콜 오브 듀티는 1편이 2003년에 발매되어 14년동안 15편이 나왔습니다. FPS 프랜차이즈 중에서 독보적인 역사를 자랑하고 있죠. 먼저 이 장르에 대해 기준점을 제시했었던 메달 오브 아너조차 서서히 콜 오브 듀티의 영향력에서 벗어나지 못했다가 시리즈가 끝장난 걸 생각하면 대단한 겁니다. 지난 해에 현대전의 모던 워페어1 리마스터를 선보였죠. 그리고 이번엔 좀 더 과거로, 시리즈의 기원으로 되돌아갔습니다. 바로 2차 세계 대전이죠. 재미있는 점은 그 선택을 콜 오브 듀티의 3대 개발사 중에서 가장 역사가 짧고, 한번도 2차 세계 대전 배경의 게임을 내본 적이 없는 슬레지해머가 맡았다는 점입니다. 그리고 후술하겠지만, 그럼에도 철저하게 시리즈의 기원으로 되돌아가는 데에도 성공하긴 했습니다. 우선 캠페인에 대해 이야기해보면 시리즈의 기원으로 되돌아갔지만, 대신 여러 배경의 많은 주인공을 택하지 않았습니다. 한 명의 주인공에만 집중되어 그의 행적만을 따라갑니다. 이러한 선택은 이야기가 집중하기 좋고, 플레이어가 더욱 감정을 이입할 여지가 많다는 점이 장점입니다. 그리고 최소한 WWII는 캐릭터를 활용할 줄 아는 게임입니다. 물론 클리셰로 가득한건 저에게도 단점이었습니다만, 최소한 등장 인물 대부분이 엔딩을 보고 난 후에도 기억에 남을 정도의 묘사는 할당되어 있습니다. 특히 사소하게라도 등장 인물 간의 갈등이나 주인공의 고뇌가 들어갔다는 점에서 최소한 인피니트 워페어나 배틀필드1에 비해선 나았습니다.(그러나 최근 나온 FPS 게임 중에선 타이탄폴2가 가장 좋았고요.) 또한 배틀필드1이 '모든 것을 끝내기 위한 전쟁'이 얼마나 허망한지 표현했다면, WWII는 전쟁 범죄와 전쟁 속에서 느낄 감정에 대해서 나쁘지 않게 묘사되고 있습니다. 특히 캐릭터에 생기가 있다 보니 꽤 설득력도 있어요. 캠페인을 플레이하는 데에 있어선 가장 눈에 띄는 변화가 역사적 배경만 시리즈의 기원으로 되돌아간 것이 아니라, 멀티와는 별개로 자동 회복되지 않는 고전적인 체력 게이지 시스템을 택했다는 점을 들 수 있습니다. 그리고 이러한 선택은 심각한 단점은 아니지만, 그렇다고 장점은 아닙니다. 굳이 익숙한데다가, 멀티와는 다른 시스템을 택할 필요가 전혀 없었던 것 같네요. 대신 새로 추가된 점은 나쁘지 않습니다. 수시로 등장하는 아군 구출 등의 스크립트 이벤트나, 소대원의 고유 능력으로 도움을 받는 등의 추가점은 소소해도 좋은 변화입니다. 레벨 디자인은 개발사의 전작에선 일부 리뷰어들이 호평했을 정도로 콜 오브 듀티답지 않은 비선형적인 디자인이 꽤 보였는데, WWII도 마찬가지긴 하나 편차가 조금 큽니다. 전 어드밴스드 워페어보다 더 강조했으면 했는데 아쉽더군요. 마지막으로 캠페인의 길이는 대략 6시간 정도였는데 완급 조절이 잘 된 편이라서 특정 구간에서 시간이 많이 소모되거나 급전개가 나오지 않아서 만족할만한 구석은 있습니다. 대신 다시 플레이할만한 면도 거의 없습니다. 다음으로는 좀비 모드를 들 수 있는데, 좀비 모드도 시리즈에서 점점 차지하는 비중이 커지더니 이젠 유명 배우까지 섭외되어 정성껏 제작하는 핵심 컨텐츠가 되었죠. 그 점에서 WWII도 마찬가지입니다. 어차피 이 모드의 기본은 4인 코옵 디펜스 모드고, 처음 좀비 모드를 선보인 월드 앳 워와 비교하면 거의 변화가 없지만, 여전히 가볍게 즐기긴 좋은 모드입니다. 다만 친구와 같이 플레이하는 게 아니라면 모드의 특성상 재미가 반감되기 쉽습니다. 멀티플레이는 캠페인과 비교해서 같은 게임인가 싶을 정도로 방향부터 다릅니다. 캠페인은 노골적으로 초창기의 콜 오브 듀티를 그대로 옮겨왔다면, 반대로 멀티플레이는 모던 워페어부터 이어진 방향성을 그대로 유지하고 있어요. 단지 게임의 템포에 있어선 적당히 느릿느릿합니다. 대신 2차 세계 대전이란 배경에 일관되게 유지되던 방향이 적절한가에 대해선 전 부정적으로 봅니다. 특히 한발씩 직접 장전하며 쏴야 하는 구식 총기가 잔뜩 나오는 게임인데 막상 멀티플레이는 대부분이 2~30발짜리 탄창을 화끈하게 비울 수 있는 기관단총이나 어울리만한 근접전 위주로 흘러갑니다. 그렇다고 맵 디자인으로 보완했으면 모르겠는데, 콜 오브 듀티는 여전히 캠핑과 저격 위주로 게임이 돌아가는 걸 용납하지 않기 때문에 딱히 달라진 것도 없습니다. 거기다가 슬레지해머부터 시작된 랜덤 박스는 점점 도가 지나쳐서 보기만 해도 짜증이 날 정도고, 그렇다고 정성껏 박스의 내용물을 채웠으면 이해라도 했겠는데 정말 형편 없어요. 그 대표적인 예로 경쟁작인 배틀필드조차 랜덤 박스에 밸런스에 영향을 주는 장비는 넣지 않았는데, WWII는 4에 비하면 보상 컨텐츠가 빈약했던 1보다도 부족해요. 숫자로 수치나 자랑할 바에는 플레이어가 재미있게 쓸만한 총기를 한 자루라도 더 넣어주는 게 좋을 겁니다. 기술적인 면에서는 완성도 높은 컷신은 상상 이상으로 훌륭했습니다만, 그래픽과 사운드는 그저 그랬습니다. 특히 사운드는 FPS의 핵심인 총기 격발음은 기억에 남는 게 하나도 없어요. 이 분야에서 업계 최고라 할 수 있는 DICE와 비교하는 건 잔인한 짓이고, DICE와 비교하지 않더라도 부족해요. 그 둘을 제외하면 특별하게 문제라고 할만한 구석은 없었습니다. 대신 모던 워페어부터 생태계를 유지하고 있었던 PC판은 액티비전의 바보 같은 DLC 정책, 개발사의 부족한 최적화와 사후 관리, 수많은 경쟁작의 등장으로 이미 초토화된지 오래입니다. 멀티플레이는 물론이고, 좀비 모드조차 PS4 쪽이 더 나았어요. 제가 이번 작은 어쩌다 보니 선물 받은 것까지 해서 PC판과 PS4판을 다 갖게 되서 직접 확인하고 말하는 겁니다. 간단하게 요약하자면 매년 나오는 콜 오브 듀티가 놀라울 정도의 혁신을 들고 나올 리도 없고, 완성도에 있어서 세 곳의 개발사가 3년동안 죽자살자 찍어내는 게임인만큼 굳이 매년 살 정도의 완성도를 보여주지 못하는 것도 맞다고 봐요. 그리고 WWII도 마찬가지입니다. 대신 최근에 2차 세계 대전 배경의 게임이 아예 없다 보니 역사적 배경에 매력을 느끼신다면 선택지가 없을테고, WWII가 심각한 결함이 있을 정도로 부족하진 않아요. 만일 원래 이 시리즈의 멀티플레이나 좀비 모드도 재미있게 즐기셨던 분이라면 추천할만 합니다. 그 외에는 최소한 작년에 나온 인피니트 워페어보단 훨씬 낫다라는 게 제 평가입니다.
