특별히 뭔가 의미있는 글을 적고자 함은 아니라 문득 떠오른 장면에 글을 한번 남겨봅니다. 약 8~9 년 전쯤 약 1년 반정도의 기간동안 일본에서 살았던 경험이 있습니다. 뭐 이를테면 현재 직업을 위한 경험을 위해서 였습니다. 당시, 저는 친동생(형제 입니다.) 과 함께 일본에서 살았습니다. 동생은 니카센 이라고 불리우는 일본 과자전문학교에서 유학을 하며 뼈빠지게 일을 하는 외국인 노동자겸 학생이었고, 저도 뭐 크게 다르지 않지만, 전 동생의 약 4년정도의 유학기간중 약 1년 반정도를 신세를 지며, 함께 먹고 자며 일본인이 하는 카페에서 아르바이트를 하는 그런 외국인 노동자였습니다. 대개들 그렇겠지만, 여유가 넘치는 유학생활이 아닌 경제적으로 굉장히 빠듯하게 생활하던 시기였기에, 다들 기대하는 일본의 다양한 식문화를 경험하기는 쉽지 않았습니다. 유일하게 돈을 나름 쓰는 곳은 커피와 디저트 뿐이었죠. 그래서 항상 둘이 아르바이트 or 학교 생활이 비어있는 날이면, 밥은 꼭 집에서 해먹고, 그날의 목표 가게를 정해 디저트 투어를 하고 다시 집에와서 밥을 해먹는 그런 생활을 했습니다. 즉, 밥값은 최대한 아끼고 그 아낀 돈으로 디저트 투어를 하는 그런 삶이었던 것 같습니다. ^^; 가끔은 아쉬움도 있었지만, 나름 즐거웠던 추억쯤으로 기억됩니다. 제가 갑자기 이 이야기를 꺼낸건, 실은 요즘 종종 느끼는 장면 때문입니다. 저와 동생은 일본 생활 후, 약 6년 전쯤 한명은 커피 및 음료, 한명은 케이크를 비롯한 디저트 라는 파트를 담당하는 카페를 오픈하여 지금까지 쭉 해오고 있습니다. 그렇다보니 어쨌든 버티는게 장땡인지 어느덧 이 업계에서 조금은 이름이 알려지기도 하였습니다. 그래서 지금은 대부분 찾아오시는 손님들이 대부분인 그런 곳이랍니다. 그런데 최근들어! 예전에는 생각치도 못한 그런 장면들이 종종 발견됩니다. 저희가 물론 맛집들만 찾아서 투어하긴 했지만, 제가 일본에서 동생과 디저트 투어를 하면서 깜짝깜짝 놀랐던건. 8~9년 전 일본에선 생각보다 남자 손님 혼자 라던지, 남자들끼리 디저트를 먹으러 오는 사람들이 의외로 있었다는 거였습니다. 참, 당시에는 뭔가 문화적 충격까지 느꼈죠. 저희도 뭔가 덩치가 큰 곰같은 2마리의 남자가 함께 디저트 투어를 하기도 했지만, 저희는 어찌보면 미래의 업계 종사자였기 때문에 그렇다 하더라도, 일본에서는 회사원 차림의 직장인 남자가 혼자 가게에 와서 디저트를 매우 만족스럽게 즐기는걸 보던 기억이 참 당시에는 놀라웠거든요. 제가 로스팅을 하고 저희 커피 역시 인정도 받기도 해서 커피를 즐기는 남성분들이 카페라는 공간에 오는건 의외라고 하기는 뭐합니다. 다만, 어느 순간부터는 디저트를 즐기기 위해 오시는 남자분들이 딱 있다는 게 느껴집니다. "애초에 커피 따위는 목적이 아니다. 난 디저트를 즐기러 이곳에 온거야" 이런 생각이 주문을 받을 때 느껴집니다. 다름아닌 방금 전에도 그런 느낌의 무리(3명의 남자분)들이 한테이블을 잡고 즐겁게 먹는걸 보다보니.... 새삼스래 옛 생각이 나서 이런 글을 적게 되네요. 물론 아직까지 대부분은 커플! 이라던지 여성분들끼리의 비중이 월등하게 높습니다만, 뭔가 이제 더 이상 이러한 풍경(남자들끼리 라던지 남자 혼자)도 낯선게 아니구나 싶습니다.
