문명 6: 흥망성쇠는 전통적으로 시리즈에 추가되었던, 다양한 요소가 추가되고, 한국이나 네덜란드 같은 새로운 문명을 추가한 확장팩입니다. 전 문명 6 오리지널에 대해 많이 실망한 편이었는데요. 구체적으로 말하자면 난잡하게 변화만 많고 실속 하나 없는 미완성작 정도로 봤습니다. 그런 점에서 확장팩의 등장은 꼭 필요했고, 돈 받고 보수에 나선 수리공의 등장쯤으로 봐도 무방하겠죠. 확장팩의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 이번 작의 주요 테마는 '시간의 흐름에 따른 국가의 변화'입니다. 단순한 보너스 개념에 불과했던 기존의 황금기를 시대마다 문명 전체에 보너스를 가하는 황금기, 반대로 패널티를 가하는 암흑기의 도래로 구현하여 하나의 제국이 2보 전진을 위해서 1보 후퇴해야 하는 양상을 만들어냈습니다. 또 하나의 중요한 변화는 도시 운영에 있습니다. 도시의 충성도를 부여해서 무절제한 영토 확장은 적에게 손실 없이 도시를 넘겨주기 쉽도록 패널티를 가했고, 새로 추가된 총독은 도시에 주둔하여 보너스를 줌에 따라서 내실 있는 도시 운영이 확장보다 우선시될 수 있도록 한 좋은 추가점입니다. 외교에 있어서도 변화가 있었습니다. 동맹의 유형을 정해서 다양한 효과(종교, 과학, 문화, 군사)를 부여하는 동맹을 설정할 수 있도록 하거나, 특정 상황에서 문제시되는 국가를 공동 타격할 수 있도록 하는 비상 사태 시스템은 색다르고 재미있습니다. 단 비상 사태는 플레이하면서 AI가 잘 대응하지 못하는 것 같더군요. 음악도 훌륭합니다. 새로 추가된 문명 중에서 몽골의 전통 민요나 줄루의 경건하면서도 경쾌한 노래는 그 문명의 이미지에도 잘 어울립니다. 한국의 아리랑이나 스코틀랜드의 유명한 용감한 스코틀랜드도 인상적이에요. 원래 오리지널 때부터 음악의 종류가 적다는 건 말고는 매우 만족스러웠고요. 다만 여전히 고쳐지지 않은 점은 불만족스럽습니다. 중세의 기사가 무려 현대 시대의 탱크까지 기다려야 하는 부조리한 유닛 트리는 설득력도 없고 매력도 없습니다. 다소 유닛이 추가되면서 완화되었지만 열기구가 드론으로 바뀌는 정도로는 만족스럽지 못해요. 또한 전투 시스템에 있어서 완성도가 떨어지는 건 아니지만, 전작에 비해 복잡하기 때문에 AI가 시스템을 잘 활용하지 못하는 것도 문제입니다. 이러니 고 난이도에서 무지막지하게 퍼준 AI 보너스로 겨우 플레이어와 합을 맞추죠. 그런데도 불구하고 매번 전투를 보면 형편 없을 정도로 멍청한 건 여전해요. 오히려 5가 나아보이는 건 상대적으로 단순한 시스템을 AI가 충분히 잘 받아들일 수 있어서였거든요. 6의 큰 문제점 중 하나였던 UI와 UX는 수정되어 나아진 점도 있긴 합니다. 지도자 화면에서 페이드 아웃이 너무 길어서 시간을 잡아먹는다거나, 외교 화면을 끌 때마다 마우스가 아니라 키보드에 손을 대도록 강제하는 결함은 해결되었습니다. 그러나 이런 것들은 확장팩이 아니라, 팬들의 수정 모드가 나오기도 전에 알아서 수정되었어야 했던 것들인만큼 긍정적으로 평가하기 어렵습니다. 오히려 이제서야 고쳤다는 게 우스워요. 반대로 여전히 말썽인 부분도 많습니다. 빈번한 클릭 오류를 만들어내는 불편한 도시 UI가 대표적입니다. 오히려 새로 추가된 총독 관련 UI까지 확장되면서 더 불편해졌어요. 한번이라도 클릭을 덜 하도록 유도해서 피로도를 줄이는 것이 미덕일텐데, 문명 6는 한번이라도 클릭을 더 유도하려고 작정한 게임 같아요. 마지막으로 새로 추가된 문명 중에서 한국을 비롯한 몇몇 문명은 성의가 없어보여요. 국가와 지도자를 합쳐서 두 가지의 특성이 들어가야 하는 문명 6에서 할당량을 채우려고 엉망인 문명이 있습니다. 한국이 대표적이죠. 한국인 입장에서 바라보면 위키피디아를 검색하면서 어떻게든 게임으로 구현할 수 있도록 억지로 만들어낸 것처럼 보여요. 상대적으로 익숙하고 자료도 많은 유럽 국가와 그렇지 못한 타 지역 문명은 도움말의 설명문만 봐도 알 수 있을 정도로요. 특히 오리지널 때도 극도로 폐쇄적인 스파르타를 문화 강국을 만들어둔 바보 같은 디자인은 여전히 존재하죠. 콩고나 아즈텍 정도로 매력적이고 독특하게 구현한 문명보다 어디서 본 듯한 특성과 효과로 도배해둔 문명은 차라리 없느니만 못합니다. 자료가 부족하고 다른 문명과 차별화하기 힘들다면 굳이 잘 알려지지 않은 문명을 억지로 넣을 필요는 없다고 생각합니다. 6에서 제일 논란이 되었던 프랑스의 카트린만 해도, 카트린이 프랑스의 지도자로 나오는 것보다도 종교 문제로 유명했던 지도자를 첩보 특화로 둔갑시켜놔서 유저들이 납득하는 데에 실패했다고 보는 편이거든요. 결과적으로 이번 흥망성쇠 확장팩은 6에 부족했던 점을 보강하는 데에는 충분히 성공한 변화입니다. 그러나 근본적으로는 몇몇 완성도가 떨어지는 문명과 지도자의 완성도나 여전히 고쳐지지 않은 것들, 그 중에서도 종교와 인터페이스는 발목을 붙잡고 있어요. 특히 종교는 이번 확장팩에서 큰 변경점조차 없다는 게 안타까울 정도인데요. 결국 꽤 준수한 확장팩이지만 6의 근본적이 문제를 '완전히' 해결하는 데에는 여전히 부족하다고 봅니다.
