 [음반사 전체의 상징이 된 강아지 니퍼. 죽은 주인의 목소리가 흘러나오는 축음기에 귀를 기울이고 있는 니퍼의 귀엽고도 애처로운 모습은 음반사 전체의 로고이기도 하지요.] 에디슨의 축음기 발명이후, 1931년 RCA Victor사가 가정용 33과 1/3rpm 플레이어를 시장에 내놓게 됩니다. 이 10인치 디스크의 용량은 당시 레오폴드 스토코프스키가 지휘하고, 필라델피아 교향악단이 연주하는 [베토벤 교향곡 제5번]이 양면에 모두 들어갈 수 있도록 설계된 것은 잘 알려진 일화지요. 레코딩의 발명은 클래식 음악의 역사에서 매우 중요한 전환점입니다. 스튜디오에서의 녹음이 대중들 앞에서 연주할 때와는 다른 기질을 요구한다는 것을 연주자들이 깨닫는 데는 많은 시간이 걸리지 않았죠. 무대 위에서라면 청중들이 피아니스트의 조그만 실수를 알아차릴 가능성은 거의 없습니다. 우리는 [노다메 칸타빌레]의 치아키가 아닌 것이죠.  [Arthur Rubinstein은 2살부터 절대음감이었다고 하네요.] 하지만 레코딩이라면 이야기는 달라집니다. 작은 실수를 청자가 알아챌 수 있는 기회는 무한히 열려있습니다. 쇼팽의 피아노 협주곡은 제가 자주 듣는 레퍼토리에 속하지는 않지만 아르투르 루빈슈타인의 1961년 카네기홀 실황녹음이라면 이야기가 많이 다릅니다. 벌써 50년이 훌쩍 넘어버린 이 오래된 레코딩은 피아노의 영롱한 음색이 오케스트라의 파도에 묻히지 않으면서도, 그렇다고 파괴적인 예술혼(?)을 불사르겠다는 듯 피아니스트 홀로 독주하지도 않습니다. 피아노 협주곡이나 바이올린 협주곡을 들어보면 독주 악기인 피아노나 바이올린과 협주를 하는 오케스트라의 음색이 서로 대결하거나, 조응하는 부분이 나타납니다. 이 때 독주가 너무 앞서가서 오케스트라가 겨우겨우 따라오는 경우도 있고, 오케스트레이션이 너무 묵직해서 독주를 압살하는 경우도 있습니다. 루빈슈타인의 연주가 이런 부조화에서 자유롭다고 해서 수많은 다른 레코딩에 비해 월등히 뛰어나다 말할 근거는 약합니다. 잘된 연주는 무수히 많으니까요. 그러나 분명 이 연주는 제 마음을 사로잡았지요. 루빈슈타인의 연주는 뭐랄까요. 쇼팽의 아름다움을 제대로 이해하고 살리는, 연약한 듯 하지만 부러지지 않는 느낌을 주지요. 2악장에서의 조그만 실수는 사실 루빈슈타인이 곡 전체에서 보여준 균형잡힌 해석에 아무런 영향을 주지 못합니다. 아주 우울했던 어느 날, 마음을 가볍게 하고 싶어 루빈슈타인의 연주를 들었습니다. 그만큼 이 곡이 제게 주는 청량감은 뛰어나지요. 템포가 매우 빠른 2악장의 완결부에서 저는 연주자의 작은 실수를 우연히 발견했는데, 버스 안에서 웃음을 터트렸습니다(미친*이 따로 있겠습니까...). 몇 번을 들었어도 알아채지 못할 만큼 작은 실수였지요. 실황연주에서는 어쩔 수 없는 부분이기도 하구요. 대가의 작은 실수가 제 마음을 더 진하게 위로해 주었고, 그 후로는 이 연주를 더욱 좋아하게 되었습니다. (비록 작은 실수가 있다고 해도) 이렇게 좋은 연주를 만나게 되면 다른 연주자의 연주를 듣는 것이 사실상 고역이 되기도 합니다. 자꾸 '이 부분은 이렇게 연주했어야지...'하는 생각을 떨쳐버릴 수 없지요. 바로 나만의 레퍼런스가 탄생하는 순간이죠. 하지만 청자에게 어떤 기준이 되는 레퍼런스에 대한 갑론을박은 매니아들 사이에서도 종점을 알 수 없는 이야기입니다. 새로운 해석이 탄생하기도 하고, 더 좋은 연주가 나올 가능성은 얼마든지 열려있으니까요. 예를 들어, 클래식 음악을 안듣는 사람이라도 바흐의 [골드베르크 변주곡]을 한번쯤 접해보지 않은 사람은 거의 없을테지요. 제 기억이 정확하다면, [시간을 달리는 소녀]라는 에니메이션 필름에도 이 곡이 삽입되어 있고, 키아누 리브스가 지구를 파멸시키러 사신으로 오는 영화 [지구가 멈추는 날]에도 이 곡은 삽입되어 있습니다(이 영화를 제가 왜 봤을까요...ㅠㅠ 재미있을 줄 알았습니다...)  [온갖 기행으로도 유명한 Glenn Gould. 사진으로 봐도 풍기는 미친* 포스] 바흐의 [골드베르크 변주곡]은 글렌 굴드가 콧소리를 섞어가며 녹음한 60년이 넘은 연주부터, 바흐 스페셜리스트로 이름이 알려진 안드라스 쉬프의 연주, 러시아 피아니스트 할매 타티아나 니콜라예바의 연주, 그리고 비교적 신예인 임동혁이 야심차게 내놓는 연주 등등 제가 들어본 연주만 해도 손에 다 꼽을 수가 없습니다. 각각 나름의 특색이 있고, 매력이 있지만, 가장 많이 듣게 되는 것은 글렌 굴드의 연주입니다. 엄격한 연주, 졸린 연주, 서정적인 해석을 한 연주 등등을 다 듣고 나서 다시 그에게로 돌아가게 되었습니다. 글렌 굴드는 저만의 레퍼런스가 된 셈이죠. 감히(!) 연주자가 자발적으로 잡음을 집어넣고, 제 멋대로인 템포를 해석하다니! 신성한 바흐를 이렇게 연주한다는 것이 누군가의 심사를 긁을 수도 있겠지요. 그러나 제게는 이 연주가 얼마나 경쾌하게 느껴지는지 모릅니다. 누군가를 잠자리에 들게 만들기 위해 만들어진 곡이라는 일화에도 불구하고 갑자기 에너지가 솟아나는 듯 합니다. 굴드의 자유로운 영혼이 스며있는 것 같고, 굴드가 이 곡을 연주하면서 얼마나 신이 났을지 절절히 느껴지지요. 그 흥이 저절로 제게 전염이 됩니다. 글렌 굴드는 연주회를 거부하고 레코딩만을 고집했던 연주자로도 아주 유명하죠. 또 다른 피아니스트인 아르투르 슈나벨은 레코딩이 연주자와 청자가 주고받는 교감을 제거한, 예술을 메마르고 비인간적인 것으로 만드는 것으로 여겨 레코딩을 완강히 거부하기도 했지요. 레코딩이라는 불변의 기록은 한번 한 실수가 영원히 각인되고, 자꾸 반복되어 들을수록 실수가 도드라져, 결국 연주자의 커리어에 오점으로 남는다는 점은 연주자들에게 공포감을 안기는 것이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그러나 실수의 두려움을 극복한다면, 음반은 완벽한 작품을 남길 수 있는 기회가 됩니다. 아마 굴드가 스튜디오에서의 녹음을 고집한 이유는 바로 완벽한 작품을 남기고 싶은 욕망때문이었겠지요. 레코딩이 얼마나 많은 연주자들에게 위협(?)으로 다가올 지 상상하는 것은 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 스비아토슬라프 리히터는 자신의 연주를 차안에서 태연하게 듣는 후배 연주자를 두고 "얼마나 속편한 인간인가..."라고 읇조리는 장면이 [리히터, 회고담과 음악수첩]이라는 책에 일화로 남아있기도 합니다. 여러 피아니스트를 무대에서 만났습니다. 백건우의 구도적인 베토벤 피아노소나타도 직접 들었고, 손열음의 당찬 쇼팽도 들었습니다. 제가 치아키가 아닌데, 만약 레코딩이 없다면 그들이 어떤 연주를 안기든 청자인 저는 수동적으로 받아들일 수 밖에 없는 처지에 놓이지요. 아마도 저는 바보같은 표정을 지으며 이렇게 생각하겠지요. '아... 잘 치는 것은 분명해. 그런데 어떻게 잘 치는 건지는 잘 모르겠어. 저번에 들었던 연주랑 비교를 해봐야 하는데 그렇다면 그 연주자는 언제 또 공연을 한단 말이지?' 이게 말이 됩니까? 반면, 제게는 그 잘난 [레퍼런스]가 있으므로 관계는 역전이 됩니다. 백건우를 들으며, '흠... 함머클라비어를 좀 더 힘차게 연주한다면 곡의 분위기가 더 살지 않을까?'하고 생각할 수 있고, 몇년전 교향악 축제에서 모대학의 교수가 연주한 차이콥스키 피아노 협주곡 1번이 얼마나 골때렸는지 신나게 까발릴 수도 있는 것이지요. 이건 분명 음악을 듣는 즐거움입니다. 연주자들이 받는 스트레스는 제 알 바가 아닙니다? 이렇게 하나의 레퍼토리를 끝냅니다. 게임에서 미션을 클리어하듯이 한 곡을 듣고 나면, 연주자가 되었든, 작곡가가 되었든 하나의 관심사에서 또 하나로 옮아가게 되지요. 글렌 굴드가 특히나 좋아했던 바흐의 다른 곡을 들어볼 수도 있고, 백건우의 연주가 마음에 들지 않아 슈나벨이나 박하우스의 연주를 들어볼 수도 있습니다. 리히터가 특히나 칭찬했던 바르톡을 들을 수도 있고, 정명훈이 무대에서 생각보다 카스리스마가 약해보여, 라디오프랑스 시절에 한 녹음들을 들추어 볼 수도 있습니다. 그러면서 다른 레퍼토리를 하나씩 추가하게 되는 것이지요. 지난 번 글(https://new.redtea.kr/pb/pb.php?id=free&no=199&page=4)에서 [편집음반으로는 감수성이 길러지지 않는다]라는 이야기를 했는데, 이번 글에서는 하나씩 레퍼토리를 늘려가는 방법에 대해 이야기를 한 셈입니다. 세트로 음반을 한 100개 정도 사놓고 듣는 것도 나쁘지는 않을테지만, 이런 식으로 레퍼토리를 하나하나 늘려가는 방법이 제가 사용한 방법이고, 혹시나 관심이 있는 분들께 권하는 방법이기도 합니다. 어떤 분야에 대한 소양이라는 것은 그리 빨리 길러지지 않습니다. 정보의 시대가 되어 누구라도 어떤 분야에 대해 한 마디씩 할 수 있다고는 하지만, 피상적인 정보만으로 얻을 수 없는 것들이 많죠. 아마도 음악을 듣는 행위는 논리 이전의 것이기 때문이 아닐까 생각해봅니다. 물 속에 들어가지 않고 책으로는 수영을 배울 수 없는 이치와 다를 것이 없겠지요. 지루한 글은 여기서 마치겠습니다. 가장 중요한 소식 한 가지... 드디어 사진을 올리는 방법을 알았습니다. 갑자기 컴퓨터를 너무 잘하게 된 듯한 느낌이 드네요. 크크크 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 0 이 게시판에 등록된 뤼야님의 최근 게시물

좋은 글 잘 읽었습니다. 최근에 부르디외를 다시 읽으려고 손에 잡았는데 마침 비슷한 이야기가 올라오니 흥미롭네요.

이런 감상능력을 가진 이들은 이를 자본화합니다. 문화자본이라고 불러봅시다. 감상능력을 갖추기 위해 일정한 투자가 선행되어야하고, 그렇게 투자한 결과물이 어떤 내면화된 평가기준으로서 자기 안에 남습니다. 그리고 이렇게해서 획득된 감상능력은 두고두고 써먹을 수 있지요. 그것을 발판삼아 능력을 더 심화할 수도 있고 어디가서 잘난척 할 수도 있고 이성을 꼬시는 데 써먹을 수도 있고 상류사회의 대화에 끼는데 도움이 되기도 합니다. 반면에 애초에 이런 선행투자가 없었던 이들은 이러한 카르텔로부터 소외됩니다. 한마디로, 상류층 입장에서 하층 계급으로부터 자신을 구별짖는데 써먹을 수 있다는 말입니다.
어쩌면 레코딩 이전의 클래식은 회화보다도 더 침투하기 어려운 놈이 아니었나 싶습니다. 회화야 뭐가 어찌됐든 화가가 일단 그려놓고 나면 어딘가에 걸려서 폭넓은 대중들에게 공개됩니다. 따라서 비록 쉽진 않을지라도 일반인 역시 어찌어찌 감상능력을 독학으로 키울 수 있을 겁니다. 하지만 레코딩이 없던 시절의 클래식이라면? 이야기가 달라지지요. 실연의 1회성이 엄청난 제약이 될 수 있습니다. 당장 오늘 빈에서 A의 독주회가 있고 내일 파리에서 B의 지휘 하에 C의 오페라가 열린다고 합시다. 이건 한 번 실연하고 나면 그냥 끝인지라 그걸 감상할 기회를 놓친 후발주자들은 죽었다 깨어나도 선행주자의 경험을 따라잡을 수 없을 겁니다.
이렇게 본다면 레코딩은 문자 그대로 클래식의 대중화에 결정적인 기여를 했다고 볼 수 있습니다. 그냥 클래식을 널리 알렸다 정도가 아니라, 여유가 있는 계층의 손에서 꺼내서 여유가 없는 이들에게 광범위하게 퍼뜨린 거지요. 고마워요 스피드 레코딩 왜건 !
