what3words(이하 W3W)라는, 지구상 어디에서나 통용가능한 지오코딩 시스템이 있습니다. 이건 복잡한 GPS 좌표 대신, 단어 3개로 지구상의 어떤 좌표든지 표현하게 한다는 혁신적인 발상을 구현한 것입니다. W3W의 원리는 다음과 같습니다. 지구 전체를 가로세로 3m짜리 정사각형으로 나누면 대략 57조 개에 달하는 사각형 조각이 나오는데, 이걸 사전에 나오는 영단어 3개의 조합으로 치환하는 것입니다. 영단어끼리의 조합은 컴퓨터 알고리즘에 의해 도출되며, 사용되는 영단어는 모두 25,000개 정도면 충분하다고 하네요. 원리를 보시면 아시겠지만, 영단어 말고 다른 언어로도 얼마든지 이런 주소 조합을 만들어낼 수 있습니다. 예를 들면, 현재 제가 있는 곳의 좌표는 mouse.deaf.pasting 이렇게 표현할 수 있습니다. (앗 개인정보 노출!) 이 좌표가 어디인지는 https://map.what3words.com/ 여기서 확인할 수 있습니다. 혹은 앱스토어나 플레이스토어에서 [what3words] 앱을 다운받거나요. 이걸 만든 사람의 말에 따르면, 주소라는 건 누구에게나 중요한 것인데 이런 것이 60여 년 이상 아무런 혁신 없이 존재한다는 건 말이 안 된다고 하는군요. 특히나 도로명주소와 옛 지번주소가 혼재되는 바람에 실제 주소 표기가 더 길어져버린 한국의 사정을 생각하면, 미래의 주소는 가능한 한 짧으면서도 명료해야 한다는 점이 실감납니다. 좋은 아이디어라고 생각하여, 여기에 소개합니다. 자세한 것은 위 링크를 참조하세요.
