크리틱M이라는 곳에 선우훈 작가가 비평가로서 올리는 글들이 있다고 해서 읽어보게 되었다. 글을 쓰는 7월 28일 기준으로 총 다섯 편의 글이 올라와 있는데, 공모전 수상작이라는 윤태호 비평을 시작으로 해서 <뷰티풀 군바리>와 <게임회사 여직원들> 등에 대한 글이 게시되어 있었다. 이 중 대중적 인지도가 있는 글은 아마 <뷰군>에 관한 것이 아닐까 싶다. 그러나 안타깝게도 나는 상기 작품들을 읽어본 적이 없고, 윤태호의 만화 역시 <이끼>와 <미생>을 읽었을 뿐 비평의 소재가 된 나머지 두 작품을 접할 기회는 없었다. 그런 탓에 내가 읽을 수 있는 글은 하나로 그 범위가 좁혀질 수 밖에 없었다. 선우훈 작가 본인의 작품인 <데미지 오버 타임>에서 자신이 택한 도트식 작업 방식과, 김정기 석정현의 작화 방식을 비교평한 글 ㅡ <나의 작화 이야기 Ⅰ─ 김정기, 석정현이 그림을 잘그린다고?>(15년 9월 22일, http://criticm.com/?p=5255)가 그것이다. 따라서 나는 이후 이 글에서 선우훈 비평가가 주장하거나 설명하는 바를 다시 한번 곱씹어 쓸 것이다. * 들어가기에 앞서, 기본적으로 나는 웹툰보다는 출판 만화를 서브컬쳐 향유의 메인으로 삼고 있다. 지금 타자를 치고 있는 앞에는 <기동전사건담 썬더볼트> 4권과, <베르세르크> 30권, <월드엠브리오> 13권이 널부러져 있고, 고개를 약간 돌리면 옆의 책장에는 <헬싱>과 <크로마티 고교>, <바람계곡의 나우시카> 등이 줄줄히 꽂혀 있다. 대강 훑어보기로 크리틱M은 딱히 웹툰 뿐이 아닌, 만화 전반을 다루고 평하는 사이트로 보인다. 또한 선우훈 비평가의 상기 기고문 역시 그 범위가 웹툰으로 한정되어 있는 것으로 보이지는 않는다. 따라서 이후의 이야기는 웹툰으로 그 범위가 한정되지 않은 채 진행될 것이다. 본격적인 이야기 이전에 우선은 선우훈 비평가의 글을 조금 정리해 놓고 들어갈 필요성을 느낀다. 글이 전체적으로 거꾸로 서 있는 느낌이 있는 탓이다. 필자가 읽기에 선우훈 비평가의 상기 기고문은 대강 이렇게 정리될 수 있을 듯 하다. 0. 도입 : 자신의 작품인 <데미지 오버 타임> 등의 특수한 방법론을 택한 작품들이 종종 있다. 1. 자신의 도트 작업 이유 : 노동력을 최소로 하면서 다른 요소들에 대해 고민할 시간을 확보하였다. 2. 만화 작업 방식 : 만화가는 만화를 이루는 각 부분(서사, 그림, 연출 등)에 대해 조율하는 감독 역할을 맡게 되고, 각 요소에 대해 어느 정도의 투자할 것인지 결정해야 한다. 이 분배가 잘 이루어졌을 때 뛰어난 작품이 만들어질 수 있다. 3. 최근 만화계 : 크리틱M은 대중이 서사와 스토리텔링에만 집중한다고 하나, 내가 볼 때에는 수준급 작화를 기본으로 밑바탕에 깔고 있을 것이 여전히 요구되고 있다. 3-1. 예외 : 다만 생활툰 등에서 작품과 작가를 동시에 소비하는 경우가 늘었고, 이 때에는 예외적으로 작화 요구 수준이 하향 조정될 수 있다. 4. 석정현과 김정기 : 석정현과 김정기로 대표되는 '잘 그린 그림'은 기술적 면모에 집중한 것으로서 일종의 차력과 같다. 대중은 이런 그림을 잘 그렸다고 평가하지만, 이러한 기술을 뛰어난 만화 작품으로 완성시키는 것은 별개의 문제다. 5. 결. 개인적으로는 1번 항목을 4번 항목과 병치시켜 이야기를 진행했을 때 훨씬 읽기 편한 글이 될 수 있었을 것이라 본다. 자신의 작법에 대한 칭찬으로 시작해 남의 작법에 대한 비판으로 끝나는 것은 독자의 반감을 일으키기 쉬울 뿐더러, 자기애가 강한 경우 도입부에 지나치게 힘을 주고 분량을 투자하여 글 전체의 흐름을 망가뜨리기 쉬운 탓이다. 애초에 이런 실수를 범하지 않기 위해서는 창작자로서의 자신과 비평가로서의 자신을 구분하는 것이 가장 수월한 방편이다. 자신의 안에서 이러한 구분이 명확하게 이루어 지지 않을 때, 이인화가 했던 것과 같이 자신의 작품을 가명으로 비평하는 것 같은 우스운 꼴이 연출되고 만다. <나의 작화 이야기>라는 동일한 제목으로 손지상 작가가 시리즈 연재를 이어나간 것으로 보아, 이 글은 크리틱M이 전개한 시리즈 연재물 중 일부로 보인다. 두 입장 중 하나를 명확히 정해 글을 썼어야 했다는 것은, 만화계 작화법의 변천을 통해 이야기를 풀어나간 손지상 작가의 글(http://criticm.com/?p=5265)을 통해 더욱 명백해진다. 위와 같은 이유로 인해 이와 같은 순서대로 당해 비평에 대한 본 감상을 전개하게 될 경우 마찬가지의 오류에 빠지게 될 위험성이 보인다. 따라서 이후로는 1번 항목의 내용을 4번 항목과 병치시킨 상황으로 간주해 순서대로 이야기해보고자 한다. 0. 도입, 2. 만화 작업 방식 이 부분은 사실 주관적인 분석인 탓에 다른 견해를 덧붙일 구석이 딱히 존재하지 않는다. 만화가 그림과 대사, 서사, 화면 연출 등으로 이루어져 있는 복합 예술임에는 딱히 부정할 이유가 없을 뿐더러, 만화가(와 몇 명의 어시)가 한정된 자원과 시간을 바탕으로 작업을 진행하는 이상 어떤 부분에 힘을 쏟아야 할 지 결정해야 하는 건 너무나 당연한 이야기인 탓이다. 하다못해 우리는 저녁 밥상을 차릴 때에도 식사 시간까지의 남은 시간을 안배하고, 가스레인지 화구 숫자를 생각해 작업 순서를 결정해야 한다. 여기서 이야기할 수 있는 것은 사실 위에서 언급한 것과 마찬가지의 부분 ㅡ 창작자로서의 자신과 비평가로서의 자신을 구분했으면 하는 점 정도일 것이다. 이 글 전체에서 가장 쓸모 없는 문단을 고르라면 필자는 주저없이 '나는 한두 명이 만화의 모든 것을 창작하는 체제란,'으로 시작하는 문단을 꼽을 것이다. 3. 최근의 만화계 동향. 본격적으로 이야기를 시작할 부분은 아마 여기부터가 아닐까 싶다. 선우훈 비평가는 우선 크리틱M이라는 매체가 기본적으로 견지하는 '대중의 서사에의 천착'을 부정하고, 이후 기본적인 작화 수준이 이미 허들로 작동하고 있다고 이야기한다. 다만 생활툰 등 작가ㅡ작품간 유기성이 극도로 증대된 경우가 예외적으로 작화 수준에 있어서 상당한 자유도를 가지게 되는데, 이 예외적 장르가 웹툰을 주류를 형성하고 있다 보니 크리틱M이 가지고 있는 것과 같은 착각을 낳게 했다는 주장이다. 문제는 이 주장에 대해 선우훈 비평가가 어떠한 근거나 실증적 자료를 제시하고 있지 않다는 점이다. 이는 상기한 손지상 작가의 글이 가능한 한 실제적인 사례를 예시하고, 글 안에서 소화하기 어려운 수준의 이야기들은 레퍼런스 처리한 것과 상반된다. 웹툰이 작화에서 일차적인 허들을 넘은 자들에게 허락되는 창작 영역이고, 생활툰 '등' 기존 출판만화와는 다른 문화 문법이 적용되는 예외가 많다는 것은 근거가 뒷받침 되지 않은 주장에 불과하다. 강풀을 필두로 하여 기본적인 작화에 문제가 있다는 지적을 받는 작가는 웹툰계에서 적지 않았고, 이는 해츨링의 <동네 변호사 조들호> 등의 작품에서도 여전히 발견되는 사안이다. 이러한 작품들이 웹툰 시장에서 마이너한 인지도에 머물러 있다면 모르겠으나, 선우훈 비평가가 제시한 예외적 카테고리에 들어가지 않으면서도 '기본적인 작화'가 부족한 작품들은 도처에서 발견된다. 웹툰을 향유하는 계층이 서사에 천착한다는 크리틱M의 평가는 아마 이런 사실을 근거로 한 것일 터이다. 이러한 주장을 입증하기 위해서, 비평자는 최소한 조회수 같은 수치라도 기반으로 하여 구분한 주류 작품들이 자신이 주장한 바와 같은 일정 수준의 작화를 확보하고 있음을 보여야 했다. 그러한 증명이 없는 주장은 단순한 인상 비평에 불과하다.  이 주장에 따르는 다른 문제는, 기존 출판만화의 문법이 적용되지 않은 '예외'의 범위를 지나치게 넓게 잡았다는 데에 있다. 선우훈 비평가는 이러한 예외로서 생활툰, 감성툰, 병맛, 개그만화, 치유물 등을 들면서, 해당 장르에서 작가는 작품의 창작자로서의 위치를 뛰어넘어 작품과 동시에 소비되는 일종의 준 연예인적 성격을 띤다고 주장한다. 생활툰의 경우에는 웹툰이 새로이 개척한 영역이라 할 것이고, 생활툰에서의 화자는 작가와 동일시 되는 경우가 많아 이와 같은 논리가 힘을 얻을 수 있는 측면이 존재한다. 그러나 비평가가 제시한 다른 장르들, 특히 개그만화와 치유물 등은 딱히 웹툰계가 가지고 있는 전유물적 장르로 구분하기도 어려울 뿐더러 이러한 작품들에서 장르적 특성으로 인해 작가와 작품이 동시에 소비된다고 볼 논리적 타당성 입증이 부족하다. 이는 글이 생활툰과 개그만화 등 기타 장르를 명확히 정의하지 않는 데에서 시작하는 허술함이다. 차라리 이러한 현상은 비평가가 앞서 주장한 것과 같이 SNS 등을 통한 실체적 피드백의 가능성에 연관이 있다고 보는 것이 직관적이고, 이러한 논리를 따를 경우 장르의 구분은 생활툰 이외에서 거의 무의미해진다. 4. 석정현과 김정기, 1. 선우훈 자신의 작업방식.  이 파트의 시작과 동시에 선우훈 '비평가'는 여기에서 다시 선우훈 '작가'의 입장으로 화자를 변경한다. 이는 앞서 계속 이야기한 비판 지점이기도 한데, 이렇게 스탠스를 변경한 선우훈 작가는 '방사' 시절 자신이 놀라워했던 김정기와 석정현의 그림을 이야기한다. 그리고 김정기 등이 구사하는 이른바 '입시체' 내지 석정현의 '실사체'에 대한 반감을 날것 그대로 뿜어내면서, 이와 같은 작화 기술은 차력에 불과할 뿐 만화의 완성도와는 그 상관관계가 옅다고 주장한다. 까놓고 말해서, 이 부분에서 나는 선우훈 '작가'의 둘에 대한 열등감과 상대적 우월감을 동시에 느낄 수 있었다. 선우훈 '비평가'는, 뛰어난 작화 실력을 가지고 있음에도 훌륭한 만화 작품을 만들어내는 데에는 성공하지 못한 이들을 예시로 들어 작화가 곧 만화의 완성도로 이어지는 것은 아님을 강변한다. 이와 같은 방식의 논증을 들어 흔히 성급한 일반화의 오류 내지 본말전도의 오류를 저지르고 있다 한다. 비평가가 제시하는 주장은 대강 두 가지 정도로 해석될 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 근거 : 김정기와 석정현은 뛰어난 작화에도 불구하고 성공적인 작품이 딱히 없다. 1) 작화가 뛰어나다고 해서 만화 작품의 완성도가 올라가는 것은 아니다. 2) 뛰어난 작화 실력만을 갈고 닦는 것은 만화 작품의 완성도에 오히려 방해가 될 수도 있다. 이에 대해 이야기하자면, 1) 뛰어난 작화가 작품의 완성도를 당연히 보장하는 것은 아니나, 훌륭한 작화는 당연히 작품의 완성도를 끌어올릴 수 있는 재료가 되어준다. 여기서 말하는 훌륭한 작화는 최대한 사실에 가까운 것을 이야기하는 것이 아니라, 구사하는 작화가 그 작품이 이야기하고자 하는 바에 얼마나 적합한가 하는 것이다. 히라노 코우타의 작풍은 인체비례가 엉망인 경우도 잦고, 인물의 표정 역시 한정적이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 히라노는 자신의 작품에 알맞는 방식으로 그 작화를 고정시켰고, 이로 인한 시너지로써 작품의 완성도를 끌어올리고 있다. 국내에서의 형민우 역시 비슷한 사례로 이야기 될 수 있을 것이다. 이 상황 자체는 선우훈 '작가'가 자신의 작품에 맞는 방식을 택했다고 주장하는 것과 일치한다. 그러나 훌륭한 작화 능력을 가진 이들이 그렇지 못한 이들보다 넓은 선택지를 가진다는 것은 슬프게도 명백한 사실일 터이다. 우리는 자신의 작화 능력 부족을 이유로 스토리와 작화를 분업하는 수 많은 사례를 이미 알고 있다. 2) 이는 이후 이야기할 선우훈 작가 자신의 작업 방식을 정당화하고자 하는 변명으로 밖에 보이지 않는다. 또한 선우훈 비평가가 김정기와 석정현을 굳이 선택해 이야기한 것을 비겁하다고 이야기하고 싶은 부분이기도 하다. 당장 기고문에 첨부된 석정현의 그림 하단에는 '최규석'의 이름이 같이 박혀 있다. 최규석은 석정현, 변기현 등과 같이 당시 삼단변신의 멤버로 활동하였고, 나머지 두 명이 대중적인 성공을 거두지 못하는 와중에 <100도씨>와 <송곳> 등의 작품을 통해 인지도를 확고히 했다. 그렇다면 최규석은 과연 석정현처럼 작화 실력 향상에 매진하지 않아서 이와 같은 서사적 성공을 거둘 수 있게 된 것인가. 혹은 이와 구분되는 작법을 통해 작업시간을 보다 스토리 구상 등에 사용할 수 있도록 조정한 것인가. 이건 그냥 웹툰이 가지고 있는 시간적 한계의 특이성을 무분별하게 확장하여 적용한 것에 지나지 않는다. 이와 같은 예시로 들 작가는 수도 없이 많다. 모리 카오루, 미우라 켄타로, 미야자키 하야오, 시로 마사무네... 비교하고자 한다면 저들이 가지고 있는 시간적 물질적 여유와 웹툰 작가들이 처해있는 현실적 한계를 비교해 이야기하는 편이 차라리 솔직하다. 예산과 인력의 부족, 그에 비해 과다하게 요구되는 분량과 컬러 작업 등을 비교하는 것이 차라리 옳다. 제대로 성립하지도 않는 논리를 증명하겠다며 다른 작가들을 모욕하는 것은 얼마나 저열한 일인가.  선우훈 '작가'는 자신이 <데미지 오버 타임>에서 택한 작법이 '복붙'을 통한 작업의 편의성을 도모하고, 그로서 작품의 서사 등에 더욱 집중할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고자 함이었다고 이야기한다. 즉, 1) 작화에 들이는 시간을 줄여 서사의 완성도를 높이고, 2) 작품 특성에 맞는 작화 방식이기도 했다는 것이다. 해당 작품의 연재 당시 감상해 나갔던 경험에 토대해서 이야기하건대, 안타깝게도 그 작품에 도트 방식 작업을 수행한 것은 기껏해야 절반의 성공에 지나지 않았던 것으로 보인다. 작가는 도트 작업을 통한 쿼터뷰 방식의 전개가 군대라는 소재와 맞물려 일종의 시너지를 낼 수 있을거라 기대했었던 것으로 보이나, 대부분의 인물이 동일한 복장을 착용하고 있는 작품 내 상황에서 이는 등장인물의 파악을 어렵게 했을 뿐이다. 작가는 손수 찍은 도트를 기반으로 하여 각 인물들의 특징적인 부분을 캐치해내며 읽어 내려갔을지 모르나, 대부분의 독자에게 각 인물들은 동일한 모습을 하고 있는 인형에 지나지 않았고 이로 인해 작품 내의 비교적 복잡한 인간관계는 매우 전달되기 어려운 상황에 놓이게 되었다. 이런 상황에서 서사의 전달은 난항에 처했지만, 그에 비례하는 숫자의 비판이 접수되지 않았던 건 그저 <데미지 오버 타임>이 기존 작품들의 클리셰를 충실히 따라가는 장르물이었던 덕이 크다. 좀비 아포칼립스라는 근래 가장 흔한 소재에 더해, 독자의 절반 가량이 이미 익숙해 있는 군대를 배경으로 하며, 여기에 <파리대왕>부터 유서가 깊은 고립물을 더한 탓에 이야기는 예상 가능한 선에서 흘러 갔고, 그 안에서 인물 간의 세부적인 갈등관계가 아무래도 좋았던 것이다. 빠른 작업 속도를 기반으로 하여 단시일 내에 작품을 완결지은 기쁨에 대해 타인이 왈가왈부할 것은 아니겠으나, 이를 자신의 작법이 작품에 적합하였던 탓으로 돌리는 것은 어불성설에 가깝다. 나아가, 이와 같은 '성공적 연재'를 기반으로 하여 '선택적으로' 다른 작가들의 작법을 무시하는 것은 아무리 좋게 봐주어야 무뢰한의 범주를 벗어나기 어려울 것이다. 5. 제언.  앞서 몇번이나 언급했듯이 이 글 안에서 선우훈이라는 인물은 '작가'와 '비평가'의 위치를 몇번이나 혼동하고 그 스탠스를 변화시키고 있다. 이러한 스탠스의 전환은 읽는 이로 하여금 글을 따라갈 수 없게 만들고, 글의 신뢰도를 현격히 저하시키는 영향 요인으로 작동한다. 이를 명확히 하고 기고에 임하는 것이 차후 선우훈 평론가가 커리어를 쌓아나갈 수 있을지에 있어 기본적인 전제 조건이 될 것으로 보인다. 더불어 글을 쓰기 이전에 전체 글의 구조를 다시 한번 검토하고, 그 구조가 자신이 하고 싶은 이야기에 적합한 것인지를 고민하는 습관 역시 필요할 것이다. 잘못된 틀은 글 전체의 완결성과 완성도를 휘저어 놓고, 이는 다시금 메세지 전달의 실패로 이어지기 마련이다. 안타깝게도 비평문과 같은 글쟁이의 영역이란, 폰트의 배색을 잘 구사하는 것으로 독자를 끌어모을 수 있는 영역이 아니지 않은가. 대중에게 글이 제대로 읽히지 않는다면 그건 글쓴이 자신의 문제이지 읽는 이들의 지능을 탓할 일은 아닐 것이다.
