할아버지는 그 때 이야기를 하시면서 그 때 자신이 죽지 않은 것은 의사였기 때문임을 강조하셨다. 그러면서 '법관은 나라가 있는한 안정적인 직업이지만, 의사는 나라가 없어져도 안정적인 직업이다'라고 이야기하곤 하셨다. 아마 내게도 이런 이야기를 자꾸 하신 것은 은근히 의대에 가라는 이야기셨던 것 같기도 한데, 나는 수학이 꼴보기 싫은 나머지 문과를 골랐었다. 그리고 꽤나 후회했었지...사실 지금 생각하면 의대를 갔으면 나의 입장상 좀더 여러가지 꿀을 빨았겠구나 싶기도 하고, 나의 적성도 그 쪽이 더 맞았던 것 같긴 하다. 법대 수업중 제일 재밌었던 건 법의학이고 시보하면서 부검 참관을 흥미진진해서 바짝붙어 들여다보는 사람이 조에서 나밖에 없었으니까...-_-; 할아버지는 남쪽으로 내려와 국군에서 군의관으로 복무하셨고, 복무하시던 중에 영어를 하실 수 있었기에 하와이 기지에서 근무하시기도 했다. 이에 대해서는 내가 정확히 알지 못해 혼란이 있는데, 일단 하와이에서 가셨던 것은 확실한데 이게 군의관때인지 서울대병원에서 근무하실 때인지 혼동이 있고 전쟁중이었는지 전쟁후였는지를 잘 모르겠다. 일본에 계실 때도 있었는데 이 때는 또 시기가 언제인지 모르겠다. 하지만 분명했던건, 할아버지는 일본인 소학교에서는 조선인이었고, 만주에서는 조선출신 일본인이었고, 서울에서는 월남한 이북사람이었고, 하와이에서는 동양인이었으며 어느 곳에서나 소수자, 이방인이었다. 본인의 기술과 언어로 자신의 쓸모를 끊임없이 입증해야 했고 그런 기회를 계속해서 찾아오셨다. 할아버지는 자세히 이야기하진 않으셨지만 질시와 괴롭힘이 있었다는 정도로 간략한 이야기는 들었었다. 그리고 가끔 허우대만 멀쩡한 손자에게 이렇게 이야기하곤 하셨다. '남자는 팔힘도 있어야해. 2:1은 못 이겨도 1:1로는 이길 수 있어야 하거든. 보통 사람 한명은 이길 정도가 되어야 해.' 다시한번 꺼삐딴리를 떠올리지 않을 수 없다. 사람들이 꺼삐딴리를 읽으며 기회주의자이자 이기주의자 꺼삐딴리를 욕할때 나는 그가 이기주의자인지 개인주의자인지 이야기하고 그가 그렇게 '권력자에게 이용될 수 있는' 자신을 만들기 위해 해야했을 노력과 그 과정에서 겪었을 고난을 상상한다. 덧붙여, 내가 이렇게까지 읽는 것은 반대쪽으로 편향된 글읽기라는 것도 되새겨보면서. 나는 할아버지와 많은 시간을 같이 보낸 손자였다. 나는 아주 어릴 적에 할아버지와 함께 살았고, 조금 커서는 우리 아파트 옆동-_-에 할아버지가 사셨기 때문에 매주 할아버지를 찾아뵈었다. 내가 손자들 중 맏이였기 때문에 (사촌누나들은 있었지만) 더 이뻐해 주신것 같기도 하다. 내가 6,7살때 할아버지할머니와 함께 평일에 서울랜드에 갔던 적이 있는데.. 평일이라 정말 사람이 없어서 놀이기구들이 아예 운행을 제대로 안했다. 그 때 태어나서 처음으로 바이킹을 탔는데 정말 그 바이킹에 나와 할아버지 딱 두사람이 탔다. 그런데 정말 너무 무서웠다. 나는 비명을 지르며 울어댔고 할아버지도 사색이 되어 '스돕, 스돕!'을 외치셨다. (아 할아버지가 5개국어를 하셨지만 영어 발음은 좋진 않으셨다. 사실 다른 언어는 내가 발음 평가를 할 능력이 안되고..크크) 다행히 바이킹에 탄 사람이 정말 아무도 없었기 때문에 놀이기구 아저씨는 바로 바이킹을 세워주셨다. ..나는 바지에 실례를 했고......할아버지 할머니는 '서울랜드'가 써있는 반바지를 어디선가 구해오셨다. 그땐 어려서 몰랐지만 아마 값은 엄청비싸고 품질은 저질인 그 후로 한번도 입어본적 없는 반바지였겠지. ..바지에 실례한 이야기를 하니 또 생각나는게 있는데 어린 시절 내 고래잡이수술-_-도 할아버지가 해주셨다. 사실 그게 뭔가 좀 잘못-_-하시는 바람에 나는 고래잡이 수술을 두번했다. 나중에 실뽑는-_-처치까지 하면 거기에 마취주사를 세번-_-맞아야 했다. 첫 수술때 거기에 마취주사를 맞는게 몹시 아팠던 통에 처음에 여기 감각있냐는 질문에 감각이 있으면 또 주사를 맞아야 할까봐 살짝 감각이 있었는데 없다고 거짓말을 했고......그 뒤에 일어난 일은 생략한다. 아 지금 생각해도 끔찍하다. 1층 병원에서 수술하고 3층 살림집에서 식구들 밥먹는 밥상 옆 침상에 누워있다가 마취 풀리면서 나는 아주 고래고래 소리를 질러대며 울었고.. 어머니한테 시끄럽다고 야단맞았다. 서러워서 더 울었던 거 같다. 고추가 아파 죽겠는데 운다고 더 야단을 맞다니. 음..이거 내 포경수술을 할아버지가 해주셨단게 기억나는 바람에 이제 소변볼때마다 할아버지가 생각날지도 모르겠다...? 아무튼 할아버지가 의사셨던 덕(?)에 이런저런 치료는 대부분 할아버지에게 받았고, 매년 온갖 예방접종을 다 맞았다. ..좀 안 맞았어도 괜찮았을 것 같은데. 하긴 어린 시절의 나는 결핵도 걸리고 비쩍 마르고 허약한 아이였다고 하기 때문에.. 더 주사를 많이 맞았는지도 모른다. 그리고 집에는 온갖종류의 상비약들이 있었는데, 사실 그 약들의 정체는 유통기한이 지난(!!) 약들이었다. 아 이름은 기억안나는데 효과는 좋은데 발암물질있다고 판매가 금지된 소독약과 연고(!!)도 있었다. 특히 그 연고는 다른 연고보다 효과가 확실히 좋았다고 한다. 그래서 가끔 의사들이 유통기한 지난 약을 팔거나 발암물질 있어서 판매금지된 약을 사용했다는 기사에 '니들 가족이면 그러겠냐'는 댓글을 보면 '..가족한테만 그러는데..'라는 생각을 하곤 했다. 내성발톱을 뽑거나, 런닝머신에서 양말만 신고 뛰다가(절대 이러지 마세요) 넘어지면서 발이 벨트에 빨려들어가 발바닥에 균열-_-이 생겨 꿰매야 할때도 나의 수술실은 할아버지댁 거실이었고 수술대는 어저께 신문이었다. 이제 철이 들어 마취주사의 고통정도는 참을 수 있게 된 손자는 의연하게 마취주사를 맞고 할아버지의 처치를 지켜보면서 발톱이라는 게 참 별로 힘이 없는 부위구나, 그냥 뺀찌로 잡고 뽑으면 쉽게 쑥 뽑히는구나, 살밑으로 발톱이 꽤 길구나, 발바닥 가죽은 꽤 두껍구나, 옛날 고래잡을 때는 안 그랬던거 같은데 요새 꿰매는 실과 바늘은 일체형으로 아예 붙어서 나오네? 같은 생각을 하곤했다. 그리고는 할아버지댁에 온 김에 장기를 두고 갔다. 내가 할아버지와 많은 시간을 보낸 것 중 중요한 것은 장기와 수영이 있는데, 장기는 할아버지가 내 스승이셨고 수영은 내가 할아버지의 스승이었다. 그리고 둘다 나중에는 청출어람이었다. 내가 할아버지에게 장기를 배운 것은 국민학교도 들어가기 전부터였는데, 할아버지댁 장기판은 할아버지가 직접 만드신 장기판이었다. 달력 뒤에 자를 대고 그은 장기판. 나중에는 장기알도 몇개 없어져서 초나라 졸 두개는 십원짜리 동전이 대신했고, 한나라 상은 백원짜리 동전이 대신했다. 그래서 할아버지께서는 백원짜리 한나라 상을 주고 초나라 졸 두개를 잡는 전략을 많이 쓰셨는데, ..동전으로 대체된 말을 빨리 없애버리기 위해서가 아니었을까 하는 생각도 든다. 할아버지는 어린 손자라도 절대 봐주는 게 없으셨다. 실력 차가 있어서 어릴 적에는 할아버지는 차포마상을 아예 떼고 두시거나, 쌍차와 포 하나를 떼고 두시거나 하셨지만 기물은 떼고 두셔도 두면서는 절대 봐주시는 게 없었다. 내가 실수를 하면 가차없이 내 차포를 잡아 먹으셨고 할아버지의 차 하나에 우변 전부가 털리는 꼴도 숱하게 당했다. 말에서 손을 떼려고 하면 '정말 그렇게 둘거야? 둘거야?'라고 물으시며 다시 생각할 기회는 주셨지만 일단 손을 떼고 나면 절대로 물러주는 법이 없으셨다. 말에서 손을 뗀 것은 수를 끝마친 것이며, 한번 둔 수는 되돌릴 수 없는 거니까. 그래서 나는 몇횐가의 명탐정코난에서 컴퓨터장기에 무르기를 넣으려던 동업자를 초심을 잃었다고 살해한 범인의 마음을 일부 이해한다.(?) (나는 게임을 이렇게 배워서 마눌님에게도 이런식으로 가르쳤는데.. 한번은 거의 차일뻔했다..) 크면서 나와 할아버지의 장기실력은 점점 비슷해져갔고, 내가 맞장기로 할아버지를 처음으로 이겼던 날 나는 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰며 좋아했고 할아버지는 손자의 그런 모습을 흐뭇하게 지켜보시기는 훼이크고, '승부는 삼세판이다, 1:1이니 한번 더해서 끝장을 봐야지!'라 하시며 집에가지 못하게 하셨다. (역시 너 게임 허접이란 말이 남자의 자존심을 가장 크게 건드는 일인듯) 집에 가야 하는데 나와 할아버지의 장기가 끝나기를 기다리던 식구들은 아이고 가야되요 다음에 해요 할머니는 애들 가야 된데는데 뭐하는 거냐고 타박을 하셨지만 할아버지의 의지는 굳건하셨고 나도 승부를 보고 싶어서 굳이 한판을 더했다. 그리고 졌다....크크크크크 그 다음에는 우리집에 할아버지가 오셨을 때도 장기를 두기 위해 할아버지가 장기판을 직접 만들어 주셨는데, 바둑판에다가 하얀 페인트칠을 하고 그 위에 자로 장기판을 그린 물건이었다. 그 바둑판을 개조한 장기판으로 할아버지와 나는 많은 장기를 두었고, 아직도 본가 내 옛날방 구석에 남아있다. 그 바둑판 엄청 큰거여서 굉장히 무겁다..아마 5KG는 더 나가지 싶다. 내가 국민학교 4학년이 되던 무렵, 할아버지는 갑자기 수영을 배우고 싶다고 하셨다. 나는 어릴적에 수영을 배워서 자유형 평영 배영 접영의 형태는 흉내낼 수 있었다. 뭐 사실 할아버지가 수영을 전혀 못하신건 아니었지만.. 아무튼 일단 나는 일요일이면 할아버지와 함께 수영장에 갔다. 할아버지는 약통을 자르고 고무줄을 달아 만든 수제 오리손, 오리발을 만들어 장착하고 수영하시다가 안전요원에게 제지를 당하셨고 손목에 약뚜껑으로 만든 손목시계 비슷?한 물건으로 한번 왕복하실 때마다 한칸씩 움직여 오늘 수영한 거리가 얼마나 되나 기록하는 물건을 만드셨다. 나한테도 주셨지만 나는 사용하기 싫었지... 수영할 때 걸리적거리기도 하고, 비주얼도 촌스러웠으니까. 아무튼 거기서 할아버지께 자유형은 이렇게 하고 배영은 이렇게 하고 평영은 이렇게 하고 설명도 하고 시범도 보이곤 했는데, 지금 생각해보니 할아버지는 손자인 내게 배웠다-_-기 보다는 독학하셨다고 해야 할 것 같다. 내가 할아버지한테 특히 열심히 가르쳐드렸던건 자유형인데 할아버지는 평영을 주로 연습하셨으니까. 아무튼 할아버지와 함께 처음 수영다니기 시작할 무렵에는 내가 더 빠르게 더 오래 수영을 할 수 있었던 건 사실이다. 그러나 할아버지는 이후 십오년 넘게 자주 가실때는 매주, 3일에 한번, 뜸하실 때도 적어도 한달에 한번은 거르지 않고 수영을 다니셨다. 나중에는 일어 영어 원서로 된 수영교본을 가져다가 번역을 하시는 지경에 이르렀고 이번 주에는 쉬지않고 2KM, 4KM를 수영했다고 자랑하곤 하셨다. 지금 생각하면 할아버지가 평영만을 연습하셨던 것은.. 수영이 취미시기도 했지만 위급한 상황에서 '생존'을 염두에 두셨던 건 아닌가 싶다. 아니 할아버지 성격상 아마 그랬을 것이다. 속도따윈 필요가 없고, 체력소모가 적고 가장 오래 멀리 갈 수 있는 영법을 익히고자 하셨을 것이다. (내가 어릴 적 수영을 배운 것도 물에 빠져도 배가 침몰해도 헤엄쳐서 나올 수 있는 법을 배워야 한다-_-는 지극히 실용적인 이유였으니까.) 손자가 점점 더 저질체력이 되는 동안 할아버지는 75세가 넘어가시면서도 수영을 몇KM씩 하실 수 있었고 머리가 굵은 손자는 장기에서 할아버지에게 이기는 일이 점점더 많아졌다. 할아버지가 워낙 정정하시고 수영도 다니고 하시면서 큰아버지는 이거 내가 아버지보다 먼저 죽는거 아냐? 라고 농을 하시기도 했는데 나는 '어쩌면 진짜 그럴지도 몰라..'라고 생각하기도 했다. 나는 할아버지가 100살은 사실 줄 알았다. 내가 증조외할아버지(할머니의 아버지)를 기억하는 만큼 내 아들도 할아버지를 기억할 수 있을 줄 알았다. 아직 내 아들은 할아버지를 기억한다. 왕할아버지. 왕할아버지네 집에 가는 건 싫어했다. 명절에 거기 갔다가 독감예방주사를 맞았었거든. 그러나 4살때 주사를 맞았던 집에 계시던 왕할아버지를 5살인 지금은 아직 기억하지만, 커서도 기억할 수 있을까? 할아버지 상을 치르느라 서울에 올라왔던 내게 아들이 물었다. 어제가 금요일이었어? (지방근무를 하느라 금요일에 올라와 일요일에 내려간다) 아니 왕할아버지가 하늘나라 가셔서 할아버지 보내드리는 일 하느라 왔어.. 다음날 아들이 아빠 어디갔냐고 물어보는 말에 아빠 할아버지가 하늘나라 가셔서 일보러 가셨다고 대답하자 우리 아들이 이렇게 말했단다. '왕할아버지 어제 하늘나라 벌써 가셨는데 왜 오늘 또 가셔?' 이 얘기를 아들이 기억할 수 있을까. 나는 기억하겠지만. 저는 할머니에 대한 추억이 많아요.
생각하면 그리워서 눈물은 나지만 가슴따뜻한 그런 기억들.
