팩트(fact)는 우리 주변에서 관찰되는 일들을 묘사하는 것입니다. 예를 들어 창밖이 밝다라는 건 팩트이지요. 창밖이 밝으면 보통 해가 나서 밝은가보다라는 가설을 세웁니다. 가설이란 건 우리가 증명하는 어떤 것이 아니라 실험해야 할 어떤 것이에요. 그래서 바깥으로 걸어나가서 태양이 밝은 걸 확인하면 가설이 입증된 것이 되고요. 어떤 현상을 설명할 때 '여러 가지' 가설을 세우기도 합니다. 그 중 틀린 것을 지워나가면서 맞는 가설을 추려내는 거죠. 추려진 가설은 새로운 가설을 설명해줄 잠재성을 지니는 것이지 당장 이론으로 발전하는 것은 아닙니다. 이런 가설들이 쌓이고 쌓여서 일관성을 보일 때 우리는 그 결과물들을 총합해 이론을 구축해낼 수 있습니다. 이론이란 어떤 현상이 어떻게 발생하는지 수많은 가설들을 상정해보고 테스트를 거쳐 증명이 된 결과물들을 근거로 현상의 원인을 규명한 것입니다. 이론은 단순히 현상의 원인을 설명하는 것에 그치는 것이 아니라 앞으로 어떤 일이 벌어질 것인가를 예측하도록 해준다는 면에서 인간에게 소중한 정보입니다. 이를테면 진화는 팩트입니다. 명명백백히 발생하고 있는 현실이죠. 그치만 어떻게 진화가 발생하느냐에 대한 질문에 자연선택에 의한 것이라고 상정하는 것은 가설입니다. 그동안 수많은 가설과 실험으로 증명된 사실들이 진화론입니다. 이렇게 이론이라고 하는 것은 감히 진리라고 명명하지 못하는 의심쩍은 썰이 아니고 과학자들이 가장 힘들고 열정적으로 도출해낸, 현재까지는 가장 신뢰할 수 있는 결과물입니다. 중력은 이론일까요 법칙일까요. 과학에서 법칙이라고 하는 것은 보통 어떤 현상이 어떻게 구체적으로 발생하느냐를 수학공식으로 풀어낸 것입니다. 질량이나 에너지가 어떤 수치로 보존되는가와 온도와 기체 속의 분자의 움직임 같은 것은 법칙으로 설명될 수가 있죠. 그치만 법칙은 왜 그런 현상이 발생하는지는 설명하지 않습니다. 중력은 이론임과 동시에 법칙입니다. 뉴튼의 만유인력의 법칙은 두 물체가 어떻게 서로 끌어당기는지를 수학적으로 정확하게 표현할 수가 있습니다. 그러나 왜 그런 현상이 발생하는지는 설명하지 않습니다. 그 현상을 설명하기 위해서는 중력이론(a theroy of Gravity)이 필요합니다. 사과가 떨어지는 현상은 팩트입니다. 우리는 사과의 질량과 거리를 근거로 사과가 얼마만큼의 가속도를 가지고 땅바닥으로 떨어질지를 법칙에 대입하여 알아낼 수 있습니다. 그런데 왜 이런 현상이 발생하는 것일까요? 물체와 물체 사이에는 서로 끌어당기는 힘이 있어서 그런가부다란 가설을 세워봅니다. 아인슈타인은 일반상대성이론을 끌어내었죠. 그런데 다른 과학자들이 보기에 아인슈타인의 일반상대성이론은 양자역학의 미시세계에서는 적용이 되지 않았어요. 비록 우리 인간이 사는 물질세계에서는 일반상대성이론이 이론으로서 손색이 없다 하더라도 아직은 미흡한 점이 있고 이론은 결국 이론일 뿐이긴 합니다. 비록 우주만물을 흡족시키는 이론은 아닐지라도 현재까지는 가장 훌륭한 이론으로 남아 있고 새로운 가설이 검증되면 기존의 이론을 수정하고 발전시킴으로써 예측에 더욱 도움이 되는 이론을 완성하게 되는 것입니다. 빌 나이 아저씨가 그러더라고요. 인간의 지능이 훌륭한 건 예측을 할 줄 알아서이고 과학이 그것을 가능하게 만든다고요.
