1. 용의 눈물 대한민국에서 방송된 사극중에 절대 빼놓을 수 없는 작품 블록버스터 사극의 시초이자 사극의 끝판왕이자 시청률까지 잘 나온 드라마 이 사극을 추천하는 가장 큰 이유는 가장 무난한 정통사극이라는 점이다. 가장 정석적이면서 보는 데 있어 가장 무난한 사극이다. 물론 2017년에 와서 저 평가가 맞느냐?하면 아니라고 말 할 수도 있겠지만 저 사극이 만들어진 해가 90년대 후반이란 걸 생각하면 납득 못할 이유는 아니지 않을까 싶다. 사실 지금 시점에 봐도 조사의의 난 부분까지는 충분히 재밌게 볼 수 있다. (그 뒤 시점은 양녕대군이 완벽하게 광팔이짓을 할떄즘부터 다시 재밌어진다.) 고증과 관련해서는 사실 글을 쓰고 있는 내 입장에서 옷이나 집 갑옷 무기같은 것들에 대해 상세히 알지 못하기떄문에 뭐라 말하기가 어렵다. 역사적 사실과 관련해서는 그 시절이 다 그렇듯이 (당시엔 조선왕조실록 번역이 다 안되어있던 시절이다.) 연려실기술과 야사의 내용이 많이 들어가있기때문에 실제 역사와 다소 다를 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이와 관련해서는 대단히 높은 평가를 줄 수 있는 건 이 시기가 쿠데타가 일어난 시기이기떄문에 왕자의 난과 관련된 인물중 태종과 적대적인 포지션을 취했던 인물들 예컨데 정도전과 같은 인물에 대한 평가가 실록에선 상당히 박한데 비해 이 드라마는 실록이나 야사만이 아니라 다른 기록들을 통해 정도전을 재평가시켰다는 점에 있으며 이성계와 이방원이 주인공임에도 불구하고 그들을 미화하거나 잔인한 면모를 숨기는 게 아니라 여과없이 드러내는 데 있다. 대표적으로 태종 이방원이 했던 골육상쟁이라던가 여자를 정말 심하게 밝힌다던가 (씸지어 아예 너무 여자관련된 내용이 많아 다 내보낼수가 없다고 나레이션이 나온다.) 이성계의 왕이 되고자 하는 심리묘사 등등.. 또한 명성황후 천추태후 근초고왕 광개토태왕으로 이어지는 우주를 넘어서는 대환국 드라마들을 보다보면 용의 눈물이 보여주는 역사적 고증은 정말 뛰어난 편에 속한다는 걸 알 수 있다. 물론 옥의 티도 존재한다. 그건 개망나니였던 양녕대군에 대한 밑도 끝도 없는 미화가 있겠다. (양녕대군이 세종에게 세자를 양보했다는 설은 이때로부터 백년은 더 뒤에나 민간에 퍼진거다. 그걸 왕실에서 주어담은거고) 아 굳이 더 단점을 적자면 조선이 개국될떄까지의 스펙타클한 면모와 달리 왕자의 난까지 가는 길에 조금 지루한 부분이 있으며 왕자의 난 이후 조사의의 난까지 또 스펙터클하게 가다가 그 이후 양녕대군이 본격적으로 망나니짓을 하기전까지 좀 지루한 면이 있다. (굳이 긍정적으로 생각한다면 조금 쉬어가는 타이밍이라 생각할 수도 있겠지만..) 2. 태조 왕건 어쩌면 이 사극은 위에도 잠깐 언급된 천추태후나 근초고왕 광개토태왕으로 이어지는 환국드라마의 시조격이라 할 수 있는 드라마 일 것이다. 정말 환국드라마라기보다는 그쪽과 어느정도 정서를 같이 한다는 의미에서.. 실제로 조선시대 드라마를 제외한 드라마중에 황제뽕을 맞고 시작한 드라마이기도 한데 (외왕내제가 아니라 대놓고 황제로 나온다) 이전은 어떨지 몰라도 이후는 확실하게 고려말 원간섭기 이전의 시대까지는 무조건 황제국으로 나오게 된다. (참고로 천추태후는 과거의 조선왕조500년 드라마의 고려판 고려왕조500년의 일환으로 본래 태조왕건 - 제국의 아침으로 이어진 뒤 다음타자로 들어갈 예정의 드라마였다가 무인시대로 바뀌고 생각보다 저조한 시청률과 이순신을 조명하기 위해 계획이 완전히 바뀌면서 나중에 괴상한 드라마로 다시 재등장한 것이다.) 어쩃든 그러한 불편할 수도 있는 부분을 제외하고 이 드라마를 본다면 재밌게 볼 수 있는 드라마로 괜히 시청률이 높았던 게 아니다. 우선 그떄가지 잘 다루지 않던 후삼국시기를 다룬 드라마였으며 그 시기가 우리나라의 전국시대라고 볼 수 있는 시대다보니 전투씬이 많이 등장하는 점 덕분에 시청자들의 흥미를 이끌 수 있었다. 또한 극초반부터 드라마를 이끈 궁예의 선풍적인 인기는 이 드라마가 정말로 왕건이 주인공이 맞긴한가?싶을 정도로 인상적이었다. 궁예가 나오는 동안 다소 가려졌지만 견훤이란 캐릭터 역시 대단히 매력적인 캐릭터로 등장하였다. 오죽하면 이 견훤을 연기한 서인석씨는 이후 어떤 사극을 출연하든 견훤이미지가 보이는 거때문에 엄청나게 고생을 해야했다. 그에 비해 왕건은 다소 심심한 캐릭터였는데 역사적으로도 왕건이 보여주는 행보때문이기도 하지만 (물론 고려시절 쓰인 기록이니 미화가 안될수가 없었겠지만) 이후 한국사극의 전통적인 고질병중 하나였던 주인공은 언제나 착하다가 여기서 좀 심하게 드러나기도 한다. 이는 궁예나 견훤이나 왕이 되고자 마음을 품은 그 순간부터 이미 대부분의 능력치가 만렙에 가깝긴 했지만 둘 모두 정치적인 면이나 성격적인 면에서 결함을 드러냈고 이 결함을 매꿔나가는 과정속에 되려 흑화하거나 (궁예) 날로 고집만 쎄져가는 (견훤) 모습을 보이는 데 이를 극중 장치를 통해 인간미를 내뿜게 하였고 그 자체가 매력적인 캐릭터로 보이게 하였지만 처음 등장부터 정치적인 면과 성격적인 면에서 완전무결을 장착해버린 왕건의 캐릭터는 그러한 매력을 느낄 여지가 거의 없었다고 봐야한다.(..) (물론 아예 없는 건 아니다. 대표적으로 신숭겸이 희생할때 울부짖는 장면이라던가..) 뭐 왕건의 캐릭터가 좀 재미없기는 했지만 그래도 나머지 인물들은 각자의 매력이 확실했기때문에 그걸로도 충분히 재밌게 볼 수 있었다. (ex 박술희, 유금필, 신검, 아자개 등등) 물론 그와 반대로 여러 단점들이 존재하기는 했지만 그걸 다 쓰기엔 분량이 너무 길어지니깐 생략하도록 한다. 좀 아쉬우니 그냥 간단히 적고 가자면 작가가 너무 삼국지를 좋아해서 삼국지에 나오는 장면을 많이 채용했고 인기가 높아짐에 따라 드라마가 연장이 된건지 중간에 질질 끄는 장면이 지나칠정도로 많아진다. 특히 궁예의 인기가 높아짐에 따라 본래 의도대로라면 일찍이 퇴장시키고 왕건체제로 가야했으나 그러지 못함으로써 왕건이란 캐릭터의 매력을 제때 보여주기도 전에 드라마의 절반을 소모하였고 그 결과는 왕건이 매력없는 캐릭터가 되었다는 데 있다. (순전히 최수종이 연기 잘한다라는 거밖에 알 수 없다..)
