신경숙의 표절 논란에 미시마 유키오만 있는 게 아니라 마루야마 겐지도 있더군요. 마루야마 겐지라면 저도 한 권 갖고 있어서 오랜만에 꺼내봐서 다시 읽었습니다. 예전에 읽었을 때와는 미묘하게 느낌이 다르더군요. 처음 읽었을 때는 시와 같이 끊임없이 이어지는 흐름에 빨려서 정신 못 차리고 탐닉했었는데 지금은 그래도 호흡은 고를 수 있더라고요. 각설하고 인상적인 구절 몇 개만 적어볼까 합니다. 아래 문장들은 한성례가 번역하고 이룸에서 출판한 '달에 울다'에서 가져왔습니다. [야에코 위로 폭염이 소용돌이 치고 있다. 그 위에는 타서 눌은 하늘이 있고, 조금 더 위에는 타다 문드러진 태양이 눌어붙어 있다. 이 산 저 산에서 요란한 뻐꾸기 울음소리가 들리고, 폭풍우 같은 매미 소리는 나를 옴짝달싹 못하게 한다. 괴성을 지르던 야에코가 벌채된 나무처럼 무너지며 내 위를 덮쳤다.] '달에 울다'의 히로인 야에코의 매력을 직접적으로 드러내는 문장은 따로 있다고 봅니다만 그건 너무 에로틱해서 생략. 이것도 제법 야한 문장 아닌가 싶습니다만 그래도 외설적이라는 느낌은 안 드니까요. 처음 읽을 때는 전원적인 배경을 두고 저렇게 난폭한 문장이 나올 수 있다는 게 꽤 충격이었죠. 덧붙여 그야말로 '치명적인' 유혹이구나 라는 생각도 같이요. [병풍 속에서 거친 바람이 불어치고 있다. 그 바람은 때로는 아기 울음소리 같다. 이제 어떻게 할 거야, 나는 병풍에 대고 물어본다. 그러나 야에코는 대답하지 않고, 굽이치는 초원을 가르면서 어둠의 소용돌이를 향해 나아가고 있다. 그녀가 등에 지고 있는 것은 비파가 아니고 통통하게 살진 젖먹이다. 그 아이의 아버지는 어쩌면 야에코 자신도 알지 못할지도 모른다.] 평범한 문장 가운데 애잔함이 묻어나오더군요. 야에코를 '나쁜년'이나 '이상한년'이 아니라 그 역시 한 명의 사람이라는 것을 나타내주는 글이라고나 할까요. 식견이 짧아서 표현하기가 어렵네요. 저는 저 젖먹이라는 표현을 좋아합니다. 제가 어렸을 적에 많은 이들 등에 업히던 젖먹이라 그랬는지도 모릅니다. [가마우지들은 내가 가까이 다가가도 달아나지 않았다. 손이 닿을 만큼 가까이 다가가서 뚫어지게 쳐다봐도 날개를 넓게 펼친 채 꼼짝도 하지 않았다. 낫 같은 것이 있으면 좋을 텐데, 하고 생각했다. 뱀을 연상시키는 가마우지의 기다란 목을 탁 내리칠 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까. 아무리 찾아봐도 내 이름은 찾을 수 없었다. 꼼꼼히 찾아보았지만, 어디에도 없었다.] 이건 '조롱을 높이 매달고'에 나오는 구절입니다. 불쾌감, 분노, 공허함, 외로움, 두려움 등 굉장히 다양한 감정이 느껴지는 부분이라 좋더군요. 쉽게 공감이 가는 편이었고요. 피리새도 피리새지만 가마우지야말로 이 소설을 완성시키는데 있어 빼놓을 수 없는 요소였겠죠. 생각해보니 '물의 가족'을 읽는다 읽는다 해놓고 계속 까먹고 있네요. 조만간 서점 한 번 들려야겠어요. 글 잘 봤습니다.
마루야마 겐지의 소설을 보면 문장을 훔치고 싶다라는 생각이 절로 들긴 할 것 같아요.
소개해주신 책을 읽어보지 못했지만 물의 가족은 읽은 기억이 있는데, 문장에서 정말
이미지가 느껴져서 놀랐던 기억이 있어요.
그에반해 최근에 나온 인생따위 엿이나 먹어라라는 수필집은 기대이하였어요.
좋은 소설가가 좋은 수필을 쓰리라는 보장이 없긴하지만
소설가의 각오라는 수필집이 훌륭하다는 소문을 들은터라 기대를 가지고 봤었는데
소설에서 받은 감흥이 강렬한 탓이었는지 제 개인적인 기대치에 못 미쳤던것 같아요.

마루야마 겐지의 소설을 보면 문장을 훔치고 싶다라는 생각이 절로 들긴 할 것 같아요.
소개해주신 책을 읽어보지 못했지만 물의 가족은 읽은 기억이 있는데, 문장에서 정말
