안녕하세요. 많은 분들이 1편을 재밌게 읽어주셔서, 힘을내서 얼른 더 쓰게 됐습니다 :) 지난 번엔 학부에서 세미나 한 과목을 이수해야 한다는 조건 하에 합격통보를 받았다는 부분까지 썼었죠. 그게 사실 출국 비행기표를 미리 끊어 놓은 지 열흘 정도 전이었습니다. 그렇습니다. 일이 늦어지는 바람에 까딱하면 합격통보도 못 받고 출국부터 할뻔했었던 거죠. 합격통보를 받고는 우선 부랴부랴 집을 구할 때까지 머물 숙소를 2주 정도 예약했습니다. 사실 독일에 지인이 있는 경우 잠시 신세를 지면서 집을 구하는게 일반적인데, 저 같은 경우는 독일에 연고가 전혀 없다보니 쌩으로 돈을 주고 숙소를 예약하는 수밖에 없었습니다. 지금 생각해보면 참 신기한 일이에요. 저는 제가 중요하다고 생각하는 일에는 스스로 피를 말릴만큼 철저하게 계획하거든요. 예를 들어 공부에 관해서라면, 몇 학기에 걸쳐서 몇 학점을 어떤 식으로 나눠서 듣고, 해당 학점의 과목들이 언제 열리는지를 계속 확인하고, 확인한 이후에도 혹시 잘못 계산하지는 않았을까 스스로 쓸데없이 불안해하는 성격이에요. 물론 반대로 중요하지 않다고 생각하는 경우에는 남들이 놀랄만큼 손을 아예 놔버리는 경향도 있습니다. 어쨌든 집을 구하는 것은 누가봐도 전자에 해당하는데, 독일에서 아무 연고 없이 2주 안에 집을 구하는건 굉장히 힘든 일이거든요. 우선 부동산 계약 자체가 한국과는 다르게 진행됩니다. 집주인이 부동산을 통해서 방을 내놓으면, 부동산에서 (요즘에는 주로 인터넷을 통해서) 공지를 합니다. 그러면 저 같이 방에 관심이 있는 사람이 부동산에 메일을 보내거나 전화를 합니다. 그럼 부동산에서 언제 자기네한테 오라고 연락을 줘요. 방을 둘러보고 마음에 들면 부동산 측에 구매의사를 나타냅니다. 서류를 작성하는데, 현재 직업과 수입을 쓰고, 전에 살던 집주인으로부터 방세를 밀리지 않고 꼬박꼬박 냈다는 서명도 받을 수 있으면 첨부합니다. 저 같은 경우는 학생이고 직업적인 측면에서도 그렇고, 전에 독일에서 살았던 적도 없으니 전집주인의 서명따위 받을 수가 없었죠 -.- 그리고 이런 서류를 작성하면 바로 계약을 하는게 아니라, 보통 몇주정도 그렇게 잠재적인 고객들한테 방을 보여주고, 구매의사가 있는 고객들의 명단을 부동산이 주인에게 보여줍니다. 그렇습니다. 저 같이 독일에서 처음 살게된 '외국인 학생'은 매우 불리합니다. 입장바꿔서 제가 집주인이어도 잘 모르는 외국에서 온, 얼굴 한 번 본적 없고 이름조차 낯설게 느껴지는 학생이 있으면 망설여질 것 같습니다. 어쨌든 두바이를 경유해서 프랑크푸르트에서 내립니다. 그동안 배운 독일어를 입국심사대에서 처음으로 현지에서 써봅니다. "왜 독일에 오셨죠?" 훗, 이미 예상한 질문입니다. "대학에 입학하려고 왔습니다"라고 말한 후 대학 합격통지서를 보여줍니다. 대학이 있는 도시도 그렇고, 사학과라는 전공도 그렇고, 딴짓거리할 껀덕지가 없습니다. 바로 통과됩니다. 힘든 과목 공부하는데 열심히 하라는 덕담과 함께 ㅋㅋ 기차를 타고 제가 살게된 도시로 이동을 합니다. 예약한 숙소에 도착하니 밤이었습니다. 아직도 기억납니다. 그 낯선 풍경. 막막함. 막막함 속에서 느껴지는 미래에 대한 한줄기의 설렘. '이제 드디어 시작이구나'하는 감정. 그치만 우선은 짐을 풀고 잠에 들었습니다. 다음날 아침 부동산으로 향합니다. 이미 인터넷을 통해 방 하나를 봐뒀습니다. 가는 길에 시내에 있는 동네 빵집에서 크로아상을 사먹는데, 주인 아주머니가 너무나 친절합니다. 공항이나 숙소에서 만난 직원 제외하고는 제가 처음으로 이야기해본 현지인 아닐까 싶은데, 외국에 살게된 낯선 감정때문인지 그 친절함이 더 감동으로 다가왔어요. 지금은 집 위치가 그 빵집에서 좀 멀어서 자주 가지는 못하지만, 학교 가는 길에 그 빵집을 지나가게 되면 아직도 유리 건너로 아주머니가 보이면서 그 때 기억이 납니다. 어쨌든 빵을 먹고 부동산에 들러서 열쇠를 받고 방을 보러 갑니다. 여기서 '지붕층'이라고 말하는, 건물 가장 윗층에 있는 방입니다. 독일 건물 모양에 따라 지붕이 뾰족하게 되어 있습니다. 이 지붕층에 대해서는 여러가지 장단점을 건너건너 들었지만, 물불 가릴때가 아니기 때문에 서류를 작성합니다. 그 후에 학교로 갑니다. 기숙사를 알아보기 위해서였어요. 안타깝게도 기숙사는 지금 신청해도 몇달 기달려야한다고 합니다. 대신 집을 알아 볼 수 있는 현지 인터넷 사이트들이 적힌 종이를 줍니다. 이런 사이트들은 주로 주인이 복비를 내는 것을 피하기 위해 직접 매물을 내놓는 사이트입니다. 독일은 복비를 주인이 내는 것이었습니다! 알겠다고 하고 돌아온 다음에 가져온 노트북으로 확인을 하고 시내 중앙 좋은 위치에 있는 집에 연락합니다. 다음날 오후 한시에 와보랍니다. 다음날 시간에 맞춰서 갑니다. 독일 사람들은 시간을 정확히 지킨다는 말을 하도 많이 들어서 절대 늦지 않겠다고 결심합니다. 아 참, 독일인들의 시간 개념에 대한 이 평판에 관해서는 앞으로 무수히 많은 반례를 체험하게 됩니다 :( 아무튼 한시에 집 앞에 도착합니다. 위치는 시내 한복판에 있어서 정말 좋습니다. 대학까지도 걸어서 15분 정도 걸리고요. 도착하니까 왠 중동에서 온듯한 아저씨가 집 대문 앞에서 공사를 하고 계십니다. "Herr oo(oo씨)를 만나러 왔는데요"라고 하니, "내가 oo이다"라는 대답이 옵니다. 이 분이..? 싶은 복장과 인상입니다. 쿨하게 집안으로 안내를 해줍니다. 한번 둘러봤습니다. 크기 대비 가격도 그렇고, 위치도 그렇고, 창문이 흔히 말하는 북향이라는 점은 걸리지만 제가 생각해도 그런걸 가릴 때는 아닙니다. "마음에 드는대요. 가능하다면 계약하고 싶습니다". "그럼 저녁에 계약 하러 와". ????? 독일에서는 이런 식으로 계약을 맺는 것이 절대 일반적이지 않다고 들었습니다. 위에서 설명드린 방식이 일반적이거든요. 바로 계약을 하면 좋긴 좋은데, 뭔가 망설여집니다. 집을 구하다가 사기를 당하는 경우도 많이 들어서, 혹시 이게 사기는 아닐까 불안해지기도 합니다. 당신이 집주인이냐고 물어보니까, 집주인은 자기 형인데 형은 스트라스부르에서 의사로 일하고 있어서 자기가 대리인이랍니다. 게다가 구사하는 독일어에서 아랍어의 악센트가 강하게 느껴집니다. 이 일 이후 많이, 아주 많이 반성하게 되었습니다. 저의 불안감과 의심에는, 이 사람이 독일인, 아니 정확하게 말하면 백인이 아닌 중동출신(나중에 대화를 통해서 시리아인이었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다)이라는 점이 의식, 무의식적으로 큰 역할을 했어요. 계약을 하는 순간까지, 아니 그 이후에도 한동안 혹시 집주인은 따로 있고 난 사기를 당한게 아닐까 싶은 불안함이 문득문득 밀려왔습니다. 지금 생각해보면, 이 사람이야말로 불안했어야 했는데 말이죠. 동양에서 온, 아직 거주지도 안 정해져서 계좌조차 만들지 못해서, 집값을 보내지도 못하는 외국인 학생이 자기 집에 살고 싶다는데 말이에요. 그 이후에도 이 분은 불편한 점이나 어려운 점이 있으면 항상 적극적으로 해결해주신, 아주 좋은 분이셨습니다. 이런 일반화는 매우 위험하지만, 뭔가 기질이 한국사람들과 비슷합니다. 문제가 있으면 빨리빨리 해결한다는 점에서요. 나중에 스트라스부르에서 의사로 일한다는 진짜 집주인도 만났는데, 옷 입는 것도 그렇고 대화하는 것도 그렇고, 지적인 분위기가 물씬 풍겨서 놀랐습니다. 형제 간에도 사람에게서 느껴지는 느낌이 전혀 다르다는 점이 신기했습니다. 집을 구한 이후 초기 정착에 관한 부분은 별 어려움 없이 풀렸습니다. 현지에서 계좌를 만들고, 거주자등록을 하고, 의료보험에 가입하고, 학교에 정식으로 입학을 하고, 비자를 신청하고 등등의 과정이요. 물론 지나고나서 이렇게 설명하니 별거 아닌 것처럼 스스로 말하는데, 당시에는 과정 하나하나에 뭐가 잘못되지는 않을지 불안해했습니다. 위에서 말했다시피 제 성격이 좀 그렇거든요. 저도 고치고 싶은데 이 부분은 아직까지도 잘 안되네요. 이런 일련의 과정을 마치고 나서, 9월말 쯤이었던걸로 기억하는데, 수강신청할 때가 다가옵니다. 이 부분은 독일 안에서도 학교마다, 그리고 과마다 다르다고 알고 있는데, 제 경우에는 수강신청이 한국에서의 그것과는 아주 달랐습니다. 한국에서는 몇일 몇시에 수강신청 시작이라고 하면 그때를 기다렸다가 클릭전쟁이 벌어지잖아요. 여긴 그런게 없었습니다 (말씀드렸다시피, 학교나 과마다 다를 수 있습니다. 공대나 사회과학 같이 학과 내 인원이 많은 경우에는 기초과목을 들을때 다소간 경쟁이 있다고도 들었습니다. 저희 학교 같은 경우는 이럴 떄 선착순이 아니라 추첨으로 해결하더군요). 아 참, 수강신청에 대해서 설명드리려면 우선 독일의 수업 시스템에 대해서 말씀 드려야 할 것 같아요. 독일의 수업은 크게 두 가지 유형으로 들립니다. Vorlesung(포어레숭)과 Seminar입니다. 전자는 간단합니다. Vor는 '앞'이라는 뜻이고 'lesung'은 읽는다는 뜻입니다. 말그대로 교수가 앞에서 쭉 수업을 하는, 우리나라의 흔한 대형강의라고 생각하시면 됩니다. 과목들도 주로 입문이나 넓은 범위를 다룹니다. 예를 들어 제가 첫학기에 들었던 포어레숭 중 하나는 Kulturgeschichte in der Frühen Neuzeit였는데, "초기근대의 문화사"라는 뜻입니다. 이런 포어레숭에서는 일반적으로 토론이나 질문이 이뤄지지 않습니다. 수업이 끝나고 따로 교수를 찾아가지 않는 이상이요. 제가 대형강의라고 생각하시면 된다고 했는데, 참가인원도 많습니다. 과목에 따라 다르지만, 100명에 이르는 경우도 많습니다. 그리고 여기 와서 놀란 부분이 있는데, 학생이 아닌 할머니 할아버지분들이 포어레숭에 아주 많이 적극적으로 참여하십니다! 여기는 학생이 아니라고 수업을 못듣게 한다거나 하지 않거든요. 아마 제가 들었던 수업들이 역사쪽이라 더 시민들의 관심이 많았던 것 같은데, 1/3 정도는 할머니나 할아버지들이었던 것 같아요. 저는 개인적으로 이 부분이 지금까지의 유학생활 중 무척이나 감명 깊었습니다. 대학이라는 기관에 대해서 많은 생각을 하게 해줬죠. 이 부분은 기회가 된다면 아예 따로 다뤄야 할 것 같아서 우선은 넘어가겠습니다. 포어레숭이 대형강의에 가깝다면, 세미나는 말그대로 세미나입니다. 소수의 인원이 매주 교수가 정해주는 텍스트를 읽고와서 토론을 합니다. 정확한 인원은 그때그때 과목마다 다릅니다. 제가 들었던 세미나 중 학생이 많았던 경우에는 20명이 조금 넘은 경우도 있었고, 제일 적었던 세미나는 무려 저 포함 2명...이었던 경우도 있습니다 (텍스트를 대충 읽을래야 대충 읽을 수가 없습니다. 결석할 수도 없습니다 ㅋㅋ). 세미나는 포어레숭과 달리 보통 하나의 주제를 집중적으로 깊이 있게 다룹니다. 예를 들어서 제가 첫학기에 들었던 세미나 중 하나는 Probleme zur Forschung der Weimarer Republik, 즉 "바이마르 공화국 연구에 있어서의 여러 문제들"입니다. 단순히 졸업을 하는 것이 아니라, 대학에 계속 남아서 연구를 하려면 당연히 세미나에서 교수에게 좋은 인상을 남겨야겠죠? 그리고 저 개인적으로는 이 세미나 시스템을 통해서 수없이 좌절하고, 무너지고, 또 나름대로는 조그마한 성장이라도 한 것 같아요. 매주 같은 텍스트를 읽은 다른 학생들의 질문이나 비판을 듣고, 한편으로는 "얘네는 역시 학문적인 대화를 잘하는 군"이라고 생각하고, 다른 한편으로는 "나도 비슷한 생각을 했는데, 같은 생각을 했어도 생각이 표현되는 독일어의 수준이 다르다"라고 느끼게 되니 어쩔 때는 한 없이 우울해지더군요. 다시 수강신청으로 돌아와서, 독일은 학점체계가 한국과 많이 다릅니다. 학부는 총 180학점을 들어야하고, 석사는 120학점을 들어야 하는데, 졸업논문이 30학점이니 수업을 통해서 채워야 하는 학점은 각각 150, 90 학점 입니다. 이 학점은 각각의 '모둘'이라고 하는 것으로 나뉩니다. 예를 들어서 석사 90학점 중 근대사 모둘이 16 학점, 초기 근대사 모둘이 16학점, 이론사가 15학점, 식민지사 16학점 이런식입니다. 각 모둘은 다시 포어레숭과 세미나를 통해서 취득해야하는 학점으로 나뉩니다. 다시 예를 들어보겠습니다. 근대사 16학점 중 포어레숭을 듣고 치르는 시험에서 4학점, 세미나에 참여해서 치르는 시험을 통해서 12학점을 취득하는 식입니다. 왜 포어레숭과 세미나에서 얻는 학점이 다르냐구요? 포어레숭의 경우 학점 취득을 위해 모든 수업을 듣고 학기 마지막 주에 구두시험을 봅니다. 그렇습니다. 독일애들이야 구두시험을 오히려 비교적 편하게 느끼는 경우도 있지만, 저 같은 외국인학생의 경우에는 이 구두시험이야말로 넘어야하는 벽입니다. 첫 학기는 이 구두시험 때문에 내내 스트레스를 받아야 했습니다. 반면에 세미나를 듣고나서는 Hausarbeit (하우스아르바이트)를 제출해야합니다. 이건 흔히 말하는 페이퍼라고 생각하시면 될 것 같아요. 한 학기 동안 세미나를 듣고, 교수와 면담을 통해서 쓰고 싶은 주제에 대해서 20장 내외의 소논문을 씁니다. 하우스아르바이트의 경우에는 일반적으로 학기 말에 내는 것이 아니라, 방학이 끝나고 다음 학기가 시작하기 적전까지 제출합니다. 눈치채신 분들이 계시겠지만, 방학이 방학이 아니게 됩니다. 어쨌든 모둘을 이리저리 조합해보면서 첫학기에 들을 수업들의 목록을 짜봤습니다. 포어레숭으로는 아까말한 초기 근대의 문화사와 더불어 Transkontinentale Europäische Geschichte in der Moderne (근대의 간대륙적 유럽사 ㅡㅡ)를 들었고, 세미나는 아까 언급한 바이마르 공화국에 관한 것과 Globalgeschichte (지구사), Das Zarenreich und Deutschland im Ersten Weltkrieg (1차 세계대전 당시의 러시아제국과 독일)을 수강신청했습니다. 여기에 입학 조건으로 붙었던 세미나, Das Reich in der Frühen Neuzeit (초기 근대의 신성로마제국)이 덧붙여졌습니다. 나중에 직접적으로 체험하고, 또 독일 친구들에게서 듣게 되지만, 한 학기에 세미나 4개를 듣는 것은... 휴... 해서는 안될 짓이었습니다. 뭣모르는 외국인이 너무나 패기가 넘치는 짓을 했던 것이었습니다. 그리고 그렇게 10월 26일, 개강날짜는 다가오게 됩니다...
