性 아니고 姓 이야기예요. 노리고 쓴 것 맞습니다. ㅎㅎㅎ 다른 커뮤에도 쓴 적이 있는데 제 이름 바꾸는 기념으로 보충해서 써 볼게요. 김 영희와 존 옌센이 결혼해서 영희 스미스와 존 스미스가 된 이야기입니다. 어떻게 된 일일까요? 덴마크 사람들은 보통 미들네임을 다 가지고 있어요. 저는 책이나 영화를 통해서만 접해본 영미 문화에도 미들네임이 있더라구요? 가까운 가족의 이름을 많이 따는 거 같던데요... (미들네임도 퍼스트 네임처럼 보이는 걸로 봐서) 덴마크에선 조금 다릅니다. 보통은 부모 성을 하나씩 따요. 영희 박 김, 이러면 영희네 엄마가 박씨고 아빠가 김씨겠거니 하고 추측하면 대강 맞죠. 철수 이 최, 아마 철수네 엄빠가 각각 이씨랑 최씨인가 보네요. 영희 (女) 랑 철수 (男) 가 결혼을 하면 이들의 이름은 어떻게 될까요? 두 사람의 자녀 준희는요? 흔한 경우는 이런 겁니다. 철수는 이름 그대로 가지고 가고요, 영희는 기존 성을 미들네임으로 삼은 뒤 남편 성을 새 성으로 삼습니다. 준희 또한 부모에게서 하나씩 받은 김과 최를 각각 미들네임과 성으로 쓸 가능성이 높습니다. 영희 ---------> 준희 김 최. 이해 되시죠? 준희는 엄마 (외할아버지)와 아빠 (친할아버지) 의 성을 하나씩 받았네요. 요즘에는 영희도 결혼하고 이름 안 바꾸는 경우도 많긴 해요. 준희는 아빠 (친할아버지) 성을 따르면서 외할아버지나 외할머니의 성 중 하나를 미들네임으로 받을 수도 있구요. 하지만 당연히 다양한 예외들이 있답니다. 1. 선택의 순간: 엄마가 좋아, 아빠가 좋아? 영희는 엄마 성인 박씨와 아빠 성인 김씨 중 하나만을 남겨야 하는 상황에서 (둘 다 가져가도 되긴 하는데 이름이 너무 길어지잖아요) 누구를 선택할 것인가는 순전히 자기 맘입니다. 위에선 기존 성이었던 아빠 성을 남겼지만 사실 엄마 성을 남겨도 상관 없습니다. 그럴 경우 결혼 후 새 이름이 영희 박 최가 됩니다. 엄마 성이 더 예쁘거나 아빠랑 사이가 나빴거나 이유는 다양하겠죠. 꽤 흔합니다. 2. 같이 바꾸는 경우: 부부는 일심동체 철수도 이름을 바꾸고 싶으면 바꿔도 됩니다. 예를 들어 영희가 본인 쪽 성 하나를 가져 오잖아요, 박이든 김이든. 그리고 철수 쪽 성을 하나 취하기로 했을 때 철수도 영희네 성 하나를 가져오는 거죠. 영희가 박 버리고 김 가져오고, 철수는 이 버리고 최 가져와서 둘이 미들네임과 성을 맞추는 겁니다. 김 최 이렇게요. 영희는 아버지와 시아버지 성을, 철수는 장인어른과 아버지 성을 각각 사용하면서 부부의 가족 이름이 생겼죠. 이 역시 종종 볼 수 있는 조합이에요. 영희와 철수가 각각 부계 대신 모계 성을 선택해서 새로운 가족 이름을 만들 수도 물론 있습니다. 이 조합은 자녀들도 그대로 물려받겠죠. 새로운 선택의 순간이 올 때까지...ㅋㅋ 3. 모던패밀리 이 글을 처음 쓰는 계기가 됐던 케이스입니다. 가족들 성이 다 달라요. 영희와 철수는 결혼 후에도 이름을 바꾸지 않았거든요. 재미있는 건 자녀가 태어난 후입니다. 영희는 자기 (아버지) 성인 김을 미들네임으로 주기로 했어요. 그러나 철수는 부모님 이혼 후 자기와 교류가 없다시피 했던 본인의 아버지 성 최 대신 자기를 키워준 엄마 성인 이 를 주기로 합니다. 본인 이름은 편의상 바꾸지 않았지만 그 성을 자식한테까지 물려줄 필요는 없다는 논리였죠. 그래서 준희 김 이 가 되었습니다. 엄마 아빠 아이가 각각 김씨 최씨 이씨인 가족이라는. 이건 곁가지 얘긴데 준희 입장에서 이씨는 아버지의 어머니의 어머니의 아버지 성이예요. 왜냐면 준희네 친할머니가 1번의 경우에서 자기 어머니 성을 남겼거든요. 복잡한데 결론은 희안한 경로로 아버지의 모계 성을 받은 것입니다. ** 김 영희와 존 옌센이 영희 스미스와 존 스미스가 된 까닭은 그러합니다. 저희 커플의 경우에는 가족 이름을 만들면서, 저는 제 아버지 성을 선택해 (원래 이름에 엄마 성이 없기도 했고요) 미들네임으로, 남편은 자기 어머니 (의 처녀적) 성을 선택해 성으로 만든 것이에요. 김 스미스 가족입니다. 제 성이 성이 될 수도 있었지만 여전히 성은 남편 쪽을 따라가는 게 보편 정서네요. 남편 나라에 살고 있는 만큼 현지 성을 갖고 있다는 편의도 무시할 수 없구요. 그렇지만 일단 김을 남겨는 놨으니, 저도 제 자식 손주 대에 내려가서 역전을 할 수도 있겠죠! 남편에게는 여자 형제가 있는데 역시 결혼할 때 시어머니 성을 미들네임으로 남기고 남편 성을 취했어요. 동시에 남편도 미들네임을 장모님 이름으로 바꿨고요. 1번과 2번의 조합이라 보시면 되겠습니다. 저희 시아버지 성은 이렇게 자식들 대에서 사라지게 되었네요... 이유인즉 저희 시어머니 성이 protected name 으로 희소성이 있어서입니다. 미들네임까지 생각하면 저희 시어머니의 처녀적 성은 아들딸과 손주들은 물론이고 사위와 며느리까지 물려받게 되었다는 것이죠. 좋은 이름 갖고 볼 일입니다(?) 이름 바꿀 일이 사실상 거의 없는 우리나라에선 전혀 해 볼 일이 없는 종류의 선택이라 한 번 소개해 봅니다. 영미권에서는 양가쪽 이름을 다 사용하고 싶을때 보통 부인성-남편성 이런식으로 합해서 긴 성을 만드는게 더 흔한것 같아요. 이름이 이-최 철수 이런식으로 바뀌는거죠. 종종 여자가 자신의 메이든 네임 (결혼전 성)을 미들네임으로 사용하는 경우도있기는해요.
