90년대 중, 고등학교 시절을 보냈던 제가 나름 빠져 살았던 비주얼락 밴드 EVE의 노래들을 소개할까..합니다. 비주얼락의 정의는 위키를 찾아보니 일본의 대중음악계, 특히 록 밴드에 존재하는 경향, 양식 중 하나이다. 비주얼계적인 특징을 가진 밴드들이 활동하는 씬을 지칭하기도 한다. 축약하여 V계라고 부르거나, 한국에서는 흔히 비주얼 록이라고 부른다. 특정의 사운드를 칭하는 말이 아닌, 시부야계와 같이 청자의 감각적인 판단에 의존하는 부분이 큰 대중음악의 갈래이다. 보통 화장, 화려한 헤어스타일을 비롯한 현란한 차림새를 가장 큰 특징으로 보지만, 이것이 반드시 비주얼계의 필수요소라고는 할 수 없다. 라고 되어 있네요. 당시 제 기억으로는 EVE도 방송에서 비주얼락 밴드라고 했었던 거 같은데..지금도 비주얼락이 정확히 어떤 장르인지는 잘은 모르겠네요... 정의는 이쯤이면 됐고.. 많은 가수 중에 왜 EVE를 좋아하게 됐냐? 하면 그냥 노래가 좋아서였던 거 같습니다. 뭔가 중, 고등학교 시절의 찌질한 감성에 잘 맞는 G.고릴라가 작사/작곡한 곡들의 그런 분위기가 마음에 들어서였을까요? 다른 가수들은 그리 좋아해 본 적 없는데 EVE란 밴드에게 굉장히 빠졌었던 거 같습니다. 나름 앨범도 다 모으고, 콘서트도 몇 번이나 갔으니 말이죠.. 하지만...생각 외로 아쉬운 라이브 실력에 살짝 실망... 보컬인 김세헌이 이미 성대결절이 온 이후라서 어쩔 수 없는 부분도 있었지만.. 그래도 라이브는 조금 아쉬웠어요.. 그럼 이제 잡설은 그만하고 제가 좋아했던 EVE의 노래들을 소개해보고자 하는데.. 조금 많습니다. 관심이 없으신 분들은 뒤로가기를.... 우선 EVE의 노래들이지만 뭔가 빼놓을 수 없는 Girl의 아스피린.. 사실 이 곡은 저도 김세헌이 EVE로 활동하고 조금 시간이 지난 후에 알았습니다. 어쩐지 어디서 많이 본 얼굴이다 했더니..설마 그 사람이 맞을 줄이야... 그럼 girl의 노래는 이쯤이면 됐고..다시 EVE로 돌아가서..1집 타이틀곡이던 너 그럴때면.. 1집은 사실 이 곡 외에 그렇게 확 꽂혔던 노래는 없어서...타이틀곡만 올립니다. 다음으로 2집에서 좋아했던 노래들... 차례대로 타이틀곡 Come on, 서브 타이틀곡 EVE(don't say goodbye), 소녀, monologue(고릴라단독) 입니다. 2집은 사실 거의 전 곡을 다 좋아하긴 했는데 그렇다고 다 넣는 건 좀 그래서.. 다음은 EVE의 앨범 중에서 대중적으로 가장 많이 히트했던 앨범 2개 중 하나인 3집입니다. 차례대로 타이틀곡 아가페, 서브 타이틀곡 LOVER(아마 이 노래가 대중적으로는 가장 유명하지 않을까..), pray 입니다. 3집과 함께 대중적으로 가장 많이 히트했던 앨범 중 하나인 4집입니다. 타이틀곡 i'll be there이 공중파 1위 후보로까지 올라갔는데 아마 1위는 못했던 기억이 있네요... 차례대로 타이틀곡 i'll be there, swear(네..제 닉네임의 어원...이 노래를 아주 좋아라 해서..), wedding cake, angel입니다. 4집도 2집과 마찬가지로 전 곡을 엄청나게 들어서 가사 하나하나 다 외울 정도로 좋아했지만..그럼 소개할 노래가 너무 많아질 거 같아서..이 정도로.. 5집입니다...G.고릴라가 EVE에서 탈퇴한다는 소식을 듣고 상당히 멘붕한 상태에서 나온.. 약간 발라드 소품집? 같았던 느낌의 앨범입니다. 무언가 G.고릴라의 느낌이 전혀 남아 있지 않아서 상당히 아쉬웠던 앨범인데 그래도 노래는 전체적으로 다 괜찮게 듣긴 했습니다. 차례대로 타이틀곡 시간에 기대어, 그녀는 없다, 끝내 하지 못한 이야기입니다. 6집부터는 점점 조금씩 대중에게 멀어져 가던 기억이 있네요.. 대중적 인기가 거의 사그라들기 시작한 시점이 아닐까? 싶습니다. 타이틀곡 ghost school이 너무 대중적이지 못해서...저는 개인적으로 one이 타이틀곡이 되길 바랬는데 말이죠.. 차례대로 one, today, darling입니다. 7집과 8집은 묶어서 하기로 하겠습니다. 뭔가 대중성도 그랬고..저에게도 점점 아쉬워져 가던 앨범이기에.. 차례대로 7집 rainy, 자유로의 여행, 8집 너 하나 없는데로 마치겠습니다. 8집에 my everything은 꼭 넣고 싶었는데 유투브에 없군요..ㅜㅜ 김세헌씨는 결혼도 하시고..더 히스테릭스란 밴드로 활동 중이시던데..저랑 취향이 안 맞아서..최근 곡은 거의 안 들어봤네요.. G. 고릴라는 로엔과 계약이 끝나고 나와서 줄리엣 보컬 출신 김주일과 결혼한 걸로 알고 있는데 최근 활동은 모르겠네요. 개인적으로 시간이 더 흘러서라도 두 분이서 꼭 다시 합쳐서 싱글 정도라도 내주셨으면 하는데..왠지 불가능할 거 같네요... 이상 쓰잘데기 없는 긴 잡설 읽어주셔서 감사합니다...흐흐.. 비쥬얼락은 음악적으로 구분된 장르는 아니고... 세일즈 포인트로 화장과 미소년스러움을 내세워서 락/메탈에 거부감이 강한 여자팬들을 팬덤으로 끌어들인 케이스는 다 비쥬얼 락으로 분류됐습니다. 그래서 음악적으로 인정받고 싶어하는 밴드들은 예외없이 다 탈 비쥬얼 선언을 했죠(해봐야 골수 락메탈 팬덤에서 욕먹긴 매한가지지만). 실제로 비쥬얼 락은 화장에 비해 음악은 보수적이다 못해 참신성이 별로 없는 경우가 대부분입니다. 음악까지 프로그레시브하면 못 듣거든요. 대신 멜로디와 고음을 강조하는 경향이 강하고, 좀 더 역량이 좋은 팀들은 무대 구성을 기깔나게 했죠. 이브도 그런 점에서 꽤 퀄리티가 괜찮은 비쥬얼 락 밴드였다고 생각해요.
