"모스크바 전투 그거 다 날씨 때문에 독일군이 박살난 거 아닙니까?" 이 말은 1/3만 맞습니다. 결론부터 말하면 날씨가 어마어마하게 춥기는 했어요. 그것은 잠시 후에 직접 보기로 하고, 독일군의 월동 장비가 부족했던 것도 사실이었습니다. 이전부터 줄곧 기회가 될 때마다 이야기했던 사실인데 기본적인 궤간부터가 차이가 나는 바람에 대부분의 독일군 월동 장비가 폴란드에 묶여 있었죠. 그리고 무엇보다, 소련군 자체가 제1차 세계대전의 그 러시아군이 아니었습니다. 제1차 세계대전의 러시아군은 그야말로 '안습' 그 자체였는데, 제2차 셰개대전에서 소련군이 보여주고 있는 투지와 끈기, 그리고 상층부의 능력은 명백히 제1차 세계대전 당시의 러시아군을 훨씬 상회하고 있었습니다. 즉, 모스크바 전투는 독일군 스스로의 자멸이 1/3, 소련군의 노력이 1/3, 그리고 (인력으로는 어찌할 수 없는) '하늘의 뜻'이 1/3씩 기여한 결과인 셈이죠. 소련군의 노력은 결코 적은 게 아닙니다. 리하르트 조르게를 포함한 스파이들이 일본에서 정보를 빼낸 덕에 아주 쌩쌩한 시베리아 주둔군을 빼돌릴 수 있었고, 앞 글에서도 밝혔듯이 게오르기 주코프의 냉철한 상황 판단이 매우 주효하였습니다. 그러면, 소련군의 노력 및 독일군의 자멸에 필적하는 날씨의 영향이 대체 어느 정도였는지, 그걸 한 번 따져볼 필요가 있습니다. 제가 늘 불만이었던 것은 대부분의 서적에서 모스크바 전투를 다룰 때 그냥 단순히 "추웠다나 보다" 하고 넘어갔다는 사실입니다. 사실 독일군이라고 러시아 추운 걸 몰랐겠습니까? 당장 나폴레옹이 모스크바에서 털린 게 200년이 안 되었고, 소련군이 핀란드에게 겨울전쟁에서 털린 게 (물론 소련군 탓이 크기는 해도) 고작해야 2년 전 이야기였습니다. 물론 독일군의 수뇌부가 상상 이상으로 멍청했고(엄청난 스케일에다가 나라 자체의 운명이 바뀔 전쟁을 그토록 허술하게 준비했다는 사실만으로도 독일군의 수뇌부는 멍청하다는 표현을 받아 마땅하며 이마저도 칭찬으로 들릴 정도입니다), 적을 얕봤으며, 준비가 부족하기는 했죠. 그걸 독일군이라고 모르지는 않았을 겁니다. 표준궤-광궤 환적 문제와 라스푸티차야 독일군의 준비 부족이라 치죠. 작전 자체가 겨울 전에 끝날 거라고 예상했던 상황이었으니 말입니다. 자, 여기에서, 역사에 만약이라는 건 없다고들 합니다만, 한 가지 가정을 해 봅시다. 만에 하나, 독일군이 기상 데이터를 받아서 모스크바의 평균 겨울 수준으로 준비를 했다 치죠. 그러면 독일군이 월동 문제에서 좀 자유로울 수 있었겠느냐? 이걸 생각해 봐야 날씨의 효과가 얼마나 컸는지를 감을 잡을 수 있을 거 아닙니까. 답을 말하자면, 어림도 없었습니다. 재미있는 자료를 찾아냈는데, GISS라는 곳이 있습니다. Goddard Institute for Space Studies(고다드 우주 연구 시설)의 앞글자를 따서 GISS라고 하는데, 전세계 방방곡곡의 기상자료를 수집하더군요(심지어 북한에도 한 군데도 아니고 여러 군데 있습니다). NASA 직속입니다. 이 GISS 홈페이지의 관측 자료 - https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/stdata/ - 를 찾아봤는데, 기대 이상의 수확을 거뒀습니다. 이 사이트에서 얻은 자료를 한 번 보시죠. 우선 모스크바의 자료입니다. Moscow가 아니라 Moskva라고 검색해야 제대로 된 자료가 나옵니다. Moscow로 검색하면 엉뚱한 아이다호 주의 모스크바가 나오더군요. 중간의 하이라이트친 부분을 보세요. 가뜩이나 1941년 1월의 평월 기온도 영하 13.6도로 모스크바의 전체 1월 평균 기온(영하 6.5도)을 한참 밑돌고 있었는데, 1942년 1월이 되니까 영하 19도. 아직 1942년 1월까지는 이야기가 안 나왔으니 1941년 12월을 볼까요? 그래도 영하 12도. 그냥 정도가 아니라 엄청나게 추운 겨울이었습니다. 저게, 저 1941년 12월부터 1942년 2월까지 이르는 저 추위가, 히틀러에게는 그야말로 하필이라는 말이 딱 어울리는데, 20세기 백 년 동안의 겨울 중 가장 추운 겨울이었습니다. 저 영하 12도가, 평균 기온입니다. 평균 기온. 최저점이 아니라요. 상상이 잘 안 가실 분들이 많을 것 같으니 우리 나라로 바꿔서 이야기해 보죠. 모스크바의 12월 월평균 기온은 영하 5.2도입니다. 이 정도로 추운 곳을 한반도에서 찾으려면 신의주까지 올라가야 합니다(신의주는 바로 옆이 서해라서 그래도 내륙보다는 그나마 좀 따뜻합니다). 그런데, 그 해 겨울이 얼마나 추웠던지, 기온이 아주 그냥 중강진 뺨치는(!!!) 수준까지 내려갔다는 겁니다(중강진의 12월 평균 기온은 영하 15도). 참고로 우리 나라에서 '춥다'의 대명사로 통하는 철원의 12월 평균 기온이 영하 3도입니다. 낙폭으로 이야기해 보면, 12월의 평균 기온이 7도 떨어진 거 아닙니까? 저 정도 차이를 만들려면, 부산 살던 사람이 겨울에 포천 내지는 의정부 정도는 와서 살아야 하는 수준입니다(12월 평균기온 부산 5.8도, 동두천 영하 1.9도). 실감이 가시는지요. 덤으로 얹어 드리는 혜산진과 중강진의 기온입니다. 1942년 1월의 모스크바의 기온은 개마고원 뺨치는 정도가 아니라 아예 혜산진보다 더 추운 수준으로, 수은주가 바닥을 뚫어 맨틀을 돌파해 버릴 기세였다는 이야기죠. 이러니 가뜩이나 보통의 월동 장비로도 추워 죽을 판인 독일군이, 그 엄청난 추위에 답이 있었겠습니까? 아, 참고로 말씀드리는데, 당시 독일에서 위도가 가장 높았던 쾨니히스베르크(현 칼리닌그라드)는, 부동항이었습니다. 그 겨울에도 얼어붙는다는 발트 해의 항구였는데도요. 12월 월평균 기온은 영하 0.3도로 서울보다 약간 추운 수준. 자, 이런 상황이니, 독일군의 공세가 제대로 진행이 된다면 그게 더 이상하죠. 물론 추위는 분명히 소련군에게도 타격을 입혔을 겁니다. 그게 어디 보통 추위여야 말이죠. 근데 소련군은 이미 1940년 1월, 그러니까 한창 겨울전쟁이 발발하던 그 시기에 모스크바보다 더 추운 지역에서 싸운 경험이 있었고(당장 위 표를 보시면 1940년 1월 기온도 엄청났음을 확인할 수 있습니다), 기본적으로 월동 준비가 어느 정도 되는 나라였기에 독일보다는 상황이 명백히 좋았습니다. 재미있는 건 언제나 이런 지독한 겨울을 끼고 싸우는 상황에서는 반드시라고 해도 좋을 정도로 수비측이 웃었다는 건데요, 겨울전쟁의 핀란드가 그랬고(결국 겨울이 끝나면서 영토를 상당 부분 내주기는 했습니다만 발트 3국처럼 아예 위성국이 되는 운명은 면했습니다), 독소전쟁의 소련이 그랬고, 장진호 전투의 미군이 그랬죠. 어쨌거나 독일군은 엄청난 추위로 인해 제 한 몸 간수하기도 힘든 상황이 되었는데, 여기에 엎친 데 덮친다고 소련군이 대반격을 개시하기 시작했습니다. 소련군의 대반격이 개시된 시점에서의 지도인데요, 눈여겨보실 곳은 북쪽입니다. 물론 구데리안의 제2기갑집단을 밀어내기 위한 남쪽에서의 반격도 상당한 수준이었습니다만, 북쪽은 아주 그냥 엄청난 수의 병력을 몰아붙였죠. 1 y 어쩌구라고 되어 있는 것은 1-я ударная армия, 즉 제1충격군의 약자입니다. 11월 25일에 결성된 야전군인데, 이 충격군이라는 개념을 좀 설명을 드리면... 일종의 공격부대입니다. 주력부대는 보병, 포병과 공병부대로, 딱 봐도 기동력을 강조하는 부대는 절대 아니죠. 가끔 전차연대가 끼여들기는 하지만 전차운용의 핵심인 기동력(Mobility)을 위한 것이 아니라 보병부대를 지원하는(Direct Support) 역할이 주됩니다. 그렇다면 이 부대의 목적은 뭐냐? 상대하는 독일군의 방어선에 심대한 타격을 입히고(그래서 '충격'군입니다), 공병부대가 교두보를 만드는 등 적의 방어선에 틈을 만들면, 바로 이 때 그 틈으로 기동성이 뛰어난 기계화군단이나 전차군단이 적의 배후를 휘젓고 다니면서 적을 농락하는 겁니다. 틈을 만들기 위해 강력한 공격을 가하기 때문에 충격군이라는 이름이 붙은 건데, 틈을 만들기 위해 강력한 충격을 주고 그 틈으로 빠른 기동력을 가진 부대가 들어간다는 것은 명백히 투하체프스키가 주창한 종심작전이론(Deep Operation)의 주축입니다. 한 마디로, 소련군의 교리가 투하체프스키의 그것을 따르고 있다는 명명백백한 하나의 증거인 셈입니다. 그러면 이들의 당면과제는 무엇이냐? 모스크바 북쪽에서 모스크바를 위협하는 기지가 될 클린(Klin, 제30군과 제1충격군의 공격방향) 및 칼리닌(Kalinin, 현 트베리(Tver), 제29군 바로 아래의 도시)의 해방이었습니다. 특히 칼리닌의 경우, 20만 명에 달하는 상주인구도 인구지만 도시의 이름 자체가 (이름뿐이라지만) 소련의 국가 원수였던 미하일 칼리닌(Mikhail Kalinin)의 이름을 딴 터라서 나름대로의 상징섣도 대단한 도시였죠. 오죽하면 아예 전선군의 이름 자체가 "칼리닌 전선군"이라 이름이 붙었겠습니까(우리 식으로 하자면 동부 전선을 담당하는 제1야전군은 인제 전선군, 서부 전선을 담당하는 제3야전군은 서울 전선군, 이런 식으로 이름을 붙인 건데, 거기에 칼리닌이라는 도시 이름이 들어간 겁니다). 우선 북쪽에서는 제9군을 상대로 칼리닌을 향해 돌격해 들어갔고, 결국 독일군은 열흘 후 도시를 내주고 퇴각할 수밖에 없었습니다. 비록 독일군이 잿더미로 만들고 퇴각하긴 했습니다만, 칼리닌은 첫 번째로 완벽하게 해방된 소련의 주요 도시가 되었습니다(이전의 1941년 11월 로스토프의 경우는 독일군이 점령하고 있던 시간 자체가 좀 짧았던지라, 완전 점령했다 하기에는 무리가 좀 있었죠). 그리고 가장 중요한 게 바로 이 클린의 탈환이었는데, 충격군을 동원한 사실에서 알 수 있듯이 이는 소련군 반격의 명백한 주력부대였습니다. 클린 자체가 모스크바에서 가까웠던지라 이 돌출부를 확실하게 잘라먹어야 모스크바가 안전해진다는 점도 크게 작용했겠죠. 이 공세를 기획한 사람은 역시 주코프였습니다. 공격은 아주 순조로웠습니다. 여기에 한 가지 행운 아닌 행운이 더해지는데, 12월 8일부로 히틀러가 중요한 총통 지령 39호를 내린 겁니다. 방어태세로 전환한다는 게 골자였는데, 여기에 그 유명한 후퇴 금지가 끼어 있었던 거죠. 이게 명시적으로 표현된 게 아니기는 한데, "적에게 밀려나지 않고 전선을 뒤로 물리려면 후방이 준비가 더 잘 되어 있어야 한다"느니, "적에게 주요 교차점을 내주는 것은 나머지 안정되지 못한 전선에 문제를 줄 수 있으므로 후퇴 시기는 조정되어야 한다" 따위의 독소조항이 끼어 있었습니다. 이거, 후퇴하지 말라는 소리죠. 거 왜 앞서 주코프가 방어선을 세울 때 얇게 펴서 각개격파당하느니 좀 위험해도 적이 공격할 곳에 집중적으로 병력을 배치하는 신기묘산의 진수를 보여준 바 있지 않았습니까? 히틀러는 정확하게 거꾸로 가고 있었던 거죠. 그 결과야 뭐... 이런 식이죠. 일부 독일군이 포위되는 상황까지 놓인 겁니다. 이러니 독일군은 후퇴를 할 수밖에 없었고(그나마도 히틀러의 허가 없이), 12월 14일에 클린이 해방되면서 모스크바도 크게 한숨 돌리게 됩니다. 총통 지령 39호에 대해 조금 더 이야기하자면, 제4항에는 아예 세바스토폴 점령이니 레닌그라드 인근의 핀란드군과의 조우니 등등 참 읽으면 읽을수록 사람 황당하게 만드는 공세적인 판단에 바탕한 지령이 적혀 있습니다. 히틀러가 그렇게 망상을 했으니 무리한 명령으로 사실상 후퇴를 금지해 버린 것도 이상할 게 없는 것이죠. 즉, 히틀러는 아군의 피해가 극심하고 패배가 눈에 보이는 상황에서도 분수에 맞지 않는 더 큰 승리를 탐했던 것입니다. 설령 그 승리를 딸 자격이 있다 해도 승리를 탐하면 오히려 승리를 얻기 어려운 것이 세상 이치인데, 분수에도 맞지 않는 승리를 탐했으니 그런 승리가 어디 손아귀에 들어가기나 하겠습니까? 이런 상황이니 남쪽의 구데리안이라고 뭐 별 수 있었겠습니까? 그나마 구데리안은 명장 소리에 걸맞게 눈치가 빨라서 그나마 뒤도 안 돌아보고 군사를 물리기는 했습니다만, 지독한 강추위로 장비가 얼어붙는 판에서는 기갑부대도 명성만은 못한 전과를 올릴 수밖에 없었습니다. 그래서... 12월 14일이 되자 포위 위기에 놓였던 툴라도 완전하게 안정세를 되찾고, 반격의 교두보로서 자리매김하게 되는 것이죠. 이렇게 12월 15일경에는 거의 50 km 가량을 밀어내면서 모스크바를 완전히 안전하게 만들었습니다. 소련군으로서는 상당한 전과였죠. 손 안에 든 패가 독일군보다 적은 상황에서 하늘이 도왔고, 소련군 스스로가 스스로를 도왔으며, 때맞춰서 히틀러가 삽질을 개시하는 덕분에 첫 번째 반격은 그런대로 상당한 성과를 거웠습니다. 하지만 여전히 작전술적인 운용이라는 "경험치"적인 면에서는 독일군이 앞섰다는 것이 보여진 장면이기도 했는데, 보통 이런 상황에서 발생할 법한 대규모 포위가 발생하지 않은 것이죠. 구데리안과 라인하르트, 회프너를 위시한 역전의 장군들이 독일군을 포위 섬멸이라는 위기에서 구해냈다고 볼 수도 있겠습니다. 그리고 소련군 입장으로서도 충격군까지 동원해며 많이 밀어내긴 했지만 서로 병력이 엄청나게 뒤엉킨 터라 - 태풍 작전에 동원된 병력이 거의 바르바로사 작전급이었다고 제가 이야기했었던가요 - 전선 자체는 상당히 안정된 듯이 보였습니다. 그러나 소련군의 공격은 이게 끝이 아니었습니다.
