 중국의 선비가 한 기녀를 사랑하게 되었다. 그 기녀는 선비에게 "선비님께서 만약 제 집 정원 창문 아래서 의자에 앉아 백일 밤을 기다리며 지새운다면, 그때 저는 선비님 사람이 되겠어요." 라고 말했다. 그러나 아흔아홉번째 되던 날 선비는 자리에서 일어나 의자를 팔에 끼고 그곳을 떠났다. - 롤랑 바르트 [사랑의 단상] 중에서 - 왜 일까요? 하룻밤만 더하면 그에게 내려진 일종의 '집행'은 끝나는 셈인데 선비는 왜 떠나버렸을까요? 아흔아홉번째 되던날 의자를 팔에 끼고 떠난 선비를 보며 기녀는 어떤 생각을 했을까요? 여러분의 생각은 어떠십니까? 연인들간의 메세지는 대체로 투명하지 못할 경우가 많습니다. 롤랑 바르트가 인용한 중국의 옛이야기는 이러한 '연인들의 신호의 불투명함'을 극단적으로 부풀려 만든 이야기겠지요. 말하자면 기녀가 선비에게 전한 '기다리라'는 신호의 내용은 선비의 입장에서 매우 이해하기 어려운 것입니다. 백일을 향해 가는 시간동안 기녀의 집 정원 창문 아래서 선비가 전달받은 사랑의 신호는 서서히 붕괴해갔을테지요. 선비는 아마 '나는 누구? 여긴 어디?'하며 회의했을 것입니다. 기녀의 입장에서 이야기해볼까요? 처음에 기녀는 선비를 사랑하지 않았을 것입니다. 선비를 사랑하게 되려면 그녀에게는 현실의 긴장에서 풀려나(말하자면 선비는 기녀가 생각했던 이상형은 아니었겠죠.) 둘에게 내려진 사랑의 운명을 낭만화할 수 있는 계기가 필요했을 겁니다. 사랑에 빠진 순간 여자는 '나는 너고, 너는 나'라는 화엄론적 명제에 묶이고 마는데, 여자에게 이러한 환몽幻夢의 경지는 거저 찾아오는 것이 아닙니다. 홍차넷이 생기기전에 피지알의 질문게시판에 올라오는 수많은 연애에 관한 질문 중 대다수는 '이 여자의 신호를 받아들여야 할 것인가? 말것인가?'였습니다. 중국의 옛이야기에 나오는 선비마냥 남자는 여자가 보낸 신호를 어려워합니다. 그럴 수 밖에 없지요. 여자인 제가 보아도 난해한 신호가 많았으니까요. 상대의 신호를 받아들이고 그에게 내려진 선고없는 형벌을 견뎌야 하는지, 아니면 알쏭달쏭한 신호를 밀쳐내야 하는지에 대해 항상 여러 의견이 분분했던 것으로 기억합니다. 다른 사람의 연애담을 듣는 것은 즐겁습니다. 이제 막 본격적으로 연애를 시작하려는 이들에겐 타인의 연애담을 통해 자신만의 판타지를 만들기도 하고, 실패한 연애담을 반면교사로 삼을 수도 있겠죠. 또 이제 연애를 할 수 없는 처지가 된 기혼자(과연 그럴까 싶기도 하지만)나 이미 연인이 있는 사람들은 짜릿했던 지난 추억을 회고하는 계기가 되거나, 매너리즘에 빠진 연인과의 관계를 되짚어 볼 수도 있게 해주기도 합니다. 무엇이 되었든지 간에 좋습니다. '사랑'이야기니까요. 그럼 이 연애의 희비극을 어떻게 받아들여야 할까요? 롤랑 바르트는 이렇게 처방합니다.
