 《우리는 차별에 찬성합니다》 오찬호 지음 / 개마고원 “날로 정규직 되려고 하면 안 되잖아요!” ‘KTX 여승무원 정규직 전환 문제’를 놓고 한 대학생은 이렇게 외쳤다. 처음부터 비정규직이라고 알았고, 어려운 시험 쳐서 들어가지도 않았으면서 언감생심 정규직을 넘보느냐는 준엄한 일침이었다. 저자는 이에 대해 엄청난 충격을 받았다고 고백한다. ‘피 끓는 시절의 대학생이라면’, ‘진보 코스프레’라도 하려는 시기가 아니냐는 말과 함께 그 당위성을 설파한다. 또 ‘현재 이십 대가 처한 상황이나 KTX 여승무원들의 처지나 피차 마찬가지’이지 않느냐며 자신의 안락한 미래를 위해 파업에 대해 ‘동병상련’의 입장에 서야 하지 않느냐는 주장을 내세운다. 이렇게 1장에서 생긴 문제의식, ‘왜 20대는 괴물이 되었는가?’에 대한 이유 분석이 책의 나머지 장을 채운다. 자기계발서의 함정에 빠져 ‘스펙 쌓기’로 대변되는 무의미하기 짝이 없는 짓에 놀아나고, 수능점수를 신성시하다 ‘대학서열에 대한 무모한 집착’에 빠지게 됐다는 주장이 뒤를 잇는다. 이런 논리는 일부 타당하지만 다양한 각도에서 비판을 면할 길이 없어 보인다. 자기계발서의 함정, 즉 개인의 실패는 노력 부족이 근본적인 원인이라는 ‘헛된 믿음’이 주류가 된 가운데 이에 저항하는 목소리는 왜 미미하냐고 저자는 묻는다. 정규직과 비정규직의 비율은 이미 사회적으로 고정되다시피 했고 가까운 미래에 바뀌기도 요원한데 아무리 애쓴들 어차피 정규직에 입성하지 못할 -일부 의자뺏기 게임의 성공자 이외에는- 모두 들고 일어나야 하지 않을지 궁금할 수도 있다. 하지만 『88만원 세대』에서도 지적되었다시피 이는 간단한 게임 이론 –그중에서도 죄수 이론- 으로 설명가능하다. 즉, 현재의 이십대 모두가 들고 일어서는 것이 최선이지만 일부라도 배신하는 순간 그들에게만 이익이 돌아가므로 다들 최선이 아님을 알면서도 최악을 피하기 위해 차악을 택하게 된다는 말이다. 수능점수로 대표되는 ‘학력위계주의’에 대한 맹신이 유독 이십대에서 지나치다는 3장의 논지에도 의문이 든다. 이런 주장이 가능하려면 이전까지는 학력위계주의가 없었거나 적어도 덜했어야 한다는 전제조건이 필요한데, 한국전쟁 이후 그런 현상이 한번이라도 목도된 적이 있었는지 반문해 보면 자연스레 모순이 드러난다. 우리나라는 아직 ‘서울대 신드롬’이라 불리는 학벌주의에서 제대로 벗어나 본 적이 없으며 이전 세대에서 그런 경향이 더 강하면 강했지 약하지는 않았다는 측면을 고려해 보면, 대학 진학률이 높아진 만큼 대학 사이의 경쟁 밀도가 심해진 것을 가지고 이십대가 ‘학력위계주의’에 빠졌다는 고발은 원인과 결과를 착각한 게 아닌지 의문이 생긴다. 그렇다면 경쟁 심화 현상은 왜 유발되었을까? 『절망의 나라의 행복한 젊은이들』은 제한되게나마 이에 대한 답변을 제시한다. 일본의 젊은이들은 ‘오늘보다 내일이 더 나아질 리 없기’ 때문에 현재 행복한 것이라고 한다. 이를 뒤집어 보면 한국의 젊은이들은 ‘내일이 더 나아질 수 있다는 희망’이 있어 불행하다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 지금은 불행하지만 미래에 대한 기대가 있기 때문에 한국의 젊은이들은 노력을 멈추지 않으며 다 같이 아프리카의 ‘스프링폭스’가 되어 절벽으로 달려간다. 일본의 사회 문제가 한국에서 10년 후 되풀이된다는 속설을 믿는다면 ‘일본의 아이들은 왜 필요한지 알려주지 않으면 히라가나조차 배우려 들지 않는다’고 탄식한 『하류지향』이 쓰인지 10년이 지난 2017년쯤에는 우리나라 젊은이들도 ‘노력과 성과가 일치하지 않는다’는 부조리에 다들 눈을 뜰 것이라 본다. 또 하나의 문제는 다양한 배경을 가진 이십대를 하나로 묶으려는 시도 자체다. 이는 담론 형성에는 유리한 측면이 있으나 스스로를 현실에서 괴리시키는 약점 또한 존재한다. 『절망의 나라의 행복한 젊은이들』에서도 ‘젊은이론은 젊은이의 이름을 빌려 쏟아 낸 사회 비판이 아니었을까?’ 라는 말을 통해 이를 통렬하게 지적하는데, 고민해 볼 지점이다. 세대론을 설파하는 책이 으레 그렇듯 이 책 또한 결론내기에서는 한 발짝 물러나는 스탠스를 취하는 점도 아쉽다. ‘사실 어떤 현상에서 나타나는 문제점을 논할 때 “그래서 대안이 뭔데?”라고 묻는 건 문제제기 자체를 봉쇄하는 효과가 있다는 점이다’ p194 저자는 직접적으로 이런 논지를 펴며 해결책 제시는 회피한 채 과열된 자기계발과 희망 없는 희망론에 대한 경계를 주문한다. 물론 이런 복잡한 사회문제를 한 학자가 분석만 잘하면 되지 정치인의 역할인 해결책 제시까지 하라는 것은 ‘물에 빠진 놈 건져 놓으니까 내 봇짐 내라 한다’는 막무가내로 들릴지도 모른다. 하지만 틀릴지언정 『88만원 세대』의 저자 우석훈 씨처럼 ‘기성세대가 양보하라’, ‘20대에 창업하라’는 식으로 무언가 내놓기는 해야 독자들도 속 시원히 마지막 장을 덮을 수 있지 않을까.
