최대한 스포일러가 될만한 내용은 피해서 작성하였습니다. 그러다 보니 처음 썼던 분량에서 2/3이 날아가네요; 2002년, 영국의 작가 세라 워터스가 발표한 장편소설 <핑거스미스>. 무려 <레즈비언과 게이 소설에 관한 연구>로 영문학 박사 학위를 땄다는 세라 워터스는 빅토리아 시대, 레즈비언 역사 소설로 3권의 소설을 발표했고 핑거스미스는 이 시리즈의 마지막 작품입니다. 제가 굉장히 좋아하는 책이기도 한데, 이 책을 언젠가 소개해보려고 마음먹은 이유는 바로 박찬욱 감독 때문입니다. 박찬욱 감독이 주연배우들의 출연을 확정지은 차기작 '아가씨'의 원작이기 때문이에요. 개인적으로 박찬욱 감독의 <스토커>를 굉장히 인상적으로 봤기 때문에 이 영화가 좀 더 기대되기도 해요. 빅토리아 시대의 레즈비언 소설이라는 것도 흥미로운데, 세라 워터스는 소설을 시작하자마자 낭만적인 소재들을 잔뜩 늘어놓습니다. 시골에 있는 성, 미술 선생을 빙자해서 귀족 아가씨를 꼬시려는 신사, 신사를 돕기 위해 하녀로 잠입한 좀도둑, 답답한 성 안에서 늘 단정하게 장갑을 끼고 돌아다니는 귀족 아가씨, 그리고 그들의 야밤의 도주.. 할리퀸 로맨스에서 쉽게 봤을 법한 설정이지만, 세라 워터스는 여기서 한발짝 더 나갑니다. 주인공이 바뀌는 2부부터는 우리가 상상하지 않았던 전혀 다른 이야기가 이어집니다. '신사'들이 런던 뒷골목과 시골의 성에서 즐겼던 은밀한 사생활에 대한 적나라한 성적인 묘사, 빅토리아 시대의 포르노들... 주인공인 10대 여성 소녀 둘은 전혀 다른 배경과 전혀 다른 성장배경을 가지고 자라지만, 당연하게도 멘탈 또한 완전히 정반대입니다. 사람들을 등쳐먹으면서 좀도둑으로 자랐지만 사람의 관계에서는 '무지'하다 시피 한 수, 그리고 성 안에 갇혀 예의바른 귀족 아가씨로 자랐지만 그야말로 '영악한' 모드. 두 소녀는 사춘기의 혼란스럽고 복잡한 성욕과 감정을 복잡한 사건들 사이에서 조심스럽게 풀어놓습니다. 사랑, 음모, 협잡, 배신 등 상상할 수 있는 모든게 등장하다 보니, 영국의 BBC에서는 당연하게도 이 책을 각색해서 드라마물로 내놓았습니다. 3부작, 180분의 짧은 미니시리즈였어요. 원작이 1, 2, 3부로 딱딱 나뉘어져 있으니 어찌 보면 괜찮은 각색이다 싶기도 한데, 사실 내용은 1부가 좀 깁니다. 그러다 보니 드라마도 양 조절이 안되서 결말까지 좀 헉헉거리며 달리는 감이 있지 않아서, 드라마는 별로 추천드릴 수가 없네요. 다만 뭐랄까, '여성들의 음란한 상상'에 대해서라면 책보다 드라마의 영상미가 좋았고, 그 영상미를 고스란히 떠올리게 만드는 세라 워터스의 문장력도 좋습니다. 박찬욱은 이 작품을 빅토리아 시대가 아닌 일제 강점기로, 일본인 귀족과 한국인 하녀로 옮겨서 그리는 모양이던데 캐스팅을 보니 아마 주인공들의 나이가 바뀔 것 같네요. 아마 서사적 이야기 구조에 집중하게 될 것 같은데, 개인적으로 핑거스미스의 진짜 매력은 그녀들이 '어린 사춘기 소녀들'이기에 있을법한 일이라고 생각해서 약간은 아쉽기도 합니다.
