그러다보니 큰 길 뒤편에 자연스럽게 길이 생겨났고 그 길로 다니는 아랫사람들의 왕례가 늘어나다보니 좁다란 골목길 양 옆으로 국밥집도 술집도 생겼다. 그리고 말을 피해 가는 곳이라는 의미에서 피맛골이라는 이름도 생겨났다. 태생부터 미천한 아랫사람들의 길이라 하찮게 보인것인지 너무 쉽게 개발이 결정되고 너무 쉽게 깡그리 밀려버렸다.  서울 종로에 피맛골이라는 식당골목이 있었다. 교보빌딩 뒤편에 작은 골목길을 사이에 두고 식당들이 자리잡고 있었다. 이 식당들은 도심 리모델링 계획에 따라 철거되고 이전되었다. 인근에 오랜된 맛집들도 주변의 신축 건물로 이전영업을 할 수 밖에 없었다. 피맛골 식당들은 반세기에 가깝게 영업해온 집들이 대부분이다. 이 식당들은 비좁은 골목길 안에서 매장을 수리하고 보수해 가면서 영업을 계속해왔다. 이렇게 수십년에 걸쳐 점증적으로 개선된 식당들은 자연스럽게 그 자체로 운치와 관록을 지니게 된다. 식당 여기저기에 쓰여진 낙서들, 오래된 포스터와 광고지가 붙어 있는 벽은 시간의 흐름을 고스란히 보여준다. 이렇게 반세기에 걸쳐 영업을 한 식당은 오래된 역사 그 자체가 하나의 문화가 된다. 더욱이 삼청동에 위치한 사랑방 형식의 한정식 집들과 다르게 피맛골은 일반서민들과 부대끼며 생겨난 보편적인 정취를 지니고 있었다. 어쩌면 한국적이란 이름에 걸맞는 것은 삼청동의 한정식집이 아니라 피맛골의 식당일지도 모르겠다.  피맛골이 사라지고 주변의 식당들도 철거되었다. 인근 신축빌딩으로 이전하여 장사를 계속하고 있지만 맛은 보존했을 망정 더이상 특유의 분위기를 선사 할 수는 없다. 반세기동안 피맛골을 상징했던 것은 오롯이 식당들이 선보이는 음식의 맛 뿐만은 아니었다. 음식의 맛과 함께 식당을 방문하던 사람들의 희노애락이 담겨진 골목길이야말로 피맛골의 온전한 상징이었다.  음식도 식당도 제대로된 상품으로서 인정받기 위해서는 스토리가 있어야 한다. 식당의 운치를 살려낼 수 없다면 그 식당이 가진 역사성 또한 상품으로서의 가치를 잃는다. 피맛골이 사라지면서 옛 건물이 가진 운치도 사라지고 골목길이 품고있던 이야기들도 흩어졌다. 오랜된 맛집의 의미를 되살리고자 노력한 흔적이 역력한 '청진옥'의 인테리어가 애잔해 보이는 것은 그런 이유때문일 것이다. 반듯한 간판과 깔끔해 보이는 내장재보다는 손때 묻은 식탁과 낡은 외관이 오래된 맛집의 정체성을 보여주는데는 더 적합해보인다. 피맛골의 오래된 식당들이 선보였던 맛의 반절쯤은 좁은 뒷골목에서 느껴졌던 운치와 시간이 쌓아준 관록이었다는 것을 생각해보면 피맛골의 개발이 다시 한번 아쉬워진다. -오피스텔 안 식당가를 드나들던 시인이 이런 시를 쓸 수 있었을까? 누군가 나에게 물었다 - 김종삼 누군가 나에게 물었다. 시가 뭐냐고 나는 시인이 못됨으로 잘 모른다고 대답하였다. 무교동과 종로와 명동과 남산과 서울역 앞을 걸었다. 저물녘 남대문 시장 안에서 빈대떡을 먹을 때 생각나고 있었다. 그런 사람들이 엄청난 고생 되어도 순하고 명랑하고 맘 좋고 인정이 있으므로 슬기롭게 사는 사람들이 그런 사람들이 이 세상에서 알파이고 고귀한 인류이고 영원한 광명이고 다름아닌 시인이라고. 이러고 술냄새 풀풀 풍기며 학교 다시 기어올라갔더니 어라 분명 어제 뒷풀이 1차 같이하다 집에 귀가하더니만 금방 또 등교해서는 시끌시원하게 깔깔대는 뽀얗고 풋풋한 동기 얼굴 마주치고
뭐 나도 이제 슬슬 한모 주점 역사의 한 글자 정도는 써 가고 있나보다 헤헤 하던 그 시절이 떠오르네요
