구조를 통해 ‘자기’는 끊임없는 진리의 주체화 과정을 거치며 자신을 진리의 주체로 만들어 나갑니다. 이렇게 주체는 진리의 주체화 작업을 끊임없이 수행함으로써 구축되는 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 진리의 주체화 작업은 성찰의 작업이지만, 이 성찰은 혼자서 수행하는 고독한 작업이 아닙니다. 성찰을 위해서 반드시 타인이 필요하고 그 타인을 배려하면서 자신을 배려하게 됩니다. 이렇게 자기에의 배려는 다시 타인을 향한 배려로 순환합니다. 타인에 대한 배려로서 파르헤시아는, 자기를 배려하는 것으로서 아스케시스로 되돌아옵니다. 자기 배려에 있어서 주체가 진리와 관계 맺기 위해서 다른 이들이 필요하다는 것입니다. 그들에게 자신의 진리를 말함으로써 그들 스스로의 진리를 찾는 노정의 시작을 도울 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 그리고 자신이 하는 말이 진리이기 위해서 자신의 삶도 진리임을 증명해야 하는 것입니다. 자기 배려, 즉 파르헤시아와 아스케시스의 이러한 순환적인 모습은 고대 그리스·로마 시대에 철학이 구체적으로 삶에 어떻게 관여하였는지를 보여주고 있습니다.
