로버트 저메키스와 밥 게일이 영화 [백 투 더 퓨처]의 대본을 완성한 것은 영화 개봉 4년 전인 1981년이었다고 합니다. 하지만 두 사람의 생각과는 달리 처음에 이 대본은 영화사들로부터는 뜨뜻미지근한 반응을 얻었다고 합니다. 아주 재미가 없지는 않을 것 같은데 그렇다고 한눈에 "이거다!"싶은 것도 없는...한마디로 애매한 느낌이라는 것이 영화사들의 반응이었습니다. 하마터면 못 볼 수도 있었던 영화...[백 투 더 퓨처]... 대본은 파라마운트에서 유니버설로, 유니버설에서 20세기폭스로, 20세기폭스에서 워너브라더스로, 워너브라더스에서 디즈니로 뺑뺑이를 도는데 어느 한 곳에서도 선뜻 나서서 "오케이! 이거 갑시다!"하는 곳이 없었습니다. 어떤 영화사는 타임머신 영화는 흥행이 잘 안된다며 몸을 사리고 디즈니 같은 곳은 엄마와 아들 사이에 로맨스 분위기가 나오는 것에 대해서 난색을 표시하고...대본을 완성했을 때만 해도 당장 제작사들이 서로 자신들이 영화하 하겠다고 나서고 금방 영화가 크랭크 인 할 것 같았는데 예상과는 달리 출구는 안 보이는데 일의 진행은 계속 다람쥐 쳇바퀴를 돌다 보니 저메키스와 게일 두 사람 다 슬슬 지쳐가고 있었습니다. 그러자 일단 로버트 저메키스가 먼저 결단을 내립니다. [백 투 더 퓨처]를 영화화 하려면 자신이 먼저 흥행 감독으로서의 잠재력이 있다는 것을 증명하는 편이 일이 될 가능성이 높을 것 같아서 밥 게일에게 자신에게 다른 영화 제의가 들어오면 우선 그 영화를 먼저 찍겠다고 양해를 구합니다. 그 영화가 평이 좋고 흥행이 잘 되면 자연스럽게 [백 투 터 퓨처] 프로젝트도 힘을 받게 될 것이니 그때 [백 투 더 퓨처]의 영화화를 다시 추진하자고 설득을 한 것이지요. 때마침 20세기폭스에서 로버트 저메키스에게 영화를 하나 맡깁니다. 그 영화의 제목은 [로맨싱 스톤(원제: Romancing the Stone)]...마이클 더글라스와 케서린 터너가 주연을 맏은 코미디 어드벤처 장르였습니다. 그런데 이 영화도 촬영이 순조롭지 못했습니다. 무엇보다도 주연인 케서린 터너와 로버트 저메키스가 서로 일하는 스타일이 잘 맞지 않았습니다. 케서린 터너는 로버트 저메키스가 배우보다는 특수효과나 촬영 쪽에만 신경을 쓰는 초보 감독처럼 생각이 되었던 거지요. 거기다가 20세기폭스는 사실 [로맨싱 스톤]에는 별 기대가 없었고 비슷한 시기에 제작하고 있던 실베스터 스탤론과 컨츄리 가수 돌리 파튼이 주연을 하는 영화 [귀향(원제: Rhinestone)]에 기대를 걸고 있었습니다. 그러니까 정작 에이스는 따로 있었던 셈이었죠. 마침내 [로맨싱 스톤] 영화 촬영이 다 끝나고 아직 완성본이 아닌 편집본을 시사했을 때 폭스사의 한 간부는 속으로 "이 영화는 절대로 영화관에 걸릴 일이 없겠군..."하고 생각했다고 합니다. 영화가 뭔가 그 당시의 흥행하는 스타일과는 맞지가 않는다는 게 영화사 간부들의 중론이었습니다. 그런데 영화 흥행은 며느리도 모른다고 했나요? 그렇게 기대를 했던 스탤론과 파튼의 [귀향]은 죽을 제대로 쒔는데 오히려 별 기대가 없었던 [로맨싱 스톤]이 큰 히트를 기록하면서 로버트 저메키스 감독의 주가가 단숨에 치솟습니다. 약 9백만 불에서 천만 불 정도의 제작비가 들었던 [로맨싱 스톤]은 미국 내에서만 7천 6백만 불 정도의 흥행 수입을 기록하며 큰 성공을 거둔 것이었습니다. ([귀향] 미국내 흥행성적: 2천 1백만 불...) 상황이 이렇게 되자 로버트 저메키스는 지난 4년간 자신과 밥이 쓴 대본에 대해서 별다른 관심을 기울이지 않았던 영화사에게 절대로 영화를 제작할 기회를 줄 생각이 없었고 결국 처음부터 자신들의 대본에 대해 좋은 평가를 해줬던 스티븐 스필버그에게 영화 제작의 기회를 주기로 합니다. 스필버그 역시 E.T.의 대성공으로 할리우드에서의 입지가 탄탄해진 상황이었습니다. 스필버그는 다시 유니버설과 접촉을 했고 유니버설에서 최소한의 간섭만 하는 조건으로 자신이 executive producer가 되어서 영화를 제작하기로 합니다. 먼지만 더께로 덮여있던 [백 투 더 퓨처]가 마침내 저메키스와 게일이 그렇게 바라마지않던 그린라이트를 받는 순간이었습니다... 로맨싱 스톤은 인디아나 존스류의 영화에 로맨스를 더한 영화였는데, 후속편이 왜 없었는지 궁금해지더군요.
뭐 당시에는 후속편을 잘 하지 않는 분위기이기는 했습니다만....
알고보니 나일의 대모험이라는 속편이 있었군요. 본것 같은 느낌도 납니다.
Rhinestone은 실버스타 스텔론 전성기라서 어지간하면 알 수 있을 것 같은데 처음 듣는 것을 보니 정말 망했나 보군요.
