bgm은 마음 가시는 걸로 ( '-') "전쟁은 국가의 중대사요 삶과 죽음의 갈림길이며 존망의 갈래이니 마땅히 살피지 않으면 안 된다." - 손자병법 시계편 사신을 보내 화친을 청하긴 했지만, 오히려 이 전쟁을 고려가 원한 게 아닌가 하는 생각도 듭니다. 계속 공격을 받으면서도 붙잡아놓은 사신을 풀어주지도 않고, 송의 연호를 쓰는 등 맞섰거든요. 거란 역시 이 전쟁이 중요했지만, 방어하는 입장인 고려에게는 나라가 흥하느냐 망하느냐의 갈림길이었습니다. 2차 전쟁에서 나라가 망할뻔 했는데도 그랬다는 건, 이제 승산이 있다고 생각해서였겠죠. 2차전 후에도 국경에서 분쟁은 계속되고 있었습니다. 아예 확실히 상대를 제압해야만 이걸 끝낼 수 있었습니다. 1. 전세의 변화 "전쟁에 앞서 계책에서 이기는 건, 승산을 얻은 게 많아서이다." - 시계편 1017년 가을 7월에 거란의 광정 등 7호가 와서 의탁하였다. 송의 천주 사람 임인복 등 40명이 와서 토산물을 바쳤다. 여진 말갈의 목사가 부락을 거느리고 내조하니, 작을 주고 이어 의물을 내려주었다. 동여진의 개다불 등 4명이 와서 의탁하고 변경에서 공을 세워 바치겠다고 청하니, 허락하고 예물을 후하게 주었다. 서여진의 개신이 거란 동경의 중 도준을 사로잡아 왔다. 흑수말갈 아리불 등 6명이 와서 의탁하니 강남의 주ㆍ현에 나누어 살게 하였다. 9월에 거란의 군기곤기와 여진의 고저 등 10호가 와서 의탁하였다. 거란의 오두 등 8명이 와서 의탁하였다. 1018년 서여진의 미알달 등 7명이 와서 갑옷과 투구ㆍ말을 바쳤다. 정안국 사람 골수가 도망해 왔다. 동여진의 서율불과 서여진의 아주 등 40여 명이 와서 말과 갑옷, 투구, 깃발, 초서ㆍ청서의 모피를 바쳤다. 서여진의 능거ㆍ거이 등이 와서 가죽과 쇠갑옷ㆍ말을 바쳤다. 동여진의 유어가 부락을 거느리고 와서 말과 초피를 바치니 의물을 내려주었다. 서여진 마문ㆍ마알달 등이 와서 말을 바치니 재물을 내려주었다. 거란의 장정 등 4명이 와서 의탁하였다. 3월에 거란의 송광습ㆍ이개 등 10여 명이 와서 의탁하였다. 동여진의 아리고와 서여진의 능거 등 백여 명이 와서 방물을 바치니 모두 작을 내려주고 또 필단을 내려주었다. 동여진의 구타라와 서여진의 거일 등 20여 명이 와서 말과 기물ㆍ무기를 바치니 의물을 내려주었다. 서여진의 목사ㆍ목개 등 2백 호가 와서 의탁하였다. 동여진의 추장 아로대 등이 와서 말과 초서피를 바치니 의물을 내려주었다. 송의 강남 사람 왕숙자 등 24명이 와서 토산물을 바쳤다. 5월에 거란의 사부(史夫)가 와서 의탁하였다. 동여진의 우나ㆍ특오ㆍ이불 등 30여 명이 와서 말과 병기를 바치니 모두 작과 의물을 내려주었다 후 여기까지... 이후에도 거란이 쳐들어오기까지 여진의 조공 행렬은 계속 이어집니다. 여진뿐만이 아니었죠. 다른 누구도 아닌 거란에서 고려에 항복해 오기 시작했습니다. 여기에 마지막까지 남은 발해인, 정안국의 유민들도 고려에 복속을 요청하고 결국 귀화했죠. 송에서도 이런 저런 물자를 보낼 정도면 말 다 했죠. 고려 서북의 초토화와 개경 함락, 왕의 입조까지... 2차전 직후에는 분명 거란이 승기를 잡고 있었습니다. 하지만 1017년까지의 전투에서 고려가 이를 모두 막아내면서 중심추가 조금씩 기울기 시작합니다. 거란에 잘 보이려 했든 거란에 밀려서 그랬든 고려를 공격했던 여진족들이 다시 고려 편을 들기 시작했고, 송과의 친교도 재개됐고, 거란에서도 투항하는 이까지 생기는 상황, 거란에서 이를 좌시할 수는 없었습니다. 이 해 5월, 한 사람이 서경 유수가 됩니다. 현종이 직접 임명장에 이렇게 적어 주었죠. "경술 연간에 오랑캐의 난리가 있어 군사가 깊이 한강 가에까지 들어왔도다. 그 당시에 강공(公)의 계책을 쓰지 않았더라면 온 나라가 모두 오랑캐의 옷을 입는 사람이 되었을 것이다"  그가 바로 강감찬이었습니다. 그는 후삼국통일의 공신인 강궁진의 아들로 태어날 때 문곡성이 하늘에서 내려왔다고 합니다. 북두칠성의 네번째 별로 문文과 재물을 관장하는 별입니다. 서울의 낙성대(落星垈)가 바로 그가 태어난 곳이라고 하죠. 키도 작고 못생겼지만 +) 왜 무武곡성이 아니라 문이냐고 하자면... 고려는 무를 천시했으니까요 -_-a 대장들은 다 문과 출신이었고 강감찬도 그랬습니다. 판관 포청천으로 유명한 송나라의 포증도 문곡성과 관련된 일화가 있는데, 둘은 동시대 사람이었죠. 포증 쪽이 한참 어립니다. 2. 전쟁의 시작 "승리하는 군대는 먼저 이기고 나중에 싸운다." - 군형편 "전쟁에서 알아야 할 다섯 가지. 하나는 도(道), 둘은 하늘, 셋은 땅, 넷은 장수, 다섯은 법이다." - 시계편 1018년 12월, 소배압은 10만 대군을 이끌고 남하하기 시작했습니다. 이에 맞서 현종은 강감찬을 상원수로, 강민첨을 부원수로 삼아 영주, 지금의 안주로 보냅니다. 총병력 20만 8천 3백이었습니다. 강민첨은 2차 전쟁 당시 서경을 결국 지켜냈던 이, 그것으로 현종에게 큰 신뢰를 받은 것으로 보입니다. 80만, 40만으로 떠들어댔던 1, 2차에 비해 단 10만이 내려온 것은 확실한 목표가 있어서였죠. 강동 6주의 우주방어를 뚫을 방법을 거란은 찾아내지 못 했습니다. 이 상황에서 이길 방법은 단 하나, 2차 전쟁처럼 개경으로 바로 쳐들어가서 어떻게든 고려왕의 항복을 받아내는 것이었죠. 마치 병자호란 때의 청 태종처럼, 소배압은 다른 건 모두 무시하고 남진하였습니다. 이에 대한 고려의 해답은 전쟁 전반에 걸쳐 나타납니다. 수는 더 적었지만 10만은 거란이 자랑하는 최고의 정예병이었고, 이들과는 가급적 정면 승부를 하면 안 되었습니다. 하지만 반드시 이겨야 했죠. 그것도 2차 때처럼 뒤를 치는 것으로 끝내면 안 됐습니다. 다시는 고려를 노리지 못 할 정도의 철저한 승리가 필요했죠. 송과 여진이 확실히 고려 편을 들고, 우주방어를 깨뜨릴 수 없는 상황, 하지만 그렇기에 거란은 더욱 고려를 쳐야 했습니다. 이 상황대로 가면 고려 쪽으로 무게중심이 넘어가 버리니까요. 이렇게 강요된 전쟁, 거란은 이미 시작부터 지고 있었습니다. 고려의 실수를 바랄 수밖에 없었습니다만, 강감찬이 이끄는 고려군은 한 치의 실수도 없이 작전을 전개합니다. "적이 물을 건너서 오면 적이 물 안에 있을 때 맞서지 말고 절반은 건너게 만들고서 치는 게 이롭다." - 행군편 첫 수는 흥화진. 강감찬은 정예 기병 1만 2천을 매복한 후 큰 밧줄로 쇠가죽을 꿰어 강을 막습니다. 적이 강을 건너자 막았던 물을 흘려보냈고, 늘어난 강물은 거란군을 덮칩니다. 이 틈을 타 큰 승리를 거두죠. 살수대첩처럼 물로 승리한 전투로 알려져 있지만, 흔히 나오는 것처럼 해일을 일으켜 몰살시켰다기보다는 이걸로 적을 혼란시킨 후 기습했다고 봐야 됩니다. 현대 기술로도 단기간에 이렇게 하는 건 힘들고, 물살이 조금만 더 세져도 제대로 서 있을 수 없으니까요. +) 살수대첩도 흔히 알려진 것처럼 물로 쓸어버린 건 아니었구요 3. 소배압, 남하 하지만 소배압은 작정한 듯이 남하를 계속합니다. 강민첨은 이를 자주까지 쫓아가 깨뜨렸고, 시랑 조원은 이를 이어받아 마탄, 평양 동쪽에서 공격해 큰 승리를 거둡니다. "적이 느긋하면 적을 힘들게 하고, 적이 배부르면 굶주리게 하고, 적이 쉬면 적을 움직여라. 적이 반드시 달려나올 요충지에 출격하고, 적이 에상하지 못한 위치를 급습하라. - 허실편 피아의 강약이 확실한 상황, 강감찬은 정면승부 대신 지속적인 치고 빠지기를 구사합니다. 거란군이 겨우 고려군의 공격에서 벗어나 남하하자 강감찬은 병마판관 김종현의 기병 1만으로 개경으로 구원하게 합니다. 소배압이 압록강을 건넌 게 12월 며칠지는 확실하지 않지만 3일에 개성에서 100리, 40km까지 진입했다니 그렇게까지 느리진 않았던 것 같습니다. 하지만 문제는 김종현의 병력이 더 빨리 도착했던 것이었죠. 딴 것 다 무시하고 개경으로 달렸는데도 그 정도라면, 중간에 얼마나 시달렸는지 짐작할 만 하죠. 하지만 겨우 개경 근처까지 온 소배압은 충격적인 광경을 보게 됩니다. "훌륭히 지키는 것이란, 적이 어디를 쳐야 할지 모르게 하는 것이다." - 허실편 사람은커녕 먹을 양식도 거처할 민가도 없는 황폐한 땅이었습니다. 청야 작전이었죠. 거란군은 압록강이 얼어붙은 걸 이용해서 왔지만, 그만큼 추위를 피할 곳이 필요했습니다. 하지만 고려는 아무것도 남기지 않았죠. 그리고 개경에는 김종현의 정예 기병은 물론 동북의 병력들도 합류했고, 성의 방어력도 2차 전쟁에 비할 수 없이 향상돼 있었습니다. 단기간에 함락시킬 방법이 없었죠. 소배압은 마지막 작전을 씁니다. 고려에 회군할 것을 통보하고 기병 300으로 개경 근처까지 가게 한 것이었죠. 하지만 고려에선 이것도 알아챕니다. 한밤 중에 1백여 명으로 이들을 기습, 전멸시키죠. 더 이상의 방법은 없었습니다. 소배압은 한 치의 땅도, 한 톨의 쌀도 얻지 못 하고 쓸쓸히 후퇴합니다. 하지만 이들을 놓아줄 고려군이 아니었죠. 4. 외통수  "장수가 잘하고 군주가 안 막으면 이긴다" - 모공편 동서고금을 통틀어 패전한 장수는 그 장수의 능력보다 상부의 명령이 더 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다. 단적으로 그렇게 잘 나가던 독일군이 망한 이유 중에 많이 컸던 게 히틀러가 온갖 제한을 걸어둔 것이었죠. (그거 없었다고 독일이 전쟁에서 이기진 못했겠지만요 -_-;) 하다못해 원균도 자기가 자초한 것이라 해도 선조가 그리 밀어붙이지 않았다면 최악의 사태는 벌어지지 않았을 겁니다. 소배압의 선택이 그리 틀리진 않았습니다. 아니 애초에 강동 6주를 점령할 수 없는 상황에서 그는 최선의 선택을 한 것이었습니다. 문제는 고려군이 그걸 철저히 파고들었다는 것이었죠. 그리고 그는 개경을 점령하기 전에는 후퇴할 수 없었습니다. 그의 능력 이전에 그가 할 수 있는 작전은 한계가 있었습니다. 개경 점령만을 목표로 하고 들어 왔으니까요. 반면 강감찬의 고려군은 무리하게 치지 않았고, 개경으로 가는 적을 정면으로 막지도 않았습니다. 개경에는 개경만의 방비가 완비가 돼 있었죠. 그리고 거란군의 퇴각도 그리 순조롭지는 않았습니다. 강감찬은 병력을 보내 청천강을 건너는 거란군에 또 다시 타격을 줍니다. 역시 거란군에게 아픈 타격을 입혔죠. 만약 현종이 남하하는 거란군에 겁 먹고 고려군에게 싸우라고 닥달했다면? 그래서 주력끼리 붙었다가 패했다면? 결과는 모를 일이죠.  "진격할 때는 바람처럼 빠르게 하고, 정지할 때는 숲처럼 고요하게 하며, 적을 치고 앗을 때는 불처럼 맹렬하게 하고, 방어할 때는 산처럼 무겁게 해야 한다." 風林火山 - 군쟁편 이제 남은 건 결전이었죠. 뒤를 쳐서 피해를 입히는 정도가 아니라, 고려를 공격할 수 있는 거란군의 주력을 없애버려야 했습니다. 고려를 겁박하고 공격하려는 의지까지도 말이죠. 개경으로 보낸 김종현의 병력 이외에는 다른 병력은 모두 집결한 것으로 보입니다. (정확한 병력 수는 나오지 않습니다) 그렇게 볼 경우 고려군은 20만, 거란군은 10만 이내로, 그나마 상처투성이였죠. 임진왜란 등에서도 그렇고 우리는 뭔가 소수로 다수를 치는 것을 대단하게 여기지만, 손자병법에서 가장 중요시 여기는 것을 잊어서는 안 됩니다. "곧 우리 병력은 많고 적 병력은 적으니, 많은 병력으로 적은 병력을 친다면, 우리와 싸울 상대는 꼼짝 못한다." - 허실 "용병의 방법은, 우리가 적보다 열 배 많으면 포위하고, 다섯 배면 그대로 공격하고, 두 배면 나누어 협공하고, 비슷하면 잘 싸우고, [병력이 적으면 잘 달아나고], 너무 열세면 피하라. 작은 병력이 고집한들 큰 병력에게 잡히는 법이다." - 모공 이에 대해선 다음 편에서 다시 얘기하겠습니다. 고려군 20만 vs 거란군 10만. 강감찬은 참고 참았던 정면 승부를 겁니다. 하지만 역시 만만하지는 않았습니다. 그렇게 찌르고 찔렀고, 그렇게 굶주렸음에도 거란군은 딱히 흩어지지 않고 제대로 편제를 유지해서 후퇴하고 있었죠. 소배압의 능력이 그렇게 나쁘지만은 않았던 증거, 아니 요 성종이 소배압을 총사령관으로 삼은 이유일 것입니다. 아무리 병력의 차이가 있다 해도 그리 만만하게 볼 수는 없었죠. 하지만 애초에 후퇴에 급급한 거란군이 이들을 회피하지 않고 승부에 맞섰다는 것, 이는 소배압이 더 이상 달아날 수 없는 외통수에 몰렸다는 것을 의미합니다. 요사에도 전투 직전의 대화는 나오지만, 우회해서 후퇴한다는 선택지는 보이지 않습니다. 아마 강감찬은 이 때 속으로 이렇게 생각했을 겁니다. "대국은 끝났다." 적의 왕을 외통수로 몰았습니다. 모든 승산은 고려에 있었습니다. 이제 남은 것은 정말 고려군이 거란의 정예병을 이길 수 있는가였죠.
