대개 성소수자라 하면 LGBT, 레즈비언/게이/바이섹슈얼/트랜스젠더를 뜻합니다. 하지만 이 네 가지 유형은 성소수자의 전부가 아니라 그저 가장 대표적인 집단일 뿐입니다. 실제로는 성소수자의 범주는 굉장히 다양한데, 개중에는 젠더퀴어(남자도 여자도 아닌 제 3의 성을 표방함)나 범성애(양성애가 A를 남자로서, B를 여자로서 끌리는 것과 달리 범성애는 A나 B를 어떤 특정한 성에 구애되지 않고 끌림) 같이 얼핏 들어선 무슨 소리인지 쉽게 이해하기 어려운 개념들도 있습니다. 오늘 말할 것은 LGBTAIQ 중 A에 해당하는 '무성애(Asexual)'에 관한 이야기입니다. 우리에게 가장 익숙한 레즈비언이나 게이 같은 성소수자는 성적 지향에 따른 분류입니다. 여자로서 여자에게 끌리면 레즈비언, 남자로서 남자에게 끌리면 게이인 것이죠. 킨제이 리포트를 잘 아실 겁니다. 킨제이는 인간의 성적 기호를 0에서 6까지의 스펙트럼으로 놓았고, 여기서 0은 확고한 이성애자, 6은 확고한 게이나 레즈비언, 그 중간은 양성애적 성향을 의미합니다. 하지만 이 조사의 맹점 중 하나는 0이든 6이든 기본적으로 피조사자가 성애에 관하여 높은 관심이 있음을 가정하고 있다는 것입니다. 실제로는 성애에 높은 관심이 있는 사람이 있는 반면 절대 거부까지는 아니더라도 성적인 것이 인생의 중대한 목표가 아니라고 여기는 사람도 있는데 말이죠. 어떤 남성이 남성과의 성애엔 전혀 관심이 없지만, 반대급부로 여성에게 그다지 끌리는 것도 아니라면, 그의 성적 스펙트럼은 어디에 있는 걸까요? 그를 여성과의 성적 관계에 큰 관심이 있는 일반적인 이성애자들과 같은 선상에 둘 수 있을까요? 킨제이는 이러한 사람들을 'X', 즉 미지수로 놓았습니다. 번외라는 거죠.  (킨제이식 그래프, 0은 배타적 이성애, 3은 이성애와 동성애 정도가 동등, 6은 배타적 동성애를 뜻합니다. 그런데 그렇다면 3은 이성과 동성에게 각각 '적당히' 끌리는 것일까요, '격렬하게' 끌리는 것일까요?) 킨제이 리포트로부터 약 25년 뒤에 이뤄진 마이클 스톰스의 조사는 이를 보완합니다. 어떤 사람이 동성에 대해 느끼는 성적 매력을 1에서 7단계의 세로축으로 놓고, 이성에 대해 느끼는 성적 매력을 같은 방식의 가로축으로 놓는 거죠. 동성과 이성에 대해 모두 높은 성적 매력을 느낀다면 그는 양성애자며, 양쪽 모두에게 성적 매력을 느끼는 척도가 낮다면 그는 무성애자인 셈이죠.  (가로축은 Hetero-Eroticism, 이성애적 성향을 뜻하고 세로축은 Homo-Eroticism, 동성애적 성향을 뜻합니다.) 그런데, 어떻게 사람으로 태어나서 누군가에게 성적 매력을 느끼지 못할 수 있을까요? 엄마 뱃속에서 어떤 부분이 결핍된 채 태어난 사람들일까요? '어떻게 사람이 동성을 좋아할 수 있지'에서 퀴어(Queer, 본래는 '기묘한', '괴상한'의 의미)가 생겨난 것처럼, 무성애는 '어떻게 사람이 누군가를 성적으로 좋아하지 않을 수 있지'라는 유성애적인 의문에 의해 [퀴어 속의 퀴어]가 됩니다. 동성애는 이제 어느 정도 주류 문화에 편입된 반면, 이제 막 그 담론이 형성된 무성애는 동성애가 그러했듯 초기적인 오해를 받고 있습니다. 아메바, 수도승, 모태솔로, 감정의 메마름, 일종의 장애나 결핍 증세, 성욕 감퇴나 섹스리스 등이 무성애가 가진 이미지일 것입니다. (일단 그런게 있다면) 하지만 대부분의 무성애자는 성욕이 없는 것도, 누군가를 사랑할 줄 모르는 사람들도 아닙니다. 무성애를 이해하려면 우선 역설적으로 [성애란 무엇인가?]라는 질문을 던져야 합니다. 흔히 섹스를 비롯한 성적 행위, 즉 '성애'는 로맨스와 동의어로 사용되며 그것 자체가 곧 사랑이라고 여겨지지만, 실제로는 로맨틱적인 지향과 성적 지향은 겹치는 부분이 많기는 해도 엄밀히 말해 다른 영역입니다. 로맨틱함이란 정서적 문제이고, 성적 매혹이란 육체적인 문제이기 때문이죠. 사랑 없는 섹스가 가능한 것이라면, 섹스 없는 사랑도 가능할 것입니다. 요컨대 이성애니, 동성애니, 무성애니 하는 것들은 '누구를 사랑하느냐'에 달린 문제가 아니라 '누구에게 육체적으로 끌리느냐'의 문제인 것이죠. 물론 이미지대로 '아무도 사랑하지 않는', 다시 말해 어떤 로맨틱한 매력도 느끼지 못하는 사람도 있습니다. 이들은 Aromantic이고, 이들은 대개 Asexual이기도 할 것이지만 꼭 그러리란 보장은 없습니다. 더불어 Aromantic이라고 해서 감정이 없는 사람인 것도 아닙니다. '연애적인 감정'을 지향하지 않을 뿐, 인간적인 호감도 외로움도 갖고 있는 보통의 사람입니다. 그리고 또 군대나 교도소, 혹은 전근대의 남색가들의 예에서 알 수 있듯이, '누구와 섹스를 하느냐'가 '누구에게 육체적으로 끌리는가'와 동일한 질문인 것은 아니기도 합니다. 제가 써놓고도 되게 모호하긴 하지만, 어쨌든 그렇습니다. 그들에게 당신은 게이냐고 묻는다면 대부분은 격한 반감을 드러낼 거에요. 현대엔 사회적인 압박에 의해 커밍아웃하지 못하고(혹은 본인도 깨닫지 못하고) 이성과의 성관계를 주로 하는 동성애자나 동성애 성향의 사람들도 있죠. 무성애자들의 경우도 마찬가지입니다. 전부는 아니지만 그들 중 일부는 실제로 개인적 혹은 파트너가 있는 성적 행위를 하고, 또 일부는 그 느낌을 즐기기까지 합니다. 그 이유는 일종의 호기심, (로맨틱한) 파트너를 만족시키기 위한 배려, 자기 안의 무언가를 배출하는 생리현상적인 것, 혹은 단순한 유희거리 등으로 <무성애를 말하다>의 저자 앤서니 보거트는 설명합니다. 무성애자의 수는 어느 정도일까요? 역시 <무성애를 말하다>에서 저자는 여러 조사자료를 통해 그 숫자를 약 1% 정도로 추론하고 있습니다. 조사 방식이나 도출된 결론이 썩 마음에 들진 않지만, 무성애에 관한 연구가 굉장히 초기 단계기도 하고 이것은 동성애와 다르게 '없는 것'에 대한 조사이기 때문에 더욱 판독이 어려운 점도 있습니다. 어쨌든 중요한 것은 [그들이 존재한다]는 사실이죠. 지나가는 사람 중 몇명 중 한 명이 동성애자라고 생각하기는 쉽지 않지만, 각종 조사에서 동성애 인구는 5~10% 정도로 추산되며 이것이 결코 무시할만큼의 수치가 아닌 것처럼요. 저자에 따르면 무성애의 1%가 너무 많다고 생각하는 사람은 주로 남성이며, 여성의 경우 1%란 수치가 너무 적다고 생각하는 경향이 있었다고 합니다. 또 무성애적 성향, 무성애적 관계가 남성보다 여성에게서 훨씬 많이 발견된다는 언급도 합니다. 무성애는 반성애주의, 다시말해 '나는 섹스가 싫고 반대한다'와는 다른 것입니다. 경우에 따라 성적 행위를 할 때도 있지만 [대체적으로 관심없음]에 가깝죠. 이를테면 저는 젠더적으로 확실한 보통의 남성이며, 포르노를 꽤 즐겨보고(부끄), 아름다운 여성의 외모와 신체에 분명한 호감을 느낍니다. 하지만 현실과 미디어의 여성에 대해 성적 관계를 꿈꾸지는 않으며, 특히 독점욕은 아예 없습니다. 포옹 정도의 스킨쉽을 애호하지만 결단코 성적인 함의는 없다고 단언할 수 있습니다. 이성 혐오나 이성 기피증 역시 더더욱 아닙니다. 저는 오히려 여성 혐오적인 것들에 대해 강력히 반대해왔으며, 그렇다고 여성을 무언가 신적인 존재로 상정해 과도한 찬양을 하지도 않지요. 그리고 실제 생활에서도 그럭저럭 여자들에게 어떻게 대해야 하는 지 아는 편이라고 생각합니다. (친구가 거의 없는 건 둘째치고) 오히려 스스로 우려하는 것은 언젠가 '자위의 발전된 형태'로서 성매매를 하게 될 지도 모른다는 거에요. 물론 아직까지는 성매매에 대한 개인적/사회적 혐오감이 여전합니다만, 성적이거나 연애적인 이유에서 그런 것은 아닙니다. 반면 (여성에 대한) 로맨틱적인 지향의 경우 수년 간 누군가를 사모했던 경험도 있기에 확실히 존재함을 느낍니다. 하지만 그 감정이 남들만큼 절절한 것도, 연애적인 관계를 맺고 싶다는 생각도 드는 것도 아니에요. 타인의 남자친구나 여자친구가 어떤지 궁금하지도, 질투심이나 부러운 감정도 없습니다. 오히려 관심있는 건 미디어에 의해 형성된 연애죠. 로맨스 영화나 소설, 우결 같은 것들이요. 말하자면 저는 Asexual이자 Grayromantic(회색분자, 중간지점)이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. '섹스나 연애가 하기 싫으면 그냥 안하면 되지, 왜 거기에 '무성애'라는 거창한 말을 붙이는가'라고 묻는 사람들도 있을 것입니다. 사실 저 역시 스스로를 무성애자라고 완전히 규정한 상태는 아닙니다. 동성애는 뇌 반응이나 유전학적 연구 같은 과학적 자료가 그 존재를 뒷받침해주지만, 무성애에 관한 연구는 '내가 무성애자인 이유는 무성애자이기 때문이다'라는 식의 자기보고식 답변에 크게 의존하고 있기도 합니다. 저는 '니가 무성애를 표방하는 이유는 너의 성적 지향을 감추기 위함 아니냐'라는 독설 섞인 질문에 저는 아니라고 상대를 논파할 자신이 없습니다. 하지만 무성애의 실체보다 중요한 것은 그것을 정체성으로 규정함으로써 성애가 일종의 절대적인 가치가 되어버린 현대 사회에 반기를 드는 것입니다. 성애에 관심이 없는 것이 어떠한 발달되지 않은 상태가 아닌, 이성애나 동성애와 동일한 선상에서 논의해야 할 가치라고 말이죠. 누가 더 상황이 나쁘다 비교할 문제는 아니지만, 동성애자들은 오히려 소수자라는 확고한 의식이 있기에 유대감을 갖고 세력화할 능력이 있지 않습니까. 하지만 무성애에는 강력한 의지를 가진 개인이 아닌 이상에야 그처럼 세력화하기 어렵고, 따라서 공론화되기에도 더욱 어려운 면이 있습니다. 요컨대 개인 단위에서 동성애는 독신주의로 위장할 수 있는 무성애보다 스트레스를 받지만, 집단의 단위로 들어가면 무성애는 동성애보다 더 큰 핍박을 받는 셈입니다.  무성애의 표식은 케이크 위에 무성애 깃발이 꼽힌 그림입니다. 달콤한 케이크 한 조각이 (섹스보다) 낫다는 뜻이죠. 세상에는 다양한 즐거운 것들이 많습니다. 섹스나 연애도 분명 그 중 하나겠지요. 하지만 여행에 관심이 없다고 여행 장애가 아닌 것처럼, 섹스나 연애에 관심이 없는 사람은 그냥 관심이 없을 뿐입니다.
