"당신을 사랑했으니까" 서머셋 몸의 소설 '인생의 베일'은 키티라는 여인을 주인공으로 이야기를 전개해요. 부와 명예라는 관점에서 모든 것을 생각하는 어머니 아래에서 자란 그녀는, 너무 많은 조건들을 고려한 나머지 혼기를 놓치게 되요. 식어가는 어머니의 기대와, 먼저 결혼할 가능성이 높아진 여동생과의 비교가 부담되던 도중 세균학자인 월터가 자신에게 고백을 하자 프로포즈를 받아들여요. 그리고는 월터가 일하는 홍콩으로 떠나지만 키티의 마음 속에 월터에 대한 사랑은 존재하지 않았어요. 월터가 키티를 끔찍히 위해주었음에도 불구하고 말이지요. 그러던 도중 키티는 홍콩 총독부 차관보인 찰스와 만나 격렬한 사랑에 빠집니다. 소설은 두 사람의 밀회로 문을 열어젖혀요. 그리고 바로 그 밀회가 월터에게 목격되었다는 암시를 풍기며 서사가 약동하기 시작해요. 월터는 콜레라가 창궐한 중국의 도시, 메이탄푸에 책임자로 자원해요. 키티에게는 함께 가자고 합니다. 아니면 자신과 이혼하고 찰스와 결혼하거나요. 키티는 찰스가 아내와 이혼하고 자신과 결혼하리라는 확신에 가득차서 달려가요. 그렇지만 찰스는 아내와 이혼할 생각이 없다고 딱 잘라 말하지요. 키티와의 관계는 즐거움에 초점이 맞추어져 있으며, 자신은 사회적인 위험을 감수할 생각이 없다고요. 절망에 빠진 키티는 월터와 메이탄푸로 가겠노라 말합니다. 월터는 이 모든 전개를 예측했던 것마냥 준비를 끝마쳐둔 상태였고요. 위에 인용한 내용은 월터가 모든 것을 알고 있다고 키티에게 이야기를 하며 토해내는 표현들이에요. "하지만 당신을 사랑했어"라는 월터의 언어에 뿌리를 박은 슬픔이 처절하게 느껴지지만, 키티의 심리가 이해가 안 되는 것도 아니에요. 예전에 알료사님이 티타임에 개에 대한 소설 인용구들을 올렸던 것이 기억나요. 그 중 기억나는 것은 개를 '사랑하는 기계'에 비유한 미셸 우옐백의 표현이었지요. 안타깝게도 인간은 개가 아니에요. 인간은 누군가가 자신을 엄청나게 좋아한다고 해서, 자연스럽게 상대방을 그만큼 좋아하지는 않아요. 오히려 상대방을 더 쉽게 여기게 되는 경우도 있지요. 달리 말하자면, 인간의 사랑이 보답받는 방식은 개만도 못한 경우가 많아요. 키티는 찰스의 달콤함에 속았을 뿐이라는 좌절과, 자신에게 헌신적이던 월터가 마모되어 돌아선 상실감에 괴로워해요. 메이탄푸에서의 생활은 누군가의 죽음을 반복해서 직면하고, 자신도 죽을지 모른다는 불안감에 떠는 순간들이었어요. 키티는 사람들을 구하기 위해 헌신하는 수녀들과 함께 하면서 차츰 괴로움을 치유해요. 자신이 월터에게 행한 잘못을 뉘우치기도 하고요. 그렇지만 월터에 대한 사랑이 생겨나지는 않아요. 저에게는 키티의 미안함이 자기 자신의 잘못을 떨쳐내고 싶은 마음의 발로로 느껴졌어요. 월터는 자신이 키티를 미워하는 것이 아니며, 너를 사랑한 자기 자신을 경멸한다는 태도로 일관하고요. 그리고 자신을 혹사시키며 콜레라에 대한 연구를 계속하던 끝에 숨을 거둡니다. 일종의 자살이었어요. 죽기 전에 키티에게 마지막으로 남긴 말은 "죽은 건 개였다"라는 말이었지요. 비록 소설에서는 "죽은 건 개였다"라는 문장이 지니는 의미가 앞에서 제가 언급한 사랑의 방식과는 다른 의미로 정리되어요. 그렇지만 저에게는 월터의 마지막 말이 꼭 자신이 사랑한 방식에 대한 후회로 읽혀지더라고요. 월터가 옳고, 키티가 나빴다는 단순한 방식으로만 상황이 받아들여지지는 않았어요. 그냥 개에게는 개의 방식이 있고, 인간에게는 인간의 방식이 있는 것이라고 느껴요. 우리는 인간에 대한 이상화 된 기대가 아닌, 현실적인 이해를 바탕으로 타인에게 접근해야 한다고 생각해요. 인간에게는 각자의 삶과 사랑의 역사가 있고 거기에서 비롯된 감정의 습관들이 존재해요. 사회적 각본은 초창기에나 유용할 뿐, 시간이 지나면서 모든 관계는 독특함을 품게 되지요. 그 독특성을 감당할 수 있는가와 없는가, 그리고 변화의 가능성이 존재하는가를 면밀하게 고려하는 것은 어려운 작업이에요. 때로는 자신이 감당할 수 없는 관계였다는 것을 깨닫게 되기도 하겠지요. 물론 그럼에도 불구하고, 그 모든 것을 알면서도 누군가를 사랑할 수 밖에 없는 순간들은 우리에게 존재해요. 열병으로서의 사랑이란 본디 그런 것이니까요. 아마 월터도 그랬으리라 생각해요. 그러나 현실로 그 간극을 확인했을 때 무너져 내리는 것은 어쩔 수 없었겠지요. 그러니 키티를 미워하기 보다는, 키티를 사랑한 '스스로'를 경멸하려는 월터의 태도는 안쓰럽기까지 해요. 소설 내에서 왜 그렇게까지 월터가 키티를 사랑했는가에 대한 제반 정보는 전혀 나오지 않아요. 그러나 세상에는 그러한 마음도 존재한다는 것은, 우리 모두가 경험의 우물을 들여다보면 알 수 있지요. #2 pp. 301-303 "월터는 당신과 나 때문에 죽었어요." 그가 그녀의 손을 잡았지만 그녀는 그것을 홱 뿌리쳤다. "제발 가세요." 그녀가 흐느꼈다. "그게 당신이 지금 내게 할 수 있는 전부예요. 난 당신을 증오하고 경멸해요. 월터는 당신보다 열 배는 더 가치 있었어요. 그걸 보지 못했으니 내가 큰 바보였어. 가세요. 가요." 그가 다시 무슨 말을 하려고 하자 그녀는 벌떡 일어나 방으로 들어갔다. 그가 그녀를 쫓아왔고 들어오면서 본능적으로 신중함을 발휘해 덧창을 닫았기 때문에 그들은 거의 암흑 속에 있었다. "이런 식으로 당신과 끝내고 싶지 않아." (중략) 그가 그녀의 얼굴을 찾았지만 그녀는 고개를 돌렸다. 그가 그녀의 입술을 찾아 헤맸다. 그녀는 그가 무슨 말을 하는지 알 수 없었다. 토막 난, 뜨거운 사랑의 말들. 그의 팔이 그녀를 단단히 끌어안자 그녀는 잃어버렸다가 집으로 무사히 돌아온 아이가 된 것 같았다. 그녀가 희미하게 신음했다. 눈을 감은 채, 눈물에 젖은 얼굴로. 그때 그가 그녀의 입술을 찾았고, 그녀의 입술을 누르는 그의 입술의 압력이 신의 불꽃처럼 그녀의 몸속을 뚫고 들어왔다. 극치의 황홀감. 그녀는 활활 불타올라서 변신이라도 할 것처럼 벌겋게 달아올랐다. 그녀의 꿈속에서, 바로 그 꿈속에서 그녀는 그 환희를 맛본 적이 있었다. 그는 그녀를 어떻게 하려는 걸까? 그녀는 알 수 없었다. 그녀는 여자가 아니었고 그녀의 인격은 와해되었다. 그녀는 단지 욕망이었다. 그가 그녀를 안아 올렸다. 그의 팔에 안긴 그녀는 너무 가벼웠다. 그가 그녀를 옮기는 동안 그녀는 사랑에 흠뻑 취해 필사적으로 그에게 매달렸다. 그녀의 머리가 베개 위로 떨어졌고 그의 입술이 그녀의 입술을 파고들었다. 키티는 자신이 메이탄푸에서의 경험과, 월터의 죽음을 통해서 달라졌다고 생각했어요. 하지만 홍콩으로 돌아와서 다시 찰스를 만나고, 다시 사랑한다고 속삭이는 찰스에게 몸과 마음을 맡기지요. 참으로 인간적인 모습이라고 느꼈어요. 그 수많은 경험을 거치고서도, 다짐에 다짐을 또 하고서도 다시 관성처럼 넘어가는 모습이라니요. 월터가 죽기 전에 내뱉은 말과 함께, 소설에서 가장 마음에 드는 장면이었어요. 그래 이게 내가 봐 왔던 인간이지 하면서 무릎을 치게 되는 장면이었지요. 그 뒤에 이어지는 키티의 자기혐오도 함께요. 인생의 베일은 누군가에게는 매우 심심한 소설일 거예요. 문장은 쉽게 읽히고, 서사 구조는 단순해요. 중간중간 수녀들의 삶을 묘사하면서 풍겨지는 '욕망의 초월' 같은 소재는 식상하게 느껴질 정도에요. 하지만 찰스의 비열함, 월터의 자기파괴적 태도, 키티의 불안정함에 대한 핍진한 묘사들이 마음에 들었어요. 인간에 대한 지나친 찬양도, 지나친 냉소도 아닌 딱 그 정도의 인간 군상의 감정들에 대한 세세한 서술들이요. 그러면서도 소설의 말미에서 키티가 아버지의 고통을 진심으로 위로하는 모습은 딱 한걸음만큼 앞으로 나아간 느낌이라 현실적이라는 느낌을 받았고요. 홍콩을 떠나기 전에 이죽거리던 찰스의 말처럼, 키티의 앞날이 그녀의 다짐만큼이나 안정적이고 밝을지는 모르겠어요. 작가는 마지막에 평화의 길을 운운했지만. 글쎄요. 자신의 마음 속에서 헤메는 키티를 보며 저는 한나 아렌트를 떠올렸어요. 아렌트는 저서 '인간의 조건'에서 인간 삶의 영역을 노동, 제작, 행위로 나누었어요. 이 중 행위 영역은 말과 행동으로 이루어지는, 인간의 사회적 삶 혹은 인간 관계를 칭하는 것으로 볼 수 있어요. 물론 아렌트는 그의 사상을 관통하는 주제인 정치적 삶을 염두에 두고 행위라는 표현을 사용했다고 생각해요. 하지만 저는 그런 함의보다는 아렌트가 행위 영역에 관해 기술한 내용이 인상적이었어요. 인간들 사이의 상호작용으로 이루어지는 행위 영역은 언제나 불안정하고 역동적이에요. 새로운 사람이 출현할 때마다, 기존에 있던 사람이 퇴장할 때마다 전체의 배치는 변동해요. 여기에 인간의 마음이 원래 지니고 있는 불안정성과 충동이 더해져서 언제나 혼란으로 들끓지요. 인간적인 교류를 나누는 집단을 면밀히 관찰해보신 분은 많이들 동의하시리라 생각해요. 당장 이 사이트만 하더라도 사람들 사이의 감정을 면밀히 추적해본다면 복잡한 양상들이 펼쳐지겠지요. 행위 영역에 내재한 역동의 결과, 우리의 많은 관계는 파괴되기도 해요. 고쳐서 사용할 수 있는 기계나 도구와는 달리 인간의 관계와 마음은 회복이 쉽지 않아요. 우리는 파괴된 관계를 되돌리지 못한 채 그대로 흘려보내기도 하지만, 망각의 힘을 빌리지 않는 이상 파괴된 관계의 잔해들은 마음 한구석에 상처로 남아있겠지요. 돌이킬 수 없는 과거 뿐만이나 미래도 마찬가지에요. 이 순간 나와 마음을 나눈 이 사람이 미래에도 같은 마음일까요? 혹은 내 마음은 항상 그대로일까요? 역동을 고려하면 미래는 언제나 불확실할 수밖에 없어요. 그럼에도 불구하고 아렌트는 자신의 이론적 틀 내에서, 행위의 불안정성을 치유할 수 있는 두 가지 요소를 함께 언급해요. 과거를 향해서는 용서를. 미래를 위해서는 약속을 제시하지요. 혹자는 참으로 단순한 논리라고 생각할지도 몰라요. 초등학교 시절 도덕책에서나 나올만한 이야기라고요. 하지만 막상 우리가 삶에서 용서와 약속을 실천하기가 얼마나 쉽지 않은가를 떠올려보세요. 그리고 과거를 용서했을 때, 미래에 대한 약속을 지켰을 때 우리에게 부여되는 안정과 중심을 떠올리고요. 살면서 흔들리는 것은 어쩔 수 없겠지만, 용서와 약속을 통해 조금씩 안정적인 관계와 마음을 가꾸어 나갈 수는 있을 거예요. 키티가 그러하기를 바라요. 우리 모두도 마찬가지고요.
