90년대 중후반...개인적으로 그때가 아마 마지막으로 메탈음악에 관심을 갖던 시기였던 것 같습니다. 2000년대로 넘어오면서는 메탈이고 뭐고 음악에 대한 관심 자체가 팍 사그라들어서 어떤 장르의 음악이 대세이고 어떤 밴드들이 핫한지 찾아보는 것도 그만 뒀던 것 같습니다. (덕분에 80년대 90년대 음악들만 무한 반복...--;;;) 그래도 그런 와중에 한 번이라도 연이 닿았던 밴드들은 나름 다 애정을 가지고 좋든 싫든 음악을 들었던 것 같은데 그 가운데 단 한 밴드는 결국 끝까지 저하고는 함께 하지 못하고 악연으로 남고 말았습니다. 그 밴드의 이름은 바로 "카니발 콥스(Cannibal Corpse)" 였습니다. 저는 처음에 이 밴드를 음악으로 알게 된 것이 아니고 앨범 재킷으로 알게 되었습니다. 이들의 앨범 재킷들은 뭐랄까 한 마디로 말해서 남들에게 변태나 싸이코패스로 오해받을까봐 감히 발설조차 할 수 없는 그런 내면 깊숙한 곳의 은밀하고 추악한 욕망을 그냥 대놓고 다 드러내 놓는 그런 앨범 재킷들이었습니다. 영아살인, 시체훼손, 노골적인 성행위 묘사 등...정말 말로는 설명하기 힘든 그런 고어(Gore)적인 장면들을 거리낌 없이 묘사하는 이들의 앨범재킷은 일단 한 번 눈길을 보내게 되면 도저히 그냥 지나쳐버릴 수 없는 악마의 유혹과도 같은 그런 종류의 재킷들이었습니다. 한 눈에 봐도 이들은 "센" 음악을 하는 밴드 같았습니다. 본조비 같은 밴드(본조비 팬 분들에게는 죄송...-;;;)가 부르는 시시한 록발라드 따위는 결코 부를 수 없는 밴드 이름이었고 앨범 재킷들이었습니다. 갑자기 이들의 음악이 궁금해졌습니다. 재킷 견적으로 봤을 때 메탈리카보다도 더 센 친구들인 건 확실해 보였습니다. 게다가 마침 그 당시 국내에 이들의 베스트 앨범이라는 것이 하나 발매가 된 상태였습니다. 제목이 "Deadly Corpes"인가 뭐 그랬던 것으로 기억이 나는데 그래서 그 앨범을 하나 샀습니다. (그런데 나중에 이 앨범이 정식으로 심의를 받지 않고 불법으로 발매된 앨범이라고 해서 앨범 기획자가 구속되고 그랬었습니다. 기독교 단체들이 이 앨범을 사탄의 음악이라고 검찰에 고발하고 하면서 그 당시 난리가 좀 났었던 것으로 기억합니다.) 그런데 집에 이 앨범을 가지고 와서 시디 플레이어에 넣고 플레이 버튼을 누른 순간...저는 그만 제 귀를 의심하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 음알못이라 뭐라고 전문적인 용어를 사용해서 설명을 드릴 순 없고 순전히 저의 눈높이에서 설명을 드리자면 일단 드럼이 엄청 빠른 비트로 몰아칩니다. 그리고 베이스 기타와 리드 기타도 엄청 속주로 연주가 됩니다. 드럼이고 기타고 그런 건 다 좋은데 문제는 보컬이었습니다. 이놈의 보컬을 담당하는 친구가 부르라는 노래는 안 부르고 무슨 절균지 비명인지 모를 소리를 마구 내지르는 것이었습니다. 이게 우리말로 표현하기가 힘든데 그나마 최대한 비슷하게 묘사하자면... "그으으으으~~~~뤄워워워어~~~~으르르르~~~~뤄어어어~~~!!!" 이런 소리가 무한 반복이 되는 것이었습니다. 보컬은 처음부터 가사를 전달하겠다는 의도 자체가 아예 없어 보였고...차라리 그건 어떻게든 참아 보겠는데 (어차피 원어민도 아니고 가사 귀에 쏙쏙 들어오는 팝송이 어디 흔합니까?) 문제는 노래(라고 불러도 될지)가 멜로디 라인이 전혀 없다는 것이었습니다. 그냥 목에 생선 가시가 박혔는데 10년째 그 가시를 어떻게든 빼 보겠다고 "우웩~우웩~" 하고 있는 것만 같았습니다. 카니발 콥스가 데쓰메탈이라는 장르를 하는 밴드라는 건 나중에야 알게 되었습니다. 데쓰메탈이라는 장르 자체가 저에게는 생소한 것이었습니다. 저는 카니발 콥스가 그저 메탈리카에서 좀 더 강력해진 버전의 밴드일 거라고만 생각했는데 아예 장르 자체가 다른 밴드였지요. 제가 처음에 웬만큼 음악이 귀에 안 들어와도 여러 번 들으면서 귀에 익히는 스타일인데 이 카니발 콥스의 앨범은 처음 한 15분 정도 듣고 나서 바로 스톱 버튼을 눌러버렸습니다. 그리고 조용히 시디를 빼내서 케이스에 다시 집어넣었습니다. 그 뒤로 그 시디는 결코 다시는 플레이어에 걸리지 못했으며 시디 케이스 자체가 열리는 일이 없었습니다. 저는 그때 이후로 어디서 저절로 들려서 들었으면 모를까 다시는 카니발 콥스의 음악을 일부러 찾아서 듣지는 않았습니다. 그런데 이쯤에서 좀 궁금해지는 게 있습니다. 과연 이런 종류의 음악을 저만 도저히 못 듣겠는 건지 아니면 다른 분들도 그렇게 느끼는지 한 번 알고 싶어 졌습니다. 그래서 여기에 이들의 곡 하나를 링크 걸어봅니다. 홍차넷 회원님들도 한번 들어보시고 의견을 말씀해 주세요. 제가 지나치게 편협한 것인지 아니면 음악 자체가 정말로 수용하기가 좀 힘든 종류의 것인지 여러분들의 솔직하고 냉정한 의견을 듣고 싶습니다. 여기에 올린 곡은 이들이 1992년에 발표한 앨범 [Tomb of the Mutilated]에 첫 번째 트랙인 [Hammer Smashed Face]입니다. 우리말로 번역하면 [망치로 짓이긴 얼굴]인데...상당히 중2병스러운 곡명이네요...--;;; Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 0 이 게시판에 등록된 Neandertal님의 최근 게시물

좋은 음악을 들으셨군요. 카니발 콥스나 디어사이드가 데스메탈 중에선 대중적인 밴드들이죠. 메탈리카 다음에 이쪽으로 확 넘어오면 좀 힘드시구여... 세풀투라나 슬레이어로 좀 단련을 하고 넘어오시면 괜찮아여. 왜 스래쉬메탈 4대밴드 해서 메탈리카, 슬레이어, 앤스랙스, 세풀투라 그러잖아요. 저는 개인적으로 이런 분류 싫어하는데, 스래쉬메탈은 이런거다 하고 소개할때는 편하긴 하더라구요.
그래도 hammer smashed face가 카니발 콥스 중에서 기타 리프가 살아있는 곡이고, 데스메탈 통틀어서도 멜로디 라인이 괜찮은 대중적인 곡... 더 보기
