저는 해군이었습니다. 6주간의 혹독한 훈련과 천국 같은 4주 후반기 교육을 마치고 지옥선을 타게 되었죠. 정확히 기억은 안나지만 약 250에서 300명 가량의 승조원이 있는 구축함이었습니다. 물이 가득 찬 양동이를 들고 있다가 선임이 부르면 ‘악!’소리와 함께 뛰어가야 했습니다. 선임은 양동이에 스나프(대걸레)를 쑤셔 넣고, 휘휘 돌려 들어 올렸고 저는 혼신의 힘을 다해 물기를 제거했습니다. 양손을 이용해 한 번, 검지 중지를 이용해 여러 번. 바로 위 고참이 다시 한 번 스나프를 짰고, 거기서 물이 한 방울이라도 떨어지는 경우엔 가차 없는 응징이 이루어졌습니다. 아귀힘이 약했던 저는 손바닥이 몇 번이나 벗겨진 후에야 이 기술을 마스터 할 수 있었습니다. 큰 배는 한 달에 한 번씩 후임이 들어오고 그래서 빨리 선임이 될 수 있다고 들었지만, 겨울 기수였던 탓인지 두 달이 지나도 후임은 오지 않았습니다. 그날도 저는 양동이를 들고 서 있었습니다. 해가 저물어가며 멀리 월미도 공원에 하나 둘 불이 들어오기 시작했습니다. 그 불빛이 어찌나 찬란하던지요. 멍하니 바라보던 제 마음 속에 하나의 문장이 선명하게 떠올랐습니다. 내려야 한다. 때마침 함내 웅변대회가 열린다는 공지가 돌았습니다. 3등까지는 외박 및 외출 포상이 있다고 하더군요. 어차피 막내인 제가 나가야 할 터였습니다. 하지만 하필, 왜, 웅변이란 말입니까. 사람들 앞에 서는 걸 병적으로 싫어하던 저에겐 정말 최악의 선택지였습니다. 초등학교 4학년 때 독후감으로 상을 받은 적이 있었습니다. 선생님이 앞에 나와 그 독후감을 읽어보라고 했지만 끝까지 버티다가 결국 뺨을 두드려 맞고 교실 밖으로 쫓겨났었죠. 그 정도로 앞에 나서는 걸 싫어하던 저에게 웅변이라니요. 하지만 방법이 없었습니다. 짬을 내 원고를 쓰고 연습을 하기 시작했습니다. 크게 소리 낼 수 있는 상황이 아니었기에 작은 목소리로, 머릿속으로는 피를 토하는 열변으로 심상화하며 결전의 그날을 대비했습니다. 모두 아실겁니다. 지금도 웅변대회를 하는진 모르겠지만 당시의 웅변이란 건, ~ 라고 이 연사 강력히!(왼손 주먹) 강력히!(오른손 주먹) 주장합니다! (양손 들고). 이런 식이었습니다. 아... 내가 이런 걸... 대회 당일. 병사들이 하나 둘 함내 식당으로 모여들었습니다. 인원수가 가장 많았던 갑판부의 막내였던 제가 1번으로 발표를 하게 됐죠. 심호흡을 하며 병사들 앞에 섰습니다. 승조원 중 가장 깨끗한 셈브레이 당가리를 빼입은 자판병이 저를 안쓰러운 눈으로 바라보더군요. (자판병 - 함내 하나 뿐인 커피 자판기를 담당하는 수병. 커피와 물 채워 넣기, 동전 바꿔주기가 전부인 그야말로 땡보직. 하지만 함내에서 가장 어두운 얼굴을 하고 있다) 그래. 어차피 이 시간이 지나면 아무도 기억하지 않을 거다. 군대 일이 다 그렇지 뭐. 저는 머릿속으로 원고를 떠올리며 천천히 입을 열었습니다. 순간 저도 놀랄 만큼의 사자후가 터져 나오기 시작했습니다. 그때의 저는 뭐랄까요. 순수한 반공 청년 그 자체였습니다. 오직 괴뢰군을 박살내고 조국통일을 위해 어떤 일이라도 할 각오가 되어 있는 참된 군인의 화신 말입니다. 무슨 말을 했는지 어떤 동작을 취했는지 기억이 나질 않습니다. 하지만 모든 것을 끝마쳤을 때 병사들의 눈빛만은 기억나네요. 제 성격을 알고 있던 그들의 놀란 두 눈. 찬탄과 함께 벌어진 입. 그리고 쏟아지는 박수. 필승! 경례를 붙이고 자리에 앉았습니다. 그 후에야 모든 걸 무사히 마쳤다는 안도감과 함께 제 자신을 넘었다는 뜨거운 성취감이 몰려왔습니다. 이대로라면 최소한 3등 안에는 들 거라는 확신이 들었습니다. 자판병이 커피 한 잔을 뽑아주며 엄지를 치켜세우더군요. 하지만 다음 참가자의 웅변이 시작되면서 저의 모든 성취감과 확신은 서서히 사라져갔습니다. 그는 마치 박진영 심사위원의 충고를 들은 것처럼 말하듯이 발표를 하는 거였습니다... 다음 참가자도, 그 다음 참가자도, 마지막 참가자까지. 저건 웅변이 아니야... 저건 웅변이 아니야... 그렇게 대회는 끝났고, 저는 4등을 했습니다.
