Ethnocentrism : evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one's own culture. 민족주의와 약간은 다른 의미의 단어인데요. 이미 내재되어 있는 자신의 문화를 기준으로 타인의 문화를 이해하는 사상을 이야기합니다. “은연중에 자국의 관습이나 문화를 배경으로 타문화를 받아들임에 있어 자연스레 비교를 하게 되고 그 속에서 자신이 가진 가치관에 준해 어떤것을 평가”하게 되는 것을 일컫는데요.(이 문장은 퍼온글 -_-) 물론 이 ethnocentrism 에스노 센트리즘(에트노센트리즘) 은 우리가 가진 편견과 연관지어 이야기할 수 있는데 이런 ethnocentrism 과 같은 편견을 깨기 위해서는 상대의 문화에 대한 이해의 노력이 있어야합니다. 상대문화에 대한 이해가 없을시에는 우리들 스스로는 쉽게 ethnocentrism 에 빠지게 되기쉽습니다. 그렇다고 아래 미국문화를 소개하는 것이 미국문화 제국주의를 전파하기 위함도 아닌건 당연할꺼구요. 제 생각에는 권력에 대하여 Insane 한 여성과 insane 한 남성은 확률적으로 비슷한 비율로 태어나겠지만 자라면서 사회적으로 남성들만이 insane 함을 영위할 수 있게 만드는 결과는 사회구조적인 문제에 기인하지 않았나 생각이 듭니다. 그리고 그런 구조적인 문제는 미국 사회의 아래 문제점들도 큰 몫을 차지하지 않나 싶습니다. 그래서 미국서는 유럽식의 복지주의 이야기가 계속 거론되구요. 일단, 문화적 이해를 돕기 위해서 미국인30대 전문직분들의 고충이 뭐가 있는가를 이야기해보고 싶어요. 이 이야기는 한쪽 배우자가 80시간은 아니더라도 어느정도 전문직 직업을 가지고 고강도의 회사일을 가진 배우자를 둔 분들 위주로 이야기해봅니다.(최상류층이나 올드머니가 펑펑있으셔서 도우미 풀타임으로 쓰는 분들 말구요..). 1. 가사도우미 고용의 어려움: 일반 미국 중산층이상의 가정들은 풀타임 내니나 풀타임 가사도우미를 고용하기에는 인건비가 높아서 파트타임 가사도우미(청소해주시는분)를 1주일에 3시간 1회 혹은 2주에 1회 정도 고용하는 집들이 많습니다. 주로는 히스패닉 청소도우미, 혹은 가드닝 잔디깍아주는 히스패닉분을 파트타임으로 고용하지요. 가사도우미분들은 보통 100불-150불에 2-3시간 일을 하십니다. (2-3인이 한팀) (제가 한 번도 안이용해보아서 -_-듣기로 그렇게 들었어요.) 그러니 고용하는 측에서는 경제적 부담이 크기때문에, 1주일에 한 번 정도 오셔서 도와주시게 합니다. 올드머니가 많은 분들은 일주일마다 weekly혹은 일주일에 두 번 고용도 가능하겠지만, 30대 일반 변호사 분들 중에 매일 청소해주는 도우미를 고용하고 있는 사람은 많지 않을거라 생각해요. (제 경험치내에서이니..-_-) 하지만, 한국서 대기업?은행에 다니는 친구들은 가사도우미 아줌마를 일주일에 2-3번 4-5시간 혹은 풀타임 매일 8시간 이상 오시게 하는 친구도 있었어요. 그러니 우리나라의 인건비는 상상을 초월하게 저렴한 편이지요. 개인적으로 본 경우는, 미국서는 벤처로 성공한 인도분집에서 풀타임 도우미를 본적이 있어요. 하지만 그 분도 인도에서 데리고 오신분이라는 그러니 제대로된 임금을 주고 고용한 형태는 아닌듯.. 결국, 30대 전문직분들은 1주일 5-6일 가사일은, 일하는 본인들이 그대로 주관해야합니다. (그래서 부부 서로 가사일을 철저히 배분할려고 하는 경향이 많이 보입니다.) 또한 도우미분들은 식사준비는 보통 하지 않으시며 세탁, 침대정리, 화장실, 냉장고 청소 등의 기본적인 일들만 도와줍니다. 직장인부부들은 집밥할 시간이 없으니 외식과 take out 음식을 사들고 오는 일에 의존하게됩니다. 다들 요리를 거의 못해먹고 삽니다. 안해먹고 -_-;; 2.부모님으로부터의 독립:전문직 30대 성인의 부모님이라면 이미 양가부모님이 본인들의 커리어를 가지고 있을 확률이 높고 30대 성인의 부모님은 50대-60대일 확률이 높습니다. 아직 은퇴하기까지는 일르기때문에 부모님께 자녀양육을 도와달라고하기가 어려운 구조입니다.그리고 부모님 동네에서 살고 있지 않을 확률도 높고요. 전문직은 대걔 도시에 집중되어 있으니 자신이 태어나자란 주를 떠나서 타지로 이동하고 부모님이 살지 않은 주나 지역에 정착해있을 확률도 상당히 높습니다. 다른 배경으로는 이혼해서 합친 가정에서 자란 사람들이 의외로 많기 때문에, 부모님과 같은 지역에 산다 하더라도 쉽게 스탭어머니나 아버지께 아이를 부탁하기 어려운 환경입니다. 예외는 당연히 있을꺼구요. 부모님이 손주봐주는 케이스도 있지만 제가 보는 일반적인 케이스가 할아버지가 봐주시는 케이스를 행운이라고 다들 이야기하니 주말에 잠깐 봐주시는 경우이외에는 흔하지는 않았어요. 단 이민자 커뮤니티는 다르구요. 3.아이 학교에서의 부모 참여: 자녀를 본인만큼 잘 자라게하고픈 욕구가 당연히 크지 않을까 싶습니다. 그래서 아이들의 학교 행사에 많은 부모들의 적극적인 참여 요구를 무시하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 한국과 마찬가지로 미국에서도 치맛바람이 만만치 않고 한국보다 높은 PTA (학교 부모모임)부모 모임 참여도 때문에 직장인 부모들의 고충과 스트레스가 만만치 않습니다. 4.배우자의 사회적 성취도: 자녀양육과 본인의 성취도 사이에서의 갈등 제한된 재화로 하는 투자라고 보았을때, 어느 쪽에 투자하는 것이 이득일까요? Insane 한 배우자를 두어서 도움을 전혀 못받는다 할 경우에는 본인의 커리어와 자녀양육을 동시에 잘 하기는 아주 어렵습니다. 슈퍼맨 원더우먼이 되지 않는 이상요. 그래서 경력단절이 두렵기도 하지만 육아에 포커스를 두고 잠시 쉬는 경우가 많고 혹은 그로 인한 스트레스도 만만치가 않게되겠지요. 반대로 즐기는 분들도 꽤 보았습니다. 가사일을 전문직처럼 아주 효율적으로 하시는 분들... 지금의 시대는, 사회 구조적인 문제때문에 직장생활 커리어를 이어가는데 양쪽 성모두 많은 어려움을 겪는 것 같아요. 그래서, 부부가 공동으로 육아를 하고 가정일을 분배하고 경제적으로도 독립적으로 운영하는 이들이 점점 많아 지는 것도 사실인것 같구요. 커리어를 이어가는 전문직 분들은 그런 육아에 대해 이해심이 높은 직장을 선호하고 변호사나 의사들은 작은 로펌이나 커뮤니티 병원처럼 사건을 많이 맞지 않거나 스케줄에서 자유로운곳을 선호하지요. 아니면 한쪽의 희생이나 배려가 있을꺼구요. 예외도 있겠지만, 이상적인것은 부부란 협력해가면서 육아를 서로 잘 도와주고 가사일도 함께 해서 슬기롭게 직장일과 집안일을 다하면서 커리어를 지켜가는 것이 이상적일터인데...슈퍼맨과 슈퍼우먼을 요구하는 사회이고 모두 힘든 시절을 보내고 있는 것 같아요. 여기에다가, 국내의 편견과 각종 차별을 넘어서 부부 모두가 육아도 하고 커리어를 잘 이어나갈려면 한국의 부부들은 신이 또 되어야 하는 것 같기도 해요. 아무리 부모님이, 도우미가 도와주는 국내부부들이 어드벤티지가 있다고 해도, 이 사회의 차별속에서 일하시는 국내 부부들은 대단하신듯... 미국 사회의 직장인들은 배부른 소리를 하고 있구나 할때도 있어요. 그래서 서양학문을 그대로 우리사회에 적용하거나 우리학문을 그대로 서양에 적용할때 ethonocentrism 에 대한 각별한 유의가 필요한 것 같다고 결론을 맺고 싶어요. 휙 점프래서 뭥밍하는것 같지만..^^ 부족한 부분 이해해주세요. 글쓰기란 넘 어려운것..말도 어렵고 글도 어렵고...ㅠㅠ 사회 카테고리가 생겼네요. 축하축하..원래부터 있었나요? 갸우뚱... 2. 부모와의 연대감이 미국보다 대체적으로 높고 자녀 양육에 있어서 도움을 받을 수 있는 것은 맞죠. 하지만 눈치 엄청 보이고, 불화가 생길 가능성도 높고, 미안해지죠..
3. 아이들의 행사에 부모가 일일이 참여하기가 매우 힘들 겁니다. 워낙 하는 일이 바빠서요. 그리고 많은 수의 부모님들은 그러한 학교 행사, 부모 모임 개개에는 그다지 관심이 없어요. 설령 자녀의 교육 전반에 관심이 있다 하더라도 그건 또 별개의 문제.
4. 출산과 육아 때문에 여성의 직장 커리어가 단절되는 경우가 너무도 많습니다. 우리 어머니도 저를 낳으시고 기르시기 위해서 잠시 일을 쉬셨어요. 그리고 그후에 다시 다른 일을 찾으셨죠. 개인적으로 이 4의 문제(출산, 육아로 인한 직장 커리어 단절 문제)가 한국사회의 성평등과 가족의 행복한 삶을 깨뜨리는 가장 주요한 문제라고 생각해요.
양쪽 성은 생물학적으로 다르고, 사회학적으로도 다른 처지에 처해 있어요. 하지만 저는 후자가 이 두 성에게 미치는 영향이 전자의 그것보다 압도적으로 크다고 개인적으로 생각합니다.
가면 갈수록 부부가 슈퍼맨, 슈퍼우먼이 되기를 요구하는 것이 너무 심한 것 같아요. 자아실현 이전에 기본적인 삶 자체의 영위가 힘든 한국 사회입니다.
