안녕하세요. 3편에 들어섰는데 아직 개강은 하지도 않았네요...ㅋㅋ 좀더 속도를 내야겠습니다. 그나저나 지난 글의 조회수가 비정상적으로 높은데 오류가 있는걸까요? 2015년 10월 26일 월요일, 그 날을 아직도 기억합니다. 독일 대학에서 처음으로 수업을 들었던 날이거든요. 지난 편 말미에 언급했지만, 제가 첫학기에 들어야 할 수업은 포어레숭(대형강의)으로 Transkontinentale Europäische Geschichte in der Moderne (근대의 간대륙적 유럽사)와 Kulturgeschichte in der Frühen Neuzeit (초기 근대의 문화사)였고, 세미나로는 Probleme zur Forschung der Weimarer Republik (바이마르 공화국 연구의 여러 문제들), Globalgeschichte (지구사), Das Zarenreich und Deutschland im Ersten Weltkrieg (1차 세계대전 당시의 러시아제국과 독일)이 있었습니다. 여기에 입학 조건으로 붙었던 세미나 Das Reich in der Frühen Neuzeit (초기 근대의 신성로마제국)도 수강해야 했습니다. 수업을 듣고 구두시험을 봐야하는 포어레숭 2개, 세미나에 참여하고 20쪽 분량의 하우스아르바이트(페이퍼)를 써야했던게 4개였던 것이죠. 그렇습니다. 전 별 생각없이 한국에서 수강신청할때와 비슷하게 했던 것입니다. 한국에서 한 과목에 3학점 정도 하고 한 학기에 18학점 정도 들었으니, 별로 빡셀것이라고는 생각하지 않았습니다. 아니, 물론 처음으로 외국 대학에서 수업을 듣게 됐으니 당연히 빡세긴 할거라고 생각했지만, 적어도 제가 무리하게 수강신청을 한다는 생각은 하지 못했습니다. 이 생각은 첫 학기 내내 무참히 깨지게 됩니다. 10월 26일 첫날의 수업은 초기 근대의 신성로마제국에 관한 세미나였어요. 아 참, 미리 말씀드리는게 나을 것 같은데, 저는 역사학에 관심을 가진 이후로 쭉 근현대사에 집중했습니다. 학부 초창기에는 고대사나 중세사도 보긴 했고, (특히 20세기 중반들어서부터 프랑스에서) 중세사에 관한 흥미로운 연구들이 있어서 제대하고 나서도 중세사는 좀 보긴 했지만, 어쨌든 제 주 관심사는 언제나 근현대사였습니다. 그래서 첫 날 수업을 듣는 초기 근대는 저한테 매우 낯선 분야였어요. 초기 근대도 어쨌든 근대니까 별다를거 없지 않냐고 반문하실 수도 있을테지만, 정말 너무 너무 너무 다릅니다. 이 수업의 주제는 신성로마제국을 필두로 한 300여 개가 넘는 (현재 독일 영토에 있었던) 독립적인 영주들의 영토를 다루는 것이었습니다. 당연히 이걸 일반적인 정치사 다루듯이 시간순서대로 검토할 수는 없고, 이 느슨한 제국이 어떤 식으로 계속 작동될 수 있었는지, 그 안에서 종교와 문화적 의례가 어떤 역할을 했는지 등에 대해서 읽고 토론을 하는 수업이었습니다. 근데 마치 우리나라 학생들이 조선시대에 대해서 초중고등학교에서 배워서 딱히 엄청난 관심사가 있는건 아니어도 대충 알고있듯이, 독일 학생들은 (이건 입학 조건으로 붙었던 학부 세미나였기 때문에 독일 학부생들과 같이 들었습니다) 이 시대에 대해서 이미 대강 알고 있었습니다. 당연히 수업에서 깊이 있는 논문 하나를 읽어도 흡수하는 역량이 다르겠죠? 근데 이건 학기를 거치면서 느끼게 된 바이고, 첫날 제가 느낀 것은 이런게 아니었습니다. 제가 세미나 시작하자마자 느낀 거는 "선생님 말이 너무 빠르다"였습니다. 그 선생님은 몇 년 전에 Münster(뮌스터)에서 박사논문을 쓰신 젊은 박사였는데, 젊어서 그런지 말이 정말 정말 빨랐습니다. 그리고 세미나답게 돌아가면서 자기 소개를 하는데, 학생들 말은 더 빠르더군요 ㅡㅡ 어느나라나 그렇지만, 보통 교수들은 말을 또박또박 발음하는 편이고 학생들은 발음이 뭉개지기도 하고 빠르잖아요. 자기소개를 하는데 거짓말 안하고 반은 못알아듣겠더군요. 사실 돌아가면서 자기소개를 하는데 제 차례가 다가올수록 심장이 떨렸습니다 -.- 말을 더듬더듬 하는 내가 얘네한테 얼마나 바보처럼 보일까 싶으면서요. 어쨌든 제 차례가 왔고 저는 말했습니다. "내 이름은 ooo이고 한국에서 왔다. 석사로 입학했는데 입학조건으로 이 세미나를 듣는게 붙어서 듣게 되었다". 사실 뒤에도 몇 문장 더 말한 것 같은데 뭐라고 중얼거렸는지 기억도 안 납니다. 나중에 몇주 지나면서 다른 세미나들도 접하고 나서야 느낀거지만, 이 세미나의 젊은 선생님은 좀 특이했습니다. 독일 대학의 세미나에서는 보통 한 학기동안 학생들이 번갈아가면서 발표를 합니다. 매주 특정한 주제가 있고 학생이 그 주제를 담당해서 발표를 하는 것이죠 (학생이 너무 많아서 어쩔 수 없는 경우를 제외하고는 대부분 한 학생이 하나의 발표를 담당합니다. 학생이 너무 많으면 두명까지 같이하는 경우는 봤는데, 세명 이상 같이 하는 경우는 보지 못했습니다). 이건 제가 알고있는 바로는 원래 독일의 시스템은 아니었고, 1999년 쯤 유럽의 대학들이 서로 시스템을 호환가능하도록 만들기 위해 체결한 볼로냐협약에서 비롯된 것입니다. 이를테면 프랑스 학부를 졸업하고 독일 대학원에 진학하고 싶다든지, 독일에서 스페인으로 가고 싶다든지 할 경우, 기존에는 서로 교육시스템이 달라서 평가가 어려웠는데, 그걸 서로 맞춘거죠. 그 과정에서 한 과목은 일주일에 몇 시간을 수업하고 한 수업은 어떤 시험과 어떤 발표로 이뤄진다는 것을 대강 합의한 것입니다. 그 과정에서 세미나에서의 발표도 도입된거구요. 그 전 독일의 세미나는 말 그대로 텍스트를 읽고 교수의 사회 하에 서로 토론만 하는 것이었죠. 물론 매주 발표를 하는 세미나도 기본적으로 읽어올 텍스트는 당연히 존재합니다만, 발표를 하면 아무래도 토론도 그렇고 발표에 맞춰 진행될 수밖에 없겠죠. 근데 이 선생님은 그런거 쌩깠습니다. "볼로냐 협약 이후 발표 어쩌구 도입되었는데 내 경험상 그런거 도움 안 된다. 우린 그냥 매주 텍스트 읽고 그걸로 토론하자. 대신 조건이 있다. 다들 텍스트를 철저하게 읽어와라. 알았지?" 이런 식이었습니다. 다른 세미나들에 대해서도 길게 설명하면 지루하실 수 있을테니, 대강만 기억을 더듬어 이야기 해보겠습니다. "1차 세계대전 당시의 독일과 러시아 제국"이라는 수업은 은퇴하기 직전의 노교수가 맡으셨는데, 이 교수님은 러시아사에 대해서는 독일에서 손꼽히는 전문가셨습니다. "러시아사"라는 1000쪽이 넘는 분량의 책을 쓰셨고, "소련사"라는 책도 역시 1000쪽이 넘었죠 -.- 그리고 쓰신 글을 읽어보면, 문체가 딱 19세기 독일 학자들의 글입니다. 문장이 길고, 세련됐고, 우아합니다. 근데, 말씀을 하실 때도 그렇게 하십니다. 첫학기 당시의 저로서는 알아 듣기 어려웠습니다 ㅡㅡ 그리고 독일의 세미나들에서는 보통 한 주에 논문 한두개나 책의 쳅터 한두개를 깊이 있게 읽어와서 그거에 대해서 집중적으로 토론을 합니다. 많은 분량을 읽어오는 영국의 시스템과 좀 다르죠. 근데 이 노교수는 매주 200쪽이 넘는 분량을 읽어오라고 하십니다. 물론 읽는 것 자체야 할 수 있지만, 그 내용을 다 소화해서 즉석에서 토의를 하는데 써먹을 수 있도록 하는 것은 다른 이야기였습니다. 게다가 과목 이름에 맞게 복잡한 외교적인 내용들이 많아서 몇십장 읽고나면 전에 내용은 제대로 기억이 안나기 일쑤였습니다;; 이 수업은 매주 학생들이 돌아가면서 발표를 했습니다. 그런데 일반적인 발표는 아니었고, 읽어올 텍스트를 5장 정도로 요약해서 학교 포털에 올린 후 그걸 바탕으로 발표를 짧게 하고 교수가 평가해주는 식이었습니다. 사실 교수는 지난 학기까지는 이걸 매주 모든 학생들이 하는 식으로 수업을 운영했다는군요. 이번 학기는 자기가 은퇴하는 학기라 여러 사정이 겹쳐서 전부 고쳐줄 수가 없어서 한 주에 한 학생만 하는 거라고 했습니다. 어쨌든 이 방식은 저 같이 즉흥적인 토론에 약한 외국인에겐 괜찮았습니다. 제 발표는 12월 중순이었습니다. 지구사와 바이마르 공화국 연구에 관한 두 세미나는 딱 전형적인 독일인 교수님들의 세미나였습니다 (결과적으로 이 두분이 제 석사논문 지도교수님이 되어 주셨고, 한분은 제 박사논문 지도를 맡게 되셨습니다). 매주 특정한 주제에 대해서 논문을 읽고, 연관된 주제에 대해서 학생들이 발표를 하면 그거에 대해서 토론을 하는 식이었죠. 그리고 발표를 하지 않는 학생들은 수업 전날까지 해당 논문에 대한 요약과 비판을 1장 내외로 짧게 써서 교수와 발표 담당자의 메일로 보내야 했습니다. 제가 한국에서 느낀 발표 수업과 달랐던 점만 이야기하자면, 여기는 발표와 토론 시간이 엄격하게 분리되지 않았습니다. 발표를 하는 와중에도 학생들이 궁금한게 생기면 손을 들고 질문을 하는 식이었죠. 어떻게 보면 학생들이 발표를 한다기보다는 하나의 의제를 이끌어 나간다고 보는게 더 맞을 수도 있겠습니다. 문제는, 이런 방식이 저 같이 독일어를 자연스럽게 구사하지 못하는 외국인에게는 굉장히 어렵다는 것이었습니다. 첫 주에 방식을 듣자마자, "아, 이건 당장은 못하겠다" 싶어서 최대한 학기 뒤로 미뤘습니다. 마지막 학기 전 주인 1월 말에 두 과목 모두 발표를 하게 되었습니다. 대형강의는 지난 편에서 말씀드렸다시피 교수가 앞에서 수업한 내용을 듣고 학기 말에 구두시험을 봐야 했는데요. 구두시험이라는 것을 겪어보지 않았기에 수업을 듣는 내내 막막하더군요. 여기서 저와 독일 학생들의 다른 점을 느꼈는데, 저는 어쨌든 수업을 들으면서 시험 생각을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없더군요. 그에 반해 독일 학생들은 겉으로 보기에는 여유로워 보였고, 재미없어 보이는 주제를 다룰때는 아예 수업에 안 오기도 했습니다 (독일 대형강의에서는 출석체크를 따로 하지 않습니다). 근데 교수들도 애들이 얼마나 출석하는지 마음 속으로는 나름 신경 쓰는 것 같아요. 2학기 후에 다른 과목 시험을 보러 교수연구실에 들어갔는데, 저를 보더니 „Herr ooo은 매주 한번도 빠짐 없이 앞쪽에 앉더군요. 항상 와서 눈에 띄었습니다“라고 말한 적이 있었어요. 어쨌거나 첫 학기에는 결과적으로 두 과목 모두 학기 끝까지 매주 참석은 했지만, 시험은 포기했습니다. 아직 시험에 임해서 자유롭게 말하기에는 저의 실력이 부족하다고 느꼈고, 다음 학기에 시험을 보는 게 낫다고 판단했기 때문입니다. 이제 시간을 좀 건너뛰어 처음 발표날로 가겠습니다. 12월 중순에 있었던 노교수 수업에서의 발표였는데요. 이 발표는 내용을 요약해서 소개하는 것이었기에 준비하면서 그나마 막막하지는 않았습니다. 단, 요약한 지문을 포탈에 올려야 하기 때문에, 글을 잘 쓰기 위해 애를 썼습니다. 특히 문법을 안 틀리기 위해서 스스로 쓴거를 읽고 또 읽었습니다. 수업 전날 오전에 일찌감치 글을 올리고 다음날 교수가 고쳐준거를 받았습니다. 몇군데 표현이나 어휘를 자연스럽게 고쳐줬습니다. 고쳐준 종이를 건네 주면서 „eine große Leistung für einen Ausländer!“라고 하더군요. „외국인치고는 매우 잘했다“는 말이었습니다. 이 말은, 결과적으로 지금까지도 한편으로는 저를 기쁘게, 다른 한편으로는 저를 답답하게 만드는 말입니다. "내가 아무리 잘해도 결국은 ‚외국인 치고‘ 잘한다는 표현이구나“ 싶어서 말이죠. 일상에서 독일인들이 저한테 독일어를 잘한다고 칭찬해줄 때도 이런 생각을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없더군요. 지금의 지도교수님 밑에서 지도를 받고 싶다고 처음 생각하게 된 것도 저를 외국인으로 대하지 않고 그냥 한 명의 학생으로 인식해주셨기 떄문입니다. 다른 두 세미나의 발표는 좀더 준비 과정이 험난했습니다. 지구사 세미나의 발표 주제는 „1960년대 프랑스 신좌파의 제 3세계 담론“이었습니다. 기본적인 텍스트는 있었습니다만 (얼마 전에 독일에서 누군가가 이 주제로 박사논문을 썼습니다) 발표를 하기 위해선 더 많은 자료를 모아야 했습니다. 다행히 이 발표는 다른 학생 한명과 둘이서 같이 맡게 되었는데, 착한 학생이어서 처음 긴 발표를 맡게된 저에게 도움을 많이 줬습니다. 너 충분히 잘하니까 격려도 많이 해줬고요. 발표 내에서 비판적 내용에 관해선 저한테 일임해주기도 했고, 고마운 친구였습니다. 그렇게 발표날이 되었는데, 제가 발표하기로 한 부분을 발표하고 나서 중간 이후부터 학생들이 질문을 할 때, 제 스스로가 대처가 전혀 안되더군요. 그다지 공격적인 질문들은 아니었지만, 여기 학생들 특유의 자유로운 질문들이 많아서, 소위 말하는 멘붕에 빠졌습니다. 같이 발표한 친구가 대답을 대신 많이 해줘서 그 순간에는 고마웠지만, 끝나고 나서 마음이 정말 안 좋았습니다. 아직은 직업으로서 독일에서 학자가 되기에는 턱없이 부족하다는 생각을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없었어요. 갈길이 정말 멀다는 생각 뿐이었습니다. 마지막 발표는 바이마르 공화국에 관한거였는데, 바이마르 공화국 당시 독일 역사학계 내에서의 Ostforschung, 우리 말로 하면 동유럽연구라고 할수 있습니다. 이 주제는 바이마르 공화국 다음의 제3제국과 관련된 주제였기 때문에 중요한 주제이기도 했고, 제 관심사와도 맞닿아 있었기에 준비도 더 열심히 했습니다. 전 발표에서 깨달은 바가 있었기에 발표할 스크립트도 거의 외우다시피 했습니다. 그리고 이번 발표는 혼자 하는 것이기에, 정말 뒤가 없다는 생각으로 열심히 했습니다. 한 동안 매일 악몽을 꾸고 두통에 시달릴 정도로 스트레스를 많이 받은 것도 사실이긴 합니다 -.- 그리고 여기 분위기가 피피티를 화려하게 만드는 분위기는 아니어서 피피티는 최대한 간단하게 만들었어요. 결과적으로 이 발표는 무사히, 잘 마치게 되었습니다. 교수님도 칭찬을 해주셨고, 같이 들으면서 친하게 된 학생도 끝나고 나서 „준비하기 어려웠다며 잘 했네!“라면서 가더군요. 어쨌든 이렇게 제 첫 번째 학기는 끝이 났고, 이제는 페이퍼를 써야할 때가 다가왔습니다. 20장 분량의 페이퍼 4개를 2달 동안에 써야했는데, 학기 중에 대강의 내용은 틈틈히 준비했지만 과연 잘 할 수 있을지 걱정이 많았습니다.
