저는 초짜 머신러닝 개발자로 일하고 있는데 원래 대학시절 꿈은 게임개발자였어요. 취업준비생 시절에 한국 게임회사들이 내놓는 게임의 퀄리티에 절망하고 길을 틀었지만 (내 인생에서 최고 잘한 결정!), 게임에 대한 미련을 놓지 못해 퇴근 후 남는 시간에 외국의 게임 개발 오픈소스 프로젝트에 짬짬이 참가하며 대리만족을 하고 있지요. 돈 한 푼도 되지 않는 무료게임이지만 깃허브 누적 커밋 수가 5만개를 넘어가는 나름대로 매니아층이 두터운 게임인데, 참가하다 보면 해외 게임개발자들의 일하는 방식을 지켜볼 수 있어서 참 흥미로운데요. 가장 크게 느꼈던 것은 제가 본 외국 게임개발자들은 게임 내 어떤 요소의 "본질"에 대해 캐치하는 속도가 놀랄만큼 빠르고, 불필요한 요소를 쳐내는 데 있어 주저함이 없다는 것이었어요. 예를 들어 제가 새로운 요소로 제안한 거들이 개발자 토의 과정에서 다음과 같이 reject를 먹기도 하고 구현이 되기도 했는데요. 거절 근거를 보면 다들 납득할만하더라구요. ex 1) 나 : 둔기와 검의 특성이 별로 차이가 없는 것 같다. 둔기에 "일정 확률로 적의 방어력을 절반 무시" 라는 특성을 넣는 게 어떨까? A : 일정 확률로 방어력 무시라는 건 그냥 데미지를 올리는 것과 본질적으로 전혀 차이가 없어. 한마디로 쓰잘데없는 특성이고, 유저들에게 혼란만 줄 뿐이지. 나 : 음, 그러면 검에 "출혈 효과"를 넣는 건 어때? 날붙이니까, 맞으면 체력이 계속 깎이는거지. B : 우리는 이미 "독이 발린 무기"라는 특성을 가지고 있어. "맞으면 체력이 계속 깎이는" 효과는 이미 존재하는 효과인데, 이름만 바뀌고 본질적으로 똑같은 효과를 왜 추가해야 하지? 나 : 그러네. 그러면 둔기에 "둔화 효과" 특성을 넣자. 오금을 맞으면 다리가 저려서 이동 속도가 느려지는거지. C : 이봐, 이미 "냉기 속성 무기"에 이동속도/행동속도 감소 효과가 달려있잖아! A : 좋은 생각이 났다. 검에 "회피 반격" 효과를 넣자. 검은 회피시에 연결동작으로 휘두르기가 쉬운 무기이니까, 일정 확률로 자동 카운터가 나가는거지. B : 그건 나쁘지 않군. ex 2) A : 몬스터들 중 "그리즐리 곰"와 "북극곰" 둘 중 하나는 없애버리는 게 어때? 이 두 몬스터들은 "근접공격만 하고, 보통 속도이며, 피해를 많이 입으면 흉폭해진다" 는 특성을 갖고 있기 때문에 본질적으로 완전히 똑같은 몬스터잖아. 단지 북극곰이 다른 도트, 약간 더 높은 능력치, 경험치를 갖고 있을 뿐이지. 나 : 그거 좋다. B : 그러네. 왜 아직까지도 누군가 하나를 없애버리지 않았지? 아니, 애초에 저 두 몬스터를 처음에 동시에 만든 놈이 누구야? A : 누가 git blame 쳐봐. C : 멸종시키는 건 그리즐리가 좋겠다. 더 약한 걸 없애는게 난이도가 높아져서 재밌으니까. RIP 그리즐리! 이런 과정들로 배우면서 저는 게임을 플레이하는 시선이 굉장히 많이 바뀌게 되었는데 지금 국산 온라인 게임들을 하다보면 "쳐내지 않은 수많은 잔가지"의 요소들이 많이 보이는데요. 예를들어 메X플스토리같은 국내 RPG 게임의 경우 "왔다갔다하면서, 몸통박치기만 하는데, 도트와 능력치, 경험치만 다른 수많은 몬스터"들이 몇백 종류씩 있잖아요. 그렇기 때문에 캐릭터를 키우는 것이 "똑같은 키를 반복해서 누르기만 하는 작업"이 되고 재미없어지죠. 국내 게임들 보면 이런 요소들에 대해 많이 성찰해보는 개발자는 상당히 드물다고 느껴요. 와우같은 게임이 한국에서 나오지 않는 이유가 한국 게임개발자들이 저런 생각을 할 줄 몰라서인지, 아니면 한국 게임회사의 구조가 전문가들의 의견을 최종적으로 비전문가가 받아들여 의사결정하는 비극적인 구조여서인지는 잘 모르겠지만요.
